A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

It’s Happening….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 17, 2021

I know this feels like a random dreary Wednesday much like every other Wednesday or every other day of the last year, but today is a little different…..today, pitchers and catchers report to camp.

And I don’t even care if they just sit there in masks all day staring at eachother from 6 feet away.

Today is a good day….

sure, except for fans of latin music. Johnny Pacheco, in on ground floor of Fania record company in NYC from 60s, died in Jersey. I saw him with small group at old SF Civic, and at Fillmore with Fania All Stars big band full of best “salseros” of the times mid 70s. They did famous concert in Yankee Stadium in front of 40 thou and there was a movie done too with live performances, Our Latin Thing. I’ve enjoyed this music ever since.

His LPS with famed Cuban singer Celia Cruz catapulted her into fame in this country and she performed around the world, often with him as bandleader. Originally from DR before moving to NYC at age 11 with family I remember at his show he said to audience, “If I don’t play a merengue tonight they will hang me by the family jewels.”

MASH unit added to rotation at $4M with another possible $2.5M in possible incentives. On top of N\ick Tropeano who signed to a minor league contract yesterday, comes the oft-injured Aaron Sanchez, whose career began with the Jays in 2014. The right-handed 28 Y.O. Barstow,Cal. was traded by Toronto to the Astros in 2019 where he soon went down to shoulder surgery.

Medical history for Sanchez could take up several pages, but somehow the Z&H scooper-uppers could not bypass this one, His big year was 2016 for the Jays where he actually hit #7 in Cy Young voting and made the All-Star squad on his 3.00 ERA. But the very next season he was out most of the while with a blister/Split-fingernail combo and then in 2018 had more surgery. In 2019 with Houston, he went down with shoulder surgery.

So why did SF reward Sanchez with this generous offer? He did a pair of showcases over the winter and in the second one blasted through with a 98mph heater. Hooked. Another reclamation project.

Rehab specials are now the prime feature for the current 6-man rotation for Los Gigantes. Successful in Gausman, now topping $19M, bewildered with Cueto and his heavy contract, counting on DeSclafani at around $6M, hopeful on Wood, who had a stinky season for the LaBumbos, wondering if Webb will live up to his potential, dangling Tropeano in SacTown and now sporting their latest MASHman, the Giants rotation is somewhere in the range of 7 starters—up and down—and awaiting Tyler Beede to return mid-season for an 8th,

For sure, they now have rotation depth quite equal numerically to their rather admirably loaded bullpen. Looks like the latter will be kept busy as the dumpster diving has achieved new depths with their latest couple of signings. Likely the team doctor will earn his salary and expect Kapler to get plenty of exercise with treks to the mound.

On the bright side Kyle Harrison’s fastball was clocked at 97 and the kid is throwing strikes. Maybe he bypasses the instructional league and goes straight to San Jose

Chron story on Alyssa Nakken recognizing a mentor from younger days as she returns for second season as Giants coach on Kapler’s staff. Fun fact–she grew up in Woodland and played 3 sports at Woodland HS before attending Sac State and playing 1b there for Lady Hornets.

i still don’t understand how minor leaguers are going to develop. Are they playing baseball this year?

    • willedav said, on February 17, 2021 at 8:57 am

YES! 4 minors teams for Giants. Jose will be low A Salem high A plus Richmond AA and River Cats. Last I saw start of season delayed a month to allow for ST at smaller facilities (not going to be at regular site).
Btw 5 giants in fangraphs top 100.
      Luciano #11 due ML 2023
      Bart #55
      Ramos #61 due 2022
      Matos #87 due 2024
Santos (only pitcher) #98 due this season

      • alleykat69 said, on February 17, 2021 at 9:10 am

I heard the Giants farm system is now rated #12 passing the Dodgers who are at #16 that’s just seems incredible so Z must be doing something right.Of course the butcher job Sabes/Evans did it’s u can only go up…

      • Bozo said, on February 17, 2021 at 11:16 am

Not to be a bitch here, Kat, but the first 4 of those guys were signed by Sabes/Evans and Santos was part of their trade with Boston for Nunez.

  7. blade3colorado said, on February 17, 2021 at 8:59 am

If it all falls apart by May (it will), trade anyone with a heart beat. I am hoping that at least one of the “bore core” falls into this category a la Melanoma to Atlanta. Concurrent with the aforementioned, trade Yaz for a prospect(s) to a contender while he’s still worth something (age 31 in August).

No one on the current roster – hitter or pitcher – is going to be worth a roll of quarters, sans Dubon (shaky maybe) in 1 to 2 years. In effect, all emphasis has to be directed at the farm system.

  8. alleykat69 said, on February 17, 2021 at 9:06 am

I’m tired of all these reclamation projects this team does. They’re finding guys nobody has ever heard of like in Major League..Where did you last play ? Penal colony league!

    • blade3colorado said, on February 17, 2021 at 9:17 am

No choice AK. I see a semblance of a plan by Z and the emphasis is “tread water” with reclamation projects, hoping you strike Gold (e.g., Yaz, Muncy, etc.); concurrent with accumulating draft picks. Ownership endorses this blueprint.

You want free agents? Root for the Yankees. It ain’t happening here.

      • willedav said, on February 17, 2021 at 10:05 am

Yeah I wonder about that (FAs) too Blade. A’s sure didn’t do that, and Friedman (who came to LA from Rays) isn’t big on it either. Bauer deal front loaded with options won’t last 2 years, if that.
Regardless of all money coming off the books, I don’t think Giants go big into that market, for SS or pitchers, either.

  9. djloo27 said, on February 17, 2021 at 10:16 am

    Maybe it’s just as well.
Giants record with big money FAs (since Bonds) ain’t too good is it?
    Zito? Smarj? Matt Morris?
Alfonzo was pretty big bucks at the time and he was considered a disappointment
although his stats don’t look all that bad.
I think Pence got his $90 mil before he went on the market…

    • blade3colorado said, on February 17, 2021 at 11:01 am

      Best since Bonds . . . crickets.

Seriously, Aubrey Huff was it and that was like a squirrel finding a can of Planter’s Peanuts. I mean come on . . . Sabean was signing a has been, a worn out, over-the-hill veteran first baseman coming off the worst year of his career. I have zero clue what Sabes saw in the 2009 Huff. Unfreakin’ believable what he accomplished in 2010.

Worst last decade? Signing Melanoma to a four-year, $62 million deal in 2016 off season, where him and the Bore Core – yes, they already went past their milk expiration date – led us to a 64-98 record in 2017.

      • djloo27 said, on February 17, 2021 at 11:19 am

Yeah, Melonoma – good one, Blade…

      • Flavor said, on February 17, 2021 at 11:31 am

Dec 2015 deal to sign Cueto for $130 mil hasn’t worked out so well either. $5 mil buyout after he leaves ($22 mil option to keep him um won’t happen) end of this year.

    RIP Johnny Pacheco.

I was always more of a Johnny Fontaine guy, with his olive oil voice and Dago charm…..

    • willedav said, on February 17, 2021 at 12:31 pm

johnny Fontaine was great. He’s in Vegas scene too, where he gladly signs the contract to appear at the Casino Mike is trying to buy from Moe Greene iirc.

Mr. Pacneco is in a great scene in Our Latin Thing movie and concert shown playing flute solo walking through NYC streets while band is doing the intro of Fania All Stars band and 5 singers. Melody, then each singer gets a verse to introduce themselves, JP gets first solo while one of the singers says in Spanish, “The magician of the flute, listen to him.”. Another long time bay area musician Orestes Vilato is on timbales, and gets his own solo later in same tune while band blasts chorus behind him.

      • willedav said, on February 17, 2021 at 12:57 pm

vid music on youtube taken from concert recorded live at Cheetah 1971, Estrellas de Fania. In movie lot of street scenes accompany the song, cockfights b-ball dancing food laundry hanging from buildings plus the live music. Good stuff

And fuck Lush Rimbaugh. He, Fucker (bowtie) Carlson, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Alex Jones can all rot in a fucking tar pit for all eternity.

I blame all this on CNN for Crossfire. When Jon Stewart went on that show and crucified Carlson and Paul Begala for the stupidity of playing to partisan politics, and not talking about anything in the way of policy, it was the most cogent argument against the knee-jerk left-right bullshit that still permeates ‘news’ shows to this day.

If you have 15 minutes, check this out.

Thank you all for the condolences, it means a lot coming from the greatest fans I know. My dad and I didn’t go to many baseball games, but football was another matter, lots of NY Giants games. My dad also loved to play golf and I’d get out with him a couple times a year. I think the last time we went to a baseball game was 2000 Giants-Phils at the Vet, Philly won in 10 on a walk-off inside-the-park HR by Abreu. And we got to Candlestick for a game in ’97. He grew up a Giants fan, started rooting for the Pirates when he worked in Pittsburgh — he was there for the World Series title in ’60 — then started rooting for the Mets later in life. It was funny hearing him gripe about the Mets just the same as any other Mets fan I know.
