A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Where Are We With The Archways?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 9, 2021

They must remain closed. I did some light googling and couldn’t find anything that said what the team plans to do with this. Anyone else?

I greatly enjoyed watching our park play more normally last season and with a deadened ball (supposedly) we will need every advantage afforded the hitter.

Totally agree. We need a fair ballpark that free agent hitters won’t avoid. This is another step toward making that happen. I’d like to see the fences still brought in even more.

An early morn San Diggity post is good to see. I’m about to enter Piazza”s where my good natured quiz focused courtesy clerk awaits

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 7:47 am

no quiz today. He just flipped a quarter 3 times, best two out of three. I lost so he beat me out of .25 this morning!

I’m all for the arches remaining closed. I could be wrong, but somehow I think Baer will have a big part in this decision. He has been the guy the ownership has always relied on in the past to be their connection to the fan-base.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 7:25 am

i think you’re right. Baer only stepped aside for PR reasons, he’s still completely tied into the ownership group and management.

  3. Bozo said, on March 9, 2021 at 7:12 am

Get a new version of Rusty, and have it go by the archway really really slow when the Giants are up and disappears when the other team is at bat. Wax on, wax off.

  4. Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 7:35 am

we need more knuckleballers in this boring game they play today where everyone is the same

    • Winder said, on March 9, 2021 at 9:18 am

I guess that proves spin isn’t everything.

  5. willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 7:54 am

See how this unfolds if fans are allowed in, even gradually. Interesting how well couple BC LHs did last year, great seasons for Belt and Crawford. Belt raked at home and overall has OPS over 1.000. Boring????hardly

Also note emphasis on adding LH bats to roster by Z—Vosler LaStella Wade Jr. Maybe he gets part of Baer’s attention. Of course, you still have to pitch to opposing teams, and Dodgers LHs very dangerous.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:21 am

OPS numbers never really did it for me. Bombs. Stolen bases. New faces. Bat flips. That’s the shit i find interesting, not a number…

      • willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:30 am

mm they might steal more bags than last season, but new faces and bat flips aren’t part of “the process.” And they didn’t add much power either. Winning and scoring runs like last year are of far more interest to me.

    • unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:22 am

Last year’s short-term success does not predicate a season’s worth of solid production for any of them.

I certainly don’t think they are as bad as people say, but this is an 82 win team at best.

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:24 am

i’ll be shocked if they get to 74

      • willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:35 am

Unc I hear you but you can say that about players on every team, not just BC Giants. Are you just gonna ignore the whole 2020 season? The O definitely played different with archways closed in summer last year–if they stay closed no reason not to think this helps LHs, of any age. Maybe Kap’s coaching staff had something to do with it too.

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:51 am

part of my negativity about the win total is that we have to play the Dodgers and the Padres 36 times.

  6. xoot said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:31 am

I’m still thinking 72, but that could change a bit before opening day. For example, Longo might start the season on the IL. If so, my guess might move up a game or two.

  7. sandog said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:42 am

I think this whole narrative some of you sell that we can’t blame Zaidi cuz Baer still has significant control is total bullshit, I think Zaidi is firmly in charge now and has been for some time. He gets the blame or the praise in my book–no one else.

  8. sandog said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:43 am

    I’m feeling 77 wins.

    • willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:51 am

Reasonable. What I’m saying is if they can hit like last season and score runs/win comeback games with rallies by offense, it will be anything but boring.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 8:52 am

so what do they go against SD and LA? 13-23? At best? Probably worse. That is going to significantly impact their overall record by year’s end.

      • chipower9 said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:55 pm

Historically, the Giants have always played the bums tough. in the previous decade (2010-2019) Giants have a 95-92 advantage. Last year, Bums 6-4. SD is another story.

Pad-Giants past several years (Wins-Losses for Giants):
        2020 – 2-8
        2019 – 9-10
        2018 – 8-11
        2017 – 12-7
        2016 – 8-11
        2015 – 8-11

So, it isn’t like LA or SD has totally kicked our asses the last several years.

    • willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 10:05 am

could very well be Flav though SF usually gives Dodgers good fight. Giants didn’t come in with very high expectations last season either, did they? Yet pickups like Flores Gausman Smyly were fine. I’m skeptical pitching holds up, but offense last season was enough to almost even up run differential. That happens this year, SD might not be so far off.

  9. unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 9:23 am

No Willie, but injuries play a much bigger part in a 162 game season compared to a 60 game one. I’d love to see Belt and Crawfish do what they did. I just don’t see it over a full year.

I’d say 80 wins if held to a number. And that’s optimistic AF.

Here’s a number that ain’t exactly exciting, but a little intriguing: Cueto 94 mph fastball. If he has that, he’ll be good. At least until the DL calls.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 10:37 am

      94 works just fine.

    • djloo27 said, on March 9, 2021 at 11:02 am

I feel the same way about radar guns as I do about the teletimers on Belmont’s turf courses.
      Don’t trust ’em…
I learned that from the great Clocker Ray…

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 11:40 am

I bet good ol clocker ray has seen some shit

  13. alleykat69 said, on March 9, 2021 at 11:13 am

Why do they continue to waste at bats on Joe McCarthy?

    • Bozo said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:02 pm

They are trying to help him get the team lead in strikeouts.

      • xoot said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:25 pm

He and Luciano are in a close race.

  14. willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:28 pm

Shea first line in chron today: “Giants mgr. Gabe Kapler says his lineups aren’t necessarily indicative of what to anticipate once the season begins. They aren’t drawn up just to get the front-liners ready at their regular positions, but largely to see what works and what doesn’t, an ongoing experiment to help determine the makeup of the Opening Night roster.”
Wonder how many in above will be part of that..my guess, 3 tops.

    • alleykat69 said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:45 pm

      Make it 4…Dick,Ruf,Dubon&Wood

      • Bozo said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:52 pm

I’d add Casali to your list for 5.

      • willedav said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:14 pm

mm you guys probably right but I wasn’t thinking about Wood, just position players. Good call though!

  15. sandog said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:43 pm

    DUGGAR BOMB

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:44 pm

impossible. That guy sucks according to so many *experts* here……So, team lead in bombs right now?

  16. Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:55 pm

  17. Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 12:56 pm

another oppo bomb. This guy is finding a legit power stroke.

  18. unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:11 pm

ST home runs = Pre-game 65 yard FGs. That and $5.00 gets you a cup of joe. And a date with Randy Elliott.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:12 pm

I’ll.take.the.guys hitting them over.the guys not hitting them

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:13 pm

What would you prefer a bomb or a fly out? A bomb or a weak ground out?

  19. Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:12 pm

This oppo stuff (with power) is.exciting. it’s like what posey dreams he could do but doesn’t have the strength to execute

    • unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:14 pm

You forgot about the 25 MPH wind helping it along! That was a glorified pop up.

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:32 pm

are lots of bombs going out today? I’m not watching the game

      • unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:09 pm

I don’t know, but the announcers thought it was a pop up/fly out.

      • djloo27 said, on March 9, 2021 at 3:16 pm

So were 500 of Hank Aaron’s “bombs”
Chief Noc-A-Homa made more basket catches than Mays…

  20. sandog said, on March 9, 2021 at 1:39 pm

Now he scored on a wild pitch. The Graveduggar is making shit happen with his well rounded athletic skills!

    • djloo27 said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:00 pm

The Grave Duggar clearly worked on his upper body over the winter.
He reminds me of Paul O’Neill in many ways…

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:02 pm

There is good video of.him swinging this spring compared to last year. Totally different swing this year

    • unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:09 pm

      Yes, round is a shape.

  21. sandog said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:04 pm

Now he drives in a run showing plate discipline drawing a walk. He’s gonna have his fingerprints all over this victory. He’s probably made a couple of sweet grabs as well.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:18 pm

      He can do anything.

      • djloo27 said, on March 9, 2021 at 3:12 pm

I’m Grave Duggar, hear me roar
With numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an’ pretend
‘Cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the floor
No one’s ever gonna keep me down again
        Oh yes I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
        Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
        I am strong (strong)
        I am invincible (invincible)
        I’m Grave Duggar…

    • unca_chuck said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:52 pm

Except make the opening day roster!

      Jaylin will drink GraveDuggar’s milkshake.

      • djloo27 said, on March 9, 2021 at 3:17 pm

Yeah, on the bus to Sacramento…

  22. alleykat69 said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:37 pm

Geez why don’t they give Duggar a franchise tag while your at it?
    Oh thank god wrong sport!

  23. Bozo said, on March 9, 2021 at 2:49 pm

Here we go again. I just reupped the MLBtv package that I cancelled last year.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 4:25 pm

      why not just use bilasport?

      • Bozo said, on March 9, 2021 at 5:22 pm

Thanks again, bilasport was awesome but I decided for $130 bucks I’d go with easy. I can cleanly watch MLBtv from all my devices and even watch games that have already been played, I could probably do all that on bilasport but I already have mlb set up on everything and I’m a lazy fucker.
Come football season I’ll be singing the bilasport song again fer sure.

      • James said, on March 9, 2021 at 5:07 pm

Haven’t been watching the games, but will look at a clip.

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 5:29 pm

i tried to find it but couldn’t. It’s out there tho

  26. Irish Kevin said, on March 9, 2021 at 4:45 pm

I read the Arches will remain closed, the whole 6 feet apart can’t be controlled out there. Depending on injuries, I see this team as a .500 club

  27. James said, on March 9, 2021 at 5:05 pm

BF, for your amusement, using 2019 stats I put together an ultimate Bombs and Bags low OPS starting 8 below . At each position, I picked the player with the lowest OPS who had either 25 SBS or 25 HRs.

CF Mallex Smith SB: 46 HR: 6 OPS: 635
    SS Elvis Andrus 31 12 707
    2B Rougned Odor 11 30 721
    RF Kole Calhoun 4 33 792
    3B Manny Machado 5 32 796
    LF Eddie Rosario 3 33 800
    1B Rhys Hoskins 2 29 819
    C JT Realmuto  9 25 820

The overall stats look a lot like the Rangers, who finished with 220 HRs and 131 SBs, the latter the most in baseball. They finished a little above the MLB average in runs scored and a little below avg. in team OPS.

    • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 5:18 pm

3 of those guys lost their starting gigs last year (Smith, Odor and Hoskins).

      • James said, on March 9, 2021 at 5:57 pm

        I guess it’s not THE ultimate . . . .

      • Flavor said, on March 9, 2021 at 6:01 pm

do we have a Giant who would be projected to have an OPS of over .800 with 25 projected bombs or steals?

      • James said, on March 9, 2021 at 6:31 pm

A Giant with an OPS of 830 with 19 bombs is no less valuable than one with 28 bombs, hard as that is to believe. The extra hits and walks to get to 830 help create the same ~18 runs the HRs produce.

mm looks like anyone who had good day at plate had lot of company–Brewers had 17 hits including 10 for XBHs on way to 13-7 W. according to box I saw. Zach Green had double and triple and I think they hit 4 bombs too.
but break out saran wrap if it makes y’all happy..
