A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Clock Ticking, Graves He’s Digging

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 12, 2021

I’m jones’n for some real baseball so I checked the schedule. Giants open in Seattle. At night. Lol, I had hoped that was an April Fools joke but sure enough we open against our *arch enemies* on the road in the dead of night on April 1……

That’s ok, bring it on. I am getting pretty stoked for Chi to post that shit about staring at snow melting or kids playing outside his window or whatever that poem says….

Pathetic crap what the Dubs showed up with last night. Think they are trying to showcase Poole a little but I am starting to question Kerr’s influence on this team. What say y’all???

I know part of general narrative of 2020 is play out the season with vet hitters, save $$$ for upcoming FA class.
If you look at MLBTR top 10 of those, anyone beside the SS stand out?
Mike Conforto is making $12mil this season LH corner OF with consistent track record, under 30.
Kris Bryant, 3b/OF is in same age bracket and currently making more than that. Consistent (except for last year) .900 OPS guy who doesn’t have split bias, hitting LHP/RHP and home/away pretty well. RH power bat SF hasn’t had in long time.

I personally feel the SS including very talented Story are all gonna want mega year and $$$ deals and would take the best one offered. Doesn’t sound like bidding war Z would be into. FA SPs are all gonna be older to start with. Those haven’t worked out well in past here.

So where would Giants be more likely to spend all this money we’re so happy to have come off the books?

      Welcome back, Craw!

      • willedav said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:16 am

Ha. Honest, it would not surprise me one iota at least one of those not named Longoria who fall under BC category are in Giants uni next season, and not as part of Kapler’s extended coaching staff either.
Story is 28, currently in last year of 2 yr/$27mil deal. I don’t see him settling for less than 5/$80-100 mil. And is Boras client iirc.
        Would Z go there?

      • James said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:28 am

I keep forgetting that Story is still that young. I think I get him mixed up with Tulo. I think Z would do 5-6 years. There’s a lot of variability in how players perform in their early 30s. You’ve gotta take some gambles!

  3. willedav said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:17 am

Story is repped by Excel sports not Boras client.

God is a big white baseball that has nothing to do but go in a
curve or a straight line. I studied geometry in highschool
and I know this is true
Given these facts the pitcher, the batter, and the catcher all look
    pretty silly. No Hail Marys
Are going to get you out of a position with the bases loaded and
no outs, or when you’re 0-2, or when the ball bounces
out to the screen wildly. Off seasons
I often thought of praying to him but could not stand the
thought of that big, white, round omnipotent bastard.
Yet he’s there. As the game follows rules he makes them.
    I know
I was not the only one who felt these things.

Jack Spicer “Four Poems for The St. Louis Sporting News”

That was great. Baseball Gods live.

      • James said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:56 am

I don’t like that he uses “position” instead of “situation” or “pickle,” even if they do have a different number of syllables – it sounds like someone who isn’t a real fan, which he was. Also, Wilhelm was pitching when that poem was written.

      • Winder said, on March 12, 2021 at 9:20 am

It makes a lot more sense knowing Wilhelm was pitching.

Good song by the great duo. According to her website, it’s not released on an album yet. She says she’s still trying to figure out how to connect the refrain to the banjo picker. I say just let them jamb. I say to Spicer, put jam in place of position.

xoot – they sure are taking their time about it. I think that show was from 2008.

  5. Flavor said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:31 am

No to Story. I don’t trust anyone coming off that mountain. Do it at base camp consistently, then I’m a believer….

    • James said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:42 am

Yeah, those home/away splits, which you may have cited before, are not real encouraging. 760 OPS, not that much better than Crawford. But he has hit 25 HRs per 550 ABs in his away games . . . .

    • James said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:45 am

And he’s stolen 24 bases a season in away games at an 80% clip.

    • willedav said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:48 am

DJLM? or does he reap significant park factor benefit hitting at Yankee Stadium and AL East in general?

  6. unca_chuck said, on March 12, 2021 at 8:35 am

The Warriors don’t have a coaching problem. They have a scoring problem. They are still woefully undersized inside as the Clips demonstrated. Every trip to the lane by the Clippers brought a foul. With all the fouls, there’s no offensive flow. Wiseman being in the doghouse didn’t help.

    • gianthead said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:41 am

They definitely need bench scoring Chuck. What move can they make and would it even be worth it? Oladipo makes no sense to me…

      • unca_chuck said, on March 12, 2021 at 2:40 pm

Nothing. They need to decide if they want to pay for Oubre going forward. Of all the guys scuttling around this year, he is the only one with a decent upside. This year is a wash. They could trade Oubre for someone on a better deal. Who? I don’t know.

Wiggins is reverting to his ghost of a persona. Wannamaker, Poole, Mannion, and the rest are non-entities at this point. Kerr might as well cash in his chips. This team is falling out of the 10 spot as we speak. They better hope Wiseman comes through, otherwise their drafts have been horrible for a long time.

Their nut-up or shut up moment has come, and they have failed pretty badly. 0-5 against the solid teams of the west (they won’t beat the Jazz) show that this team is not close now. They should simply play Wiseman about 30 minutes a game and let him get his game together.

Story is the perfect fit for Giants with his power, speed,OBP career 353 Slugging pct over .800 at a position that definitely needs to be upgraded.Listen you get one more year out of Longo and then you slide Lucky Luciano over to 3rd are even find out if Story can play some 3rd as well.Either way those 2 in the LU going forward is solid. 4 to 5 years max would be perfect 👌 and like James said it’s time to take a gamble on a consistent durable player with a great track record..

  11. willedav said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:17 am

Cursory look at fangraphs view of prospects –Luciano is hitter first with D not nearly so solid; SS a maybe might be 3b instead. Ramos too, not a CF and they wonder about plate discipline. Santos as reliever ready this season they like, Corry too maybe. Wilson as more 2b type Bishop as only possible CF. Also high on kid SP Harrison drafted out of HS.
Still up on Bart but question seems to be how good defensively he will be–if good, then he sticks. Concern about Bailey is more about his offense and how much he will hit, D being solid.
anyway, interesting read. Obviously, we’ll know more after this season.

    • alleykat69 said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:36 am

That was a sweet move by Z’man getting Will Wilson a high draft pick from the Angels!
He got alittle revenge on his former team yesterday ripping a bases clearing double with 2 outs that gave the Giants a brief 3-2 lead.Maddon did not seem to happy after he had to go out and yank the pitcher.Good for the kid, he has major upside to succeed with more experience..

  12. alleykat69 said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:25 am

I have to disagree with BF about players only doing well at Coors.
DJ LaMaueiu (sp) has been even a better player with the Yanks then with the Rockies.
And the Giants even got great production with Ellis Burks in his advanced age having back to back years knocking in 96 runs and hitting 55 HR’s and to a lesser degree Big Cat Galarraga had some major highlight reels including the HR that nearly reached the coke bottle .
Point is Story still in his prime will easily continue his power numbers, hell maybe the Giants will permanently close the archways and his numbers along with many more players will spike up even more..

    • Winder said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:48 am

I know hitters didn’t like Candlestick but I think most of em feel the same about Oracle Park. Someone said the other day about moving the fences in some more, I am all for that also.

    • gianthead said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:56 am

Isn’t the new Yankee park a big offensive friendly park as well???

      • Winder said, on March 12, 2021 at 12:35 pm

I think most of the new ones are hitter friendly.

  13. gianthead said, on March 12, 2021 at 10:56 am

I am not buying Trevor Story either. I can see him with the Cubs because I dont see them keeping Baez and think Baez will end up making or expecting more than what Story will get. Story getting 6 years – $90 mill is in the ballpark and Lindor, Baez and Seager obviously IMO get bigger deals. I am still most covetous of Correa because I think he is more of a leader and we need one to lead this team in the post bore core era. He also hates the Flodgers. A vet leader locking down the most important fielding position and the potential with mlb’s announcement yday of experimenting at AA with infield defense restrictions with possible second half of the season disallowing shifts will put more pre-eminence of defense back on into baseball and making Correa much more valuable.

We dont need Correa to carry the team offensively and you allow Luciano, Ramos, Bart, Bishop progress to hopefully join Correa with Yaz, LaStella by next year and I think another hitter at the Kris Bryant free agent level would be a perfect fit in that type of lineup…

    • gianthead said, on March 12, 2021 at 11:07 am

Seager is my back up choice to Correa….I could see Baez in a Flodger uni and Houston may not be wanting to sign Correa to a long-term deal. If Lindor extends with the Mets, there may not be a lot of suitors for a long-term big contract for a SS and Giants will be sitting on a ton of cash…

      1) LaStella – 2b
      2) Yaz – RF
      3) Correa – SS
      4) Bryant – 1b
      5) Ramos – LF
      6) Longora/Luciano full time ’23 – 3b
      7) Bart – C
      8) Dubon/Bishop/Grave Duggar – CF

  14. alleykat69 said, on March 12, 2021 at 11:39 am

GH, though both Correa&Seager are excellent players I just worry that they’re injury prone as there track record has proven compared to Story. Doubt the Dodgers will let Seager get to F/A anyway they will resign him.Correa a better chance to get but I’m leery about him holding up with his injury history..

  15. blade3colorado said, on March 12, 2021 at 12:15 pm

Forget about Story. He’s a “Coors creation.” Equally important, fill in the blank on how many years to add to his age. Someone mentioned 28? Add 2-4 years more due to the wear and tear of Coors altitude and adjusting back and forth from there to sea level. In other words, he’s an “old 28.” Last, but not least, look at his home/away splits. Don’t point out DJ LeMahieu. He is the exception, not the rule. Besides, LeMahieu’s style of hitting has taken advantage of the short right field porch (19 bombs at home, 7 away in his first full season in 2019) and in general outstanding hitting park at Yankee stadium, along with the other great parks in his division, e.g., Boston. I think it would be wasted money on Story.

Look, I don’t know what the Giants are going to do next year with most of these contracts off the books. I think the money will be spread around, insofar as free agent acquisitions. In other words, no big splash on one free agent. Related to the aforementioned, I am wondering if the Ownership group will even spend a lot of money, sans the bore core contracts, or continue with what Z is doing right now? I just don’t see our payroll keeping up with the elite of the league (Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc.). I suspect that ownership will spend just enough to keep those seats filled, but no where near what they were spending during our “luxury tax” seasons.

    • xoot said, on March 12, 2021 at 12:26 pm

Maybe they’ll methodically increase the size of their investment, especially if covid really does let up and so does the new cba. The luxury tax is supposed to be done. Visa’s supposed to be putting its world headquarters into their parking lot development (just as the market for office space nose dives, but still). They should have money enough to spend.

    • blade3colorado said, on March 12, 2021 at 12:33 pm

A couple of other things about Story . . . He’s a strikeout machine (led the league either in 2017 or 2018). He also is terrible defensively. He’s also a devout Christian. Just my take, I don’t think he wants to come here to live. Moreover, he grew up a Texas Rangers fan, so I think they would have a good chance of getting him. By the by, if there are rumors about trading him, that means Bridich (GM) wants to get value while he’s still in a Rockies uniform.

Yeah, Kat, Z is very high on Wilson. It’s the kind of player pick-up that will ultimately decide if Z’s time with the Giants is seen as successful or not. He sees something in Wilson that he really likes. We’ll see how it all pans out.

  17. sandog said, on March 12, 2021 at 3:24 pm

Jeff Kent use to ruffle some feathers talking about how Candlestick was a better part to hit in than the new park.

No on Story. Let’s grow our own and sprinkle in some 1-2 year free agent deals to fill in the gaps.
