Putting It All Together

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 22, 2021

Tromp with a birthday blast, Yaz filling up the stat sheet and Doobie with 2 stolen bags. A nice little Sunday, actually. I have only heard of 1 of the Dodgers pitchers (the starter) but it’s still nice to drop an L on those losers.

The Dodgers will miss Hernandez and Pederson. The challenge for the Dodgers in trying to put together a dynasty is the challenge of paying everyone.

Thanks for the correction on the last thread, Loo.
Yeah, Stan Love was a journeyman player; Bob Love was the guy who had a nice career with the Bulls.

    • willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 7:20 am

Bob Love was on those great Bulls teams that battled Warriors in playoffs. Norm VanLier, Jerry Sloan, Chet Walker Tom Boerwinkle. Chet Walker one of few guys I ever saw fake Nate Thurmond into a shooting foul.

    Still no word from Stix.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 7:03 am

Someone (Xoot?) said that Stix had said he was going on a visit to his old home in the woods.

      • blade3colorado said, on March 22, 2021 at 7:31 am

Yeah, not too worried about him. He specifically indicated that he was going on a road trip.

Salvador Perez, Royals agree to four-year, $82 million extension. Perez helped the Royals capture a World Series title in 2015. He was named World Series MVP after slashing .364/.391/.455 with eight hits and two RBI. He is also a six-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glover and three-time Silver Slugger. During the pandemic shortened campaign, he slashed .333/.353/.633 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI.

Stupid contract in lieu of his age (31), but my take is that he outperformed his six-year, $52 million deal that began in 2016. Conversely, Posey has underperformed his contract significantly. Posey is probably the better offensive player, but defense seems to be Perez’s edge (5 GGs versus Posey’s 1), albeit, outside of the 2 World Series he played in, I don’t really know. I don’t think either one gets into the HOF, but Perez seems to have age on his side right now.

    What say you?

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:04 am

Posey’s Gold Glove total was hurt by having to compete with Yadier, who’s the more self-promoting, IMO. Yadier making all those throws behind the runner at first base were fake hustle, IMO.

    • djloo27 said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:31 am

I think he made the last out of the 2014 WS – the pop up to Panda.
      I could be wrong…

    • willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:45 am

mm Posey in early years of course was highly underpaid. He was very high WAR player with multiple awards being paid less than a mil during early 3/5 days. Injuries have cost him (and team) definitely. Gold glove, idk seems like way overvalued award sometimes given to less than deserving. Looking to see what’s left in tank for Posey; hopefully he shows enough to stick around and help Kapler figure out staff til Bailey can take over.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:56 am

Yeah, Loo, Perez hit the pop up to end the Series. Bum gave him several fastballs, up in the strike zone, in a row. Clearly pitching to a scouting report.

  5. xoot said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:04 am

Last week of ST. Casali, Posey, Longo and Belt still not certain for opening day. I think Longo and Belt on IL to start would be a good thing.

    • xoot said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:23 am

Susan reported Belt engaging in “some baseball activity” about three weeks ago. In the meantime, he’s probably picked up another malady and stubbed his toe.

  6. willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:56 am

As late as 2017 Posey was still a 4 WAR player with .861 OPS as per B/R. 2010 when he wasn’t making squat 3.9, and 2012 7.6. Wasn’t until 2013 he made as much as $8mil, and was 5 WAR player with 2 WS rings by then.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 9:00 am

That’s why I don’t have a big problem with any of the “reward” contracts the Giants gave out, even the Cain one.

      • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 9:03 am

Key contributors to the 3-in-5 got paid, and that’s fine. Taking on Longoria’s contract is far more irritating to me.

      • Bozo said, on March 22, 2021 at 2:02 pm

Me too Zumiee, I never understood that move, eat Span’s contract if you just wanted to be rid of him.

  7. Macdog said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:05 am

Finally, some competent basketball in the tourney (or maybe just bad defense) after seeing a lot of dreadful offense. Oregon on pace for well over 100, Iowa not far behind on pace for 90s.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:17 am

For a team to score 100 points in a college game, both teams have to cooperate. 🙂

    • willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:34 am

Rutgers in house. Omaruyi was all league player in Pac 12.

  8. James said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:09 am

I’ve posted the list of HoF catchers before, and in terms of offensive stats, they are an expectedly underwhelming lot. Posey with 3 WS rings and the 861 OPS (correction, 826) would not be out of place on it. But he’s not a Koufax like prodigy. Zumie’s slam of Cousins the other day may be accurate, unfortunately.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:22 am

2,000 hits would have gotten Posey into the Hall, IMO, but his rapid physical decline due to lingering effects of that injury make 2,000 seem unreachable now.

      • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:23 am

“Physical decline” in the sense of pro athlete performance.

      • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:27 am

Fun fact- Posey still has a career batting average over .300 at .302.

      • djloo27 said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:44 am

        Same as Mays…

      • James said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:44 am

Since Belt’s injuries came up again, I’ll note that the multiple beanings arguably kept him locked into his role as a figure of controversy and derision for many. He was not injury prone in his 20s and his career numbers would certainly be better now.

      • xoot said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:57 am

True. It’s easy to think of him as the cartoon character slouching around beneath his own personal storm cloud, but he’s been good despite bad luck.

    • djloo27 said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:54 am

Sorry to repeat myself, (that’s what old people do) but if dying in a plane crash didn’t get Munson in,
      Posey has zero chance.

I don’t see any reason to start Longo on the DL, not the way he’s crushing the ball this spring. They have a few days off before they even start the series in Seattle and then he could DH to start there to keep his foot healthier.

    • xoot said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:58 am

Yeah as long as he keeps getting ST pitches to crush he should be able to trot without wincing.

    • Flavor said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:38 am

the main reason my brackets are doing so shitty. I am going against my college buddies, everyone is all in on the Pac 12 and living in Oregon so I just took everyone facing the Pac 12 teams know all my buddies were taking them. Mistake and now last place for Big Flavor.

I’ve gotten hooked on cool covers of Beach Boys songs. This is a cover of “Girl Don’t Tell Me” from a women-led pop-punk band in the 1990s called Fuzzy.

    • James said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:54 am

This was an unlikely part of the James on acoustic guitar lullabye rotation for my kids 20+ years ago. The minimal guitar solo is up there with the one on “Don’t Worry Baby” as one of my favorites.

      • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 12:08 pm

Yes, a guitar solo should always be doing what’s best for that particular song.
I think that’s the problem I have with Van Halen guitar solos. I never know why they’re in a song.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 12:02 pm

In general, I don’t. But Posey getting in as a representative of the 3-in-5 would have been nice. Bochy will get to do it, though, so that’s cool.

    From the Athletic.

    Watson is toast.

Of the 13 lawsuits that are currently viewable on the Harris County district clerk’s website, all but two of the suits involve plaintiffs who say they were contacted for massage appointments in 2020. The other two incidents, also involving massage therapists, allegedly occurred in January and March of this year.

The suits allege Watson forced two women to perform oral sex, ejaculated on one woman, ejaculated in front of two others, groped a woman’s vagina and buttocks and kissed another woman unprompted upon arrival for an appointment. Eleven of the 13 publicly available suits accuse Watson of inappropriately touching women with his penis. One alleges that at the end of a massage, after trying to direct a woman to touch his anus, Watson exposed himself and asked if she “did more” than professional work “for more money.”

    • Winder said, on March 22, 2021 at 1:57 pm

i’m not saying I think something nefarious went on with these allegations against Watson. There are a lot of them that would be difficult to coordinate. The timing of it is outrageous tho.

  28. unca_chuck said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:19 pm

Well, that’s the point I made on my blog. This shit is what, a year old? No one filed criminal charges? Now they come out of the dark looking for money? The timing is very questionable. The lawyer trolling for more women to come out (so to speak) and get on the gravy train is pretty sleazy.

If it’s good enough for Robert Kraft, it’s good enough for me. That’s the rub, and I’m sticking with it.

Pac 12 is on fire. UCLA wins. Orygun beats Iowa. USC taking it to #3 Kansas. Happy ending for them. So far.

Massage parlors in the news big time these days. Not for good reasons. One of those things that the less we hear about them, the better. No news is good news. News is going to always be bad, from Kraft, to the Atlanta shootings, to Watson, et al. Kinda breaks my heart. When I first was living in Asia in ’05 (in China), I started writing a collection of stories. One was called “Everything I know about China, I learned from my massage girl”. Tongue in cheek, so to speak. “Hey, people, leave them AMPs alone”…..

  30. unca_chuck said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:43 pm

I get liking the Beatles more than the Beach Boys. But for all the genius of Brian Wilson, it’s still teenybopper music to me. The Beatles at least progressed way past the ‘I wanna hold your hand’ stuff. Although Pet Sounds has some solid stuff on it, I just can’t listen to a lot of it.

Now if they had a song called “I want you to touch my taint” I could get behind that. So to speak.

Guess I have to stick with this.

I had the supreme thrill of seeing Zappa play this at the Greek in 1988.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:43 pm

The early Beach Boys lyrics are not often much, but musically a lot of the material is incredibly complex. This song uses a very complex musical chord in its hook. The chord is called G+5/F. I would need three hands to play that on guitar. Wilson just had a way of finding those kinds of things on piano. So, I choose to see The Beach Boys as a forerunner of indie pop music.

    • zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 11:21 pm

That’s a great guitar solo on that. The singer is very good, too.

Hard to fault the women in Watson case. Kind of like Cuomo, sounds like they put up with bad behavior at the time, for whatever reasons. Once someone spoke up the outrage resurfaces, yeah he did that to me too.
Read a story set in either Japan or Korea, a woman assistant complained about conduct toward her by her boss–and company said she is the one who brought bad publicity down on the company.

  33. unca_chuck said, on March 23, 2021 at 8:08 am

That’s Ray White, Zumie. Toured with Zappa off and on from the 70s to the 90s.

Zappa got Tina Turner and the Ikettes to sing on the Apostrophe and Overnite Sensation sessions but when Ike Turner read the lyrics, he got royally pissed off at Zappa and didn’t want them credited.
