A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Nice Start To The Season

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 15, 2021

I bet the plane flight across country was pretty fun for our guys. Especially with a day off today. Good for them they earned it.

James was at the game yesterday as most of you know. You may have read his rundown but here it is if you missed it.

Hoping like hell that Cueto just experienced a pulled muscle or something from which he can mend quickly. Dude has been lights-out last two outings.

Nice recap from James. My good friend Kelly was at the yard yesterday and had similar comments on the overall experience.

Props to James for attending and report. Disconcerting Giants draw even fewer fans (despite how well they are playing) than what is allowed in yard, and still have all the issues accomodating them James mentioned.

Tatis Jr. reported to be taking pregame IF and batting practice, and eligible to come off IL on Friday as Padres host Dogs for weekend series at Petco. Meanwhile Pads have dropped 2 of 3 to Pirates on road, while LA hammered Rockies again to bring record to 10-2.

Yeah Yeah, it’s early. Don’t look now, but our Gigantes are in 2nd place.

I finally decided to spend the extra 60 or so seconds to log on thru WordPress since I can’t from my phone….Not at all surprised with the starting rotations success as I really liked Zman’s offseason acquisitions. I do feel like the bullpen will ultimately be this teams Achilles heel. It’s going to be very interesting to see what Z does at the trade deadline with several potential strong trade chips in front of him. Since there is no fear of fan revolt at the park (could they possibly draw less?) he will have no reason not to pull multiple triggers.

Why don’t all clubs just require all fans to show proof of vaccination and then operate as normal. No masks, no cashless transactions, no pod seating. I guess since I just hit two weeks since my second vaccination, I am really ready to party like it’s 2019. Let’s get back to normal and reward those who vaccinated. To the hell with everyone else.

Great to see you again, Wilco.

      • wilcojoe said, on April 15, 2021 at 9:23 am

Hey you too. Is your neighbor Steve (aka. Blade) looking to get out of the foothills already? I saw one of his recent posts and it sounds like he is looking to move again.

      • chipower9 said, on April 15, 2021 at 10:31 am

I think he is always looking. I know the cost of homeowners insurance really surprised him (and I warned him about this). We have lost and had to find new insurance a couple of times over the past couple of years. With all the wildfires, it is tough finding and keeping reasonably priced insurance.

Have you tried the WordPress app on your phone instead of Safari or Chrome?

  10. snarkk said, on April 15, 2021 at 11:18 am

I’ve got the WordPress app and can now enter posts via my phone again. Took some effort, but now I can rag on the team while not chained to my home office. Giants surprisingly good so far, but limited competition quality. We’ll see. Bum is looking washed up in AZ. Zman should have traded him for whatever 2 years back like some of us said, but at least he let the Dbacks be stupid, and not the Giants, to sign him long term. I actually hope he rights his ship, but it’s definitely taking on water…

  11. alleykat69 said, on April 15, 2021 at 11:50 am

Yeah it’s weird on WordPress on both Flavors&Unca’s blog I will start to post and it sends me back to WordPress sometimes, and it keeps my name alleykat69 but then I need to add my password and once I do that it will show me to press my finger I’d button and then I’m good to go if that makes any sense? Like the old saying “ if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”so I leave it like this..

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 3:37 pm

That’s just the Grave Duggar fucking with you cat. Get ready for a dirt nap to be dug and given to you shortly.

  12. sandog said, on April 15, 2021 at 1:54 pm

I see the Marlins are being coy about announcing their starter for tomorrow. No doubt this is due to The Graveduggar being promoted to the big league roster. They are probably going to try some shenanigans with a righty opener to get us to burn him after only one AB. Hopefully Kap is wiser than that. Put him in the 2 hole and leave him there.

    • willedav said, on April 15, 2021 at 2:10 pm

Doesn’t seem to matter who is pitching to him—he sucks whether he faces LHP or RHP.
Vs. RHP for career, .233 with .647 OPS.
Vs. LHP for career, .244 with .590 OPS
funny enough doesn’t matter about home or away either–again he sucks no matter where he is
      Home .239
      Away..,234
But thanks for getting me to look up his career ML stats–never a dull moment

      • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 3:36 pm

It is stupid to look at that guy’s career stats especially considering he has a new swing now.

      • willedav said, on April 15, 2021 at 3:58 pm

the same new swing that got him sent down to the alt site? And got Wade Jr. brought up before him? And also led Giants to go sign yet another OF, Skye Bolt? Must be working wonders for sure.

      • xoot said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:07 pm

He can swing that shovel now.

      • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:22 pm

Those BAs would top all current Giant OFs.
GD showed a good eye and opposite field power in camp.
        All things are possible…

      • Carstie Clausen said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:46 pm

Just to stir it up a bit, those stats do look considerably better. — at least BA– than those of our established OFers.

    • alleykat69 said, on April 15, 2021 at 3:17 pm

Yeah I’m sure the Marlins are quaking in they’re boots with the prospect of facing a useless player like GD..
Giants should of left him behind at the tarmac and saved the seat for Ramos.
Watching GD play is worse then watching paint dry!

  13. James said, on April 15, 2021 at 2:42 pm

Sign of the times: Yesterday, for each flyball the Reds hit, I’d unselfconsciously say “nope” right after the hitter made contact.

  14. zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:22 pm

“Disconcerting Giants draw even fewer fans (despite how well they are playing) than what is allowed in yard, and still have all the issues accomodating them James mentioned.”

But….a low turnout for the Bay Area is not surprising, though, is it? I can see the Bay Area, home of Silicon Valley, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and so forth, as a whole, being very strident in following the science regarding the virus, and wanting to be very very cautious. Maybe overly cautious at times, possibly, but it’s understandable, I think.

  15. zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:26 pm

“Why don’t all clubs just require all fans to show proof of vaccination and then operate as normal. No masks, no cashless transactions, no pod seating. I understand that eagerness, but the vaccines don’t guarantee a person won’t catch the virus and spread it to others. The vaccines only promise to keep the infected person from getting really sick. And the vaccines don’t guarantee they will help 100% of the people getting the shots.

    • zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:28 pm

The virus will be defeated by a really high percentage of the population getting vaccinated. We’re still far from that, but progress is being made on a daily basis.

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:40 pm

There are no guarantees in life zumiee.

      • zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:46 pm

Everybody has to do what they’re comfortable with, though. It’s hard to enjoy the game at the ballpark if you’re not fully comfortable. I’m just theorizing about the low attendance numbers.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2021 at 11:33 pm

Except for the return of the Grave Digger!

    • Bozo said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:54 pm

Additionally, cities and states have their mandates as well as the fans feeling comfortable in attending a large gathering . Also, the more fans that attend the more security (stadium and city police), ushers, ticket takers and concession stand employees are needed. The box scores list 7.4 thousand for opening day and 6.4 yesterday. The two night games were in the 3,000 attendance, so again, the fans have their own mandate.

  16. zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 4:41 pm

    According to a CDC website-
People Vaccinated for Covid-19 in the U.S. as of now:

At Least One Dose:125,822,868, 37.9% of the population

Fully Vaccinated: 78,498,290, 23.6% of the population

Is anyone going to go to a movie theater in 2021? I realize that’s different, being indoors. I won’t be in a movie theater until 2022 at the earliest. I do like the experience of a movie on the real big screen, with big sound.

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 5:09 pm

I wouldn’t go into a movie theater now but I wasn’t really doing that before anyways. I have no problem being outdoors though now that I’m totally vaccinated I don’t even think about covet when I’m outside to be honest with you

      • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 5:10 pm

        Covid. Sorry, voice to text

  18. zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 5:25 pm

I think Covid weariness works against some people wanting to go to the ballpark. After dealing with grocery stores and gas stations and other public places during the week, I can imagine a lot of people thinking they just don’t want more stress being around strangers.

  19. zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 5:31 pm

That minor league is also experimenting with a rule that when a team pulls their starting pitcher they lose the DH for the rest of the game. As a way of trying to force teams to leave starting pitchers in longer. But the NL doesn’t have the DH yet. Or I guess that’s coming anyway.

  20. zumiee said, on April 15, 2021 at 5:48 pm

Moving the pitching rubber back would end a lot of pitching careers of older pitchers. Kershaw couldn’t survive that rule, losing a foot off of his fastball. Imagine the weird situation of having driven a Hall of Fame pitcher from the game, by a rule change.

  21. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2021 at 5:53 pm

If they haven’t raised the basketball rim, they ain’t movin’ back the rubber…

  23. Macdog said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:08 pm

Nice to see James and Mrs. J at the ballpark and bringing home a W — also Sarge at the home opener. I’m thinking of going to Giants-Phils next Tuesday, since I’ll be in the Philly area that afternoon. If I could roll up to CBP and get a ticket, I’d definitely do it, but . . . that’s not the case. To get a ticket, I have to download the MLB Ballpark app. Ok . . . except they require that I buy a minimum of two tickets, and I plan on going solo. The cheapest ticket is $20, so buying two isn’t too bad, though I still don’t see the logic of having to buy two. And with this app-only system, the scalper (or finding someone with an extra ticket) market will likely be non-existent. I’ll probably end up going to the park and seeing if there is indeed someone with an extra ticket on their app. As far as Covid, I have one shot down and one to go.

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:10 pm

      that is such fucking bullshit.

    • chipower9 said, on April 15, 2021 at 9:47 pm

I have a friend who went yesterday, solo, and had to buy two tix. Bleachers were $12. He said traffic was a breeze in and out of The City.

I’m ready for a game, but waiting to get my 2nd jab (4/26). If ya go, have fun Mac!

  24. Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:13 pm

There is no way they’re changing the distance of the mound to home plate. NONE. Experimenting is good, they can gather some info. But that’s not a distance you fuck with. Why not make the bases 91 feet away from eachother? Because that would be idiotic. No chance, ZERO, they move the mound further away.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:39 pm

True. It’s all in the math. What with 9 innings and three outs per inning, that multiplies to 27–which mathematically should be the number on each team’s roster. It adds up.

      • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:47 pm

If I remember my grade school math the result of a multiplication problem is called the “product”…
        Useful stuff they taught us…

  25. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2021 at 6:59 pm

I wonder if the many Grave Duggar bashers here will actually root against him to the detriment of their team.
    That would be shameful…

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:18 pm

i thought about that too. My guess is no. As much as I joke about loving him (mostly because of the epic nickname) I wonder if the vitriole is coming from the same place? Either way, if he gets a chance and rakes, Flappers will embrace him. Those who actually remain amongst the living, I should say……

    • willedav said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:24 pm

Once he gets in a game, if ever, he is still a giant.

funny I noticed today in Braves-Marlins game our old buddy Ehire Adrianza, AKA Triple O for out of options, is still around and got pinch single and scored a run for Braves. I used to get on this guy and Sabes/Bochy got megashit here for keeping him and playing him.

Turns out he has over 1000 ML ABs in his ongoing career and has hit 17 HRs including pinch hit 3 run bomb over weekend. so you never know. Duggar is currently sitting on 400 some ML ABs, and 6 HRs.

But realistically, no decision by current brain trust is made in a vacuum—Giants calling up Wade Jr. first, signing him in first place in off season along with Skye Bolt a week ago, tells you all you need to know. and these decisions come from Zaidi Harris and Kapler, with input from coaching staff and the horde of info from analytics.

  26. xoot said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:14 pm

The record for pinch hit HRs in one month is four. Pablo has three. His SLG % is 1.500

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:16 pm

what he’s going is just astounding.

  27. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:17 pm

Hilarious that they’re gonna “allow” 20% capacity when Belmont Park opens next week.
With the exception of Belmont Stakes day, they probably average 2-3% on weekdays and 5-6% on weekends…

    • Flavor said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:18 pm

      that is funny.

      • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2021 at 7:35 pm

Supposedly they’re gonna renovate the place and bring it into this century now that they’ve built their state of the art arena in the empty parking lot. The usual shopping and maybe a hotel will follow.
Aqueduct will be mercifully imploded when Belmont’s finished upgrading…

I got my Covid shot at the Meadowlands racetrack. Hadn’t been at that track for almost 30 years, it’s right next to the football stadium. The post-shot 15-minute recovery area was where you’d stand in line to make your bets. So hey, these old racetracks are good for something.

Cool Mac. How you getting back and forth to Philly?
Oracle is hour train ride for me, and it took noticeably longer on return trip Flavor and I had when we went in 2019. Story is traffic is starting to return to Bay Area on freeways. did read story in Chron about $50 to park near the O. Not wild about being on train but if I did go (only to catch up with others here) I guess that would be how.

There’s an imminent split arising between the interests of vaccinated individuals and the broader public health concerns. As a fully vaccinated, mask-wearing, liberty hating, fanatically willing slave to big government, I have very, very little risk at this stage. Over the next month or so we’ll reach a point where the health care system won’t be overstressed by the number of potential Covid patients, and I won’t give two shits about anyone stupid enough to catch it.

  36. Carstie Clausen said, on April 15, 2021 at 10:54 pm

How will Giants batters do versus their mound opponent tomorrow? Pitching for the Marlins will be 26 Y.O. Daniel Castano, a lhp who pitched a few innings last season, but still has rookie status. His ERA was relatively low, but so was the number of strikeouts, which I seem to recall as one fewer than BBs.

This one could easily skew in two disparate directions: (1. Traditionally, Giants have not done well against newbies–or (2. in the warm, muggy Miami climate Giants batters might include one or more who rise above the Mendoza line before the day is over.

Wake up early, gang. Looks like game-time is something like ten a.m. PDT.
