Piling Up Shut Outs

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 20, 2021

I was against the Curt Casalli pick up because it was silly to think his meager offensive output in that joke park would carry over to Oracle–and he has looked predictably worthless with a bat. But the Giants weren’t getting him for his bat and maybe there is something to this theory that pitchers jizz at the sight of certain pitchers fingers.

Either way, another shutout that is more impressive than what Cervelli did in 2015 since that was before the juiced ball era…….Or maybe all you need is an Italian sounding name?

What’s more impressive, the start to the Giants season or what Steph Curry’s been cookin’ up over the last few weeks?

Four of 16 wins are shut-outs. Will take that shit all day long and twice on Sundays. To be honest, I haven’t been following the NBA at all. I see a blip occasionally about Steph, but seriously could not tell you what the hell he has been doing.

Webb on the bump today. Keep this train a rollin’…

Can’t argue with results but man, all those cross-ups make me nervous. Also, I didn’t like it when Casali looked like he was showing up Garcia by yelling at the bench because they couldn’t get their signs straight.

low bar for offense with back up C, I guess is the rule. James mentioned CERA, another stat that Twin said whose value had been debunked iirc.
When was last time Giants started a season this well?
Also, will look for NYT obit on the late Mr. Silla. thanks for great pic from Loo end of thread. According to brief obit in Chron he stood less than 4 feet tall and had been in Circus as bareback rider tumble and trapeze artist, and came to Hollywood in 1962 as stuntman.

    • James said, on April 20, 2021 at 8:13 am

WD, I probably ridiculed that stat before TF did, and was just having some stupid fun with it last night. There is of course defensive metric data now beyond CS % detailing squishy things like pitch framing, which I was very skeptical of, but that has apparently proven its worth.

      • willedav said, on April 20, 2021 at 8:37 am

yeah I laughed when I saw what you wrote about CERA stat last night. Don’t remember context of what TF said about originally, just that he exploded on someone about it.
Plans to attend another game? Padres will be up here next month, has me thinking.

      • James said, on April 20, 2021 at 8:51 am

Yeah, we are going again on Thursday night. Catch ’em while they’re over 500. Let me know if you decide to go and need another in your pod, assuming you’re comfortable with that.

Steph is unbelievable. He’s better than he’s ever been and that would seem to be impossible given his age and the fact that he’s already been a hall of famer for several years now. How does he exceed that already incredible career at the age of 33 (and no doubt beyond)? I don’t know, but he’s doing it. All time NBA player, without question.

I doubt there are too many naysayers left, but, if there are, they can certainly piss off.

  5. Lurker John said, on April 20, 2021 at 7:53 am

Good win for the Giants. Gausman wiggled off the hook numerous times, to his credit, but he labored all night long. That’s the sign of a good pitcher, because no one has their A stuff every time out. I’m a little concerned about Yaz and have to wonder if he’s simply reverting to form at this point. He’s been pretty bad at the plate. Hopefully he turns it around and soon because this team still desperately needs some offense.

Casali seems to be better defensively than any backup catchers the G’s had last year, by a fair margin, but the cross-ups are strange. You can chalk up the ones with Garcia the other day to the language barrier I suppose, but that excuse doesn’t exist with Gausman. It might be a case of trying to get too cute with disguising the signs.

And what was up with calling that timeout on his own pitcher in the middle of his windup? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

10-6 is awesome, especially considering the couple they’ve blown, but it seems to be a bit precarious. But I’ll take it. Webb and ex-Giant Wheeler today.

  6. alleykat69 said, on April 20, 2021 at 8:34 am

Hey Mario Mendoza must be happier then pigs in slop watching Casali hit.
He’s establishing his own new category at under .100 with a 095 avg.The Casali Line” hop on board..
But wtf you can’t argue with a guy that argues with his pitchers and still gets results with 4 shutouts in any language he communicates in its working!!

  7. Flavor said, on April 20, 2021 at 8:35 am

KNBR keeps calling Gausman our *ace*. -seems like kind of an antiquated term in today’s world of openers and piggy backers. Plus, come on, that guy’s no *ace*

    • willedav said, on April 20, 2021 at 8:43 am

what does he have to do to establish that for you? He dominated last year and has one bad start so far that he battled back from. His split is absolutely unhittable (Athletic column by Baggs says 1-73 til yesterday) and has good fastball. As LJ said he battled command and hung in there vs. Phils and shut them down.

      • Flavor said, on April 20, 2021 at 9:13 am

DeGrom is an ace. There are others. Gausman is just our best pitcher

It’s also my wife’s 60th birthday today. She has 6 high school friends from various parts of the country at our house so I got the fuck out of Dodge.

Gasman was wild and lucky. Gutty win, but the hope is he can tighten that shit up and go 7+ with some regularity. Good game, and good to see the pen not barf up one of his lesser starts, but better teams will hit him hard if he puts 2 runners on every inning. That being said, he’s off to a strong start. The hope is Cueto comes back fairly soon and the pitching staff stays healthy.

I had no real hope for DeSclafani to be nothing more than a placeholder, but he has looked solid so far. The magic pitching rejuvenation machine the Giants regularly employ seems to be working yet again.

And yeah, Steph is out of this world. The shot near the end against the Celts was flat ridiculous. Dribbling left, and falling away toward the corner with a guy in his face, and it didn’t even touch iron. And he does that 5 times a game along with everything else.

    • Winder said, on April 20, 2021 at 9:16 am

Charlie- I would have hit the road running too. What a great start to the season. Most thought our hitting might be our saving grace this year and overcome our pitching. It is no surprise what good pitching can do but it is a surprise that the Giants pitching has come through strong so far. Lots of nail biters so far.

  10. James said, on April 20, 2021 at 9:04 am

LJ mentions the two blown games above. The bullpen’s OPS against is identical to the starters, just over 600, which is outstanding. Another way to look at those blown leads is to imagine the runs they’ve given up spread out over the other games. The two losses the bullpen is “responsible” for would have likely come in a couple of those other close wins. Naturally, you could also assume that the BP should simply have been even better than it’s been . . . .

    • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2021 at 10:01 am

They don;t get to average out the bullpen failures.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2021 at 10:52 am

If you spread the runs out over other games, does that take away the losses? I’m not sure what the point of this is? Can you move extra runs in a win to a 1-run loss? No. That is how statistics lie.

      • alleykat69 said, on April 20, 2021 at 12:56 pm

The Mariners are in 1st place, yet have given up more runs then scored.
Which tells me they get blown out 10-2 then come back and win 3-2..2-1 a run negative of minus 7 yet they win the series 2 games to 1. Would that stat hold up with negative runs against the opponent all year?no way, but it’s intriguing to know u can get blown out then pitch a couple shutouts to stay competitive..

        Those Mariners . . . .

    • James said, on April 20, 2021 at 12:10 pm

Hey, as I said, it’s your right to demand that the bullpen should have been better, allowing fewer hits, walks, and runs than they have so far, and to claim that the team record would be 12-4, if it weren’t for inadequate relief pitching.

To put the case another way, if the opposition is still putting up an OPS of 610 against our bullpen a few hundred innings into the season, the Giants will be contending for a playoff spot. Or more realistically, expect the bullpen to be worse than it has been until now for the remainder of the season.

      • James said, on April 20, 2021 at 12:25 pm

        Innings = bullpen innings.

  11. Lurker John said, on April 20, 2021 at 10:20 am

Steph’s step back move is crazy good. He had one against the Sixers that gained him about 10 feet of separation, I think against George Hill, a pretty good defender, and he then proceeds to bury a 28 footer. Just money and so fun to watch.

K’s experimenting. Maybe he feels that an uprising could begin if he bats first in an inning–or conversely that he could be just the guy to cap a rally. Way the team has been hitting so far, a bit of experimentation might shake things up a bit. What’s to lose? Guess we will see in a few hours.

      • Carstie Clausen said, on April 20, 2021 at 2:34 pm

It’s not a matter of belief, but of fact. She was on the scene in Minneapolis and made some statements that even got the presiding judge to muttering about the possibility of a mistrial. Those Blackrobes are pretty touchy about what they consider interference in the process. We’ve got a couple of attorneys who post here. Perhaps one or both of them would have some views from more professional perspectives than either you or me could offer.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 20, 2021 at 2:41 pm

I know what the fucking judge said, i.e., in part he said, “A Congresswoman’s opinion really doesn’t matter a whole lot.”

Was he upset about Waters and other media? Absolutely (as well as other media statements). However, in addition to the aforementioned sentence, he indicated in about a half dozen different ways yesterday – that it barely amounted to a hill of beans.

MLB.com website. Scroll down the middle. Nice DeRo piece on the Giants success this year to date. “The Expendables”. Recognition comes our way, one-tenth of the way into the season. However, it may end, this one has been sheer excitement, nail-biting action.

They emphasize both Farhan’s dumpster-diving pickups and the Bore-Core’s veteran presence and knowing how to win the Big One. Check it out. Fun.

  18. Carstie Clausen said, on April 20, 2021 at 2:31 pm

Gott got DFAed for the second time this year as McGee and Webb return from their brief Covid time-out. Sam Selman, probably the first to get the next bullpen call, was reassigned to Sac-town, likely heading up the taxi-driven, on the cuspidors.

It might be interesting to see how teams are doing with vaccinations. mlb says that when an organization hits 85%, strict protocols can relax. Last I heard, only four or five teams had reached that as they say threshold (Giants not among them).

  28. Carstie Clausen said, on April 20, 2021 at 5:04 pm

Wearing him down just a bit. Twenty pitch inning. Slater and LaStella really extended Wheeler and Webb laid down a good sac bunt. It took a few pitches, but he got Yaz. Funny thing, on Gameday, I maneuver the mouse into a probability factoring zone for the next pitch. So far it has worked better on Wheeler’s locations than on any other pitcher to date. He’s very logical in his approach. Hoping Giants hitting coaches/manager are keeping track of that and get the word out. Wheeler is fairly predictable—maybe 30% ratio.

Ballgame. Wasn’t even good for four. Position players had Wheeler sweating, but now he’s likely to cruise.
Longman role may be apropos for Webb. Evidently too much pressure when the innings add up. With some luck and a bit of application he could reconstruct himself to another Use More of Petit.
