Foraging A Path To The Post Season
Mr. SportsDude asked: “My question for everyone is at what point to do start taking this seriously enough to think we could contend? Mid May?”
Well, we probably need to start at least playing the contenders first. We had a couple of games against LA and SD but that was early and they were missing Tatis. And as we can see now, both those teams are ROLLING right now, thankfully against eachother but those are the two heavy weights in our division. There’s no question about that. We have a nice, unexpected record but it has been compiled against the weakest teams in baseball.
So that leaves us looking, at best, at the final wild card spot in the NL. Just as we thought before the season started. Well, just as we thought (in our wildest dreams).
I’m just happy we are playing well and there’s nothing wrong with banking wins. It really is a credit to Kap and Z the way this cobbled together group has done so far this year…..

Also a BIG birthday shout out to ERVIN! Flap Nation honors this great Flap lurker (and occasional poster)
Definitely unexpected to be 14-8. Still aren’t hitting much, and lot of concern there. SS and CF, manned by likes of Crawford Dubon and Slater major issues. These 3 are guys Z and Kapler planned to play a lot at important defensive positions–so how much (or little) offense can you live with?
Pads Dogs series look like Ali and Frazier. Texted Pads fan godson I don’t think anyone else can go toe to toe with LA and take 3 of 4 from them in their own yard. Seem to have found Achilles heel in Dogs pen.
Not to mention after spending off season on one shiny bauble (Gausman) and rest in Brebbia aisle.
Yes, Giants have not had a tough schedule. They’ve played only six of their 22 games vs. teams currently with winning records — Pads and M’s. The rest are sub-.500, though Phils are only one game under. And what the hell happened to the Reds? They had a winning record when they left S.F. and were in first place a week ago today, but have lost 7 straight and now reside in the basement. At least the Giants are taking advantage of this stretch and, as Flav said, banking wins, thanks mainly to the starting pitching. Gotta keep it going this week vs. the Rox at home.
And who do the Dodgers play next? The Reds.
Just noticed this in the standings: Every NL West team has a plus run differential — even the Rockies are +6. Also, the Marlins are the only NL East team with a plus RD (+1), the other four teams aren’t even close.
bold point made
I expect Lynch not Shanahan is making this call…thankfully…
Loo. THoughts?
Not much to argue there. Shanny got a lot out of Matty Ice, and one of 3 years from Jimmy G. But injuries have killed 2 of his 4 seasons here with G going down.
I wouldn’t say gross negligence, but this pick will determine a lot. That being said I will be pissed if they get Jones. I just don’t think he’s gonna be dynamic enough. Lance is the guy I’ve wanted all along
I am 100% with you chuck on the QB issue.
Give me Justin Fields all day any day. What makes Trevor Lawrence even a sure a thing? He certainly came up short in bowl games when Fields dusted his team throwing 6 TD’s passes. It’s all been a smoke screen with zillions of bs rumors from the shoe shine boy on the corner to Eddie Munster Kiper Jr.I’m sick of everyone ripping Fields including the same teams that want to draft him by trying to put any possible doubt in their heads.
Fortunately Shanahan has seen from the past finally, that you can have your bromance love for Matt Ryan and even worse with Kirk Cousins but u will never win a SB with them, he’s going the new breed of QB’s like so many teamsListen I could even live with Lance who’s very raw and played far less competition then either Jones 🤮are Fields but Shanahan has the team right now to get it done and Fields can lead them to be that scary team in football for years to come..
I have read multiple articles today that say Fields is out of consideration…that the Niners will choose either Jones or Lance.
April 24 1967 Wilt and Sixers beat Barry and Warriors for NBA Champiionship.
Barry averaged 40 in 6 game Series. Sixers led by Hal Greer at 26 and Chet Walker at 23. Wilt averaged 18 and 28 boards a game, Nate Thurmond 15 and 27.
Barry 44 points on 16-38 in Game 6, Sixers 41-64 from free-throw line, Wilt going 8-16.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/196704240SFW.html
64 free throws????
thanks Mac. Game 4 Greer got 38 and Chet Walker 33, Barry 43 in losing effort to put Philly up 3-1. Lot of cool players on both teams. Wilt was also assist leader for series and played almost every single minute of every game vs. Big Nate.
My expectations of how the season will continue to unfold is weighed on whether I am willing to pay for the mlb package. I expect we will come back to earth and June Swoons are usually the time of reality checks. So I am not spending my money yet. I also expect Farhan will be trading any asset older than 32 including the kitchen sink and keep adding younger talented value. The entire starting staff except Webb and he may not be starting once Cueto is back could be traded and the Woods, Sanchez and DeSclafini are pitching way over their heads and all three could be leveraged nicely and then add in potential bigger potential upside trades for Gausman and Cueto…
Some Dubs talk. Fun game against the Kings and Walton had his team really active with their hands. Kings are fun to watch and should finally have a path to being more competitive soon. Dray and Steph have been really ball lazy recently and not taking care of the rock. They will tighten up and however the play in plays out will be interesting to watch. I just put $50 on the Suns to win the NBA championship at 24-1 odds:). They could still as the #1 seed in the west..
I turned off the Flodgers game after they went up 7-1 amd was shocked to then learn of the blown leads…great for the Friars and will make the division much more exciting. Even more shocking than seeing the Giants record is the Bum throwing a 7 inning no-no on 87-91 mph junk…
“this pick will determine a lot.” Uh, yeah you can say that again. If they fuck this up we are FUCKED. They can’t miss. If they miss, fucking fire them who cares, they’ll be long gone and we’ll be stuck in pergatory.
MadBum succinctly sums up his no-no.
funny
exactly. THAT’S the game.
I think most important take away from this is—note to Unc, there is a potentially dangerous loony living in your ‘hood. Might want to alert NextDoor or others nearby to keep a lookout.
Huh?

“I’m ready for the season to get going, don’t know if I’ll be able to hang in on those 1AM and it’s only the 7th inning games. One rule I wish that MLB would put in place is to have every team’s opening day be a day game.
On the Giants, Kapler is going to prove me wrong big time, the old ones will prove everyone wrong and the platoon of RufDick will break down just as Ramos is ready to be called up.
I’m going with 82 wins.”
So far, Kapler is proving me wrong, he isn’t just a body builder that can read the highlighted numbers in a spreadsheet. The Elders have hit some key HRs to win us some games but Belt and Craw need to get those BAs up and Longo needs to stay healthy. I’m still not big on RufDick as starters, so hopefully minor league games start soon.
Also, as an added bonus, Farhan is proving to be a junk yard genius. Only 68 more wins to get to 82.
Bauer/Tatis rivalry is the one for me right now.
Between Tatis jr showing up Bauer with his one eyed closed rounding 1st base after hitting a homeruns off of him, to Bauer accusing him of peeking in last second to steal the sign from the catcher, these 2 will be going after each other all year, stay tuned for fireworks..
“64 free throws????”
Remember that in those days every foul was a free throw or two, depending on if the player was shooting or not. Every single foul sent a player to the free throw line. Good thing they changed the rules on that, and added the whole bonus concept. The NBA was not necessarily super entertaining in those days. The NBA finals weren’t shown live on prime time until Magic and Bird arrived in the NBA.
Yeah, I remember 3 to make 2 and all that, but that is still an ungodly number of free throws.
If the Niners fuck up this pick, it won’t sink the franchise. The team is built pretty well and could weather a fuckup at the quarterback position. The pisser to me is I think the 49ers were ready to go all-in on Deshaun Watson until his massage parlor fiascos came to light. He’s a proven stud who would have worth what we gave up to move into the 3 spot in the draft. But that ship has sank.
The point being, we won’t know for 3 seasons whether the pick is worth it given the way this usually plays out (see Rams://Goff), and this front office has been adept at restocking draft picks with various mid-level deals. By the time this craters, they will have other options available. It very well could sink Shanny and/or Lynch, but then again, it may not. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
The NFL world gave Shanny/Lynch and Co an A+ for their 2017 draft. It turned into an F looking at it now as it garnered George Kittle and squadoosh in the 10 available picks. The rest of their drafts have been all over the place. I wasn’t set on Kinlaw last year as CB seems to be an issue they refuse to address, and he may round out nicely, but the rush to judge on these things is always there. And the uproar will be HUGE if they draft Jones.
I’ll be pissed but it will have to play out over the next 3 seasons regardless of how anyone feels about it.
From the Athletic
The San Francisco 49ers hold the third pick in the NFL Draft when it kicks off with Round 1 on April 29. The 49ers own nine selections in the seven-round draft.
That No. 3 selection should serve as a pivot point in the draft after quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson presumably go to Jacksonville and New York, respectively, with the first two picks. San Francisco plans to grab its quarterback of the future as it seeks a replacement for the oft-injured Jimmy Garoppolo, with an NFL Network report on Sunday indicating the decision is down to Alabama’s Mac Jones and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.
49ers’ needs in the draft
Quarterback: The 49ers announced this in the clearest way possible by trading this year’s No. 12 pick, two future first-round picks and a 2022 third-round pick to Miami for the No. 3 selection, where they’ve indicated they will take a quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the roster as the presumed starter for now, but the 49ers are looking for better availability and perhaps a higher ceiling at the position when they draft their future starter here. Whether that’s Alabama’s Mac Jones, Ohio State’s Justin Fields or North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, this position will be the first one Shanahan and Lynch address on April 29.
Cornerback: The 49ers retained Jason Verrett in free agency and also brought back Emmanuel Mosley and nickleback K’waun Williams, so their starting lineup is largely set. But Verrett and Williams are on one-year deals and the 49ers still need more depth and a long-term answer at outside cornerback. This regime hasn’t invested higher than a third-round pick on a cornerback (Ahkello Witherspoon in 2017) and may have to finally do so.
Defensive end: The 49ers have more bodies at the position after signing Samson Ebukam and Jordan Willis in free agency. But with Nick Bosa (knee) and Dee Ford (back) coming off serious injuries, the position remains murky. At the very least, they could use another quality defensive end — like Ronald Blair in 2019 and Kerry Hyder in 2020 — to anchor their second-team unit.
Offensive line: The 49ers have three good options at tackle in Trent Williams, Mike McGlinchey and Shon Coleman. Still, they have to make a decision on McGlinchey’s fifth-year option next month, and Coleman is signed for just the 2021 season. It might make sense to take advantage of an unusually deep group of tackles this year. Right guard, where Daniel Brunskill is penciled in, has been a problematic position in recent seasons and the 49ers may want to find someone who can be groomed at center behind veteran Alex Mack.
Wide receiver: The 49ers have 12 receivers under contract, but only three — Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and special-teamer Trent Sherfield — seem like locks for the Week 1 roster. As with offensive tackle, this is a strong draft for receivers and there might be some excellent slot receiver options in Rounds 2 and 3.
49ers’ draft history
First-round picks from the last five years
2020: DT Javon Kinlaw, pick 14: The 49ers traded DeForest Buckner to Indianapolis last year for the pick used to draft Kinlaw, whom they hope will be a less expensive version of the All-Pro defensive tackle.
2020: WR Brandon Aiyuk, pick 25: The 49ers moved up late in the first round to take Aiyuk, who finished fifth among NFL rookies with 60 catches, sixth with 748 yards and tied for fourth with five receiving touchdowns. He added two rushing TDs.
2019: DE Nick Bosa, pick 2: A slam-dunk choice after Kyler Murray went No. 1 to Arizona, Bosa was the defensive rookie of the year in 2019 but missed the final 14 games in 2020 with a torn ACL.
2018: T Mike McGlinchey, pick 9: One of the league’s better run-blocking tackles, McGlinchey’s struggles in pass protection last season often made the highlights, and the 49ers have a decision to make on his fifth-year option.
2017: DL Solomon Thomas, pick 3: Part of a disastrous first-round class in Shanahan and Lynch’s first draft, Thomas was a bust as a top-three pick. He signed with the Raiders in free agency this offseason.
2017: LB Reuben Foster, pick 31: Another late first-round trade-up, Foster flashed playmaking ability as a rookie, even though he struggled to stay healthy. But off-the-field legal issues led to his release in November 2018.
2016: DT DeForest Buckner, pick 7: The 49ers’ mounting expenses — Arik Armstead and George Kittle were also due new contracts last offseason — forced them before the 2020 draft to trade one of their defensive mainstays to Indianapolis, where he then signed a four-year, $84 million deal.
2016: G Joshua Garnett, pick 28: Selecting Stanford players in the first round hasn’t been kind to the 49ers recently. Garnett started 11 games as a rookie but has played in just 10 NFL games since. He played three games for Washington last season before retiring in October.
This is how it should play out, they get Lance, he sits behind JG, if the Niners pass protection improves they should have a winning season. If the pass protection stays as it has for the last 10 years or more and JG gets hurt because of it well there goes their season. If JG does get hurt, Lance will play, but he will hand off to a running back for the rest of the season. Because the o-line definitely knows how to run block
Anything more on Yaz? oblique bothering him yesterday all I heard.
“oblique tightness” according to Slusser yesterday afternoon
1. Austin Slater (R) CF
2. Wilmer Flores (R) 2B
3. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
4. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
5. Buster Posey (R) C
6. Darin Ruf (R) RF
7. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
8. Mauricio Dubon (R) SS
9. Anthony DeSclafani (R) P
thx Chi. Gomber is LHP. Giants have seen him once already game they won 2-0. He went 6 1/3 only gave up 1 hit but walked 4. Last outing he beat Stros and pitched well. In giants game he got 11 ground outs/4 flyouts.
Good stuff. We’re getting to him early tonight, tho.
I forget, is anybody here a Mac Jones fan? If not, I’ll bravely stand up for him!
More from the Athletic:
“Are you on the Mac Jones bandwagon?
QB Coach 1: I am driving the bandwagon. I noticed something last year after Tua Tagovailoa got hurt and Mac went in and they stopped running RPOs and started calling dropback stuff, I was like, ‘Oh, they trust him.’ But he’s more than just that. I think he is the best thrower of the football by a lot. Zach Wilson is freaky; but he’s not hitting people in stride on time. Mac is processing. He’s accurate. He’s layering it. He has pinpoint accuracy and throws with anticipation. Those people who say all he did was throw to guys who were wide open and threw from a clean pocket, turn on the A&M, Georgia or the Michigan and Auburn games from last year where he got the shit beat out of him. He’s getting hit and he’s getting moved.
People say he’s not athletic, but what are we talking about? Just because he looks bad without a T-shirt doesn’t mean he’s a bad athlete because he has baby fat. I love him. He was substantially better in the interviews than all of the other quarterbacks.
QB Coach 2: In my mind, if I had to win right now, this year, he’s the most advanced quarterback of any of them. I think Trevor’s the best. I’m cosigning on him, but his system adjustment will be much bigger than Mac. Jones is gonna walk in Day One and just have to flip terminology because he’s gonna know pro football. He’s been coached by Sark (Steve Sarkisian). He understands run checks, understands moving protections — not that these others don’t, but he’s on a different level.
The question is, are Mac Jones’ physical tools worthy of being a top-5 pick or even first-round? I don’t know that his physical abilities warrant that, but if you tell me that I have to win now, I think his physicals are good enough. How many guys in the history of football in 12 games against top college competition threw for 4,500 yards, throw 41 touchdowns and only four picks and completed 77 percent in a pro system? Some guys at pro days don’t do 77 percent on air.“
That’s another thing. We DON’T have to win now with a new guy. We aren’t the Jets or Jags. Barring a trade between now and the season, we aren’t gonna throw the QB to the wolves so that argument isn’t part of our deal. We have a solid team that we can develop a QB behind. Like KC with Mahomes and Alex Smith, and Pittsburgh with Big Ben. Or even Green Bay with Rodgers and Favre.
Lol when it turns out Alex Smith ends up the placeholder for every team..
49ers first big splash at number 1 and they take Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers( always wanted to be a 49er)
who was quoted in the draft room after the Packers grabbed him at 23: How do you feel about being passed on by the 49ers? “Not as sorry as I’m going to make them feel”
This is almost the same scenario..Top rated QB’s left Fields maybe Lance and they’re considering Jones?
Don’t do it again 49ers once was enough to screwup on!!
Ha I said while ago mobility less important to me than passing accuracy reading D and making quick decisions. Devonta Smith won Heisman—who got him the ball? Coached by Sark, interesting.
My fear is he was a good QB on a great team. The NFL is a different animal. Much faster and much less processing time. He won’t be behind a line that gives hin all that time to look at his reads.
agreed. Same fear.
It’s all fake news and smokescreens the only dynamic QB that checks all the boxes is Justin Fields in a division with Wilson&Murray. Run/Pass option is the way of the NFL now not a pocket passer.People can say what they want but besides Brady&Rodgers, all the playoff teams have a multipurpose runner passer(Wilson,Allen,Jackson) Looks like Shanahan is making the final call which wtf is Lynch responsibility anymore? They better be on the same page and be totally committed to whatever pick it is!They know the pick ever since they moved up to 3, and it should be Fields!Fields who had the most college starts among Jones&Lance and is game ready now when Jimmy G goes down again are maybe traded during the draft for more picks if a team gets desperate for a QB..
That’s pretty much what I said on my blog. I’m not clear what purpose it serves with all this prevaricating in front of everyone when it says so much about the decision that is made. If they pick Jones, then Lynch is cut off at the knees. He’s a de facto paper GM. If they pick Lance, I guess it means that the good ship 49ers is running as it should. Shanny runs the offense, Lynch runs the team. At least that is how it should be.
As I said, whatever they do, it’s gonna be a long haul before we really know whether it was the right call or not. I just know the screaming will be loud and long if they pick Jones. I could give a rat’s ass about the clamor, but I’m not in favor of that pick at all.
The screaming won’t start till after the long drawn out groan!!
Wasn’t accuracy the standout characteristic of the two best QBs the Niners have had? I know nothing about Jones other than the knocks on him here and that stuff in the Athletic. Is there anyone like him who’s flopped recently? Signed, genuinely curious.
Just saw WillieD’s comment above.
I would put Carson Wentz the biggest most recent flop but maybe resurrects his career. Goff as well???
Be bold Giants if Yaz’s is out any extended time with his oblique pull, call up Heliot Ramos now, these injuries are piling up fast and they need a spark from some fresh young blood..
Love that idea, Kat!
Dick in vs. lefty is pretty odd ain’t it?
Sure is Loo along with Ruf in RF are u kidding me in that Grand Canyon over there? Slater better be hyped up on coffee & cocaine to cover ground for those 2 stiffs..
No mentions of the closed archways of late. Not sure if the Giants are for real, but Oracle’s return to pitcher’s ballpark status is looking solid right now. Maybe warmer weather will change that.
Bozo cites the need for Craw and Belt to raise their BAs. On the other side, there’s the uncertainty of Posey and Longoria keeping their overall numbers up. Future road trips should help the offensive stats in general.
This is the second time I’ve heard Gimme Shelter blasting before a Disco start.
Disco 🕺 looking sharp striking out the side with the heater on 11 pitches!
My QB analysis is what hall of fame level QB has Nick Saban ever produced at Alabama??? Hurts left Bama…
No one and that will include Jones..
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/mike-yastrzemski-mild-oblique-strain-225939396.html
Score early. Score often.
Buster’s first non-HR RBI!
Here is a list on Bleacher Report of most yards thrown by QBs to play for Saban in his college career (list may be pre-Tua, but I think my argument holds) but it is a whole lot of NFL mediocrity and that is why the hell the better not go anywhere near Matt Jones (who seems like a copy of most of these flops)….
It’s Mac Jones but who gives a shit?
Matt are Mac would both both suck like your Stats prove GH.
Giants going old skool and playing the conga line…Cha Cha Cha….
Gomer Gomber is not fooling anyone!
Nice 4-spot to put the Rox in a hole right away.
Blackmon batting sixth, not sure I’ve seen that before.
Giants got 6 hits already off this guy.
They keep being patience and then rake.
They’re right on the curve ball/ breaking pitches..
Conga baby!
Gotta be rough on Bud Black to manage this bunch of misfits!
Longo smokes another 2 run double for a 6-0 lead.,
Short night and 3 RBIs for Longo, gotta get that guy healthy.
Short night for the Rox starter, too.
Dubey clears the bases!
It’s a forfeit!
Doobie Doobie Do!
Ruf stuff!
Did they ever clock Webb’s velocity speed running out that triple?
The Rox are like a fuckin Double A team.
Their fans must be ecstatic.
Why the fuck are they hanging on to FA to be Story?
GM Bridich resigned, so FO will be reorganized. Gotta wonder what they do by deadline. Team is going nowhere fast.
Story to the Giants would be a nice start at the deadline..
Highly recommend Hank Greenwald bio, really good read.
He was at Syracuse when Jim Brown was there.
I read that book. Yeah, very cool book.
Gotta love Kevin Mitchell.. That one handed barehanded catch is still one of the greatest of alltime..No disrespect to Willie Mays at the polo grounds are Jim Edmonds laying full out on the warning track!
Doobie Dubon doobie doing it again.
Posey power.
Who cares about that, he’s catching a shutout.
So true.
A healthy Buster is like the team made a free agent signing.
I like fields because of the ‘good QB on great team theory. That said.. Accurate passing is the name of the game. Running QB’s often have to run because they can’t do progressions at NFL speed. Every single running QB runs because they must. The ONLY great running QB is Mahomes. All the rest are just average+, The ones who have a great year or two suck soon after (Kap, newton etc) Murray hasn’t done anything.
If Jimmy good throw more accurately, throw deep, and not get happy feet, not one of us would give a shit if he could run. Has anyone EVER been watching a Pats game (TB now), a Cowboys game in 90’s, a SF or Miami game in the 80’s and watched Tom / Troy / Joe / Dan scanning the field and hoped they took off?? NO. We prayed they would keep scanning and fire the perfect pass in a small window for a TD.
Russell Wilson begs to differ. Lamar Jackson as well. Wilson has carried Seattle on his back for the last 4 years with his legs and his arm.
Don’t forget Steve Young and his epic runs.
Good points. I am not convinced you need a running QB to win it all. Hell, the Niners should have beat the chefs, and damned near did it with JG.
…if Jimmy could..
Color me surprised that Posey has found his stroke. He is not getting cheapies and he has his power back. I really didn’t think he would be this good.
Corbin Burnes lost today, but K’d 9 in 5 innings. Now has 49 K’s and ZERO walks in 5 starts.
Trubiscuit springs to mind as one of the recent busts at QB. He flew up the draft board from the middle of the 2nd round to the #2 pick for no particular reason.
I guess my question is has there been a QB with a career rating of nearly 200, and over 200 his final year who was a mediocrity as a pro.
Tim Tebow?
Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Sam Bradford
Nope, none of these guys.
FUCK!!!!
What are you yelling about?
You woke me…
Whoever DeScaffolding struck out screamed it as he went back to the dugout. With no crowds you hear a lot more of these guys scream out in frustration.
DeScaffolding is on cruise control.
You mean Casali has been schooling Buster in the art of catching.
Yes, I did post that before K&K’s comments, but I guess I’m ashamed nevertheless.
Ballgame! Nice CG shutout by Disco.
Need to bag as many W’s as possible against the Rox, etc. Damn near 1/2 our games in May are against the bums and friars.
Nice game, lots of runs and great pitching
And ya disco like dat.
Just another shutout for the team that leads the league in them!
Nice for Posey to join the club, and a superb outing for Disco CG 3 hit shutout with 9 K’s !! Who are these guys??
Before season started , Loo said based on sched 15-11 for April wasn’t out of question.
well there’s your 15th W, vs. 8 losses.
Well, we all know that’s because Loo is a smart mofo. Good call, Loo!
I’m not sure how I’ll feel about that prediction, if comes to pass.
Disco shutout!
You could’ve posted Clint after the 2nd inning.
🙂
“Kapler indicated Yaz is likely to miss 5 or 6 games” this week, according to Pavs on nbc site story. But they don’t want to put him on IL.
Typical Giants on injuries, take 2 aspirins and were check with you in the morning.
I’d prefer another healthy body up (Ramos) because of all these hamstrings, oblique, calf, lats, groins going on..
