A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Trey-Mendous Pick

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 30, 2021

Ok, I was able to relax, shat and shave this morning. This Mac Fatty stuff was seriously distracting me and weighing on me even more than the fat draped upon his frame.

But it was all for not, turns out it was a smokescreen! Why? Who knows? There was literally no reason for this.

Now let Jimmy go try to keep himself in one piece and maybe he wins us a SB on the way out of town. Here’s hoping Lance will respond to Kyle’s tuteledge the same way the SF pitchers jizz their pants when Buster and Casalli throw down their glorious fingers…..

Today is Oaks day and I have a couple of longshots if you’re interested…..

Yaz to the IL, Selman up. Dang he was just starting to hit with couple good weeks of power behind him.

The more I reflect on the pick last night, the more I like it. Of the three that were there as realistic picks, I like Lance the best of all of them.

Tonight begins another big test for our Giants. Friars took three of four from la bumbinos before a two-game split with the DBacks. Love to see us steal a series in Dago.

LMAO…good one. The natives were restless.

There are plenty of “experts” beefing about the Lance pick on SM. It wouldn’t be an NFL draft without that, no matter who the player is. It cracks me up, writing off a guy before he even arrives in SF for the first time. Shanahan has his guy, now it’s on him to make it work. Lance is an exciting prospect, so I’m confident right now that it’ll work out. Having Garoppolo around will be a good thing. Criticisms of him aside, he’s a professional and will not only do his job but help Lance in his development. I also think he’ll have a good year, if he can stay healthy.

  4. unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 7:49 am

Love the pick. Wanted him from the get-go.Hope I’m right.

    • chipower9 said, on April 30, 2021 at 8:18 am

I know. Happy for ya, brother. I definitely like him more than Fields (or any other QBs who were available). I hope Shanny, Lynch, and whoever else had their hands on the pick are right. But I was surprised, as I was drinking the kool aid and truly thought they would go with Jones.

  5. Winder said, on April 30, 2021 at 8:26 am

I think there was reason for the smokescreen. There was no guarantee the Jets were gonna take Wilson until they did. If they would have picked Lance it would have fucked everything up. I think the Jets took the biggest gamble of the draft. The System Wilson played in might not work so well in the NFL. Anyway, I am glad we did what we did. I was fooled by all the Jones bullshit myself.

  6. unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 8:37 am

That’s one thing I like about Lance. He played in a pro-style play-action offense at NDAKST.

  7. Lurker John said, on April 30, 2021 at 8:42 am

Well, I really didn’t expect Lance to be the guy, but he is and he’s certainly the stud athlete Shanahan has said he covets at the position, so I’m behind it all the way. Concerns are a serious lack of college experience and playing against second division NCAA competition, but he did play in a play-action system that pretty closely mimics what Shanny runs with the 49ers, and he played a lot under center, which is also important in the NFL so hopefully that eases his transition into the pro game. He won’t even be 21 until May 9th, so there is some risk here, but there always is. A lot of negativity on social media about the pick, but when isn’t there? You can’t please everyone and you never will.

I think JG stays and plays this year, hopefully every game, while Lance is coached up and allowed to learn and absorb everything he needs to be successful. I saw an interview with Lynch last night and he seemed genuinely impressed with Lance not only as a QB but as a smart, upstanding guy as well, with very good football instincts. It was with Keiana Martin from the Niners’ website and worth watching.

At the end of the day, this kid will need to be successful passing the football. I don’t care how fast a guy runs or how shifty he is or how high he can jump, the QB position in the NFL is and will always be about throwing the ball, on time and accurately, and it always will be. A lot of people lose sight of that and get obsessed with the metrics. There were reports (Booger McFarland?! Yikes) that he’ll need to improve his accuracy and that’s something you never want to hear about a QB coming into the league. It’s one of JG’s biggest flaws. But they said the same thing about Deshaun Watson coming out of Clemson and he shot out of the gates like a rocket ship, accurate as hell, destroying defenses with his legs, so I’ll trust that Shanahan saw what he needed to see on all fronts.

WELCOME TO SF, TREY LANCE! GO 49ERS!

good man. I think the 10 is the most likely winner of the Oaks but I love the 1/4/11 as longshots underneath. So a tri like: 6/10/12 on top, then those horses along with 1,4,11 in 2nd and 3rd.
I also have the 1/4/11 on top in my p3 and p4 just cause I think they could win and those will pay big if any of those 3 win.

      • Flavor said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:15 am

        i emailed you the tri. It’s $37.50

  10. snarkk said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:01 am

Well, Niner fans were ragging on Shanahan and Lynch for weeks for the possibility they’d pick Mac Jones.
Now that they’ve picked Lance, the Niner fans are still ragging on them. Similar to some fans ragging on the Zman for not getting the Giants into the playoffs after one year on the job. Let the professionals do their jobs…

    • djloo27 said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:06 am

Well if there’s one thing I’ve learned spouting my opinions here for about 14 years is that I’m usually wrong…

  11. alleykat69 said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:21 am

It’s amazing how the media, analysts, any sport jock supposed expert will try and get in are minds and create an illusion like a McFatty from the time of his workouts all the way to the last seconds of the pick, hell he was even on the freaking red carpet getting interviewed like he was the best thing since sliced bread.
I have to admit I was downright nervous and almost expecting the worst that Jones could end up the pick and I would of turned into a raging maniac.Any other flapper feel that way?But then i kept thinking all the capital they gave up to move from 12 to 3 no way do they do that to draft a one dimensional pocket statue?
Bottom line Shanny/Lynch played they’re cards tight to their vest the whole time and made terrific pick in Trey Lance only because the NFL is totally moving into the speed, mobile, strong, athletic QB’s that can make plays on the run, improvise when a play breaks down.If u don’t have a QB like that for the future, your organization is dead in the water. Just thrilled that the 49ers have young ( he’s not even 21 till next week) can hopefully under Shanny’s and others coaching will just make this team one of the powerhouses in football for years to come..

    • willedav said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:40 am

Kat, let me ask you–I understand knock on Jones, but if as you say ” NFL is totally moving into the speed, mobile, strong. athletic QBs”, that doesn’t describe any qualities of Garoppolo either. Yet everyone seems happy to have him around still. ?

      • unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 12:16 pm

It doesn’t describe Brady, Manning, Luck, Brees, Rivers, etc. The trend started in 2012 with Kaepernick, Wilson, and RG III. But if you can build an O line to keep a guy untouched, then those guys can thrive. Our line is still a work in progress so I like the escapability aspect of Lance.

I mean, look at all the turnovers from our QBs last year. 17 INTs, 11 fumbles, and 39 sacks is no way to protect a statue.

      • chipower9 said, on April 30, 2021 at 12:51 pm

Great reply, Charlie. I agree that while some teams are trending towards a mobile/athletic QB, it isn’t happening everywhere. You point out the guys who are currently the exception. Any QB who is going to make it in the NFL must be able to throw the ball accurately (timing and on location). I don’t care how gifted an athlete you are, if you can’t do that, you won’t last as a QB in the NFL, IMO.

      • alleykat69 said, on April 30, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Willied, It’s not a knock on Jimmy who still his a talented QB but with all his injuries and 2 seasons lost because of that, Kyle just became more frustrated knowing he has a talented team but a QB that was constantly in the whirlpool , like they say you can’t help the club from the tub, and except for that one season when he stayed healthy, but still missed the big throw to a wide open Sanders that probably wins the SB.I don’t know if he makes that throw and they win the SB, there probably not even mentioning a QB upgrade for sure..

Jimmy wasn’t even an original pick by Kyle though he coached him up bigtime, and maybe winning those last 6 games when they 1st got him in a meaningless season was just a mirage for all the hype going forward.
Yes I’m sure Jimmy is pissed off that they lost confidence in him and threw him under the bus, but every player knows “ITS A BUSINESS “ and these things happen. So far he’s handling it with utmost class.
I do wish they keepJimmy around just cause he can learn more from him and you don’t throw him in the fire day 1.. Although I expect Lance will get in games with special packages that Kyle will create for him in his power running game schemes along with bootlegs and throws off of that, and who better fits that then Trey Lance..

  12. willedav said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:35 am

Couple minutes on ESPN this morning, commentator who’s name escapes me in btw Stephen A and Max K brought up something interesting. Given what SF gave up, what is timeline for when Lance is in there? Mid season start, or limited plays? Only if G struggles or gets hurt?

    • chipower9 said, on April 30, 2021 at 10:52 am

From a post-draft interview I read with Shanahan, there is no timeline. Shanahan said “It’s going to be very hard for a rookie to come in and beat Jimmy Garoppolo out. He’s a very good player.” Shanahan went on to say he will see how Lance does in the OTAs, but that Jimmy is the QB for now. Shanahan insisted that Lance will only be the starter when and if he proves he’s better than Garoppolo.

      • Winder said, on April 30, 2021 at 11:31 am

Sounds good to me. Learning the system first seems like the way to go.

  13. unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 12:20 pm

They would love to see Jimmy G lead the team to the playoffs while Lance gets some garbage time in wipeout games. It would increase Garoppolo’s trade value while giving Lance time to absorb the offense.

Then again, Jimmy G could suck balls and force the issue by getting hurt and we simply get a 5th rounder for him by the end of the year while Sudfeld leads the team?

Point being, in today’s NFL you have to be ready at any time to jump into the fire. Esp as a guy they traded the farm for. If Jimmy and Seinfeld don’t get it done, then Lance will be in the mix as a starter.

    • Winder said, on April 30, 2021 at 12:30 pm

I think Sudfeld is strictly a PS qb. I think they might throw Rosen out there if they don’t feel Lance is ready.

    • chipower9 said, on April 30, 2021 at 12:55 pm

With Lance, they currently have five QBs: Lance, JG, The Joshes (Johnson and Rosen), and Sudfeld. When the final roster is set, they will have three, so someone will be the short person out. It will be JG, Lance, and ???

      • Winder said, on April 30, 2021 at 1:25 pm

chi- I think they already cut loose Johnson mostly because of his age.

  14. unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 1:51 pm

Lance, JG, and Rosen most likely.

    • alleykat69 said, on April 30, 2021 at 2:10 pm

I don’t know on that 3rd guy Chuck. Why do they go out and give 252,000 guaranteed and 990k base salary to Sudfield? which seems shocking. Rosen and Sudfield will battle it out in practice for the 3rd spot the loser is dumped.Josh Johnson? No way possible just a camp filler..

Pittsburgh Steelers pick of Najee Harris the local kid from Antioch was a great pick for a team that desperately needed a RB!
But it’s more then that he is a class act individual, growing up with 4 siblings and along with his parents they were living in a homeless shelter growing up for awhile. And where does he have his Draft day potential pick?
At the homeless shelter anticipating the pick with family and staff members! Quite an inspiring story from this young man staying grounded..

    • Winder said, on April 30, 2021 at 2:42 pm

I worked at the Concord homeless shelter years ago. There were lots of people from Antioch and Pittsburg. I wonder if that was the place.

It will be on Kyle to get the O-line up to speed on pass protection, I understand your bottom line statement, pass accuracy, etc. but there is no way a QB can perform when he does not have time to make his reads. Brady does not get sacked very often because of his o-line.

Gravedigger laying in wait at the bottom of the grave, uh, lineup.

  22. willedav said, on April 30, 2021 at 4:52 pm

Just seems weird to me that consensus here is, we’re OK with G BUT only for another year (if that) until shiny new toy is ready and we don’t want his replacement to be anything like him going forward.
If he isn’t what you like right now, then why hold onto him for another year and hope it’s different from injury plagued past?
He’s not gaining more mobility–he is what he is at this point.

    • Flavor said, on April 30, 2021 at 4:57 pm

It is suicide to start a rookie on yr 1 especially a guy like Trey coming off covid season and small conference. Let his learn for a year. jG got us to a SB, or we got him to one, either way he’s not an idiot. He just can’t stay healthy

  23. Flavor said, on April 30, 2021 at 4:58 pm

When did The Grave Duggar come back up? DID I miss something?

    • djloo27 said, on April 30, 2021 at 5:03 pm

It’s a ghostly move that only the Grave Duggar could have pulled.
It’s not on the internet anywhere as of the time I posted the lineup…

  24. unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 5:01 pm

Because we want to ease Lance into the job. Shanahan’s offense is not easy to get a full grasp on. I think they’d trade Jimmy if they got a big offer, but I don’t think Jimmy’s stock is very high right now. They’d want to get at least what they gave up to get him, and that is a 2nd round pick.

He is prolly worth a 3rd. No reason to rush him out of here. The ideal sitch is he leads the Niners to the playoffs and ups his trade value next offseason.

It behooves (niegh neigh!!) Jimmy to play well and do what he can while he’s on the field.

  25. alleykat69 said, on April 30, 2021 at 5:16 pm

They come out of the gate let’s say half way 8 games at 4-4 are worse then the keys get handed to Lance and Jimmy G will be Wally Pipp and move be replaced..

    • unca_chuck said, on April 30, 2021 at 5:23 pm

No. The only way Lance gets in is if Jimmy gets hurt and the backup is horrible.
