A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Reaching Out To The Flap Community For Help

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 12, 2021

Ok we are taking a moment away from baseball to talk about Cassie. She is a friend of the daughter of my main man in Reno, PaSalon. You’ve seen him post periodically here. San Dawg you had dinner with him in Reno.

Anyway, this sweet 20 year old kid was surfing in Hawaii and got hit with a rare condition called Surfer’s Myelopathy. She was instantly paralyzed from the waist down.

Here is her gofundme link and a couple of pics of her:

https://gofund.me/77152925

Some of you have already seen her. Remember the video I made years ago on the Wendy’s prezel bun burger review? She’s pops in at the 26 second marker and again at the end.

I know times are tough and I don’t expect anyone to donate to this gofundme especially if you don’t even know Cassie. But think back for a moment to when you were 20. You had all those hopes and dreams…..crushed and never realized years later. lqtm. But hey, at least you got to have them right? Nobody’s hopes and dreams should be crushed at 20….

Oh, and another thing: Her dad, who is younger than me, has dementia and obviously can’t help her right now.

If you can’t give any money I understand. Just hold some good thoughts for her. I am convinced that positive energy goes a long way in life.

    Minors update from yesterday:
river cats hit 3 HRs but lost 10-7, as out of 5 pitchers used only Gott worked an inning unscathed. Santos gave up another HR.
In Richmond Jacob Heyward doubled and homered, hitting .500 in early going.
San Jose hit 3 bombs including Matos Schmitt (SD St, draftee) and Toribio (none by Luciano hitting .154) in 5-1 W over Stockton.

Cal Highway Patrol arrested guy in Tesla who was sitting in back seat while it self drove across Bay Bridge. He pulled himself into front seat as they were getting him near Powell St off ramp Emeryville on I-80. Multiple reports were made as people noticed him, and it turns out he’d been cited late April for similar stunt in Oakland.

Must have somehow disabled function that is supposed to disallow this once hands come off the wheel. But,
    Stupid Lives Matter, I guess.

You’re welcome, brother. Grateful to be in the position to help someone in need. And love that shirt in the burger review (you know I am a big Deadhead). Truly hope things get better for Cassie.

What a reminder on just how fragile life is. Thoughts and prayers are with this family.

Our ML club continues to amaze. None of us saw this team being in first place with one of the best records on MLB. In addition to this, the team now has five prospects in Baseball America’s Top 100…

I think Kyle Harrison is going to be very special. Time will tell but the kid is off to a good start…

Donation done. And I’m better at good vibes than you might think. They’re working too.

Pillar hit a 2-run triple today for the Mets and made a nice leaping catch at the fence. Mr. 1.0 got off to a dreadful start this season, but he’s been playing much better of late. Good to see, easy guy to root for. Also Harvey getting roughed up in his return to Queens.

  12. xoot said, on May 12, 2021 at 10:19 am

Craig, if you and Loo feel like it, I’d really appreciate some insight into the Baffert bullshit. I’m a total outsider and I’m puzzled. If you run a doped horse in the KY Derby, aren’t you doomed to get caught?

  13. Macdog said, on May 12, 2021 at 10:27 am

So sorry about Cassie, wishing her all the best.

  14. Flavor said, on May 12, 2021 at 11:44 am

First of all, thanks to all of you guys who gave that poor kid some $$$ and/or some best wishes. It really means a lot. I still can’t imagine what she’s going through or what she’s facing……
Regarding Baffert, trainers that use steroids are just like baseball player who use them. They have masking drugs and they expect them to work. Obviously, Baffert fucked this up. And I’m glad he got caught. His excuse for using this topical cream is utter bullshit and, hopefully, nobody buys this bullshit.
For the most part, if a horse’s test comes back dirty the trainers get busted. Although for the most part the lesser trainers get busted worse for obvious reasons. The sport wouldn’t exist without the biggest trainers.

    • djloo27 said, on May 12, 2021 at 11:55 am

More importantly, the biggest owners who naturally employ the biggest trainers…

    • snarkk said, on May 12, 2021 at 12:10 pm

What happens to the vets involved with these drugged horses?
Can’t you get your license pulled for this kind of stuff?…

  15. djloo27 said, on May 12, 2021 at 11:57 am

I’ll never forget how listless Big Brown looked in the Belmont post parade without his illegal dose of Winstrol…

  16. snarkk said, on May 12, 2021 at 12:08 pm

BF – I Contributed to Cassie.
She reminds me of my younger snarkkette. I’m going to make sure I give her a hug today, and air hugs to Cassie.
I looked up the condition — there sometimes is full recovery, but depends on each case, of course.
I’ve never heard of this — it just happens because of positioning of your back on the board, essentially. Blood flow gets restricted to your spinal cord, it’s like your leg going to sleep if you sit a certain way pinching the artery into your leg. Truly weird; life can be damn unfair, and this is an example.
Hopefully, she’ll be one of those with full recovery ! …

    • Winder said, on May 12, 2021 at 1:13 pm

Yeah, I had never heard about before either so i looked it up. It sounds like it could happen to anyone who doesn’t stretch before getting into the water and constantly lays on the board instead of sitting on it waiting for the next wave. Hoping a miracle for Cassie. I had never used go fund me before and was a little Leary. But it turned out to be simple and was glad to help.

I’d never heard of surfer’s myelopathy. I took my sons to Maui over the xmas/NYs holiday one year to teach them to surf. Hired a guide, who always managed to find secluded peaks. Wonderful trip. They learned. That’s the way it’s supposed to go. I’m so sorry for young Cassie’s injury.

Sitting on a board, scouring the horizon for the next set, is one of the joys of the sport. I spent so much time doing that in Santa Cruz, I developed a significant case of surfer’s ear, but only on the right side. Prevailing wind issue.

  17. Bozo said, on May 12, 2021 at 12:57 pm

Sorry to hear about Cassie and hoping for the best for her. I also added to the pot. Stay safe y’all.

You know, I was reflecting on this blog last night, about how most of us have been talking Giants baseball, sports in general, music, food…life for over 10 years. I have made some wonderful friendships here and have been blessed to meet some of you in person at Giants games, etc.

What is even more amazing is the generosity of you all with your blessings and donations for Cassie. I am damned proud to be a part of this family. Thank you Craig for organizing this blog and keeping it alive.

    Well said, Chi.
Prayers for Cassie and her dad…

road trip starts tomorrow,4 vs. Pirates (last in Central) 4 vs. Reds (right above them).

Texas who just left, one spot ahead of Angels. Rox, in before that, have won 12 games all season and sit dead last in West. Only winning teams SF has faced so far are pads, Phils, M’s at .500.

Rox just lost first game of DH vs. Pads 5-3. they loaded bases with 2 outs vs. Melancon, who recorded 5 out save on pop fly in short RF snagged by Austin Nola, who was playing 2b. Melancon is now 12 for 12 in saves, and according to cbs site is owned by 95% of fantasy. Same guy reviled by 95% of Giants fans in his day here.

    • willedav said, on May 12, 2021 at 3:32 pm

Pads have bunch of regulars now on Covid list (positive test or tracing) including Hosmer Tatis Myers Mateo and Profar.

      • snarkk said, on May 12, 2021 at 4:35 pm

Giants were just exposed to these guys. How do the Giants not become involved somehow? I heard today that SF is near 85% vaccination of players and staff, but there are some refusenicks who may prevent getting to 100%…

      • xoot said, on May 12, 2021 at 4:41 pm

85% vax is the mlb threshold for lifting some tough restrictions. I’d love to know how they see that working. Wonder if every ump has been jabbed. But being outside with a breeze definitely helps.

      • snarkk said, on May 12, 2021 at 5:03 pm

Yeah, if you’ve got 40-50 or so players and coaches and support staff in the clubhouse, does that 85% apply to all, or just players? If all, that means 15% , which is about 7-9 ,can stay refusenicks and just wear masks for the duration of the pandemic? …

    • djloo27 said, on May 12, 2021 at 3:53 pm

He earned the derision of Giant fans literally from his first appearance.
Maybe he was never healthy with us.
      I still wouldn’t want him…

      • Bozo said, on May 12, 2021 at 4:57 pm

I read somewhere that Melancon said that not having crowds last year helped him feel more comfortable, so we’ll see how well he does as more fans start attending games. I don’t know if the sold out crowds fucked him up for us, but he needed a change for sure (so did the Giants),

      • willedav said, on May 12, 2021 at 5:34 pm

I remember that, blew a save in AZ for Bum. Sometimes things just don’t work out, and I’m sure he was never healthy til after surgery, as you surmise. Just odd he’s still going at 37 and as much as Braves paid him, was mostly OK there as well.

  21. James said, on May 12, 2021 at 3:42 pm

Added to the fund. Hope she’s one of the lucky ones.

  22. djloo27 said, on May 12, 2021 at 4:00 pm

Half expect the Grave Duggar ain’t on the flight to Pittsburgh.
I don’t think a 5-3 roadie is too much to ask for if this team is for real…

  23. unca_chuck said, on May 12, 2021 at 5:29 pm

Damn, that is rough. The hope is, sometimes it does reverse itself.

  24. willedav said, on May 12, 2021 at 5:55 pm

From what I read, Solano might be playing rehab games while Giants are on road trip, so doubt he’d be activated until they return next Friday for weekend set with Dogs.
Dickerson went on IL May 7 or 8, so he wouldn’t be activated until middle of road trip either.
Presently I think they are man short (12 vs. 14 pitchers) for position guys, so doubt anyone would be sent out until trip ends. they are allowed to bring along 5 man taxi squad on road trip-emergency C, etc. in case of injury

  25. Flavor said, on May 12, 2021 at 6:37 pm

Again, thank you guys so much for giving her some cash and/or giving out positive vibes. I know she feels the love with so many strangers trying to help her out

  26. mrsprtdude said, on May 12, 2021 at 10:49 pm

That absolutely sucks. My son herniated a disc and had back surgery at her age. That was rough. This I can’t even imagine. Donation done.
