For His Next Trick….
Theoretically the bullpen should be the easiest thing to fix. Lots of guys can’t be starters but most of those guys can still throw gas for an inning. Zaidi has been an absolute magician composing this team. I can’t believe he would let something like this confound him. He’s an easy guy to have faith in, let’s let him work his magic.
he survives, to dig another grave.
Moronta’s still down/out?
As to be expected Z strikes out on number of fringe acquisitions. Wade Jr is in that category (never understood why he was a Giant), along with Wisler (unused in while thankfully) Vosler (brief time up showed zip), Bolt yada yada. Despite multiple injuries to IF Estrada is still in Sac, and Casali is an awful hitter.
Pen way more complicated and they’ve already shuffled guys in/out like Santos who had all too brief effective innings. Jarlin Garcia was one of best guys yesterday. Just way harder to evaluate and I’ll stick to my theory–most of them have ahard to recognize sell by date and only have so many effective innings in them.
But then they get repackaged and wind up pitching effectively again elsewhere. Because of the small number of innings they throw, it’s usually hard to judge in advance how run of the mill BP arms will perform for your team.
As Zum said last night, was a helluva interesting game vs. rebuild mode Pirates. Giants hit 3 bombs and had 3 OF assists–when has that happened before? Tauchman to Crawford to Casali play was excellent by all 3, beautiful to watch unfold. Couple other nice plays made on IF too by Longoria Crawford Dubon–even Wilmet and Cueto got in on the one he got nicked at 1b that had to be overturned into an out.
I don’t ever watch any postgame stuff, but Kap speak makes about as much sense as Boch speak used to. It’s just how mgrs nowadays roll.
Solano last night 3-3 with double in rehab start for Sac, batting 1.000 as they routed Dogs AAA club. Thairo 3 more hits double and HR (#3) batting .395. Beede 3 shutout innings 1 hit 4 Ks. Kazmir relieved him—this is who is at Sac. Webb/opener role for one for them?
Ramos 0-5 as Richmond lost. T Beck Stanford guy (from Braves) started and took L, 4 innings 6 hits 4 runs and bomb.
It’s a long season and all teams go through what we did the last two nights. Just as winning is habit forming so is losing. We need to take this one today. There is no give up in this team just some mistakes.
As James said it’s really hard to evaluate guys out of pen based on limited innings. McGee worked 20 pretty decent innings for Dogs last season after they picked him up when Rockies released him, but they let him walk. Dogs pen has major issues this season too.
Dogs had Watson for part of a year before allowing him to walk too, when he signed with SF and lasted 3 seasons. Just such a crapshoot, and pitching coach/other players can make such a difference. Pitchers talk to each other, and sometimes one guy helps another find a grip on a pitch that works for him.
We got to see Ruf get .333 of his career OF assists in the span of .002 of his total OF innings.
I was cursing Doval yesterday, this morning I realized that first hit he gave up was a pop fly into RF that Yaz may or may not have made a play on. We are singing his praises without that bit of shitty luck. Stallings hit the ball on the ground reaching for a pitch, a result you’d take most of the time. There are also more than a few examples of successful one-pitch relievers. The Pirates’ closer is a right-handed version of McGee. Also there’s this
https://tht.fangraphs.com/why-are-sliders-so-hard-to-hit/
Interesting, thanks. One of the commenters does make a good point re: same handedness. romo’s frisbee was death of RHs, but he had harder time locating it to LHs. As you said, Doval had bad luck to get burned by RH pop fly into no man’s land. also unfortunate he hit a guy when the back foot slider actually did just that.
Well, whatever our mojo is with SPs it certainly isn’t translating to our relievers.
But we seem to have nothing but fastball/slider relievers. And they are hanging sliders too much. They are easy to hit when they are up in the zone despite the article. The guys pounding our relievers apparently haven’t read that.
So James, your advice is to keep running them out there to figure their shit out? You want to see McGaaaaaah out there again in the 9th?
Speaking of stats, 4 HRs in 17.1 innings for McGaaaaaaah.
10 saves, 3 blown saves in 19 appearances.
Doval is an even bigger mess.
4 HRs in 9 innings.
Less the pitches than command of them by individual. Wood doesn’t throw harder than 92, but where he puts sinker slider and change is fantastic and he rarely gets any pitch hit very hard. others struggle with it game to game. Just baseball and what makes it fascinating.
Looks like Pittsburg is doing to us like we have been doing to everyone else.
Yeah, but it is not their MO. This is a terrible team having a Billy Hamilton weekend. It is agonizing to watch.
It is hard to watch.
Fuck. He’s safe
Lucky
Nice comeback there.
Picked a good time to stop whacking.
Weeds that is
Chuck, I’ve said before I’d have more confidence in McGee, if his fastball was consistently at 95+. He has to be able to go back to back games with his best velocity. I think he has a role . . . .
Dunno, swap ’em out, or let the current crew get the bad innings out of their systems. Probably a coin toss, but some new faces would be welcome.
James.. McGee is just not showing 95 consistently anymore and when a one trick pony and hitters laying off his high fastball now and he has to lower it to throw a strike the hitters are teeing off on him. They really need to just had the closing gig to Rodgers who’s far more effective. They should also switch roles with Barager and McGee with Barager pitching the 8th and McGee are Garcia the 7th. Hell even Littell has looked good enough to move into a better slot..
Dubon has really flashed the leather( that running catch last night in the outfield sprinting all out from 2nd was one of the best I’ve ever seen) and today the running grab against before hitting the netting , super as well along with that fake throw in the rundown and nailing the runner at 3rd.
I didn’t think he looked right swinging the bat on his last time up, thinking he jammed that left wrist on the catch, probably doesn’t want to say anything since were out of 2nd basemen’s in this revolving door of banged up players..
And here we go
Geez speaking of one pitch pony here comes Mr.SLIDER in next..
Wishler hasn’t pitched in awhile, I get u have to use your pen but…
Oh boy. The groove machine. Wisling past the graveduggar.
The tryouts continue.
DOWN!
Fuck. Down already
Jesus. Posey is insane. He should tell him to throw them in the diet
If they don’t hand the ball to Rodgers in the 9th I’m going to be rally pissed 😡
Really
Dirt
That was a good pitch. 9 pitches in.
Hey. I’ll take it. Way too many pitches up rho
Big Yaz bomb!
Just what we needed
Finally!!
Just what the doctor ordered!
Yaz going yard!!!
Fuuuuuuck
My god, I almost had a heart attack when Rogers threw to 2nd.
Down goes Frazier (finally), Giants win!
Well a split isn’t terrible. But. . .
Big Win going into Cincinnati with some momentum!
Man they should of won them all, but that’s baseball unfortunately..
Kinda funny to hear Estes say, “Not sure Dickerson would have caught that” on Tauchman grab. Rogers finishes them off.
First place 40 games in.
Tough day for Pittsburgh fans.
Chuck said “Dirt” earlier after mistype…drove by Campbell Little League park yesterday AM and it was rolling with live action. Dirt’s son used to play there, so hope he still is if family is still in area.
Plus I’m reading funny history of 1912 World Series by Mike Vaccaro btw Red Sox and J McGraw’s NY Giants, and Dirt used to post those old guy pics from Dead Ball era.
I read that one! Great book!

Congrats to Curry for winning the NBA scoring title. Another great accomplishment in his Hall of Fame career.
Only other player to win scoring title age 33+ is Jordan.
Yeah that was a funny comment by Estes Willied.
No way in hell does Dickerson make that catch..
Hell of a game by Dubon and that fake play to nail the runner at 3rd was incredible.
Of course if he doesn’t pull it off are throws it away he would of been roasted, Flemm was waiting for it during the review to be overturned so he could lay into him it seemed..
Estes grew on me as the series went on. I like how he uses some well-placed stats during the broadcast.
Yeah I like Estes, he’s very articulate and knowledgeable compared to a dry/boring and uninspiring Lopez..
Pretty funny. Getting the Aussie feed for the Warriors game
Glad we got outa there with a split. Looks like the Pirates are one of those teams that play us good.
The latest diamond in the rough signing by Zman is signing Alex Wood to a 1year deal back in January. He’s now 5-0 with an ERA of 1.75 and should be an Allstar if he keeps this amazing pace going, what a steal..
He works quickly, throws a lot of strikes, has good stuff. He was a perfect pitcher for “getaway day.”
Big win. Being swept by Pitt would be bad.
Curry joined an elite group…. Jordan Chamberlain Abdul-Jabbar and now Curry as only 4 to have multiple scoring titles, MVP’s, and championships. Nice group to be part of
mm elite indeed. Tamika Catchings went into HOF. Her Dad Harvey played for Neliie in 80s for Milwaukee on 50 win teams that Celts (Bird etc.) and Jabbar’s Lakers used to dominate. Right place, wrong time.
We won 2.
Arenado strikes again. 3rd bomb of weekend in Petco, 9th of year 2-0 Cards in first inning. Just glad he’s doing it to somebody else.
It’d be nice if Arenado hits HR and Cards actually win a game there. Also good to see Fish get one in L.A,
ESPN, of course, interrupting the flow of the game for stupid pointless in-game interviews. Why in the world do they think viewers want these?
The number of interesting things said in in-game interviews:

i didn’t see this, what a sick play
Yep. that was the play of the game. Came inside just in time to see that,
