Somehow Still Winning

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 18, 2021

There’s really nothing left to say about the bullpen except:

  1. If this is there worst problem to have that’s a good thing considering how many holes I thought this team had to start the season
  2. if you think about it the law of averages suggests they should get better. These are major league pitchers, however bad they are, no major leaguer comes out failing and sucking every single appearance.

Kevin Pillar is ok. He is the ultimate gamer who got lucky, too. Easy 1.0 for him dealing with that near tragic event last night.

Interesting pitching match up today of 2 guys who probably have revenge on their mind.

Haven’t checked the weather yet….

Another W, baby. I agree Craig, you would not expect guys to regress at this point (just past the 1/4 point of the season).

Looks like possibility of rain early in Cincy, but clearing by game time (this looking at two different weather apps).

  2. willedav said, on May 18, 2021 at 7:30 am

Bart got 2 more hits including double for Sac yesterday, now hitting .382. solano got 4 ABs, Wade Jr. homered in 7-6 L. SP Banda got hammered, and has given up 10 runs in 11 innings over 3 starts. Leone took L in 9th.

Roster move coming once Solano is activated, maybe by time Dogs get here for weekend series.

    • snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 10:47 am

Maybe the hitting lightbulb for Bart is going off. Give him a half season at AAA with consistent game appearances to improve his defense and pitcher handle, and seeing good breaking balls. It’s way early to give up on this guy and trade him, IMO. He’s got power to burn, just a question whether he can harness it…

  3. willedav said, on May 18, 2021 at 7:34 am

Nice story in Athletic on Beede, working through rehab pitch limit starts in Sac. Still has black shoes, great look. gotta admit, not fan of white shoes by Rogers and others, though pitching is fine. MCC guy had column talking about normal routine of Giants games, ho hum through 6 with good outing by SP, some runs by offense( though not as good as last year) and then things get more exciting by 7th. like last night.

    • chipower9 said, on May 18, 2021 at 9:21 am

I fucking hate white shoes…think the A’s would look so much better with black…

  4. Macdog said, on May 18, 2021 at 7:43 am

“Multiple nasal fractures” is the official injury, but yeah, good to see that’s the worst of it for Pillar. Mets announcer said Pillar got hit in the chin playing with the Giants vs. Pads two years ago, but I don’t remember that one.

  5. unca_chuck said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:05 am

Well, some guys just suck and hoping for a rebound that may or may not happen can be futile. But there’s little to be done but rotate through some of the AAA guys. Unless we trae one of our starters for pen help. Hey maybe we can get Yusmeiro back.

And apropos of nothing, this cracked me up.

  6. alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:06 am

Yeah I heard Beede was hitting 96-97 with his fastball, that’s a good sign with his new we can rebuild him arm. He’s hoping for a June return, he’ll even out of the BP that would be a helpful bonus.
The other guy besides Wood being a complete steal by Z is now turning out to be SS/3B/2B super utility player Will Wilson formerly a 1st rd pick by the Angels. He is raking the ball for High A Emerald Nuts 🥜 batting .415, 3 HR’s 8 RBI’s with OPS at a blistering.1329. Z thinks he will be with the club sooner then later, and with all the injuries in the infield sooner is fine with me..

Glad to hear Pillar wasn’t hurt worse, that was horrific to watch ..

  7. djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:09 am

These horrific beanings always bring back memory of Conigliaro…

  8. unca_chuck said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:42 am

Yep. I remember getting that SI when i was a kid.

Moronta moved to the 60 day DL. Damn.

    • alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:58 am

That’s not good news for Moronta ever coming back this year.
Z moving him to the 60 day DL opened up a spot to sign Hunter Bishop’s brother Jaden? to join the organization after being released by the Mariners.

  9. alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:50 am

Yeah I was thinking of adding in Conigliaro the worse beaning of all time that basically ended his promising superstar career with his eye injury ( partial blindness?) then later went on to be a below average tv sports guy in the Bay Area for KPIX I believe?
Another beaning to the eye was to Dicky Thon playing for the Astros, another promising career cut short due to blurred vision after his beaning..

    • Macdog said, on May 18, 2021 at 9:23 am

Ray Chapman dying after getting beaned on the head in 1920 might be considered the worst all-time.

  10. James said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:51 am

HBPs at highest rate ever per Athletic. Maybe it’s time to flatten the strike zone and make those phantom corner strikes legit. Harper got hit in the face earlier this year. 2 players getting hit like that in 40 games is a warning.

    • James said, on May 18, 2021 at 8:55 am

And intentionally throwing at someone should finally be eliminated from the game, if there isn’t already a mandate that’s been circulated by MLB.

  11. James said, on May 18, 2021 at 9:05 am

Peralta has given up a bomb in 7 appearances for the Yankees, but is otherwise pitching like 2020 for them so far.

  12. Winder said, on May 18, 2021 at 9:10 am

Lots of bad beanings over the years. The one I remember that had some long term effects was the Jim Ray Hart beaning. It took a promising kid, put him on the self and If IIRC he never really came back.

    • djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 9:51 am

      https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/jim-ray-hart/

      • Winder said, on May 18, 2021 at 10:31 am

Thanks for that loo- he had a much more stellar career than I remembered. And, it looked like the drinking affected him more than the HBP’s. I can remember sitting and watching the games with my dad talking about him and saying he could have been so much more. Just another reason to hate Drysdale and Osteen.

  13. unca_chuck said, on May 18, 2021 at 10:35 am

Yep, that 1970 team was the first Giants team when I really started following all the players. Jim Ray Hart was a fave. Chris Speier’s rookie year as well. He had Tito Fuentes were such a cool double play duo.

  14. gianthead said, on May 18, 2021 at 11:18 am

Would have hoped best case scenario for this road trip would have been 3 wins in Pitt and splitting the series in Cincy…so 5-3 was a good outcome and still easily within reach…then take two against the F’n Flodgers….

  15. alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 11:33 am

Rennie Stennett 71 has passed away after battling cancer.
Most of his career with the Pirates winning 2W/S titles,71 and 79 last 2 years with the Giants watching him play 2nd base on crummy teams. He set a MLB record by going 7-7 in a nine inning game once..
    RIP Rennie

  17. djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 12:07 pm

I’ve read that Hart’s drinking was at least partly to relieve the shoulder pain.
He was such a favorite of mine and I remain bitter that the Giants did not see fit to commemorate his passing with one of those patches as they did for Davenport who was deserving, but couldn’t carry Hart’s I.W. Harper bottle.
Anyone remember if Beck got a lousy patch?
    Doubt it…

  18. Flavor said, on May 18, 2021 at 12:08 pm

Damn, Rennie Stennett AND CHarles Grodin both dying. Those 2 hurt.

  19. djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 12:10 pm

Grodin was magnificent in the original Heartbreak Kid & Heaven Can Wait among others that I probably haven’t seen…

  20. alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 12:28 pm

Grodin was a master scammer teaming up with DeNiro in Midnight Run.
    Such a big loss!

Giants claim side arm reliever RHP Trevor Hildenberger from the Mets ( Loo scouting report? other then his stats suck lol) local kid who played high school ball at Archbishop Mitty, then at Cal Berkeley,Snarkk’s stomping grounds..
and optioned him to AAA.. Also moving Tommy LaStella to the 60 day DL meaning he won’t be available till the first week in July..

    • snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 3:21 pm

Criminy, I thought LaStella had a minor injury. He’s been pretty much a bust so far…

      • zumiee said, on May 18, 2021 at 3:25 pm

He got hurt running from one base to another, I think. Maybe the players should have stationary bikes in the dugout and try to stay loose. They sit or stand in the dugout, and then a few minutes later sometimes they have to sprint on the basepaths and they pull something. I think basketball or football would have figured out something by now on that. Baseball just kind of accepts those types of injuries.

      • djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 4:04 pm

Wilmet just did exactly that, Zum…

    • djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 3:46 pm

Midnight Run is an awesome movie. Dennis Farina and Yaphet Kotto steal that flick.

Rennie Stennett? Bad Giant, decent Pirate.

    • Flavor said, on May 18, 2021 at 4:31 pm

it’s not his fault he was overpaid. He was part of my childhood.

    • snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:19 pm

Yeah, no disrespect, but Stennett was a terrible acquisition…

  27. unca_chuck said, on May 18, 2021 at 4:20 pm

Blows my mind that movie was made 33 years ago.

  28. unca_chuck said, on May 18, 2021 at 4:22 pm

They need to get Solano on a plane train or automobile.

    • willedav said, on May 18, 2021 at 4:31 pm

What’s with all the muscle pulls. Now Flores with a hammy? He’s 29, it’s not like he’s ancient.
Temp in Cincy is high 60s, not cold.
What’s the training staff doing / not doing to get and keep these guys loose and limber ? …

    • djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 4:59 pm

I think game time temp was like 80, Snarkk..

    • alleykat69 said, on May 18, 2021 at 5:07 pm

Flores is just worn out, granted no excuses but without LaStella and Barrels he just wasn’t getting a blow. It’s amazing how even Crawford is holding out.Belt and Longo breaking down as well, it’s a MASH unit in there every night with these old farts..There lucky Dubon is healthy.,
Screw the BP we know that’s a constant problem, but they need a bench right now,if Barrels is even dicey, bring up Vosler are Will Wilson right now..

    • James said, on May 18, 2021 at 5:13 pm

2 automatic outs at the bottom of the order shouldn’t be something you get away with.

    • snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:28 pm

.098, that’s pretty hard to do.
Kat, yeah, I’d call El Presidente back for some catcher duty, even he should be able to do better than that…

  47. snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:22 pm

Littell – where’d he come from?
His 84 mph slider there had a huge “Crush me” sign on it heading into the kill zone.
Looks like the ZZ Top member #4 that got cut before they made the big time…

  48. snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:26 pm

Giants with 17Ks out of their 27 outs.
    That’s astounding.
It should be really hard to win that way.
At least it used to be…

    • James said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:34 pm

Doolittle excepted, they faced nothing but 97+ all night, with no script to follow for the breaking pitches. That’s also the new reality.

    • snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:38 pm

This game is a poster child for the new brand of boring MLB baseball.
A game full of strikeouts punctuated by the occasional walk and HR…

      • djloo27 said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:40 pm

I dozed off several times, but I’m pretty tired in general…

      • James said, on May 18, 2021 at 6:45 pm

As I’ve said before, I have no use for watching weakly hit grounders and flyballs by the team I’m rooting for. As boring as any strikeout. Plus that kind of contact doesn’t drive up the pitch count, which is essential for beating pitchers like Castillo. And I love watching SF pitchers get their Ks. It’s exciting.

      • snarkk said, on May 18, 2021 at 7:48 pm

17Ks for one team in a game is not my kind of game. Not to mention the other team’s Ks (Reds had 8, total both teams = 25)
Why have great athletes that can catch, field, throw and run on defense, if they just stand out there for 1/2 to 2/3 of the ABs? That is total boring ass baseball, and robs fans of entertainment from defensive plays. No wonder younger people don’t want to watch, it’s like watching paint dry. If a called 3rd strike or a whiffed 3rd strike is now the result in half the ABs of games, not in a pitcher’s duel of starters, but by no name relievers fire-balling 97 mph every inning from 5-9, then count me out of being a fan of that kind of game. If that were the game in the ’60s, we’d have Mays and Clemente standing around in the outfield instead of making spectacular, legacy-building plays…

      • James said, on May 18, 2021 at 10:31 pm

Between Mays and Clemente, the only defensive play I know is the one we’ve all had pounded into our brains.

      • djloo27 said, on May 19, 2021 at 6:30 am

Did you ever see Mays play, James?
A routine fly ball was entertaining…

.096 is hard to impress anyone.I don’t think Z/Harris gives a shit right now as long as there winning. But any extended skid and they u would think they go with Bart/Tromp.There just giving both more extended AB’s for now to be ready for a code red situation..

More K’s because pitchers throwing every ball as hard as they can. Bound to some that got away. neither of the 2 guys hit in the face were in a situation where they were hit on purpose..

    Go Giants!!
