Losing With Less Than Your Best
I don’t care if some say (stupidly) that batting average doesn’t matter anymore. Hitting .111 is not acceptable. And when you lose by 1 run starting your Z-league catcher could easily be pointed to as the reason you lost. Shit I’d rather have 41 year old El Presidente out there at this point. In fact Kap left BOTH the team leaders in batting average out of the starting line up last night (Buster and The Grave Duggar).
As we patiently await the ominous foreshadowing of the aged POTD to coalesce, we seem to have staved off the worst of it with a bomb from one and a run scored from the other.
Still, Flap Nation turns its tired eyes to Buster Posey and wonder “will tonight be the night he plays again?”
Exactly, more than a little. It’s freaking May already. There’s 112 games and 4 months left to go.
Unless you believe Kap’s opinion on the lineup is what is handed to him by FO/analytics dept., I’m not gonna dis him for who he puts in there. It’s worked to tune of 30-20, far better than anyone here would have imagined, and yes Dodgers are unsurprisingly still probably best team in baseball or at least NL with Padres not far behind.
As Loo confirmed last night, Posey has not ever played 3 games in a row. And hasn’t been injured and is having so good a season his legion of detractors for last few seasons now complain when he isn’t in there, highly ironic.
There were 7 other hitters not named Casali (who truly does suck, a rare Z miss) who produced 3 runs and hit couple bombs in a tight game. Dodgers twitter was blowing up at Roberts for bringing in reliever who just happened to suddenly give up bombs.
They hit one more than SF did, which is ultimately the difference.
And no, I strongly disagree “Kapler is FOS.”
if he thinks a rivalry game is the same as a random game vs AZ he is clueless, how about that instead? And so are you if you believe that bullshit.
Ha sure it hurts to lose to Dogs, but flipping out over games in May is ridiculous. If it was September 28, more understandable. Not now.
How do you know what Kapler thinks about rivalry games, or what goes into why he makes out a lineup?
I think it’s possible that Kotter doesn’t completely get the magnitude of the Giant-Dodger rivalry.
Don’t forget the stadiums were empty last year.
A longtime NL West guy like Bochy certainly got it and predecessors, Dusty & Felipe lived it.
But as WD says, who really knows who’s making out the lineups in baseball these days?
Not ever played 3 games in a row???? Now that sounds a little dramatic…
This season, GH…
Hey, other than a couple of mistake pitches by Wood, that easily could have been a W. 8 Ks and no BB.
None of us should be surprised with the bums handing-us our asses so far (two of the four were one-run losses and we could have easily won those). As WillieD says, they’re the best team in MLB, or certainly the NL (friars are right there, too).
We still have the third best record in the NL, and only two AL teams with better or the same record as us. If you would have asked me that we would be 30-20 at this point, with the 3rd best record in MLB, I would have laughed.
Bart is still out and not playing for Sac. Tromp last night 1-4 with double, batting .213. Yamaguchi pitched and took L, giving up 4 hits 3 runs in 4 innings, ERA at 5.89.
Bailey played 1b for Eugene, 0-4 with rbi. He’s hitting .224, OPS of .661 with 2 HRs in 76 ABs.
So um, help not on way for backup C.
Funny that Chron had column on Vogt the other day in AZ, who said he wasn’t at all surprised Giants were doing so well. Had a great season 2019, but Z chose to just let him walk at time.
Luciano a triple shy of the cycle yesterday in San Jose. Now slashing .260/.325/..507.
Ramos now at .297/.388/.500 in Richmond.
For what it’s worth.

Not sure how to make that more compact.
Deleting it would work…
Lol, I don’t know how to do that either.
Did Diego Rincones just recently turn to baseball and turn life around after being associated with the Colombian Cartel for years?
I couldn’t find anything. Hopefully it’s another Diego Rincones. Or maybe a little Columbian Cartel influence is what we need. Just kidding.
I was kidding too…Now Ismael Munguia I might need a full background check..
It looks like I’ll be attending a San Jose Giants road game in a few weeks. My confidence in doing that improved after going to the porch concert. I’m making steps towards feeling more comfortable being out with the general public.
Way cool. Props to James for attending last night.
My godson Pads fan will be at Wrigley Field for when they play Cubs start of next week.
Curt Casali’s contract 1 year 1.5 mil guaranteed and an additional 125k every month he’s on the roster ( incentive clause for sucking) up to an additional 500K Max I believe..
Bottom line I think the Giants just did not want to go into this season without a veteran backup with what happened last year with the 3 inexperienced catchers of Tromp,Heiney &Bart costing them games( probably that WC spot)and pitchers lack of confidence in them..
You’re probably right Kat and I’m sure we were all impressed with that insane catching shutout streak, but this guy’s offensive ineptitude is off the charts horrendous. It’s a mostly veteran staff and they can’t afford another black hole in the lineup if he’s gonna play every 3rd day. And as Snarkk said the other day, Bart needs to spend time with Posey while he’s still here…
I was scratching my head last night after learning of Ruff’s injury that Buster was at least not playing first last night. It seems like Kapler after getting swept at home did not have a sense of urgency to come out trying out at least field your best team in the first game in SmelLA.
@susanslusser on twitter had column with headline “Ruf on IR…” in Chron that talked a lot about Posey and planned rest. “The team is working out the schedule with Posey, who is on board with the regular rest.” Also said either Posey or Casali could play 1b, “but that isn’t in the current plans.” Wade Jr. is up and Brebbia was scheduled to pitch for Sac on Thursday, and did.
OK, hoping for a Giants win tonight against Buehler. If he’s on, that’s a tall order, assuming even with Posey in the LU on this injured squad. But if they lose 8-4 or some such, and Posey goes 2-4 with a couple of RBIs wasted, then I’m going to ask again WTF didn’t he play last night, when his bat could, could have made a difference in 4 ABs in a one run loss against an LA bullpen game. IMO, that move to not play him in game 1 was almost as stupid as Dave Roberts robotically following his iPad and pulling Price at exactly 35 pitches when he was mowing down the Giants, and the next batter, representing the third Giant out in the inning (and Price’s last hitter for the evening if he makes out), was Alex Wood, who hits MLB pitching about as well as I do. MLB games are now managed like some kind of video game…
These managers today over analyze way to much.Price cruising along at a mere 35 pitches with 2 outs and the pitcher coming up and Robert’s pulls him? Just ridiculous. And I was so happy the next guy came in and threw 9 straight balls, even though they didn’t score it just shows how stupid a manager can look by overthinking a situation that wasn’t even needed.Does 3 more pitches to strikeout Wood ruin Price for the rest of the season?
The possible plan of using Casali at first base better be nixed immediately! It has to be a joke right? You have Wade jr, Vosler, Slater, I even heard a rumor about Dickerson playing 1st ( that would not be good)
The only time Casali when he’s not getting his start catching is the bench! His position is left out!
Zaidi and Kapler both have some roots in the bums system. They’re clear-eyed about the game and the business. This “rivalry” is now mainly a fan fantasy — an entertaining one, to be sure, especially for people like me who “hate” L.A., generally — and I’m pleased that players like Bauer, uh, fan it. But the real rivalries for the baseball ops people are in the standings.
Cubs win 1-0. No juiced ball this season shows what a farce the HR numbers were the past few seasons in MLB.
Pete Alonso – 53 bombs as a rookie in 2019.
An absolute mockery of common sense…
Granted it is only the end of May, but Posey had a whole year off and time to get into baseball shape. When do you start stretching that 3 on 2 off to 4 games and 1 off. A year and 2 months to be in baseball shape, that sounds like plenty of time. Also if the Giants wait too long to use Posey more they might not make it to the playoffs so he can play every game for the playoffs.
The Logo Jerry West is 83 today. Tremendous player from college to pros, successful executive, and nonpareil master of pull up jump shot.
How many athletes have 3 epic nicknames?
I’m partial to “ZFCC”…
yeah that was good one.
Always amazed me that he and Al Attles wound up together in Warriors FO. Attles used to hound West defensively with very physical game (and when NBA itself was much more physical) when they played against each other, and it didn’t look like West much cared for it.
The Logo, and Mr. Clutch. I’m blanking out on the 3rd one.
Never even heard of it before.
This isn’t about the rivalry. It’s a about fielding the best team against a divisional foe you look to be fighting the whole way through the season.
If this is the impetus, why try to win at all in the early part of the season, Willie? The reason it matters now is BECAUSE we are playing well. If we were 10 games under .500 instead of over it, yeah, fuck it. Well, even then, why not adjust a tad to get the best team on the field regardless? It wouldn’t have killed Buster to get Wednesday off instead of Thursday. Play the series, and see where you are by the 4th game.
I don’t think we score 3 runs in the next 2 days. Which means game 4 looks like the only one we have a shot at.
Are you telling me Kapler doesn’t want to win? Try saying that to his face, or his players or coaches or Zaidi et al. Jeez, it’s one freaking game at the end of MAY, not the end of the season. Kapler has a plan, and it’s worked pretty god dang good so far hasn’t it? for the team and for Posey, no? Really surprised all of a sudden no one “trusts the process” because they lost a close one run game to best team in NL Dude, pls.
Calm down and enjoy rest of the season–it’s got 4 months to go!
I don’t think anyone really knows what’s going on with Posey. He might be hurting. A lot of others already are.
I’m saying what I’m saying. And I’ll say that to his face. He could have easily sat Posey on Wednesday and played him on Thursday. Not a big fucking deal.
It strikes me as being very tone-deaf to the standings, the reality of the schedule, and yes, a little to the rivalry. But if we are for real, we will be fighting these guys all year. No need to give one away. Early or not.
Let’s have a beer next time we both attend a game, Chuck.
I’m in
Let’s have 10…
1. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) 1B
2. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
7. Jason Vosler (L) 3B
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Anthony DeSclafani (R)
Looks like a winning lineup to me.
That LU sucks shit, we are playing the best team in the league. Let’s see a bomb from both Vos and grave Duggar to prove.me wrong!
In case y’all didn’t see this.
I’m surprised to find Greg Papa tolerable on the pre-game show. He balances his rah-rah homer obligation with some very relevant questions. His interview of Zaidi last night was not a softball farce; he threw some fastballs and Zaidi responded forthrightly. Even his bullshit pepper with Miller and Kruk just now was informative. Very surprised.
Papa knows his shit, he is annoying but he’s smart.
Nice!!!
First lead in these 4 games
Not for long
Re: Jerry West.
When I was a kid, I saw him play golf in a charity tournament in Fresno. Why he came up there, IDK.
Anyway, it was obviously off season, he was still an active player.
Perfect golf bag, perfect persimmon woods. He hit the driver a mile. He wore what looked like perfectly pleated khaki pants, and a wonderful salmon-colored sweater. I remember his look as if it were last week. Like the Zevon song, he and his hair were “perfect”, and I was stunned by his god-like persona just following him around a few holes. Laughed and smiled a lot. What a gentleman, and what a life in athletics he’s led. OK, fine if they want to replace him as “the Logo”, but he was Curry long before Curry…
I’m thinking it’s time to throw inside to some of these fuckers, way inside. Knock em down or hit em, back those fuckers off the plate.
Affeldt was on KNBR tonight basically saying “it’s time to fight”
I’d agree with that. Fire this shit up.
Starting with Fucker
That inside pitch to Fucker Lux was a good start.
I’m sticking to my thought from the last game in Arizona when I said this is dumb starting Posey and not resting him before facing the Dodgers. It’s the bad news bears they were playing not they’re dreaded rival. This is how Kapler should of played it.. Rest in that second game in Arizona, start Posey Thursday,Friday, off Saturday, and damm sure he’s playing Sunday with Gausman &Kershaw going. He still only starts 2 in a row, but he would of been more rested to start the Dodgers series instead of that final useless game against Dbacks..
Grave Duggar: .308
the haters will all be buried soon, then it will just be us.
Aaron: .305
Rose: .303
Mays: .302
Get a head start on that hof bust
Like with Sockless man, a real gem of a player right now.
GD will comeback down to earth soon, but for now I definitely want him in there more then Shredded Socks..
Gavin Sux
Oh boy descaffolding is coming down
Hooooooooooo doggies
Jeeebus descaffolding is serving meatballs
Got em.
My god that was a great tag play at the plate by Buster. He’s so damn good.
Nice play by Wade that was Taylor made ..
Wow. Descaffolding didnt fall over
Huge K on Betts.
Man Disco is playing with fire but prevails somehow..
Beware: Grave Duggar is “in the hole”…
Oh yeah.
Dig Duggar!!
YUPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.321
Duggar will be keeping Sockless planted on the bench now..
GD is gonna start getting some regular PT. This is awesome.
He’s your discovery, Dawg.
We’ll let you slide for the Gerber baby…
Wow. Pulling out the Warriors. 👍
If Vosler connects, Flavor’s 6:17 may have no equal…
Fxck. Crawfish missing shit toniggt
So is Baragar
Crawford’s looking below standards in this series. Now he’s up to 3 errors quickly, bet he gets a dayoff tomorrow like Longo tonight
Was Mays taking days off al the time at 34? Clemente? Banks? Fuck no. Weak sauce.
They had greenies, which were awesome…
They still do
Crawford’s problems have all been on balls to his right…
The un-juiced ball got Craw.
Well REAL pitchers, Marichal,Perry,Gibson,Seaver, Jenkins,Koufax,Drysdale,Ryan,Clemens etc, never came out of a game as well Chuck. These players are pussies nowadays, because of they’re huge contracts, BS analysis, specialists crap, agents that whine about pitch counts and at contract times Bitch more..
Krukow still giving that stupid pitch count ,, well 15 an inning is great. No it’s fucking not, when the cream of the top pitchers were throwing its 12-13 tops. Why? cause their right there for they’re 9 inning CG’s at 108 pitches to 117.None of this shit today give me 5-6 of 3 runs and they consider that a quality start. That would of been laughed at from the STUD pitchers ..
Buster received surgical repair in 2011 that would’ve been cybor-like six-million-dollar-man fantasy in the olden days. Then he received similarly novel repair to a badly damaged hip in 2016 that would’ve been unthinkable in the olden days. You know, Yogi’s days. Johnny’s days. Roy’s days. Oh, wait. Anyway, you’re not in Kansas anymore.
And oh wait–Buster! Buster! Buster!
Buster bomb!
Well-rested Buster hits an HR! 🙂
BUSTER!!!!!!
POWER!!!
3RUN FUCK YOU DODGERS SWING!!!
I was so wrong g about Buster. Didn’t think he’d hit 10 all year and he’s at 10 in May.
I would get Mcgee outa there right now
Please don’t pinch run for fat fuck.
Just about the most frustrating thing in baseball is a reliever walking the first batter he faces.
And McGaaah needs to trip the light fantastic off the white cliffs of Dover.
I just have a hard time (extra alcohol needed) when McGee comes into pitch..
Ok. McGaaaah lives to pitch another day
That was quick. Good for McGee.
Rogers has a gauntlet to get through.
So much for patience at the plate.
Tauchman .205
Vosler .136
Casali .111
