Yep, Another W

Arizona. These poor bastards. We get to take them to the woodshed one more time. A day time woodshed trip. Nothing more embarrassing.

And then the Phillies come to town. I’d love to know what Philly fans think of what Kap is doing with the Giants. Are they mad? Jealous? Their team is going nowhere while Kap’s has flown to the top of MLB. They have Bryce Harper. Big deal. That guy left the Nats and they won the World Series. Kap left Philly and he’s got the best record in baseball. Have Philly fans started to figure out that Harper is just a guy with nice hair who hits home runs? Lots of guys do that for signficantly less money.

Anyway, Philly coming Friday and you gotta think Kap’s had this one circled on the calendar for a while now……

San Diggity Dawg sent this to me this am from the course he was playing in SD. (NOT the Us Open!) He and I have a US open bet, I took XS and Morikawa he took Phil and Rory, for $10–highest placed finish wins. If one of them happens to win, that’s another $10.

I would say they are both a little mad, and a little puzzled.

      Snakes on the wane.

Kap has shown some growth as a manager. For one thing, he’s leaving a starting pitcher in longer if he’s doing well. Not automatically taking out the starter just because he’s going the third time through the opponent’s lineup.

  3. zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 6:29 am

A look at the standings shows the Giants up 2 games on the Dodgers and up 6 on the Padres (7 in the loss column.)

Like Flem said the other day, it’s a little early to be scoreboard watching, but we’re baseball fans. It’s what we do! lulz

  4. Lurker John said, on June 17, 2021 at 7:49 am

These guys just keep on rolling, Connor Menez’ meltdown notwithstanding. That shit was ugly.

I think Kap is just growing on the job, like zumiee said. I don’t know why it would be inconceivable to some that it might take time to learn a complex, demanding job like managing a major league baseball team. He seems like a smart dude and he’s obviously very passionate about the job, the game and this team. And I now believe that the players really like him. Boch proved how important that is. Yeah, he stunk it up in Philly but this ain’t Philly and he’s improving. What a shocker.

Mostly, Zaidi has put together an organization that is clearly on the rise and he’s given Kap a team that is getting the job done, to say the least. There ain’t no prima donna Harpers on this team, just a collection of guys who pull together and are well-matched in terms of what they can do on the field. That is patently obvious when you watch this team play. It’s hard to say it’s a fluke after 68 games.

And, most of all, the best is yet to come with all the kids on the way.

GO GIANTS! SWEEP THE SNAKES! <—alliteration, FTW.

  5. chipower9 said, on June 17, 2021 at 7:53 am

It got a little tense and the sphincter started to contract when the snakes scored five funs in whatever inning it was. But the boys “held on” for the W.

Flav said: Have Philly fans started to figure out that Harper is just a guy with nice hair who hits home runs? Lots of guys do that for significantly less money. Uh yeah, Harper has 8 or 9 and B Craw has 15.

Let’s pin that road loss record on the snakes today.

    • Lurker John said, on June 17, 2021 at 7:57 am

I think they’re going to end up regretting giving him that massive contract. Talk about an albatross. He’s obviously a good player, but I think his ego will always be an issue in the clubhouse.

      • chipower9 said, on June 17, 2021 at 8:06 am

Agree, LJ. I appreciate that he is a damned good player, but have never appreciated his attitude.SO happy the Giants did not ink his ass.

  6. willedav said, on June 17, 2021 at 7:53 am

Couple common denominators—both seasons in Philly his teams collapsed in second half. And both had awful pitching. Kap did some funny stuff last year with pitching, including Gott, who is in Sac now, thankfully.

Still over platoons imo but as Zum said, much growth over 2020. With real ST and better knowledge of who he has/what he wants them to do, and of course tremendous rebound from old guys, seems to have found his groove. And unlike Philly he’s got pitching now; hope they can stay healthy. Frank Robinson admitted pitching was toughest thing for him to figure out as mgr., being a former hitter.

Not a Harper fan either, but don’t blame him for where Phils are now, or for anything that has happened to Nats, 2019 or otherwise….they were great story taking out LA and winning it all with pitching and Rendon etc.

Great post by LJ above on Kap, Z, the team, etc. I agree 110%. I was on the bubble last year. Kap made some pretty bonehead moves last year, but has improved. Agree with LJ on him growing into the job. I also questioned the like 127 coaches on the staff. But after hearing multiple players rant and rave about the coaching staff, and what a great job the staff does on preparing the players, I have no qualms, now. Package all this with the team Z has built and continues to build, and I am definitely drinking the kool aid.

    Go Giants!

  11. Lurker John said, on June 17, 2021 at 8:17 am

Speaking of the coaches, who’s the guy with the glasses who stands next to Kap during the games? I’m sorry to say I don’t know.

And regarding the players raving about the coaches, Yaz was doing that very thing yesterday talking about his salami, saying they had been working on that exact swing earlier in the day. Longo, Crawfish and Belt have been saying similar things lately. Good stuff. Zaidi just seems to make good decisions about most everything regarding the team.

I like my Kool-Aid over ice, thank you very much.

LJ..His name is Kai Correa the bench coach who’s been so solid even Kap is emulating him now with the Clark Kent glasses 🤓. I’m just so stoked also with these hitting coaches Donny Ecker&Justin Viele along with are secret weapon Allyssa Nakken and pitching coach Andrew Bailey the former A’s ROY I had no idea he won that award. These hitting coaches are so far superior then Bochy’s last few years with the 2 headed idiots of Schu&Powell who just sat around collecting a undeserved paycheck! And same goes with Bailey who’s done a marvelous overall job molding 1 year Z projects into big time contributions..
Yes the BC needed to buy in to their modern day analytics and they certainly have with extra discipline along with everyone else, frustrating opponent pitchers, knocking them out early due to extreme pitch counts, but also raking a mistake, it’s been exciting how they have turned it around…
Let’s GO Giants and put the final touches on Arizona’s incredible run of horseshit baseball by being the team that put them in the alltime record book of 23 straight road losses and counting!!🧹🧹🧹🧹Sweep Baby!!!

    • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 9:43 am

I don’t know anything about coach Correa, but I like the visual of how engaged he looks on the job. He is right next to Kap just about always, interacting with him, and I’m guessing (because he looks kind of young) talking a lot of analytics, giving Kap food for thought during the game. I like his energy. He’s not some coach dozing on the bench.

      • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 9:44 am

None of the current Giants coaches look like they doze on the bench.

Didn’t his father pretty much solidify the “Euro-step” in the NBA? The slow-motion two steps to the basket. Other people had done it occasionally before, but he did it a lot, and so did a lot of the other arriving Euro players.
When I played in high school, a player was called for traveling usually if they did that. The U.S. refs nowadays have decided it’s OK.

    • willedav said, on June 17, 2021 at 10:40 am

Tauchman does not have options Duggar and Wade Jr. do. Kap loves to platoon, but you can only do so much on IF. Way more LH in OF. Dubon not exactly putting best foot forward lately but Thairo would seem to be only viable replacement at SS. Yes should be interesting to see who goes/stays.

      • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 10:48 am

It would be tough seeing Wade get sent down, but he would be going to Sac knowing that Z-Harris are very pleased with the job he did for the big club. His stock is high.

Doubt they play both Crawford &Posey today. They would of been pulled earlier last night if it wasn’t for ZZ top brain fart play that turned into 5 runs and he had to leave them in.Let Dubon& Casali deal with the extreme heat today..

    • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 10:43 am

There’s always something a bit unnerving about watching lefthanded Giants pitchers make that play where they have to turn 180 degrees and make the throw to first. We’re all still a little traumatized by watching Affeldt try to make that type of play.

  23. James said, on June 17, 2021 at 11:51 am

In terms of how he handles the players, Kapler seems pretty much the same as last year. The offense is producing runs in the same style and at a similar clip. He has a better rotation to work with this year. He’s gotten smoother at negotiating the press and he’s now in an organization sympathetic to his own baseball worldview, unlike Philly, where the oldsters didn’t appreciate that he had no use for their wisdom. The new mature Kap wouldn’t put it that way, but he’s almost certainly thinking it.

I couldn’t be happier with the Giants manager, no matter what their record.

    • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 12:06 pm

If he hasn’t been learning, that wouldn’t be good. He’s a person, not a robot.

      • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 12:14 pm

It’s very subjective, but my percentage of saying “Bad move by Kap” is lower this season than last season.

      • James said, on June 17, 2021 at 12:28 pm

Most bad moves are simply unlucky moves. He’s obviously learning as any good manager does in any kind of organization. I don’t think he’s learned anything about traditional baseball strategy per se. There isn’t much to learn.

      • alleykat69 said, on June 17, 2021 at 12:40 pm

Well Kap did learn from a Bullpen brainfart in Philadelphia when he called for a reliever that had not even gotten up to throw yet..

    • xoot said, on June 17, 2021 at 12:43 pm

Kapler and his coaches have established their system and (fairly to my surprise) they have many good to excellent players to coach and to manage. No wonder he looks good. No wonder the entire team and staff are enjoying themselves. Hell, no wonder we are.

There was a world champ welterweight boxer with that nickname, Jose Napoles.

Let the record show I birdied that hole! On my way to a 90, which is a little disappointing as i was at 42 after 9.
My first day of summer vacation. Now I’m at my favorite lunch spot in Ocean Beach—-which i always thought was a weird name for a beach. Kind of the hippie beach spot down here. Walking here, some guy pulled up next to me in one of those souped up golf carts and said “you walk like Mark Melancon,” which is an interesting opening line of conversation. I think he might be right though—-i think i do walk like Mark Melancon.

    • snarkk said, on June 17, 2021 at 1:06 pm

Melancon’s resurrection in Diego confirms the suspicions many of us here had when he showed up in SF with that big contract, and immediately, as in his first save try, sucked. The dude was damaged goods then, and the Giants brass blew it along with their medicos in due diligence before inking that deal. It took him 2 1/2+ seasons and getting traded for his arm to recover from whatever the hell the problem was. I think he knew as a FA that his arm was shit, and kept quiet to sign the deal. Nats probably knew or suspected. I wouldn’t mind the Giants beating his ass like a drum when the time presents itself…

      • sandog said, on June 17, 2021 at 1:08 pm

I salute you for sticking to your story, but I disagree. I think he lost his confidence in SF. Needed a change of scenery.

Maybe he discovered gorilla goo when he went to Hotlanta.
Maybe best thing would be to compare his velocity, spin rate, all those specific stats from when he came to SF, if they were recorded then, and right after he left to Braves, and this season. Someone else can do that…

      • chipower9 said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:35 pm

Giants pitchers seem again to be crap at fielding their position, based on the last month’s keystone kops fielding. I wonder if SF is typical, or is on the crap end of pitcher fielding? Do pitchers ever take fielding reps during the season? I can’t see why fielding some basic grounders and throwing to first after a bullpen session could hurt anything…

Oh Dubie. And Kruk stupidly says the problem was that he had too much time.

    • unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 2:57 pm

Not sure he woulda made that play anyway. It was hit pretty slowly.

      • xoot said, on June 17, 2021 at 2:59 pm

I think a smooth transition would’ve made it routine. Of course, the official scorer agrees with me so I well may be wrong.

  52. unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 2:56 pm

Dubious Dubon is playing his way on to the slow boat to Sacto.

    • chipower9 said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:40 pm

I don’t think he has options, plus with his versatility in the field he isn’t going anywhere.

Maybe spider tack is volatile, maybe it evaporates over two hours or so v

Holey sheet today’s the anniversary of the Barry B birthday game. My sons and I were there (mid week day) in the RCF bleachers. Ray D hit two HRs in that iirc. One flew way over our heads. Barry’s walk off was exhilarating. The park was packed to see the Giants finish a four game sweep of the D Backs. It was mid 2003, and nothing was going to stop em. Well ….

    • djloo27 said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:36 pm

      Barry’s birthday is July 24th, Xoot….

Casali got the Tromp wake-up call.

    • snarkk said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:49 pm

That, or his bad wrist, which we didn’t know about but suddenly was revealed as he went to the injury list, got better…

  56. unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:14 pm

Duggerific! Hah! Trying to get in on the lame calls here.

  57. xoot said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:14 pm

Reddick used to be a very good RF. Wtf happened.

    • unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:19 pm

I guess we now know why they call him Reddick.

A bit surprised to see Gasman out there. he had a pretty iffy inning in the 7th. One walk and he’s gone.

    • zumiee said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:19 pm

It’s the 2021 Kap vs. last season.

      • unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:30 pm

I think it even goes back to April when he pulled Gasman and the pen gagged up a few in a row.

    • Macdog said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:20 pm

I thought the same, but he got an easy 1-2-3.

  59. unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:20 pm

    Then again . . . nevermind.

There was an Athletic article yesterday confirming what I posted a few days ago about spin rate. The Giants pitchers are not doing much with it. The piece goes deeper by showing that there’s been little variance in the spin rate data from previous years for Gausman et al, while other staffs have seen big increases. If any of the SF pitchers are adding stuff to the ball, they’re very cleverly staying under the radar by not getting much apparent benefit from it.

Maybe pinching the hat brim is a psych. Umps are inspecting hats gloves unis necks now.

    6-7 hitters that would be Casali &Duggar are 6 for 7 with 4 runs scored 5RBI’s including a HR,Triple, single 3 RBI’s for Casali and a triple,2 singles and a walk for GD..Amazing it’s a new hero everyday..

  62. unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:29 pm

I thought Gallen actually looked pretty good today. Maybe it wasn’t just a terrible Arizona team.

    Amazing team.

  71. James said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:42 pm

Mike gets in a really clutch stupid comment about RBIs right before the last out!

  72. chipower9 said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:42 pm

I sure as fuck hope none of the Giants pitchers are doctoring the ball. They get caught, the penalty is stiff. 10 game suspension, and the kicker…the team CANNOT fill their spot while suspended.

    • Macdog said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:47 pm

We know Cueto’s not doing it.

      • snarkk said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:50 pm

Maybe he should try and then get caught and suspended…

  73. unca_chuck said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:44 pm

    What is that? 2 starts?

  74. alleykat69 said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:45 pm

How SWEEP it is and thank you Arizona for all Giants fan to see the the new futility record in baseball with 23 straight road losses..As the 62 Mets along with Roger Craig yell out a Humm Baby atleast it’s not us anymore!!

  75. Macdog said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:46 pm

And the best part of all? Giants still have 13 games left with the D-Backs.

    • snarkk said, on June 17, 2021 at 3:51 pm

That is a very nice stat…
