A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Sticking It To The Halos

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 23, 2021

Disco is now firmly entrenched as our #2. Another great performance by him. Bank those W’s.

I know it’s not going to happen, but what about The Grave Duggar getting some of these Slater starts? I know that scares Kap because he give up a little of his match up leverage but it does seem that while still an outstanding Stanford man he might not be quite what we’re looking for when it comes to a reliable lead off hitter. Just something to consider.

I know I’ve touted him before but if you aren’t following JomBoy on twitter you should start. This is a great breakdown by him:

Also I’ve already grown quite tired of these pitchers who act like they can’t believe they’re getting checked. The whole reason it has gotten to this point is because of them–they were all cheating. Stop putting on this stupid public display like you can’t imagine why this is happening…..

  8. Flavor said, on June 23, 2021 at 5:52 pm

This might be one of my favorite games of all time

  9. snarkk said, on June 23, 2021 at 5:52 pm

I just dropped into this game.
    Sounds like a crazy one.
Tauchman with 5 Ks, then an HR blast.
I guess that output keeps him on the squad.
    What do you call a 5K game — a Homburg, a chapeau, a beanie?…

  10. Flavor said, on June 23, 2021 at 5:52 pm

My car battery actually died while I was listening to the game in the driveway. To preserve superstition I brought my laptop out here while I’m recharging it and I watched the rest of this game with my laptop in my car

I just don’t know what to make of this guy.A hit a month a couple of great game saving catches!
That will extend his stay longer after being embalmed but rises out of a Duggar coffin again..

My god this game could of been a Twilight Zone episode.I still can’t believe what I saw!!
But a wins a win and they preserved in the strangest game of the year!!

  19. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:19 pm

It turned out great for the Giants to have an off-day tomorrow.

    • djloo27 said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:20 pm

      Yup. Good call, Zum…

  20. unca_chuck said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:20 pm

Gints struck out a whopping 19 times today. Dubious and the Taxman both 5 times. Dubon seems to be getting dumber the more he plays. Swinging at a ball that was 2′ inside and ball 4 to meekly pop out. In extras.

Wade is already paddling downriver to the bay as we speak. Belt gets hurt yet again. MRI on his right knee tomorrow.

  21. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:44 pm

This was the first game where it seemed like the Giants especially missed Longoria. He’ll be back to help at some point.

    • xoot said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:51 pm

You mean this was a game where the Giants clearly did not want Dubious Dubie taking 6 ABs? I’ll agree with that.

      • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:56 pm

Dubon is still so raw. They’d probably like to send him to AAA, but they want his versatility on defense.

      • xoot said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:00 pm

raw turns rotten if it doesn’t cure

  22. James said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:45 pm

If the Pads sweep, SF has a 4 game lead on 6/23. Incredible.

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:49 pm

That game is on ESPN tonight, which is cool.

  23. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:47 pm

La Stella could eventually be a help, too. It’s getting hard for me to remember La Stella even playing for the Giants this season.

  24. snarkk said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:49 pm

Belt will be out for some time, hopefully not super serious. The dude just can’t keep healthy.
Wade probably already packing his bags to come back to SF for Friday, he’ll be at 1B…

  25. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 6:54 pm

Snow was pretty negative and kind of ignorant about analytics. I’ll bet James was diggin’ Snow talking about the huge importance of the clutch-hitting batting average. 🙂

    • James said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:13 pm

Snow and Kruk, following Morgan, all SABR dream players in their own way, stupid as a Dubon AB as announcers.

      • xoot said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:25 pm

Morgan’s convulsive aversion to sabr insight was regrettable. But I liked him with Jon Miller as announcer. He also was very kind to my nine-year-old son who presented him with a dirty LL ball to autograph.

      • James said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:42 pm

An amazing player and I don’t doubt, a good mensch, too.

  26. Flavor said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:00 pm

A game like today, that’s a game that’s a sign that weird good shit is going to happen this year. Nothing else explains a game like today…….

  27. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:06 pm

Snow did have a good quote near the end of the game:
“I saw some stuff today I’ve never seen.”

  28. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:09 pm

    Pads/Dodgers starts on ESPN 2.

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:18 pm

Odd hearing Flem do this particular game.

  29. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:38 pm

Pads go yard a couple of times. Cronenworth is a legit good player.

    • James said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:43 pm

Yeah, that HR had nothing to do with reduced spin rate.

  30. alleykat69 said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:45 pm

Jesus Stanford just choked in the bottom of the 9th leading 5-4 with 2 outs nobody on against Vanderbilt in a elimination game, pitcher Brendan Beck was dealing but a walk a single an infield hit to tie it where both runners moved up to 2nd&3rd, then Beck airmailed one over the catchers head and they lose 6-5! Just a brutal loss as Vanderbilt moves on to play NCS Friday, and the Cardinals go home..

  31. James said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:52 pm

The current Bauer spin rate of 2500 on the 4 seamer is still over 200 above average. That’s a big gap.The idea that he’s now significantly hampered by the crackdown is pretty suspect.

    • djloo27 said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:58 pm

Is there actual proof that a higher spin rate will make a pitch break more?
      Every time?
      I have my doubts…

  32. xoot said, on June 23, 2021 at 7:57 pm

Good exchange there between Flemm and Mendoza after a check swing call. Flemm said he always has a hard time judging those calls. Mendoza laughed and agreed and said she always tries to determine where the ball would’ve gone if the batter had made contact. Flemm instantly said that’s a pretty good test. And so it is. I think these two work well together.

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:00 pm

Yeah, they’re doing a good job.
And thankfully so far no in-game interviews.

    • James said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:03 pm

If only they were both Cal progeny.

      • xoot said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:06 pm

Snodfart we’ll have with us always

  33. mrsprtdude said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:12 pm

Was at yesterday’s game! Today at work checking the gamecast on espn app. Saw fielders choice Angels win 3-2. Turned it of. 30 min later alert we win. WTF?? Guessing the umps had call reversed:)

Go Giants.. PS Donnie barrels looks lost (at least yesterday) Ohtani too. K’d swinging 3 times!

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:16 pm

Yeah, a play at the plate got reversed!

  34. snarkk said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:17 pm

    Idea.
Tauchman bats and plays only in extra inning games…

  35. djloo27 said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:43 pm

This article contains major Grave Duggar analysis.
It was written before today’s game…

    • xoot said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:56 pm

“find grass”. That new cliche chimes in so well with the OBAs etc. I buy that stuff. But fact is the guy plays like a great CF across the board: in the field, at the plate, and on the base paths. Fuck BABIP. Luck is as essential to his game as is speed, grace, and power.

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 8:57 pm

      Thanks!
It never ceases to amaze me how specific the analytics can get.
“His Sweet Spot%, his percentage of batted balls between 8 and 32 degrees, is 45.7 percent, 12.4 points above the league average. That places him fifth among all batters with at least 50 batted balls.”
Just to the eye it can be seen he’s squaring up more pitches than he used to.

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 9:03 pm

Kudos to Flappers who early on had recognized that Duggar had changed his batting stance. There wasn’t any chance I would have noticed that.

      • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 9:07 pm

The article does a good job of showing the change on video.

      • snarkk said, on June 23, 2021 at 10:27 pm

Kap’s batting guys changed Craw’s stance.
Whatever that did, and whatever other advice, he’s rejuvenated in the box.
I think the batting coaches under Bochy were “see ball, hit ball, hard”…

  36. Macdog said, on June 23, 2021 at 10:43 pm

Am I crazy to be shocked that the Angels didn’t walk Duggar in the 12th, given who was behind him in the lineup? He led off the 12th with the runner on 2nd, if the Angels walk him they get Dubon and Tauchman — we all know what both had done up to that point — and then bring in Watson to get Yaz out. Instead, Duggar ripped the double to RF and got the run in, enabling the Giants to get to the 13th and win the game.

    • zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 10:48 pm

Maddon seems pretty over-rated. No wonder the Cubs dumped him.

  37. alleykat69 said, on June 23, 2021 at 10:45 pm

Those batting coaches under Bochy’,Schu&Powell were useless since their hire.I seemed to be one of the only guys constantly ripping them for lack of motivation, and the bore core and others just turned those 2 idiots out knowing they knew nothing about hitting. They stunk and.both are probably out of the game now..

  38. zumiee said, on June 23, 2021 at 10:50 pm

The Padres kept grinding and got the win, with Melancon making things dicey at the end again.
