A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Finish The First Half Strong

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 10, 2021

Lots of bombs, lots of $$$ lost to Chris Reich on the golf course, and another win. Sorry for the short thread but I gotta get out of the house, 36 holes today, not sure if my body is ready for that.

Before Giants game I turned on mlb.tv showing Astros-Yanks. Stros were in field and pitching, and I noticed orange top unis and wondered who it was. They looked more like Giants on Friday than real Giants did.

Do you walk the course, Flavor?
Do you guzzle cold ones while you’re playing?

Flav goes big. Jumps right in for 36…

My farm report…went to see the Richmond Squirrels at the Bowie Baysox in Maryland to see Heliot. My older kid got his autograph along with Will Wilson (I did not realize that Wilson just joined Richmond) and Hjelle.

Heliot went deep in first at bat, a high shot over left center clearing 30 foot fence. He added two rbi singles and a stolen base. I was surprised they had him playing CF and he is definitely fleet footed enough to cover. He made a great play coming well past the gap in left center calling off the left fielder for a back-hander that was way over. Was impressed. Out of the 5-6 times we have seen AA ball with our farm teams in Richmond and the old CT team, Heliot is easily the best looking hitting prospect we have seen. He is stockier than what I was expecting and closest thing Incan compare him to was Christian Arroyo when we saw him but thicker than Arroyo at that time. Arroyo now seems to have put on a lot of weight. I will be shocked if he does not go to AAA soon and then up with the big club by Sept when rosters expand.

But the person that blew me away was the starter who I had never heard of Caleb Killian who they moved up to Richmond as a 24 year old Texas Tech pitcher and drafted in 2019 who was at A+ Eugene earlier this year. This was his 8th start and second complete game (last night was first game of DH) going 7. Kid has command of the plate and now has 47k on just 6 walks while in Richmond. Super impressive. Met his parents after the game as well. He was born in Anaheim and then they moved in Texas.

      Great report, GH; thanks!

      • gianthead said, on July 10, 2021 at 12:12 pm

Thanks and forgot to mention the young catcher who also seems to have just moved up, Brandon Martorano. A UNC product. He crushed one deep center 440-450 feet high off the CF net. Just his fifth game in Richmond and he gunned a base runner. Lot of catchers in the org. As a 23 year old he looks like he could play OF or 1b. Let’s see if his bat develops.

      Nice.

    • xoot said, on July 10, 2021 at 12:17 pm

GH do you have any idea why Flying Squirrel Heliot Ramos, someone we all admired during the televised ST games, tanked so badly in June? May was great; sounds like he’s back on the beam now. (Based on your fine report, btw. Thanks.)

      • gianthead said, on July 10, 2021 at 12:21 pm

Thanks Xoot. Odd but maybe just him adjusting. We all know AA pitching is probably a set above everywhere else. He has the look of an everyday player down to ignoring autograph requests but a couple of locales who are the type who sit there with all their baseball cards in binders so I made my older kid then ask again and he got it.

    • gianthead said, on July 10, 2021 at 12:17 pm

The starter Killian was hitting 96-97 and threw with ease. I yelled down to Steve Kline still the pitching coach after the game and said great job with the kid and he said he just sits back and watched and we both laughed. His parents were awesome and seems like great kid. Cool to see them travel from home in Texas to see their son.

  7. alleykat69 said, on July 10, 2021 at 12:26 pm

Farhan sure knows how to find gems 💎
In his first full draft he drafted 9 hitters and the lone pitcher he took was Caleb Kilian who looks like a complete steal. He’s 6-0 this year at 2 stops Winder’s area Keizer Salem ( Emeralds) now promoted to the Richmond Secret Squirrels where he 3-0.Kid has been lights out.
Another pitcher he drafted is Sean Murphy who was a supplementary pick to save cash so they could sign another future stud Lefty Kyle Harrison from DeLasalle (sp)Murphy and Harrison both have been sharp!
In Farhan we trust along with Holmes and there scouts! They now have the 11th rank farm system in baseball and climbing, what a quick turnaround from the abyss of Sabes/Evans towards their end though they still have some prospects from their tenure left..

MLB Draft is Sunday the Giants have the 14th pick, they have interest in OF Benny Montgomery and Pitcher Jordan Wicks among others.Roll up the sleeves and do it again Farhan and the team of scouts!!

I guess it will always amaze me.
68 degrees in SF at game-time. I live 90 miles away and it’s 102 outside right now, and is supposed to eventually get to 109.

    • zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:17 pm

The coastal mountain range isn’t all THAT high. The Altamont Pass is under a thousand feet elevation. But it’s enough to cause the difference, obviously.

      • zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:21 pm

Regarding the coastal range: “Elevations range from 500 to 2,500 ft (150 to 800 m); some peaks rise to 5,000 ft (1,500 m).”

    • willedav said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:21 pm

Hear you Zum. It’s high 80s where I am, 40 miles maybe from the O. Where Unc and Snarkk are should be 100 today.
Yesterday had aircon going for about 10 hours, even after game-Miller and Kruk had jackets on at the yard.

Parra continues to help Giants, wow.

      • zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:24 pm

    • zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:47 pm

I’ve criticized his defense, but 3b truly is a tough position. Some rockets get hit over there.

  14. djloo27 said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:47 pm

If the Grave Duggar is going down the drain and Slater continues to wallow in the low .200’s, the Giants can’t stand pat. So either bring up Heliot or trade for a a solid veteran like Michael A. Taylor…

    • willedav said, on July 10, 2021 at 2:00 pm

Funny thing is, Kap loves Slater at leadoff vs. LHP. I looked it up and coming into today he’s hitting .222, 22 for 90. OB is .333 from that spot in order.
GD never hits leadoff, usually 6th or 7th despite much higher BA and OB. but yes struggling again right how, 1-20. BABIP gods taking back some turf too-think last 10 times he’s put ball in play, 1 hit (line drive offf waino).

  15. snarkk said, on July 10, 2021 at 1:47 pm

    I like the early scoring.
    Always a plus.
Thanks to Parra for the gift error drop in LF.
If I were fast and could handle the bat, I’d drop a damn bunt down every time, preferably to Leister’s left side (from the mound). Doesn’t need to be perfect. He won’t throw to first, he’s got the Sax disease. Automatic hits. Then, I’d take huge lead from first, and steal on him. He won’t throw over to first, either. Duggar should be doing that, since Kruk says he knows how to bunt for hits…

  16. djloo27 said, on July 10, 2021 at 2:07 pm

    Baseball is a funny game.

Today, some shots yes, but mixed in with a bunch of dinks and dunks…

  28. snarkk said, on July 10, 2021 at 2:18 pm

Slater steals on Lester, EZ PZ.
Nats management hanging him out to dry, driving up the career ERA.
This is getting embarrassing — a kind of a game where it’s a career ender or a DFA trigger, or an IL trigger at least…

    • Winder said, on July 10, 2021 at 2:35 pm

You are right about that. They should have pulled him after about 30 pitches.

He should probably take a day off tomorrow, or even late game today; relax for the AS game…

    • djloo27 said, on July 10, 2021 at 2:56 pm

Is Crawford’s great year because of all the new hitting instructors?
If it is, he must be wondering about the advice he’d been getting all these years…

      • snarkk said, on July 10, 2021 at 2:59 pm

I’ve heard local media say he is giving them credit.
He’s made swing and stance adjustments per their advice; I don’t know what they are.
He just seems to barrel up a lot more balls than before, and when he does, he clobbers them.
Apparently they offer more than “see ball, hit ball”…

      • djloo27 said, on July 10, 2021 at 3:03 pm

Zumie: On the coastal mountains, drive south on one and you’ll see the weather change at Pigeon Point just because the range gets closer to the coast there. Sometimes the line of demarcation is visible above as a sky of overcast clouds ending at that exact latitudinal line. Ran into something even more dramatic while sailing up the Mendocino coast one spring.

  38. xoot said, on July 10, 2021 at 3:45 pm

Tyler’s restrung elbow has some strength. 97 mph fastball. Not much command though. So far.

  39. zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 3:48 pm

That 2014 MLB draft was pretty weak overall. The Giants drafted Beede instead of Matt Chapman or Alex Verdugo, though, which looks bad in retrospect.

    • zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 3:58 pm

Schwarber and Trea Turner were drafted ahead of Beede, and that’s about all.

      • zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 4:02 pm

Brady Aiken was the first pick in that draft.

  40. xoot said, on July 10, 2021 at 3:53 pm

Bart’s D is better, but from that knee flat down stance he can’t move latitudinally to block a ball in the dirt. ;).

  41. snarkk said, on July 10, 2021 at 3:56 pm

Maybe the pitching coaches saw enough to give him something to work on.
But, given a perfect scenario with no pressure for his first time back, Beede just punched his ticket back to Sac.
Maybe he was pumped, but looks like still pitching with a $100 arm and a 10 cent brain…

The Grave Duggar is completely lost…

    • snarkk said, on July 10, 2021 at 4:24 pm

That’s the issue for guys like him and Slater, isn’t it?
They have too many streaks of good to very good hitting, then just totally lost.
They’re OK defensively, Duggar is very good, but the hitting inconsistencies are tough to swallow.
That the Gmen can be doing so well with that going on in the OF is amazing to me…

  45. mrsprtdude said, on July 10, 2021 at 4:25 pm

Listening to Fleming on radio..(via computer). Nats sent pitcher up down 6. In todays baseball not a huge lead. “No greater example of throwing up the white flag then sending the pitcher up here”..

  46. xoot said, on July 10, 2021 at 4:28 pm

Miller and Kruk got something going there. I would tune in to see a Flo and Ruf talking baseball segment. Sixty seconds of hilarity.

  47. zumiee said, on July 10, 2021 at 4:33 pm

A weakness in Krukow’s broadcasting is he doesn’t know a huge amount about hitting. If a player is slumping at the plate, Krukow rarely can get into specifics about what’s happening with the batter.

    • snarkk said, on July 10, 2021 at 4:40 pm

With sacks loaded one out, Turner hits foul pop that 1b goes over for right by the net, and drops.
Next pitch Turner hits a grand slam, and it’s 9-0 top 2nd. Unreal

I feel his pain. Had ACL replacement/rebuild on left knee in SF back in ’97. On the shelf for nearly a year. Eek.

That is too bad Acuna is one of the real stars in the game.

Tough break for Acuna. One of the most exciting players. Tatis and Soto maybe the only better/ more exciting young players to watch.

Rox Gonzalo Marquez threw 7 shutout innings at Pads last night and they won 3-0. Pads now 5 back, and closer to being out of the playoffs (4.5 ahead of Reds for WC) than they are to Giants.

Giants will have the best record in baseball going into the A/S break, I’m still in awe of what they have accomplished.I hope and really demand the media in baseball gives this team their just do and talk about a team that was never supposed to be contending let alone in 1st place! Giants Baseball ⚾️ nothing better!
