A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

First Half Champion

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 11, 2021

Here we are, guaranteed to be in first place at the break. This is still blowing me away. Regardless of how the season shakes out we have been given a gift this year. Appreciate it.

Gausman vs the underwhelming Fedde. We have unfinished business with that guy.

Sun River today. Catch you guys later.

Kat said Kimbrel, who is getting lot of attention. So what does it take to acquire him from Cubs?

  2. zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:53 pm

Giants take a right-handed starting pitcher from Mississippi St.

    • zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:56 pm

      Will Bednar.
I don’t follow college baseball at all, but the video clips show him blowing away batters at the college World Series.

How about the guy who led the majors in appearances last season?
    Scott Barlow – KC Royals
I bet we could get him and Michael Taylor for nothing too upsetting…

    • willedav said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:22 pm

Taylor is same guy who played for Nats? Something I’m missing in the numbers?

      • djloo27 said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:37 pm

Just a hunch, but always liked him…

    • willedav said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:02 pm

      Barlow certainly interesting.

  4. xoot said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:56 pm

    A power pitcher with promise

    • zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:15 pm

      Looks like a good pick.
Khalil Watson taken by the Marlins two picks later looks intriguing, but he’s a shortstop and the Giants already have Luciano in their system.

  5. willedav said, on July 11, 2021 at 5:57 pm

    Thanks James for that list.
Of those on list not playing for contenders, Iglesias is only one who stands out to me. Does have 3 Ls and 3 blown saves this season.

    • James said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:10 pm

Assuming failure’s in the cards, the primary reason I see to get a closer from elsewhere is to watch him fuck up instead of McGee or Rogers, both of whom have made very nice contributions to the Giants’ season.

      There’s no Mariano Rivera in that list . . . .

      • snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:29 pm

Rivera is a once in 50 year player.
A closer with 2 effective pitches would be nice…

      • James said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:44 pm

19 saves, two screw ups for McGee. That is excellent by any measure. He’s due for another BS soon, just like Rogers is ready for his once in every 12 games failure. The Giants bullpen has been very good overall. Improving it – or any other part of the team – is always a good thing

      • xoot said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:53 pm

The Giants have managed 8 and 9 really well. Some of the other RPs have shined lately, Leone mainly. But others. They need to add a good arm to that corps, someone who can roar into late innings. A closer ? Maybe one of two. Or three. Kimbrel ain’t that guy.

      • Flavor said, on July 11, 2021 at 8:06 pm

maybe there’s no Mariano but it’s terribly shortsighted to think McGee is going to keep chugging along here as he blows past his innings pitched last year. And, it fact, he’s on pace to blow past his all time innings pitched in a year. Throw in the post season and that is asking for trouble.

      • James said, on July 11, 2021 at 11:15 pm

McGee does seem to lose velocity when his innings are bunched together. He’s on pace to throw 71 innings, which would match his 2014 season.

What a day for the NY teams…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:39 pm

      Did Well Loo.
Kumar Rocker is a steal falling to the Mets at 10.
And what a baseball name , already will play in New York for sure.

      • djloo27 said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:34 pm

Did you see how both teams lost today?
Kind of incredible – especially Yanks…

  7. alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:23 pm

Wow what a buildup to the SF Giants pick a real tearjerker moment when this young man Logan Howard who suffered stroke at the age of 13 and and with determination and faith was able to comeback and pitch for his high school senior year! (avid Giants fan)
Then he goes and shakes hands with Will Clark’s before taking the podium (overwhelmed with emotions)to announce the Giants selection of Mississippi St RHP Will Bader,, voted the college W/S MVP and of course from Clark’s alma mater.Perfect Another Will digging the pick.
And to Logan Howard, going off the stage to a standing ovation chant of Logan,Logan,Logan I tip my Giants cap to you great job!! Best part of the draft easily!

    • djloo27 said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:30 pm

      Absolutely, Kat.
If that didn’t move you, it’s time to resign from the human race…

  8. snarkk said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:24 pm

Apparently, a handful of AS players not showing up to play the game.
    So, why should fans?…

    • xoot said, on July 11, 2021 at 6:45 pm

Ohtani. Derby and game as batter and pitcher. I’ll have to check my calendar.

  9. zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:02 pm

The A’s drafted a guy from Southern Calif. named Max Muncy. That’s someone the Giants just could not have drafted, IMO.

  10. Winder said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:23 pm

Makes me happy when we draft pitchers in the first few rounds. Hope Bednar pans out he looks like a pretty good gamble that he will.

  11. Macdog said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:24 pm

Will Bodnar’s brother David is a pitcher for the Pirates, he got the win in relief today vs. Mets.

    • Macdog said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:26 pm

      Bednar, damn auto-correct.

    • zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:40 pm

      Thanks! Interesting to know.

  12. alleykat69 said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:27 pm

Yeah crazy another Max Muncy heading to the bigs eventually.
More crazy the A’s originally drafted the ass wipe Max Muncy as well!
And the craziness still doesn’t end, both Muncy’s share the same birthday Aug 25 WTF?
I’m thinking there some alien abduction plot going on and there part of the 4400 club tv series coming back to earth after years missing!

    • zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:43 pm

Yeah, that name goes into the history of Dodger villains.
Of course Tommy Lasorda heads the list.

  13. zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 7:50 pm

I gotta give the draft audience a lot of credit for their continual booing of Manfred. They are fully committed to it.

  14. unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2021 at 8:26 pm

If they are trying to generate interest in the draft, hold it on a day when games aren’t being played. Like tomorrow? Madfred is an idiot.

  15. unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2021 at 8:27 pm

Hugee fave of mine whenever the hell it came out.

    • zumiee said, on July 11, 2021 at 9:20 pm

It’s interesting to compare it to Springsteen’s original. Manfred and band found the melodic essence of the song and stripped the song down and built it back up. It’s brilliant and I’m sure Bruce was thrilled at what Mann and his band had done with the song.
      Bruce’s version:

      • Macdog said, on July 11, 2021 at 10:19 pm

Bruce probably liked this version because it was a #1 song in the U.S.! Or maybe not. From Wiki:

I don’t think Springsteen liked our Blinded By The Light, ‘cos we sang ‘wrapped up like a douche’, and it wasn’t written like that and I screwed it up completely. It sounded like ‘douche’ instead of ‘deuce’, ‘cos of the technical process – a faulty azimuth due to tape-head angles, and it meant we couldn’t remix it.

Warners in America said, ‘You’ve got to change ‘douche’, ‘cos the Southern Bible belt radio stations think it’s about a vaginal douche, and they have problems with body parts down there.’ We tried to change it to ‘deuce’ but then the rest of the track sounded horrible, so we had to leave it. We just said, ‘If it’s not a hit, it’s not.’

But in the end, it was No.1 in America, and so many people came up to us after and said, ‘You know why it made No. 1?… Everyone was talking about whether it was deuce or douche.’ Apparently Springsteen thought we’d done it deliberately, which we hadn’t, so if I ever saw him I’d avoid him and cringe away like a frightened little boy.

        — Manfred Mann, Record Collector interview (August 2006),

      • unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2021 at 11:37 pm

        Springsteen’s version is

        Cut loose like a deuce

        Mms is

        Wrapped up like a deuce

Mm does sounds like he’s saying douche

  16. unca_chuck said, on July 11, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Same with Spirits in the Night. Like Manfred Mann’s versions. But the sax by Clarence Clemons is bad ass.

  17. mrsprtdude said, on July 11, 2021 at 11:02 pm

Love blinded by the light. Both versions. Always have. When I heard one I always wanted to here the other. Pre internet we always wondered what they were saying. Intrigued. magic. The best part of music.

I can see adding depth to pen, like Sabes did in 2010 to help solidify roles and limit overuse. Do believe it will be more along lines like say Hudson that worked for Nats yesterday, than anyone big and exciting. Just more of how Z/H roll with low key additions/coaching staff, which has worked damn well so far, no?

Relief set up worked nicely yesterday and bailed out Gausman after 6 solid; it already is dominant, enough just like rest of team and will be even better defensively at the least once Belt Longoria and Posey get back in the lineup.

giants actually gained ground this weekend while Dogs were hosting awful DBax and got revenge for couple bad
games they played vs. Nats back there in 4 game series. Clearly showed difference btw good team with good pitching vs team without same that made way too many mistakes in field and on bases.
