The Baseball Surprise of Our Lifetime
By any measure that first half was the most surprising in SF Giants history. I guess you could point to ’78 but that was a long time ago and there’s no way that team was more surprising that this one. We have the best record in MLB. Unreal, unbelievable…..
I’m excited for this Bomb Derby. I know they use juiced balls, I don’t care. Ohtani is a deserving favorite. But I’m surprise Perez is lower odds than Soto. Mancini winning, while improbable, would be the best Bomb Derby story of all time.
Someone will get hot and run away with it. I’ll take Ohtani even though it’s such an obvious pick. He has the biggest longest swing I’ve ever seen. +380 might end up looking like a gift.

Crazy first half. I cannot remember any Giants-related year that has surprised me as much as this club.
With all the injuries, etc. it is just incredible.
Per a recent article by Baggs in the Athletic, Giants took first place in the West on April 26th. They reclaimed first place on May 31st, and have not given it up. Lots of good stories on this club, but IMO, Craw is the first-half MVP for this team.
The rest of July is going to be challenging. In St. Louis for three, the latrine for four, home against the Bucs and then the only day off for rest of the month. Then we bring in the bums and Stros to finish out the month.
My money is on Otani-san for the HR derby.
Craw has just been amazing. It looks like he’s reinvented himself and should be resigned. I was a strong proponent of dumping all the bore core but they are not so boring this year. It’s a good problem to have.
Agree. Two and an option?
Yeah, I don’t see em doing anymore than 2. He will probably take the local discount also.
I’ve been on Crawford for years about being overweight.
And now at his age and in a contract year he’s suddenly gonna go 30/100/.285?
If he wasn’t our guy, we’d be screaming PEDS…
It’s like Adrian Beltre 2004…

Contract year being the key phrase. I’m sure that had something to do with Posey’s decision to sit out last season.
He gets re-upped AND a new deal in a heartbeat barring a complete breakdown.
um, while turning his back on $7-8 mil he could have got paid for short season last year lest we forget. I don’t think even he thought he would have this good a season, let alone anyone else.
I’m not a big HR derby fan. The MLB Network really over-hypes it. To me, it all gets kind of tedious pretty quickly.
For something to fill the Monday of the All Star game schedule, though, it fulfills a purpose.
Berman adds to the agony, but in fairness it’s an awful announcing assignment…
was it Cespedes who messed up his wrist trying to win? Coors is the right place for the contest, though, isn’t it? What the hell.
I became a Giants fan in 78. I guess that was a long time ago. Stix called again last night. We actually talked about becoming fans. His time was 1954 — hell of a year. His connection had something to do with a relative, cousin or aunt or something, who was married to the Giants catcher.
Stix has been socializing, attending country bashes in his finest clothes, with his best walking staff, and making friends. Seems that many locals sympathize with his anti-government notoriety. A few younger guys have offered to help him with heavy lifting. He still has a lot of that to do, but he’s in great spirit. He was, of course, delighted to hear more about this astonishing first half. I still think he’ll be back on line before the PS.
That’s great to hear, Xoot.
The entire episode could have ended tragically in many different ways.
Any chance of getting a picture of Stix out on the town?
I’ll mention it to him. He’s particularly proud of the raven’s feather in his cap. Maybe someone can snap a pic that he can send on when his hotrod computer fires up again. Wes Westrum was the catcher, btw. Grew up close to where Stix lives now.
I remember having this unusual card…
“Ollie ollie oxen, free!”
“Now ya know why we call you ‘blew,’ blue!”
Looks like Giants are going to do a good amount better than my 77 wins projection, which I thought at the time was optimistic…
And you were on the high side! I had 80. Someone else had 85 I think.
That would be me Chuck. And that could very well be ‘light’!
I grow more confident by the day that they will reach my prediction of 72.
Good to hear Stix is doing well. I need to give him a shout and have a chat with him. Will call him this evening.
Like snarkk, I think the Giants are going to shatter my win projection (I think I estimated 79 and that was being very optimistic).
7 of the first 13 games coming out of the break are against the Dodgers. Then 3 against the Stros.
I guess we’ll have a pretty good sense of where we stand as a team after that stretch.
Pirates sandwiched in, but still . . . things may look different at the trade deadline.
Rogers has worked 43 innings so far 2021, 15 more than all last season.
In those extra 15, he has given up 6 more hits and 1 more walk than last year. 2 bombs all season.
11 innings total in June he gave up 8 hits 1 BB 8 Ks 1 run. 1 run entire month.
Btw June game he gave up that run and STL series he went 9 1/3 scoreless, 5 hits 1 BB. Now he gets full week off to rest and recover.
Vs last year he has lowered hits BBs allowed, less hard contact fewer line drives and more groundballs. Again, having Belt and Longoria in there on D as opposed to Wilmet and Wade Jr wouldn’t hurt.
That would be me Chuck. And that could very well be ‘light’!
USA U-19 won b-ball tournament over France by a basket. One of stars was Kenny Lofton Jr. of Louisiana Tech. Jr. looks like nothing like dad —6-7 275. Really liked Kenny Lofton, too bad he didn’t play more for SF. And he could play b-ball too, as he did at Arizona, where he enrolled on basketball scholarship first.
I love what we did in the draft. 9 pitchers total one a HS kid from serra and one OF. We are gonna be stocked.
Mikulski sounds just as good as Bednar.
As I said earlier this year, Hunter will replace either Kruk or Kuip, and he may be good.
Looking forward to Lexy updates…
As long she gets left out picture, good luck to his new career.
You guys are sexist mofos.
Just dis-lexyists.
and you’re a fucking apologist! damn
This intro is like one of those new dangled quiz shows no one with any sense watches for more than two minutes.
Aussie starting 5: Mills Baynes Ingles Della and C Jock Landale from St. Mary’s.
Draymond starting for US. Durant Dame Jerami Grant and Beal. Interesting.
Adebayo LaVine Tatum Keldon Johnson. Opening L there to Nigeria might have been worst thing that ever happened to competition. Booker Middleton and another player still to join team.
Jrue Holiday.
Dante Exum and Matisse Thybulle from UW on “boomers” for Australia.
Waiting for Loo’s annual rant about the kids in the outfield.
I stopped doing it a year or two ago, Mac.
It still amazes me no end.
These inept tykes are sitting ducks for a 110 MPH line drive.
Would you let your daughter out there?
Hell yeah, looks like fun!
Darius Garland on USA team, son of Winston Garland who played few years for Warriors, cool player from Missouri St.
Coach for Winston Garland was longtime guy Charlie Spoonhour , who shows up in coaching books I have for defensive drills. Later coached at St. Louis U and UNLV.
Hometown boy Trevor Story eliminates Joey Gallo
20-19 in rd1
I guess they took the pitching needs in the draft pretty seriously…lol!
Yeah GH..After Zman drafted a shitload of hitters in his previous draft.
He went all in on pitchers so far 9 out of 10 in this one with only 1 outfielder.
Atleast he didn’t draft another catcher.
Wow an unbelievable round by defending champion Pete Alonso with 35 HR’s!!
You can forget about Salvador Perez moving on, he just goes wiped out before he batted..
Wow.No Berman? They are firing off a shit ton of pitches. This is different anyway,
Line drive contest?
Down goes Ohtani.Glad Soto saved all his homers for this instead of our games.
Wow what an epic round as Juan Soto beats Othani after 2 tiebreakers coming down to 3 swings only and Soto hit all 3 out as Othani popped up on his 1st to be eliminated.Ends up 31-28
I’m liking Pete Alonso to defend his title, he’s made for this event..
Did everyone see that?
Oh no, it finally happened!
Hope it gets the attention it deserves…
Lawsuit at 11:00.
The parents no doubt signed releases. Who knows. Why don’t they have more adults with gloves roaming around there, too?
Did a tyke get clocked?
He’ll probably walk again eventually…
Well Nats got something right–took Darren Baker in 10th round. Good luck to him.
I was hoping we would have snagged him. It would’ve been a feel good story.
2021 draft- 14 pitchers, 6 position players, 4 HS kids. I figure if 4/5 can make it to the majors for an extended time it will be a success.
