Damn. That one hurt.
In defense of “we don’t have a closer,” the team leads the majors in saves (McGee 19 and Rogers 10). It has worked.
I think a starter is the most important piece to add. A bat (Bryant anyone) would be next. I am just not sure there will be a lot of closer options at the deadline.
Z’s draft for the Dodgers in 2016 was ridiculously strong. In that draft they got Smith, Lux, May, and Gonsolin.
How about Kimbrel? I understand he’s being shopped.
It becomes a question of how much the Giants should give up to get him. It’s tempting to give away high prospects at times like these. But should they do it?
With a chance to win a World Series? I’d be giving it some serious consideration.
Losses like last night absolutely cannot happen. I like Rogers and appreciate what he’s done for the team, but he’s a high-contact pitcher who has no business being the regular closer. He’s just not cut out for it. And McGee basically throws one pitch. It’s a good pitch, but he’s better suited to a set-up role if you ask me.
They can’t mortgage the future, but right now they’re in position to go all the way. Choking away games to the goddamned Dog-pile should be a wake up call. That said, I’ve no doubt Zaidi is on it. I’m also pretty sure we’re all pretty frustrated right now. This is shaping up to be 3 of 4 series for LA now. That’s a sharp turnaround from entering the 9th yesterday.
And Bryant would be great, but I’d guess the price for him would be too high. And he’s what, 30 now?
Bryant is 29. I am sure the Giants will kick the tires. But no way I mortgage the future for any player. I don’t expect Z to empty the prospect cover to address the team’s needs. Everything I have read is that their priority will be a starter.
Moranta has began a rehab. I suspect he will get a lot of late-inning work when he is ready.
This would all be so much easier if the Giants had just played to expectations this year. lol Now that they’re in it they have to do what’s necessary to stay in it.
Not to the point of dealing prospects like Ramos, Luciano, Bishop, etc.
I wouldn’t expect the Giants to outbid anyone for the bigger names at the TD.
It’s not their style – they’re dumpster divers extraordinaire.

Frankly, I’m anything but sold on Bart, at the plate or behind it. I’d deal him in a New York minute if the right trade comes along.
Tauchman went for 3Ks last night.
Now at .176, with K rate of just over 30% coupled with a horrid SLG of .284 …

Yeah, Z-Harris need to swallow a little pride on that and just admit it’s not working out and dump him.
Brebbia too, the real culprit in last night’s collapse. He has absolutely stunk of late, giving up runs in 3 of his 4 appearances and 4 of his last 6, and giving up at least 2 hits in all six of those appearances. He shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a game the Giants have a chance to win, especially against the Dodgers.
Kruk this morning on KNBR went with his usual “mechanics” route on Brebbia.
But, he essentially agreed in not so many words that Brebbia should not be allowed into any situation that’s not a blowout…
that let them back in it. Seen lot of discussion over what LJ brought up, that as more pitch to contact guy with fewer Ks Rogers not suited for closer role. Kap went with McGee I think due to L/R matchups in 8th; turns out R on R is what ultimately did them in.
As for Tauchman, would Dubon be an improvement? Does give Kap another option in SS/CF.

I would trade Bart and Helige (sp) and a lower prospect around 15-20 in a NY minute for Kimberl he’s a legit closer,last night proved it to me going forward, u need a top end closer period.I don’t get management’s position when they’re in a better spot financially then many teams with a tons of money coming off the books next year and a top 10 draft farm and they have said that they will stretch out payroll if necessary well it’s necessary.
And they need an OF bat ( hell maybe Gallo he would be cheaper than Bryant major pop and a great defender but weaker bat)this 4 man consistent dog shit of Tauchman,Duggar,Slater&Dickerson is getting ridiculous even Ruf though he can hit he’s a liability along with Dick in the field.So 2 that can’t field,(Dick&Ruf) 3 that can’t hit and Dick following close there to now..
If you don’t get Bryant perfect fit are Gallo at least get Ramos up here stat after a short time in Sac.
Which is worse, SF has a disappointing run in playoffs after dealing prospects for a big name or achieve the same result while staying pat or making a small low cost move or two? Z knows that every team’s likely fate is failure, no matter who you have on your roster. If they do make a big move, it’s probably going to be for someone they can keep in 2022, at the very least.
The Cardinal’s Reyes finally blew a save. What a preposterous run he’s been on. There have probably been few stretches of such sustained wildness that have resulted in so little damage.
There’s now no closer without a blown save, and Ian Kennedy of the Rangers, with one blown save, is the only one without a loss. There’s no easy way to correlate blown saves to last inning losses, but among all the closers, there’s only Josh Hader (or maybe Ryan Pressly) who might provide the kind of guarantee everyone’s looking for.
Losses do have a way of being very clarifying. It’s crystal clear the need for a legit closer.
With the Giants, it seems like that’s been a need for about seven years.
What’s the definition of a legit closer? Someone the majority of fans are puzzled by instead of apoplectic about when he fucks up? Someone like Sergio Romo, but only in 2012?
To me a legit closer is someone who has command of at least 3 pitches. I guess everyone can hit a fastball so a fireballer isn’t enough for consistency anymore.
To me it would be someone who can strike-out their way out of trouble. Not a pitch-to-contact guy. Wilson, Romo, and Castillo could do that in their prime years.
All closers blow saves, so it’s a question of finding someone who can get on hot streaks for long stretches. Someone who puts dread into an opponent’s mind.
It’s always disappointing to me when a pro athlete on my favorite team can’t perform better than I could have done. I could have walked two guys in a row and given up an HR to the third guy. I really could have done that.
I could have struck out three times, like Tauchman.
This season is found money to me. I’d hate to see them chase their tails into the playoffs by dealing young talent. Get some cheap pen help and maybe a bat. But I wouldn’t deal Bart or anyone of note.
I also don’t think we should give up our top prospects. Like a lot of people here I have started to believe that Z knows what he’s doing. However, the way we’ve been playing it’s hard not to think we will chase after a couple of that can help. So far it’s been real sweet being kept on the edge of you seat with these games, last night not included.
