Can’t Beat Them

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 25, 2021

Every year there is a team we can’t beat. This season it is the Pirates. Makes no sense. Just looking forward to good riddence and not having to play them again. I’m sure they’ll light up Wood. Let’s just get this over with already.

If someone who didn’t follow baseball closely had been watching last 2 games with you, and you told them one team was in first place and the other was in last, they’d probably say, “Yeah I can see that. One team hits pitches and fields well, and the other doesn’t.”

  2. Winder said, on July 25, 2021 at 7:42 am

Hopefully getting spanked by the Pirates won’t derail the team attitude in any way. Every team goes through times like this.

  3. alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2021 at 8:22 am

Agree Winder and this team was never suppose to be in this spot in the first place. So what’s there longest losing streak of the season like just 4? Going into this season I had them at 74 wins and that was pushing the envelope I felt, and that would of seen a hell of lot of 8-9 games losing streaks easily.I’m not sweating this stupid Pirates series letdown, just waiting to rekick the Dogpile’s Asses coming up and to see what tinkering the mastermind wizard Z pulls off at the trade deadline..In Farhan we trust!!

    • Winder said, on July 25, 2021 at 8:46 am

Pretty sure I had em at 74 wins also. Yeah, I have had more fun with this season than i ever expected. I still don’t have a clue what we are gonna do at the deadline.

In Jerry Kramer’s great book, Instant Replay, about playing for the Green Bay Packers in the 1960s, there’s a moment in the book where he says that it’s impossible for NFL players to be emotionally up for every game. They’re only human, and they’re going to be emotionally flat sometimes. It’s frustrating to fans, but that’s just the way it is.
It was probably predictable the Giants would be flat after that incredible series vs. the Dodgers, and with another Dodgers series coming up real soon.

  5. zumiee said, on July 25, 2021 at 8:57 am

Before the first game of this series Greg Papa asked Kontos in the pregame show if there was a danger of the Giants being flat and Kontos said “No, they’re professionals, and they know how to get prepared for each game,” or something like that. The fans knew the danger was there, but Kontos didn’t? If he’s not going to be honest about stuff like that, there’s no point in having him on the pregame show.

  6. zumiee said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:11 am

    Speaking of flat…..
    Olympics spoiler alert!
The….oh never mind. I won’t giveaway the results. It’s on TV replay later today.

    • djloo27 said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:29 am

You have to be super careful and a little lucky to avoid results these days.
So many different ways to accidently see or hear it.
A text from a friend might be the most hazardous if it involves your favorite team.
Your buddies don’t know you DVRed a game to watch later on…

Last night on post game Kruk was talking with someone else and they thought the let down would have been Friday’s game. I have yet to see this team let losses bother them, they seem to bounce back really well. I think they win today.

  8. willedav said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:25 am

Zum, unfortunate that politics of Kerr and Pop will come into this-I still see this noise in SF Chron over Kerr. Chron writer Ann Killion is in Japan and after first L by womens soccer team vs. Sweden majority of comments in Chron were “good” and serves them right for hating on America etc.
So called patriots hoping their own county loses, yikes.

  9. willedav said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:30 am

Recent run of success at plate by GD might involve him as trade chip. BA is up to .285, OB at .350 OPS .840 one of better (top 6 I think) marks on team.
I’ve seen ton of trade proposals by Giants fans, and almost all of them involve Dubon Dickerson yada yada. I mean if that is who you are giving up, then who do you realistically hope to get back?
Z/H plan for this season has been exclusively acquiring under radar guys, and honestly I don’t expect that to change in the next week. It will be interesting to see who SF looks to extend, and who they non tender or low ball in arb like Solano.

this reminds me of Loo’s classic line in ST when he asked Daniel:

Is there any buzz about the Grave Duggar in St. Louis?
      He’s a Cardinal type of player…

LOL. Anyway, nobody had heard of Grave Duggar then and I doubt anyone wants to trade for him now. He’s a valuable piece to our team, not sure he’d be wanted elsewhere.

      • willedav said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:41 am

He’s still only a platoon guy, and how Kap uses him, batting 8th Friday, says it all. Fits what Kap likes to do, but doesn’t seem like everyday guy; 2021 might be ceiling if used sparingly enough. Could see him as toss in to part of deal for someone else they are interested in.

      • djloo27 said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:44 am

Daniel was nice enough to give a straight answer.
I don’t think it’s out of the question that he goes at the TD.
He’s got some genuine value now and makes peanuts…

      • djloo27 said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:53 am

He really is a Cardinal type of player!

  10. alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:33 am

Kontos sure how a lame excuse for Leone the other night with his struggles.
:Well this different factors going into StLouis&LA with humidity and gripping a baseball over Oracle Park,Wtf your a big league pitcher you should be able to grip a ball in any park…

i gave up DVRing shit years ago. Unless I’m going to turn my ph off which I’m not going to do

    • djloo27 said, on July 25, 2021 at 9:50 am

MLBTV archives the games about an hour after they’re over, so sometimes I go that route.
Still tough to avoid a score if you turn anything on.
When I DVR Ranger (hockey) games, I might get a spoiler text from an angry friend or two…

dubon, as Xoot noted homered the other day and had 2 hits last night in laugher W, raising BA to .392.
Ramos had 0 fer but got 3 walks stole a bag and scored 3 times. Only runs Sac gave up were 2 in an inning of work by—Trevor Gott.
Will wilson homered for Richmond. Hitting only .215 but playing SS there after promotion from High A Eugene.
Beede pitched the other night for Sac, went 3 2/3 gave up only 1 unearned run but threw 78 pitches. He took L as Sac didn’t score. One of guys who followed him was Doval who gave up 3 hits 3 runs in 1 inning of work.

Team may have been emotionally exhausted after the Flodger series but they cant let up on them as they come into SF. Winning two not a must but if SmelLA takes two they will be mentally over last week’s Jansen meltdown.

But these last two losses should be a sign that they need add pieces to remain seriousn contenders. One starter one bat…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2021 at 10:20 am

Mitch Haniger 2 more HR’s and a double for 3 RBI’s last night. There’s the RH power bat outfielder that would be perfect for this LU. Not a rental either as ridiculously cheap contract of 3 million doesn’t expire till after 2022 season..

  15. gianthead said, on July 25, 2021 at 10:01 am

Was a little shocked to see Flav’s note about Barry turning 57 and immediately thought has to be a mistake, he cant be that old then realized I will be 54 in sept…FUCK!

While schedule does include rematch with Dogs, plus Division leaders Houston and Milwaukee, there are some “trap” games in next 3 weeks too–6 games with AZ and 4 at home with Rockies who are 10-35 on road.

There is nobody in that LU that is scary. Maybe that is the key to Gyros success. Also the key to when they lose…

      • Flavor said, on July 25, 2021 at 11:32 am

exactly. That LU LOOKS terrible. 100% castoffs/guys no team wanted

      • willedav said, on July 25, 2021 at 11:42 am

who cares what it looks like? only care what it does. Same goes for pitching.
Giants held Max Muncy, scary as he is, to 2-10 over last couple Dogs games. and what happened? Taylor was guy that hurt SF.
Giants entire team except for BC, is built around cast off under radar guys. And their offense is one of top run scoring teams in the NL.

  19. willedav said, on July 25, 2021 at 11:09 am

Kat, Haniger has 25 bombs (next closest on team have 18 and 12) and best OPS on team. why would M’s, having surprising season 7 games above .500, dump this guy? Story on MLBTR said they are looking for SP and 2b help…how would Giants and M’s fit?

    • alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2021 at 12:00 pm

Well they also need a catcher cause the one’s they have are no good..
Let’s face are OF needs a boost desperately especially a RH slugger..
Ok here’s a proposal, Bart, Dubon& Hejelle, throw in Tauchman for a bag of balls as well, for Haniger and reliever Schienrider?

  20. snarkk said, on July 25, 2021 at 11:29 am

Bonds at 57 off the street and bike trail would be more dangerous at bat than Tauchman; even his strike outs would be far more interesting…

  24. snarkk said, on July 25, 2021 at 1:49 pm

SabEvans traded Reynolds in 2018 to get Cutch.
He’s now got a .921 OPS for the year, and clearly the best player the Pirates have. Cutch essentially made no difference to the Giants over the few months he was here, before they traded him near the deadline that season to the Yanks for Avelino (where is he?). So, 1/2 a near useless season of Cutch in exchange for an OFer good for a decade that makes the current OF crop in SF look like pikers. Nice parting shot move the Giants are still suffering from, SabEvans…

    • alleykat69 said, on July 25, 2021 at 1:59 pm

Yeah not Sabes finest moment dealing Reynolds.
Guess he owed them one for fleecing Schmidt and Voglesong back in the days..

    • djloo27 said, on July 25, 2021 at 2:41 pm

I’d give ’em a pass on Reynolds.
When you think of all the deals that worked out and contributed to the 3 titles, it’s really not fair…

    • zumiee said, on July 25, 2021 at 2:53 pm

They are what they are now. An HR/K team, like the Dodgers. A team can win a championship that way, but it has its frustrations watching it for entertainment value.

      • snarkk said, on July 25, 2021 at 3:03 pm

I don’t think a team like that can win the WSeries. The Doghairs of last year were much more talented that this Giants team. Pitching in the playoffs is tougher that the regular season, expecting as many homers in the post season is fool’s gold, IMO…

OBP .283, SLG .281. Yikes and a half. How is that even possible for major league position player?
      [ Yaz is at 26% K rate, with a .517 SLG ]
I keep waiting for a DFA, it doesn’t happen.
IDK what that says, maybe nothing, about OFers at Sac…

      • willedav said, on July 25, 2021 at 3:27 pm

I think you’re right, that’s exactly what it is. I’m not defending Tauchman, but Z/H haven’t moved him yet. Kap has him at far end of bench and hardly ever plays him, last of 13. But whomever replaces him likely isn’t any great shakes either. Braden Bishop and McCarthy have both been fails at ML level.

      • snarkk said, on July 25, 2021 at 3:48 pm

        Well, I can’t explain it.
He’s effectively near hopeless as a hitter, for an extended period of time.
