“There is No Tomorrow….”
The Great DJ Loo said that….
I am out of town and maybe I have missed something but it appears LA and SD have made massive moves and we did squat. That is very hard to tolerate.
I understand this season is “found money” nobody expected this, etc. And I’m not saying mortgage the future. But to just do nothing is a loser attitude and you have to wonder what the players think about that. I know I said last week that the players trust Z and Kap but how can you look at what LA and SD did and go “well, our front office must really believe in us.” Human nature doesn’t work that way.
You have to try to win every year otherwise what are you even doing? Some years that’s not possible and in those years I understand not taking the risks of trading to try to improve your team because that would be pointless. But we have the best record in baseball. Why do you throw that away and sit on your hands as the Scherzer-led Dodgers just steamroll you?
Assuming Z does nothing today, and really what can he do at this point with so many impact players scooped up, I will have to grade this trade deadline as an F- for him.
mm few hours left but yes this is exactly what I asked earlier—saw another blogger make same point you are making, that clubhouse would be in an uproar if other teams made deals and Giants did not. Quote from Crawford I saw from Shea indicated he didn’t care, but that’s for publication. You can always play underdog card, ala 2010.
I would say this though–regardless of talent gap, which only got worse, btw Giants and others in NL West, game is played on the field, not according to projections or spreadsheets. And Giants have been best so far. Look what they’ve done to Cody Bellinger, with Jarlin Garcia and host of others.
i don’t remember how you worded the comment but i recall it was something like “if Farhan doesn’t do enough how will that sit with the clubhouse.” My point at the time was that they will trust what ever moves he makes. But I wasn’t prepared for him to do NOTHING. No moves whatsoever. Not even the smallest move. So yeah, if the deadline comes and goes with him doing NOTHING…….F-
yes. I saw the original comment (from blogger on another site) as quoted and thought hmmnn I wonder if that’s true. I don’t think so but it’s an interesting idea, and unfortunately LA went all out. Not sure local beat writers would get full story out of clubhouse or if they would post it. Fans, I can see are upset. Players? idk
Still time…only guy gone so far I wanted was Hudson, and Dogs didn’t help leaky pen any.
Didn’t Giants beat Scherzer with Tigers in 2012?
Who knows what this team will look like next year? I doubt Z or Kotter expected to be in this position, but 100+ games into the season, it’s for real and management has to take it seriously. A career gambler I know always told me there’s no such thing as “house money” – once you win it, it’s yours so treat it that way. Standing pat is not acceptable now. Guarantee the Mets will do something big today – Z has to as well. Might not be in this position for 10 more years…
Why are there teams in every sport that are perennial losers even though they always draft high?
Always building for the future that never arrives…
To me it all starts at the top. Whether baseball, football, horseracing, whatever. Making solid decisions is difficult it seems.
I’ve wondered about that too, Loo. Look at the Padres, I think up until last year they were in rebuild mode since 2010. I think the Pirates have been rebuilding since the 60s.
Gotta go for it when you can. Sometimes the trades don’t work out (Beltran) but sometimes they are just plain magic (Ross).
“We feel really good about the way we’re playing. If there’s the right opportunity to add to this team, I think we have a little bit of a different mindset than we did in 2019,” Zaidi said. “But I think we’re still going to be careful with anything that’s involving our long-term plans and some of the younger guys we have coming up that we’re really excited about.”
I think I will trust Zaidi, et. al., to make the right decision regarding the trade deadline.
I think it can be argued that when you make a deal this time of year that you are basically telling the team you don’t believe in them and they can’t sustain their success. So we’re gonna get rid of a few of you and bring in players we think are better.
This team has produced the best record. I’m cool with letting them see it through. I think they have earned that.
(Plus i think we ARE building something for the future and have the brain trust to do it right—-and I don’t want us giving away any future pieces)
I have to agree. I’ve constantly harped on team ‘chemistry’ as a secret ingredient to the success that a team , this team, has used this year and 3 WS years that other teams talk about only. So if that has worked to ingrain the players to pull for each other and not want to break that chain…..let’s just push forward, hope that those injured come back to leave other teams wondering if throwing money once again isn’t a sure solution.
We just spent the Pittsburgh Series lamenting how the Giants traded away Reynolds to get Cutch. The Giants of 2018 were going to win right now.
That wasn’t a deadline deal.
Completely different animal…
Reynolds was in A ball when we traded him and we were just coming off a 98 loss season, I think they also added Longo that year.
I wonder with our newfound success if the Giants will be a preferred destination next year with FA’s. It wouldn’t surprise me if we made a couple of small moves and stand pat until next year.
Tauchman DFA’d yesterday. I wasn’t aware of that. (All you do to me is Tauch Tauch)
I’m with Crawford, whether his take is simply for public consumption or not. I assume part of the problem with striking a deal is the SF players’ oft noted lack of appeal to other teams (contract size, lousy splits, injuries). They still have at least 2 guys coming back to the roster this year, so they have to dump some of the current players to accommodate them and any other newcomers. At the end of the day, Zaidi may look at his motley crew and Kris Bryant’s OPS and calculate how many extra runs over two months is the big name really going to add to an already productive offense.
Not sure if I am in the minority or not (not that it matters), but I am more in line with Blade and SanDog’s comments. I trust that Z made the right call, even if he decides that it was not worth it to make a move (cost outweighs the benefit).
Same.
And just imagine, picture it, how thrilled we will be when SF wins the NL West, as they will, moves or not. Bank it, bitches.
How many times have we been in this position? Fuck the future! Win now if you have the chance which we do. Why do you think everyone in contention is making these deals? It’s because this is what you do this time of year to give your team a bump to put you in a position to win in the postseason. Sitting pat is inexcusable.
I agree.
None of our young guys are guaranteeing us SHIT in the future. The future is now goddamit! Tomorrow doesn’t exist AND IT NEVER WILL
My latest book (my eighteenth): https://amzn.to/320RtDk
I think roster uncertainty is reason NOT to trade any prospects whatsoever. Who knows how much Crawford Longoria and Posey have left? Maybe Yaz too has shot his wad. 1b?
Pitching, I mean Giants have nothing of value they can afford to trade away with so little ready to step in yet.
How may titles would we have won without Javier Lopez, Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro?
How did those guys impact the team’s chemistry?
Other guys and other deals flopped. That’s how it goes. We all know the names.
When you have a chance to go far, you have to take a shot.
More often than not it doesn’t work out.
Incredibly it worked out for the Giants 3 times in 5 years.
No one imagined that – just like no one saw this season coming.
Players don’t get insulted – they know it’s all business.
Scutaro, Pence and Glasschez were all good trades around ones like Reynolds. Hey, I’d like to see us try to get Story. I’m not saying sink in the mud, just don’t go all balls to the wall like the Padres. Remember a couple years ago when the Padres won the offseason with a bunch of ‘great’ deals and were gonna contend? Nope.
As far as teams like Pitts and the Pads go, they are held to no accountability. Throw in the Orioles and A’s as well. These owners cry poverty over their sad stadium situations, threaten to leave, dismantle their teams repeatedly while raking in tons of money that they never disclose. That the A’s are successful plays no part in the decisions that the upper management is making. They obviously don’t give a shit either way as they draft high quality guys and trade before having to pay them while dreaming about the truckloads of money Oakland may give them to keep them around.
Mark my insanely optimistic prediction. And don’t forget: I’m the doomer who emailed Blade in JUNE of 2010 to say, “I guess it just ain’t our year.” As for this year, “There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio [i.e., Flappers], than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”
Here’s hoping they still somehow land Kimbrel, so everyone can be happy.
If tomorrow doesn’t exist and we know for a FACT it never will why isn’t Zaidi making moves? Other contenders aren’t doing this because they are bored. They want to win NOW and they know that to do that they need to add on. Every good team has a hole or two to fill. Do I now change my mind about Z? Is he consumed with so much hubris he thinks he’s built the perfect team already????! Say it ain’t so, Z
I’ll be disappointed if Z doesn’t trade for a starter and/or a reliever, because as the baseball cliche goes, you can never have enough pitching. And if we don’t get another starter, that puts the focus squarely on whether we see pre- or post-ASG Gausman tonight. If it’s the latter, that could be trouble.
I’d love to get Maeda from the Twins…
So Berrios goes to Tor and I don’t sweat that because they literally gave away a kings ransom to get him. I didn’t want him that badly. Loo I like your Maeda idea and I am still holding out hope for Kimbrel
Yeah, I think Maeda makes sense – experienced NL West guy, playoff tested, signed for 2 more years at Z type money. Get him and Bryant and we’re good to go. Barlow from KC would be gravy…
How about Pitcher Rasiel Iglesias from the Angels?
You can’t stand pat every team in 1st place has even upgraded to improve there chances to “WIN NOW”.The Giants are the only ones who haven’t.I’m just stunned with the position there in that they would consider standing Pat and riding out with what they have.
And I’m not thrilled about how long it takes them to realize a player stinks like Tauchman,Wishler, and Brebbia before u finally jettison into the transporter and beam then into open space..
Great as the Giants still sit on their asses.. breaking news Jose Berrios to Toronto last good pitcher after Scherzer…
Giants just won home and away series vs. LA. they are 8-8 on season, only 3 games left.
Something wrong with that? Everyone else has been predicting they fall apart for months…and? They just got Crawford back, with good results, and will get more reinforcements back soon.
Giants have 10 more left with Pads, current record 5-4.
Dodgers have 9 left with SD—current record 3-7.
so while LA has been killing dregs of division, that means they are 11-15 vs. SD and SF. Not good.
I hear the comments that you have to improve to win now. I am not necessarily buying into that. If Z and Harris feel that there are no trades where the cost (money or prospects) justifies the return, I am good with that analysis.
But I find it hard to believe that there isn’t a starter and/or reliever that won’t break the bank and will help the team now.
Again, I trust our leadership to make the right deals, or to stand pat.
That’s my issue, Willie. Who do we have to trade? The usual suspects (Bart, Ramos, Luciano, Bishop) are obviously off the table as they should be. And sure we have a bunch of lower level guys, but we spent 4 years getting out from under this this strategy from Sabevans and now we are back?
Bart (25 this December) looks like prime trade bait with Posey almost certain to be back for 2 more years and Bailey in the pipeline. Throw in the homerless hundred something ML AB and suspect D…
I’m not saying they should trade the guys you mentioned, certainly not for any of the shit that’s left out there now. But Z has been a deadline MOVER AND SHAKER in the past and now he does….nothing? WTF????? Go get another reliever. Go get another bat. Work that magic everyone says you have. Again, WHY do you fucking guys think other teams are wheeling and dealing so furiously? They are good teams that recognize this is the time to fill holes for the stretch run! Fuck this is so fucking stupid that not everyone is up in arms about this. We have the chance to really do something this year. These years don’t come around too often. And yet Z sits on his hands. Unconsionable.
To bad we don’t have a direct line into Z’s office. I think both the Pad’s and Dogs are running scared. We definitely have some holes to fill but who knows maybe we already have em in our system.
Panda just got dealt to the Indians
san dawg the first to call me out (via text) on my repeated comment of “the future doesn’t exist and never will.” I was going to flood the blog with that comment over and over until someone called bullshit
DJ, Posey has what looks like another concussion. He may retire after THIS year. Despite the $22 mill on the table. He had no problem walking away last year.
I thought Posey was cleared as NOT having a concussion, Charlie?
Yeah, I guess he was cleared last night. They say he can play. I doubt it tonight.
I don’t know, teams make moves to make moves. Luzardo for Marte? Be still my heart. Panda to the Indians? Marte’s good, but his great years are behind him. Luzardo could be a stud down the road, but is that the missing piece for the A’s? Not really. Do the Indians need a comedian in their dugout?
.
Adam Duval to the Braves for Alex Jackson.
jesus christ, teams DO NOT make moves just to make moves. There is always a reason whether they’re trying to plug a hole, trying to save some contract money, trying to make a huge splash with a blockbuster, get rid of a bad chemistry guy, trying to open up a spot on the roster, etc….the list goes on and on but they aren’t making moves because they’re fucking bored lol
Funny reading the comments about imminent trades, there’s no talk of the Giants.
Which leads me to believe it WILL happen. Kimbrel is just a bridge too far. Sticking with the Story story.
if i had my choice i’d probably go Iglesias over Kimbrel. But whatever, I am expecting neither
Chicago wants a ton for Kimbrel. You willing to go there? Bart and Ramos? All in?
Bart and Ramos? WF are you even talking about. Look, not everything has to be go all in. Zaidi is supposed to be the one who knows how to make under the radar trades. He has a lot of history HERE doing just that. And this year he did fucking NOTHING
No. FUCK NO.
What do you think the Cubs want for Kimbrel? Solano, Alvarez, and Braden Bishop?
it was ludicrous to think the Cubs were asking for Bart AND Ramos and it would have been ludicrous for Z to offer them. Did you see what the White Sox gave up? They gave up shit.
Exactly!
Kimbrel to the white sox. Hmmmmm another team making a move to make their team better. Shocking approach
And you have Liam Hendrix? I heard they will alternate Kimbrel&Hendrix to close.Hmm?Hendrix has been used a lot so 2 studs now.Wow did not see that one..
Goddam it’s Bryant are bust at this point, maybe Igelisas which would be good..
exactly. They already had a lights out closer now they add Kimbrel. This is what good teams do: they get better at this time of year.
That was for your 11:05 post BF…
Iglesias would be a cheaper get and he’s even a 2 inning guy besides a closer.
I don’t see Trevor Story coming here, I actually think his right elbow is messed up, he’s been short hopping the 1st baseman are air mailing some.Long throws from 3rd, maybe 2nd base with Solano to a super utility role as his stats are down..
So, let me get this straight . . . If the front office, led by Z, doesn’t make a trade, he’s stroking his baloney poney and he’s an idiot? I beg to differ.
In my universe, I suspect he is working the phones 24/7 to improve the club and if a deal doesn’t occur, it’s simply because the cost(s) were too high/prohibitive.
Idiom Definition: It takes two to tango is a common idiomatic expression which suggests something in which more than one person or other entity are paired in an inextricably-related and active manner, occasionally with negative connotations.
he’s not an idiot he got us this far. I think it’s possible he choked though.
I am with you 110% Blade.
LMAO the White Sox gave up Madrigal and some no name reliever named Codi Heuer who was a 6th round draft pick. SOME BIG HAUL, lol. Madrigal is just a guy, no power or speed. He’s like a healthy Matt Duffy
Which I was a fly on the wall in Z/H war room..
The intensity and stress levels along with a ear infection from hundreds of calls / well I guess they would be on speaker but still, a hoarse throat comes into play for sure as well.Good thing Z has little hair to pull out..
Well, that’s bothersome. Giving up scraps for Kimbrel. At least he didn’t go to the Pads. Hey, there’s still 1:17 to go . . .
I never thought they would go all in on shit but I did think they would do something.
Well, Madrigal’s pretty solid, but still. Seems like an odd move.
The happiest people so far that there has been no deal are Belt, Ruff, Slater, Dickerson, The Duggar, Aaron Sanchez and Alex Wood.
If this was a vet team who had never won and trying to get over the hump, I would suspect the clubhouse would be angry about staying pat. But there three oldest clubhouse vets in Posey, Crawford and Belt have all won multiple world series. Been there done that. Dont seem they would be that emotionally invested to raise a ruckus and we know none of the three are emotion on your sleeve leaders. Longoria is the one guy who has not won shit but he has hardly been around his entire tenure with the team. Does he even have any clubhouse presence???
“Tomorrow doesn’t exist” is the worst kind of leadership. Of course, tomorrow exists. A lot of us are older folks, and we want everything to happen right now, but that’s not how to build a great organization. Z wants the Giants to be a playoff team every single year, just like he accomplished with the Dodgers. Z caught a lot of flack early on in his Dodger job for not trying harder to win right now. Dodger fans wanted guys like Bellinger and Beuhler to be traded to get established veterans. I check out the Dodger blogs once in a great while. Z caught the same flack early in his Dodger time.
But do we even have a Bellinger or Buehler in our minors??? I dont see it bit not sold Bellinger is a consistent long-term stud either.
Early in their minor league careers, those two weren’t projected to be stars. In fact, Buehler had Tommy John surgery at the beginning of his minor league career.
Bellinger’s struggles right now make it easy to forget he’s won an MVP award.
Why would the Cubs give up Kimbrel for relative shit. And to the cross-town rivals. Not shocking we did not land him but the Dodgers did not offer up way more than Madrigal and
a reliever??? Now the Mets are talking about adding Baez so would not be a stretch to see Baez and Bryant being traded together to the Mets…
Something seems off with Story but adding in Jon Gray in a deal for both maybe is still possible in this last hour .
I think Z doesn’t know how to operate at the next level. He’s good with garnering the scrubs when his team is languishing. But now he finds himself out on the lead—nothing but a northwest breeze blowing in his face. Unfamiliar territory for him for the first time that he’s been in charge of such a major org. I think he froze up. He choked.
I think it is too early to make that call…and I seriously doubt he is in over his head on this…I think he is one of the brightest execs out there, if not the absolute best. But to say he choked without knowing any details…I don’t see it. All good…we can agree to disagree.
May be right
I have flapped in the past that I think he is too much of a dumpster diver and hesitant to go big but was giving him until next year to be competitive and then this year happened but think our team is a bit of a Farhan mirage. Padres actually more of a threat I think than the Flodgers but will see how Scherzer and Turner change that dynamic.
The latest I read is that the Rox have no intent to trade Gray.
The Giants traded Susac to get Pence, and Culberson to get Scutaro. Those were two steals for the Giants, and kudos to Sabean for pulling those trades off. I think it’s harder to make those kinds of steals anymore, though. All the GMs are sharper now about evaluating minor league talent, in general.
so what some of you guys seem to be saying is that Z wouldn’t even give up shit for Kimbrel? Got it. Ok, fuck this day, I’m headed to the casino for the rest of it. Later days.
Baseball America on the SF Giants 2024 LU, just thinking ahead boys..

No.2 Kyle Harrison (22)
No.3 Seth Corry (25)
No.4 Logan Webb (27)
No.5 Tristan Beck (28)
Thoughts?
That pretty much means we got the goods in our system already.
Doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch…given we are talking three years out…
Dont think Harrison will be a starter more closer and Heliot real deal in the field. He will be in LF. Dont see Wilson as a big league SS. He is teeny. I think since the Flodgers just announced with Trey Turner that they are not keepng Seager who may be our best target to rub into their faces and Seagar may be super motivated. I am not counting on Gausman to be the #1 in three mire seasons. I am hoping Hjelle will be s legit starter and I really really liked this Caleb Killian as a back-end starter.
Not so sure Baily, Dubon, Yaz or Gausman will still be in the organization in 2024.
Looks like Bryant is still potentially in play with us…he was the guy I always wanted more than anyone else…
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/07/kris-bryant-rumors-deadline-day.html
agreed, would be big help if they could get him.
Meda Buxton and Iglesias still out there and available. any or all of above would help, agreed.
Buxton healthy???
No IL fractured left hand. A stud if ever could stay healthy and he never has unfortunately..
This whole week leading up to today has been wild.
The bottom line it’s GM’s in every organization evaluating their talents.
Teams that evaluate their talent well will win, teams that don’t will lose..
Bryant may be ours
Espn reporting remember I circled Bryant for the last year:)
Mlb channel also reporting
Giants get Bryant!!!!
A move that had to make!!!
Not sure of the returns yet!
Perfect fit!
Whoop! Bryant joining the Orange and Black!
They need to try hard to lock him in long term.
The Great Chicago Fire Sale!
Agree Kat. You know Z and Harris will be working their asses off to make that (long-term deal with Bryant) happen…
I’m headed back to the house to put out a new thread about this bad boy! Z-man! He was slow playing me! Woo hoo!!!
KNBR saying Bryant headed for SF, no word on who is leaving…
Giants sent Cubs:
Bart & Wade
Baggarly saying that is not the case…
Then again, the local beat guys seem to be in the dark a lot, compared to national sources…
MLB Network hosts think it was a high price to pay…
Yikes conflicting reports have the Giants giving up Joey Bart& Lamont Wade, wow that’s a steep price for a rental, that now the desperately need to lock in long term!!!! Make it happen Z/H!!
Baggs says Canario and Kilian…
Yeah that’s what Pavs has said too.Still good talent but I’m ok with it better..
Bad job by MLB Network if Baggs is right…
Pav has the same two.
KNBR reporting two minor leaguers down the list (Canario and Killian) are going to the Cubs.
Nobody else. Killian looks good, but who knows with pitchers?
If yes, that’s a steal…
NEW THREAD
MLB confirms Baggs is right…
