A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Against All Odds

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 6, 2021

Through 8 innings the best part about yesterday’s game was the sweet burn I busted on Doug Greenwald:

Flavor said, on August 5, 2021 at 2:53 pm(Edit)

Greenwald sounds like he’s got a cold doing the game from SpoongeBob’s pinapple

I know, I know, thank you….

Then the most insane inning since 1993 happened and they win and when the dust finally settled I had found my long lost first cousin:

djloo27 said, on August 5, 2021 at 8:06 pm(Edit)

Anybody think Jake McGee could pass for a relative of Big Flavor?
Maybe a first cousin?

We get a win and I am reunited with my blood relative.

I didn’t see either one of those things happening yesterday…..

I can see the resemblance! Loo is on to something with that one! Great call.

  2. sandog said, on August 6, 2021 at 8:00 am

If Flav were a reliever, I think his style would be similar to McGee’s as well. Flav isn’t going to try to fool you with off-speed bendy stuff. He’s gonna throw high gas down the middle and live with the results…..

    • Flavor said, on August 6, 2021 at 8:02 am

That would be my mound approach as well as my life’s motto. Thinking of picking up a fried eggplant pizza 🍕 from amichi’s later today, dawg

Some numbers from a Bagg’s article in The Independent.

Giants had a 1.3% chance of a comeback after 8 innings

They had not come back from a four-run deficit in the 9th since 1993

They had not won a game after being shut-out for 8 innings and trailed by at least four runs since 1941.

So, it was one helluva win. So glad I stuck with that game. This team is so damned resilient, you just cannot ever count them out.

Brew Crew will be tough, but this team has been in tough spots before…

I don’t know how anybody could be a D-Backs fan are even want to play for them except for a check they get on the 1st and 15th, which should include checks for their fans as well. Ever since Bums 7 inning no no this team has hit the shittier. They have checked out,so any teams comeback is inevitable.
Their manager Lovello is a wasted space of dugout space. He just sits there while any number of his pitchers are getting hammered ( exception Kelly) and never has a guy warming up( well u made this mess u get out of it approach) and it never ends up good.

  4. alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2021 at 8:20 am

Yeah real close in resemblance.Lefty with the no bars approach, dealing heat out of his beedy eyes 👀 contemplating growing a Hitler little stach just because he can. That’s one bad ass white boy.To bad he’s in Dodger blue in that shot.McGee looks in better shape with the Giants, total porker in that picture..

Most of you probably remember TedSpe as Loo’s strongest competition for number of LOL posts. He was also a real film buff, with an encyclopedic knowledge of low budget horror movies. When I met him at one of the early Flapaloozas, I mentioned to him that Flavor looked a little like Laird Cregar. He concurred.

Naturally, not as on the mark as Loo’s McGee call:

I do remember TedSpe. He was in theatre, right?

Good one…but the nod goes to Loo…

I look forward to the next 4 run, 9th inning comeback win in 2049…

  7. James said, on August 6, 2021 at 11:16 am

Last night, Loo asked if we grasped what we were witnessing. I’ve texted something like the following to a couple of friends today:

What they are doing right now may be unique in baseball history. The effective use of that many players has to be unprecedented. They basically have no one on the roster who sucks.

    • James said, on August 6, 2021 at 11:19 am

The way Kapler was able to substitute and move players on defense in the last couple of innings yesterday was a thing of beauty.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2021 at 11:40 am

They did but they saw the errors in they’re ways and realized to cut bait and move on.Not all Z/H moves work out(Tauchman,Wishler,Brebbia) like a lot of GM’s but he does no how to fix it for the better.

  8. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2021 at 11:31 am

I like that Kotter doesn’t seem to be married to L/R matchups in the late innings.
Just get the best hitter available up there.
He wisely used the Grave Duggar as a PR carrying the tying run rather than save his slumping bat
to face a RH reliever (over Buster or Wilmet) just to play the percentages. The result is not necessarily relevant…

  9. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2021 at 1:12 pm

I think this configuration makes it pretty clear that the Grave Duggar has been relegated to the bench…

    1. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) RF
    2. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    3. Buster Posey (R) C
    4. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    5. Kris Bryant (R) 3B
    6. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
    7. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
    8. Tommy La Stella (L) 2B
    9. Logan Webb (R) P

    • chipower9 said, on August 6, 2021 at 1:20 pm

And come Sunday when they must reinstate Gausman, it may be a relegation to Sacto…

      • zumiee said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:13 pm

Slater and Duggar are basically the same guy, although one batting lefty, and one righty. So having both is kind of a redundancy at the moment. I would think the Giants are going to get real creative to keep Wade and Estrada on the big league roster the rest of the way. Getting creative with the IL.

      • zumiee said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:14 pm

My guess is Slater would be leaving instead of Duggar.

      • zumiee said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:15 pm

But it wouldn’t be shocking if Wade and/or Estrada end up getting sent down, but brought back up in September during the roster expansion.

      • snarkk said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:16 pm

Estrada should be kept, the guy is versatile, he can hit, he can run. Somebody else with options can take a Sac visit…

    • snarkk said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:18 pm

I hope Flores gets regular work, now that Belt and LaStella have come back. The guy has been clutch recently, and his pop is worthy…

  10. xoot said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:20 pm

Isn’t Sept expansion two players, three for double-headers? With Longo about to start rehab play, the space will be limited. I bet the options zip to and from Sac after August.

  11. snarkk said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:28 pm

My understanding is that 28 is the expanded MLB active roster limit, for Sept. 1 and beyond to season end.
Unlimited number of pitchers, though, of the 28. Option players can go up and down as before, the 28 can be tweaked day to day.
Double-headers, IDK. The same 5 man taxi squad applies, I think, for Sept….

  12. xoot said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:30 pm

As everyone else on the Giants gets healthy, the pitchers are faltering. But not just the Giants. I saw a note that Kershaw’s likely to take a dog days breather until Sept. And is Hader still on the covid list?

  13. alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2021 at 2:30 pm

They don’t really have to make a move till they get back home, they have Monday off for the easy scuttle run to Sac. The one thing about the Slater/GD duo is they still are 2 of their best late game options if needed for Defense.Still think after his spot start Saturday?that Sanchez won’t be needed, but he can go a few innings in relief over the other BP arms, so maybe he stays? Geez I guess I’m contradicting myself. But it’s nice to have a team with so much depth and few weaknesses..

Got to say, it’s a good feeling in the morning to check out the standings and seeing the 2020 Junior World Series winners languishing in 2nd place for 2 months plus….Guess a full 162 games is quite a challenge for them…

Williams was nasty last year 53 K’s in 27 inning with only 8 hits allowed.
Thank goodness they don’t have that long haired hippie Hader available along with Yelich with Covid..
One thing going great for the Giants most of the year, they go play teams that seem to have a few stars out of their LU , more then the Giants in general..

  34. unca_chuck said, on August 6, 2021 at 7:54 pm

I don’t sweat that loss even a bit. Burnes is super tough.

    • alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2021 at 9:03 pm

Webb was just as tough, actually his stats were better then Burnes.
One of the cheapest one arm HR you’ll ever see.Even Webb couldn’t believe it when it crept over the wall..

    • unca_chuck said, on August 6, 2021 at 9:17 pm

Woodland and Elk Grove have a baseball rivalry that goes bach decades, but I love and respect my Elk Grove homeboys like Rowdy and JD Davis and Madrigal and D Hill etc. Hell, throw Bill Cartwright in there while you’re at it.
Just watched the game on DVR. That HR was ridiculous. Flem/Estes works for me, though I like Flem alone best of all, just like the way Vin used to so it. Bring on the simulcast!!

  47. Macdog said, on August 7, 2021 at 7:31 am

The Slater AB pissed me off. I think Kap’s matchup obsession got the better of him. In that situation, a strikeout is the worst thing that can happen And yet Kap pinch-hit Slater, a guy who now has 32 Ks in 123 AB / 141 PA vs. lefties, instead of leaving in LaStella, who has 0 Ks in 6/6 this season and 3 Ks in 51/59 last season vs. lefties. There was a lot better chance that LaStella was going to put the ball in play than Slater.
