AZ to the Woodshed, Colorado Next
Now that we’ve sent those poor D-Back bastards on their way we get…Colorado for 4? Oh my, more banked wins. The only hiccup to this looks like an undecided pitcher for Saturday’s Flapalooza.
Everyone is saying Logan Webb is our best starting pitcher now. L-O-G-A-N W-E-B-B. We are 32 games over .500 and I bet 98% of casual baseball fans have no idea who Logan Webb is.
Based on the last several starts for our starters, I would not argue the Webb as our best starter right now logic. And I agree Flav, can bet your ass most casual baseball fans outside of NorCal have not clue who the hell he is. Under the radar baby…keep flying low.
Bring on the Rox.
Bums won last night. We remain four up on them.
Friars got blanked last night 7-0 by the Marlins. They are now eight back, but 4 1/2 up on Cincy for the second wild card spot.
Yeah…and somewhat worried about Gausman…barely made it out of the 5th. Hope Bailey can tweek some adjustments for him.
Chris Russo argued yesterday that Giants starters can’t match up to the Bums and post season could be shortened. Others sternly disagreed.
IMO, that deficiency might be offset by the firepower that this team can throw out from 1-8 and a bench others can’t match.
It should be interesting any way you slice it. My concern is the starters and them wearing down by the time the post-season rolls around.
But we have hung-tough with the best of them, and series wins over the bums, Stros, and Brewers are a recent testament of that…
Just the fact that we are discussing our boys potential foray into the postseason is fucking amazing.
Didn’t realize Burnes k’d 10 in a row yesterday.
Logan Webb in his last 3 starts pitching 6 innings strong has given up just 4 runs in 18 innings and it wasn’t against scrubs, Dodgers,Astros,&Brewers
The turnaround for Webb has been control, 24 walks in 79 innings compared to last year 24 walks in 54 innings.
That’s 4 full games with his average of 6 innings not giving up a walk. His improvement and nasty stuff is playing well right now. He’s come along way since those, oh great it’s Webb and his freaking long innings of go take a piss, get a beer, make a snack and he’s still in a 40 pitch inning..
This season has make me feel almost like a kid again. For awhile baseball has been dim for me but not this year.
So true. The anticipation of dialing up a Giants game this year can be overwhelming.
Chi..I actually think the Reds are going to catch the Friars for that W/C spot .They have a much weaker schedule going forward with I believe 10 games with the Pirates, games with 2 cleaning house teams,Cubs&Nats just around 25% teams with winning records.Padres much tougher schedule just playing the Giants&Dodgers a lot and with a much higher winning pct teams down the stretch.
And expect them to lose Tatis Jr as well again , cause they have no clue what to do with him, now CF? I can see the 1st dive are slamming in the wall in the outfield and he will have to be shutdown permanently and get the surgery everyone knows he needs..
Yeah I saw they were working him out in the OF to avoid him diving. Huh? OFers don’t dive or crash into walls? Should be a perfect plan. For a week.
We play the Pads a buttload coming down the stretch. We still have 10-12 with them I think.
Charlie – we have 10 left with the Friars. First see them again for a four game series here (Sept. 12-16), then there 21st-23rd, and finish the regular season with them at our yard (Oct. 1-3).
Got to say the difference between 2010 team and this one is that pitching dominated in 2010 and guys were getting clutch hits in 2010. Where as the Giants don’t really have a dominating pitcher like Timmy, pitching and hitting seem to be doing quite well in 2021. The only other parallel is that once again no high paid sports analyst picked the Giants to do anything.
Uh, are you watching the Giants regularly, Kev? The Giants have got their fair share of “clutch hits” this year. Shit, in the last few series they rallied late for wins.
And I disagree on the pitching. Gausman dominated prior to his last few starts. Giants have third best ERA in MLs, and lead the majors in WHIP and saves.
They did not build the best record in baseball and land 33 games over .500 with smoke and mirrors. They hit, pitch and play solid D.
Chi, read my post again I said the pitching and hitting were doing quite well, and the only reason I called out the pitching is Timmy became a household name rather quickly. I think this team is very well balanced.
Pitching definitely better on 2010 squad, hitting/scoring definitely better on this 2021 team…
Ian Kennedy gets out of bases loaded jam with 2 outs, thanks to blown strike 3 calls that resulted in two walks and Girardi’s ejection, and the Phils phinally beat the Bums. Chance to go up 5 tonight.
The hype train has arrived in Iowa for the Field of Dreams game. Approximately 8,000 fans will attend and the ticket prices range from $1,500 ( cornholed section?) to $ 4,500 are more ( premium corn stalk section?) The teams(NY&Whitesox’s)are both going back in time with back old school uni’s (Whitesox’s look the best imo) and of course Kevin Costner is there, probably to throw out the 1st pitch? Are Dad have catch? moment with the catcher in the movie?
Less than 1/2 hour to game time at the Field of Dreams game. There are 5 tickets on StubHub. $1300 to $2000 each. Somebody’s going to come down on price quickly.
I think the original prices were in the $350 range under the lottery that handed them out initially…
1. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) RF
2. Tommy La Stella (L) 2B
3. Kris Bryant (R) 3B
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
7. Curt Casali (R) C
8. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
9. Logan Webb (R) P
xoot – do you have a current number for Stix? I tried the last one you shared with me and it is not in service.
i’m still not getting the 8K fans in this corn field game. What’s the point of a paltry 8k? This is a made for tv event. And the setting is so awesome, but they should have played this with no fans. That would have made it perfect.
i think it would have been a better match if was the Sox and the Cardinals. A more down home feel.
Chicago is the nearest big city, and the Yankees are the EZ answer to always drum up some interest. That’s my guess for the scheduling. Cubs v. Cards would have made sense, too, but Cubs probably would have lost too much money if one game not held at Wrigley…
Chi, I sent you an email with the number Stix used to call me earlier this week, but it occurs to me that others might want to talk to him, too. This was it:
(763) 325-7541
If that’s offline, maybe things have changed.
Thanks, Mike.
Lincecum wasn’t nearly as great in 2010 regular season as in 08 and 09. But he and Cain both stepped it up in the PS, beautifully, with raw rookie MadBum following. Sanchez? Well. . . . Zito? The 2010 pen, on paper and in memory, seems better, but it’s a new world out there today — three-batter rule, juiced ball, etc.
2021 team doesn’t resemble the 2010 team to me. It also doesn’t resemble 97 or 03, either, though. 😉
Always got to come to Dirty’s defense . . . he was awesome against Atlanta and got screwed by a Fontenot error and shitty bullpen work by Ramirez and Casilla in the NLCS game he pitched. The only thing anyone remembers is Affeldt in the WS saving head case Jonathan . . . which, I guess I have to admit, is not to be unexpected and not even entirely unjustified . . . .
can we hope for something analogous from Cueto this year?
the fans aren’t even making noise they are pointless and distracting in this game just sitting there like idiots
They thought it was a cattle auction.
Thinking about the hundreds/ thousands they dropped on tickets to sit in a cornfield?
Maybe there isn’t enough beer available…
They should of just sent in truckloads and truckloads of Corn Beer only. Food only, corn dogs, corn 🌽 on a stick, corn bread, Cornish game hens, chicken corna bleu, popcorn 🍿, corn maize, corn chowder, corn chips,Walkup music all players have to listen to Korn..
bourbon
Miller beer would be the choice; it has a lot of corn adjunct.
Bud uses rice…
More like the ’62 team. Lots of hitters.
how old were you in 62?
Heh heh. 1. But I caught on early.
fair enough
And I read a little
my son loves to wear his Marichal jersey to games and hear people ask who’s that?
At a game no less.
oh, yes
Flyout to right, it’s a can of corn.
An ear
Yeah, that game is a PR stunt, but it’s still kinda cool.
Too bad it’s cloudy.
Judge smoked an oppo HR way out and into the RF cornfield.
That ball might be worth something…
Too bad neither team has Alex Cobb.
In all seriousness, this really is a momentous night. Joe Buck gets to suck on both the Field of Dreams MLB game and on the Jeopardy guest-host spot at the same time. That’s magical.
There’s no avoiding him.
lol. I’ve always thought that grammatically there should be a passive-aggressive voice.
I’d love for the Gyros, if they got into the WS, to play the ChiSox.
So that they could kick LaRussa’s ass…
i actually think the White Sox are winning it all this year so in some ways I’d like to see us play them but to lose, eh, that’s gonna suck
Fans getting into it some, the last HR was almost a standing corn of ovation applause..
Field of Dreams was a good movie. Honestly, the acting was pretty overdone at points but as you get older it’s really easy to appreciate how rad that movie was for baseball fans
badass movie if you like speeches. Give me Shakespeare or give me action.
if you had issues with your dad, it’s timeless.
ok. maybe I should ask my sons
A Comedy of Errors?
great speeches
Yeah you can never accuse Costner of going easy on the melodrama. James earl jones was great in that. All the history they brought to light was cool. But like the Natural, they laid the schmaltz on with a trowel by the end. Liked the baseball aspect of bull durham but the groupie chick love story part was some gratuitous bullshit
I think Jones’s role in Sandlot was better in every way.
I’ll give you that. That movie was hands down 10x better.
Mr. Heaney still pitching, this could be Green Acres.
If they bring out Arnold Ziffel during the 7th inning stretch to nail some corn in a movable sty, it will be perfect…
MLB is obviously following the lead of the NHL with their outdoor hockey games in Feb, which are pretty cool. But, no matter it wasn’t their original idea. MLB actually has done a cool PR thing for the game, instead of the usual phuckup moves…
if you look at how stacked the White Sox are, they really should be the favorite to win it all.
talking about *torture* is stupid. The announcers are just trying to revive that old motto. That’s in the past, let it go. That’s Bee Wheezy territory.
i don’t remember playing catch with my dad. I probably did I played baseball from 8-18. We golfed a lot together that was our thing. I’d love to play catch with him before he dies though. Probably not going to happen
my son just texted me back: yeah, let’s play catch! we probably have ten or twelve throws left.
you’re lucky you have that. Me and my dad are cool I just can’t remember “having a catch”. I think that’s why the end of that movie hit me so hard. Probably some other lingering stuff too
Say it ain’t So but Connor Joe from Kokomo is doing a real fine job for Colorado. Hitting .299 with 5 bombs and ops over .800! He also beat cancer last season, great for him, I’m pulling hard for him now., just not against the Giants..
Costner is the only actor I can think of that actually had the athletic chops to pull off a believable athlete. Bull Durham, For Love of the Game — he’s got a natural throwing motion. Tin Cup — he’s got a damn good golf swing, too. Didn’t hurt Renee Russo was in that flick.
If you ever have 15 minutes to spare while enjoying an adult beverage or something, check out Costner on youtube when he spoke a eulogy at the funeral of Whitney Houston. Whether you like him or not as an actor, this speech, given the situation, was stunningly good, full of the right balance of anecdotes, remembrance and pathos. Beware of eye irritation…
great point
all these empty seats goddamn. Hope we see it full Sat or I’m gonna be like “from now on we wait till the last possible second to buy tickets”.
what do these splash hits sell for? Why are those boat jockey’s out there doing this?
All for the ball. They don’t sell for shot as far as I know
No idea why they pitched
To Dick there.
Ahit
Shit
Story was Charlie Sheen roided up for Major League and was able to throw 85 MPH fastballs.
Barry Zito territory
Hendrix gives up 4 in the 9th.
These Iowans are
Getting their money’s worth
ChiSox ain’t winning squat with this shifty closer.
‘Shitty’
Yankee haze all in his brain.
Either that or the Black Sox are back!!!
They didn’t sell out any of the Dodger games, so I wouldn’t think it will be over 25,000 for the Saturday game..
Casali is not so horrible now that his hand’s healed
Sox win!!!
Webb and Wade demolish the rockies in two swings. lol. Well, it’s early.
THe fucing white sox look likeabunch of lumberjacks.
Then again, we ain;t no hacks at the plate either!!!
Just like the movie, a happy ending!
Flavor&Unca Chuck so I have an incredible story about the splash hits. My neighbors daughter named Devin (San Carlos Gal)was in her blue/ pink/ white Kayak on Mother’s Day 5/9 and nabbed Padres Jake Croenworth’s 1st ever splash hit off of Johnny Cueto and he wants that ball for good reasons.I believe they have already set up a meet, the next time the Padres are at Oracle this year. She’s a good tough negotiator though, and she mentioned to her Dad&Mom tickets for sure, for the meet and it will happen, a signed bat, and ball, hell maybe go for a signed glove as well. Yeah she has the upper hand, and even being the enemy she will be fair..
If you Google up Jake Croenworth(sp) splash hit Mother’s Day 5/9 it will show her in he Giants Jersey Glory, rockin the moment! Heard she was only the second gal to retrieve a ball from McCovey’s Cove as well, damm impressive!
Damm trying to post this and the Giants go bonkers!
7-0 wow!!
That’s awesome, AK!
Here it is…
https://www.mlb.com/giants/video/jake-cronenworth-homers-3-on-a-fly-ball-to-right-field-wil-myers-scores?t=long-drives
Hey thanks for posting that cool moment Chuck!
Yeah she’s just a do it all gal growing up, playing baseball little league/ Babe Ruth with the boys, she was that good. After all that and straight A’s in high school graduated from NYC with honors and still says u know what I want to get a pilots license in her early 20’s, and did that flying out of San Carlos Airport for kicks.
Then moved on to a job at Boeing in Seattle( big pay 💰) but got bored with it (Kids today??) and now is back in the bay area ( Burlingame) working a big job at the airport, until something else she still wants to pursue..
Cool story,. Hope she gets a good haul. Thanks for the video Charlie.
IDK, Kat.
WWJD?
Yeah Loo..Sadly he’s only batting .292 with 11 HR’s and .1041 OPS
And nobody on the big club could give a shit.No spots to take so it will be another frustrating year, maybe a September callup but I don’t give a shit anymore, he’s obviously not in there plans at all anymore..
Hee Haw! Wade bomb!
German gets bombed.
Many of Costner’s films are undoubtedly over the top and bursting at the themes, so to speak, but I thought his baseball trilogy was an admirable venture. My favorite baseball film will always be the 1951 original Angels in the Outfield (what a stupid f-ing remake they made of that one)… no, I wasn’t yet alive when that was made, but I remember watching it as a young boy when WPIX 11 in NY aired it during a rained out Yanks game. Gave me goosebumps. I don’t ever want to rewatch it, as it could never live up to its place in my memory.
Loo, by the way, I agree with your 4am post ending the last thread about MadBum.
Good find on the video, Unca, it almost landed in her kayak!
Hey, can we get 2 more innings out of Webb?
A memorable day that I don’t remember at all…
1st time i’ve thought of Field of Dreams seen since my dad died. Choked me up watching the scenes from the game just mow.. I got my love of baseball from my dad so it connected us until the end. We played catch some, but more memory of him throwing batting practice to us. You never realize at the time but he was 40 or so and threw 2 paint buckets full of balls, sometime 3, to my brother and I. 100+ pitches. My arm would fall off if i did that.
Watching Giants MASH is fun too! LW jr crushed that ball.
My dad knew baseball and thought I was the most natural 2B he’d ever seen.
I opted to become a drug addict/alcoholic/degenerate gambler.
So it goes, and who cares?
Took that walk on the wild side
It’s all bullshit…
-Robert Hagan (1940-2004)
My buddy Hagan was obsessed with Spectacular Bid.
He died 25 years to the day that a safety pin and an incompetent jockey killed his Triple Crown.
John Nerud said SB was better than Secretariat.
I know I’m talking to myself…
Does it Motter?
No Le Hace (Second to Riva Ridge in ’72 Derby)…
Seeing you and Twinnie on the ball field would have been an epic occurrence. THAT would make a fucking movie.
Field of screams?
Wanna have a catch, Dunderhead?
Sucks he’s not here for this season…
Lol 😂 Yeah I miss the condescending Twin.He would be defending Tauchman to the end, that he should of never have been cut..
I miss his cantankerous ass, too. We (as we all have) got into some good tussles, but we also hit it off, too.
Flavor busts his ass here every day for us.
I would bet that the memory of Twin is part of his (subconscious?) motivation.
Feel free to argue with my degree from prestigious Amherst…
Another stellar evening of 6 inning pitching by Logan Webb!
That’s 4 straight 6 in games for him, and after 2 early walks I’m thinking great the old Logan returns, but only the 2 and that’s it to also allow only 2 hits and punching out 8.He’s dealing strong right now.Throw in a killer 2 rbi base hit for icing on the cake!
Call me crazy because I am, but he’s moving up to the 2nd spot in the rotation right now behind Gausman while Disco slides into the 3rd spot right now..
Doval’s name always reminds me of this guy who was one helluva pitcher…
Sitting here cranking some shit out on my part time job. Gail has the game on. Fucking Webb and then Wade. Wow!
This team is BAD ASS!
Fucking WordPress. Just noticed my earlier post didn’t post…
Mac/Flapalooza gang – I decided to get a room for Saturday night (a two hour + drive at night just doesn’t appeal). Staying at the Marriott Union Square. I think that is where you’re hanging you hat. Not sure what time I’ll be in the City, but will reach out to you all when I am headed to the yard. Looking forward to it!
Nice, now you can down a few at the game!
Exactly! Driving home after the game would just be too damned ugly.
I hope someone keeps (and posts) a scorecard…
Loo – I haven’t kept score in forever, but may give it a shot. If I do, I’ll send it to ya.
I don’t always do it, but it really keeps my head in the game.
Sometimes the beer and the company take me out of it…
Webb’s the man!
Thank God he got his head out of that vise…
I just killed a fruit fly that’s been taunting me for 3 days.
And fuck him and his whole goddamn family…
Just cremated the cocksucker for good measure.
Next stop, Bellevue…
Blank the Rox!
And the train kept a rolling…
Five up on the bums!
Daily News back page: STALK-OFF HOME RUN
Just another whipping of a bad team!
Giants 5 games up on the Dogpile, life is good with this amazing team!!
And how in the hell can anyone say that Lamont Wade would of ever been on this team and now has 15 bombs the same as Buster Posey!!
Unbelievable!!
Wade is a revelation…
While Field of Dreams got heaving on the sappiness, I did dig, as others have shared, the history and speeches.
My dad played some company softball when I was a kid and I loved going to the games with him. He’d also take me to American Legion games. Much of what I learned of baseball, and my love of the game, came from my dad.
My parents divorced when I was about 12 and my dad took a job in Singapore, and died of a heart attack a couple of years later. Hit me hard, and for that reason, the dad-son aspect of FoD gets to me, as much of my later little league years were without him.
There were times when my dad and I had nothing to talk about except John Cumberland.
It was good enough…
Another call from Stix tonight, from a bed in Clearwater County Memorial Hospital. Lyme disease and other issues laid him low, but calls to friends brought ambulances. He’s in great spirits right now. Friends are helping him make plans for winter housing.
The number he called from is the one I posted above this afternoon. He says hello to all. Hopes to be back here asap.
If Stix was a ballplayer, his walk up song would be “I Shot The Sheriff”…
we argued briefly over Field of Dreams. He likes it. He saw the AL game on the tv in his room; he hated the fox production and offered some interesting opinions about the commercials.
Oh my god that’s gold!!!
POTD Loo!!
Who do you have to blow to get a fuckin’ POTD around here?
POTD!
I’ll pass on the BJ Loo, maybe Stix needed to shoot the deputy as well?
