A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Running Away With It

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 13, 2021

Five games up on the Dodgers. On Auggie freaking 13th. That is incredible. This season is going down as the weirdest one of all time.
I have been remiss on changing out the POTDs. The aged and bedraggled POTD from James lasted so long I lost momentum on that section of the blog. But, on this the penultimate day before another Flapalooza, I will try to re-dedicate myself to that task.

You nailed it Flav, this is one of the weirdest seasons of all time. And for me, it has been one of the most fun. I don’t think any Flappers expected over .500 this year, and if any did, it was a few games at best.

Looking forward to the Flapalooza tomorrow!

Reflexes got the better of me, great line.
Incredible trip out here by Mac. Enjoy game guys, pre and post game too. I sure did at last flap game 2019. Great game, great people.
Stix, as Dylan and blues fan, might have chosen Hiway 61, with Sam Lay and Al Kooper

As SanDog said earlier, beware of Yaz or whomever is in RF tossing ball into stands btw innings. Though results were unfortunate, young kids sitting below us wound up with the ball.
On another site saw twitter pic from Tuesday night game with kid in Crawford #35 orange creamsicle uni tossing ball back and forth with Ketel Marte. Dunno context, but pic shows him in front row of CF bleachers throwing a ball to Marte on the field and Marte throwing it back to him.
Awesome thing to do, for visiting player.

For those attending the Flapalooza tomorrow…this in an email I just got from the Giants:

Face Masks. All fans are required to wear face masks when accessing indoor spaces. Face masks are encouraged in outdoor areas. Masks are to be well-fitted and cover the nose and mouth.

No Covid-19 Entry requirements. Fans are not required to be fully vaccinated or provide proof of a negative Covid test to enter Oracle Park.

Masking will just be a daily thing in are lives for atleast another 2 years and beyond..

Some people throughout baseball compare Wade to a smaller version of Barry Bonds.
Yes there’s only one great Barry Bonds, but Wade has similarities like crowding the plate, very quick wrists to turn on inside pitches but can also go opposite field with power!
Like Loo mentioned yesterday, he’s a “Revelation” for this club, and the Giants brass/ coaches have unleashed unexpected power that they felt he could produce.
He’s hit 11 HR’s now at Oracle in just 33 games tops on the team, 15 overall tied with Buster!
Man if they somehow stuck with him from the beginning instead of the yo yo train who knows if he doesn’t lead the team in HR’s and would of been right in there for ROY Award!

With Longoria coming back either tomorrow are Sunday this will change the LU even more, so the new starting outfield should be imo Bryant LF Yaz CF and Wade in RF it doesn’t get any better then that!

    • snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 11:53 am

The Wade pickup for basically nothing in exchange is like the Cody Ross in 2010. A real boost to the entire lineup. It ticks me off that baseball cannot attract more Black kids to play this game so we’d all enjoy the play of guys like him and Anderson from last night’s walk off winner at the Field of Dreams tilt…

    • chipower9 said, on August 13, 2021 at 12:34 pm

Agree on that OF configuration. Of course, Longo will need a spell occasionally, and KB or Wilmet can fill in.

It is great having Bryant with his ability to play multiple positions, and play all of them pretty damned good…

  14. snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 11:32 am

Went to my doctor this morning.
She described patients in the last few weeks that have refused vaccination, come into the clinic with extreme breathing difficulty, test positive for Covid, are shown their disastrous chest Xrays that clearly explain why they can’t breathe, and still deny directly to the face of the doctor that they have Covid, claiming that it must be something else. She and her colleagues are completely exasperated with these people and frankly want to turn them away from treatment, but can’t ethically, unless there is literally no space to treat them. What are we going to do with this complete idiocy in this country? No good answers. But, she said mask up, vaxx up immediately if you haven’t, and stay away from crowded indoor public spaces as much as practicable; this delta variant is no joke…

    • Winder said, on August 13, 2021 at 11:40 am

That is just crazy to me. I couldn’t get my two shots soon enough. They offer me a 3rd and i will be right there.

The dumbing down of America is totally real.

  15. Flavor said, on August 13, 2021 at 11:49 am

to me, this delta variant is irritating but the next one is the one I’m worried about. I bet that’s the one that no longer responds to the vax

    • Flavor said, on August 13, 2021 at 11:50 am

i should have said “I bet the next one is the one the vax doesn’t protect us from”

      • snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 11:56 am

        Bingo.
These idiots are living petri dishes for the generation of mutant virus — one of the things my doc and I discussed today. Hopefully, the mRNA vaccines’ ability to put in place new mutant virus’ genome sequencing in fairly short order into the vaccine cocktail is a big help in dealing more directly with mutants. I’ve read where both Pfizer and Moderna are working on new delta-specific boosters that will do even better against delta than the current mRNA versions. My MD is particularly peeved at the disinformation that the mRNA technology is new out of the blue, whereas she said the tech has been developed over 15 years and is very well understood…

Yeah, they have been using it for cancer treatments.

  16. snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 12:38 pm

From accounts I’ve read and heard on KNBR, it looks like the Field of Dreams game last night was a real win for baseball. I thought it was great, finally something that MLB got right. Rumor is that next year the Cubs will play there, vs team TBD. Giants unlikely, as they are scheduled to play at Wrigley in September. Cards play in Chicago on August 22-25, so to me the Cubs v. Cards looks likely. Morning show KNBR goofs I thought had a good idea, if the Gyros played there, how cool would it be to have Mays be one of the guys coming out of the corn with the Giants, I think wearing an old Birmingham Barons uni ? IDK if he could even physically do that at his age, but I agree that would be a cool thing…

  17. gianthead said, on August 13, 2021 at 1:13 pm

Has anybody met anyone who was vaccinated and then got covid with the delta variant? I have not but just wondering how prevalent and what was the severity?

    • xoot said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:01 pm

Just this morning a woman at my gym told me that her son’s 80-year-old Indonesian in-laws both contracted the delta variant during the period between their first and second pfizer shots, and that both died. Poor countries (what the talking heads in USA now absurdly call “low and middle-income countries”) are in serious peril, but they comprise most of the world. Didn’t the delta variant develop in India among the unvaxxed billion? There’s no excuse for not flooding every continent with the jabs.

My gym itself went no vax, no service last week, ahead of the government decrees. Very comfortable feeling; the mask does get sweaty, but no big deal. It feels really good to workout again.

      • gianthead said, on August 13, 2021 at 4:17 pm

        Awful

    • chipower9 said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:20 pm

I haven’t, but we all know, even if you are vaccinated, you can get/carry/spread the virus…even though you may not get very sick from it, etc.

  18. chipower9 said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:23 pm

Sounds like Lance will get most of the snaps in the first half of tomorrow’s game, and that he is pushing the competition.

    • Winder said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:29 pm

I just can’t wait to see him in action.

  19. snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:35 pm

No rookie QB has ever taken a team to the Super Bowl, so I’ve read.
So, either there’s no chance Lance could get the Niners there, or “there’s always a first time”…

    • chipower9 said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:45 pm

There’s always qualifiers. But the biggest to me is “if they stay healthy.” If that happens, I think this team absolutely can win the SB. I think they can do it with JG starting the season, and potentially with Lance later. Will be interesting to see the kid in action. I have seen some film…he’s pretty impressive.

  20. snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 2:46 pm

Craw — signs 2-year extension with Giants.
    Reported at $32 million total.
That’s some serious cash at his age.
But, not really a “long term” deal, so that gives the team some protection.
No word yet on an option, etc.
I’m in, I think it’s a little high given his age, but a reasonable approach given his high performance this season.
Luciano should be ready by, if not somewhat before, the end of this renewal…

    • djloo27 said, on August 13, 2021 at 3:52 pm

      Almost $44,000 a day.
      We’re just numb to it…

    • alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2021 at 4:16 pm

Expect the same deal for Buster, and I’m in too. There both retiring as Giants, no question..

      • gianthead said, on August 13, 2021 at 4:20 pm

And they probably throw Belt the same bone. There goes the idea about pursuing Seager….

      • snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 4:43 pm

        Belt, I’m not so sure.
Given his injury history, and the emergence of Wade as an option at 1B, they might low ball Belt, and be willing to let him go if they can get a pick in return for a qualifying offer. Whether they can sign Bryant surely will have a lot to do with Belt’s status…

  21. djloo27 said, on August 13, 2021 at 3:53 pm

    1. Austin Slater (R) CF
    2. Kris Bryant (R) LF
    3. Buster Posey (R) C
    4. Darin Ruf (R) 1B
    5. Wilmer Flores (R) 3B
    6. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
    7. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
    8. Thairo Estrada (R) SS
    9. Anthony DeSclafani (R)

      Interesting LU.
Heavy RHBs with the LHP going. And, a Slater Sighting.
I think KB has started or played in every game he’s been with SF since the trade. Good…

never thought a dude we just paid cash for was ever going to be any good.

  23. James said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:02 pm

Snarkk’s right, Belt’s status is ambiguous largely because of the health concerns and Wade (and Ruf). If his knee doesn’t give out this year and he continues to perform well, the question will be whether or not he’ll accept a lesser contract to stay with the only team he’s played for.

  24. snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:15 pm

I heard Bryant interviewed on KNBR the other day by Tom Tolbert and his crew. Bryant sounded grateful to be with the Gyros, and likes the situation. He didn’t really answer when asked softly about signing long term. He did say his wife was really busy packing up in Chicago. (Bekins?). Of course, Tolbert and gang did not ask a simple question — is she packing up to sell and move here permanently? — which could have tipped about KB’s intentions. But, maybe he wouldn’t have answered anyway. I think the Giants should go hard at Bryant to sign him — he’s still relatively young, and can play 3 positions, if not 4 in a pinch. 3rd, LF, CF, SS; maybe even 1B if needed. Why would he go back to the Cubs? He won’t, they’ll be crap now for several years. Giants have a much better near term future…

    • djloo27 said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:31 pm

Like anyone else, he’ll probably go to the highest bidder.
There’s gonna be competition no doubt…

  25. Flavor said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:45 pm

it amazes me that anyone is behind the “get the old guys paid” comment Z said today. That’s a flat out Sabean move.I don’t have a problem with giving Craw 2 years but goddamn no to Posey and Belt.Belt is only going to continue to get injured as HE ALWAYS DOES and come on fucking Posey? This was the brightest burn before the supernova flashes out. If they want to give him 2 years, ugh, I guess that’s not a death grip or anything. But what is this weird obsession with not being able to let the old guys go? I just don’t get it.

    • snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:57 pm

Wade is 27 and no history of injury, I think.
He can play OF well, and 1B decently OK, and could improve with the leather there.
He’s got years to go until arb. I think at this point, if he shows well the rest of year, he could easily take over the platoon from Belt of playing 1b against RHP, at a fraction of the price. Belt’s salary could be used for starting pitching…

  26. alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:46 pm

Giants will be better off then most teams with a shit load of money coming off the books and yes I’m including Belt with plenty of options to play 1B,plus Z’s brilliant moves on low one year bargain bin specials who have all come through. Yeah they will need to resign Gausman maybe T-Bone, but now with another cheap bargain in Logan Webb’s development, they can easily take on Bryant’s demands.

    • Flavor said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:53 pm

Bryant yes, more old guys, FUCK NO

    • snarkk said, on August 13, 2021 at 6:59 pm

You know that LA will go after Bryant.
Not because they have a clue of where they’d play him (probably anywhere), but just that they can. He has family in Vegas. LA is just a short private jet ride to Vegas…

      • alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2021 at 7:11 pm

I don’t see any big deal in 1 1/2 hour flight to Vegas from SF compared to a half hour. There’s no deal breaker in that..

Belt, Dickerson,Solano, Jackson,Watson,Wood,Cueto,Casali,Brebbia, Beede minors ,who just sucks, cut him loose,GD he is what he is and the Giants know it too.Ruf& Flores still stay experience utility guys any team needs.Slater will stick for his defense and speed and his uncanny ability to hit 460 ft HR’s.
I’m sure there could be others also So fire away on who you all think still stay are go?

    • Flavor said, on August 13, 2021 at 8:34 pm

i don’t have an issue with keeping some of those guys I just think it’s stupid that we should be stroking each other because we signed old ass Crawford or any of our other old players. These guys are more likely to get worse not better or stay the same.

      • djloo27 said, on August 13, 2021 at 9:13 pm

I imagine they’ll buy out Buster for $3M and re-up him for 2 years at Crawford type bucks.
Will be fascinating to see what happens to Cueto and Belt if they go on the open market.
Cueto’s buyout ($5M) ain’t exactly chump change as buyouts go.
Will they extend Kotter before his lame duck 2022?

  40. alleykat69 said, on August 13, 2021 at 8:51 pm
