Leaving The Padres In The Dust

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 27, 2021

How’d you like to be San Diego? Spare no expense at building your team. Make every bold move you can make. And it’s not quite September and you’ve barely got a 20% chance of making the post season. I expect that number to drop significantly in the coming weeks. They are worthless right now. They’ll have a new manager next year guaranteed.

In other news, this Scherzer guy is definitely going to be a problem.

In other other news, let’s play *guess the year*. What year was this picture of me and my dad taken? We were in a Euro airport I think.

i think we’ll just keep the contest open till someone nails the year cold OR game time starts. So far ’79 to ’97 that’s a pretty wild swing fellas

Didn’t the Pads start their rebuild back around 2011?

Talking about rebuilds, I think I was getting slammed by hurricane Irene on this day back in 2011.

  12. willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 8:46 am

If Giants are able to get Bryant a new deal, they would have to vault into territory of being top destination spot for other FAs, no? You can obviously hit HRs here, coaching staff and Kapler can help hitters and pitchers and provide opportunities to play, plus top FO led by Zaidi and Harris have built team with quality farm system as well as playoff contender.

    • gianthead said, on August 27, 2021 at 9:00 am

The only other offensive free agent I was expecting to pursue was a shortstop. But with the two year extension of Crawford that probably forecloses pursuing one. Now what Starling Marte has shown in Oakland I think adding him really changes our lineup to give a whole new dimension. They could go Wade-Marte-Yaz against righties with Bryant playing 1b or 3b and Bryant in LF against lefties. I expect to see Belt back on a similar two year deal. We may need to add another arm to along with re-signing Gausman if that is the right move.

Feel bad for Padres. They had been 7-3 vs. LA before this week and still have bunch of games left with them. Likeable players too other than Machado, who is very skilled IF. Had to be singing Deadline Blues after SF and LA added to talent pool while all they got was Daniel Hudson.
    Heads probably rolling there too.

Downfall for the Padres, going 17-18 against the D-Backs and Rockies that just can’t happen in the NL West and expect to contend. Also not landing a SP they desperately needed with all the injuries to the starting staff..

    • willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 10:08 am

started month August 6-2. Since then 2-12. Scored 5 runs vs. LA in 34 innings.

10 teams in NL have above .500 record at home. Braves aren’t one of them, 31-31.
Giants 41-25 on road, second best only to Brewers 42-21 in NL.

I don’t see anywhere where it’s said whether Solano was vaccinated or not. Solano should say whether he was or not, IMO. If he’s vaccinated and it’s a “break-through” infection then that is important data to know. The whole science world is trying to gather as much information as possible about the virus, and any bit of data is helpful.
If he’s not vaccinated, then, well, I lose some respect for him. He did a reckless dangerous thing if that’s the situation. But maybe he is vaccinated. It would be good to know either way, IMO.

    • djloo27 said, on August 27, 2021 at 4:30 pm

They just said he’s fully vaccinated and it is a “break-through” infection that is forcing him to quarantine in NY for a week. Maybe I’ll give him a call…

talked to Stix again last night. He’s back home in the ice-fishing shack parked in his driveway, but he’s taking things easier now, seeking some other good place to spend the winter. He called in time to hear how Rogers handled the ninth. He mentioned in passing that two friends of his, a married couple he’s known forever, came down with mild cases of covid — mild because they’d both received two moderna jabs earlier in the year.

Number he called from is the same as before: 763-325-7541

Casali apparently was little dizzy on basepaths after taking foul off mask. Tromp is up, Bart btw is on IL for Sac with quad strain. Any further issues with Posey, who was OK to PH yesterday according to Shea, only other Cs would have to come from AA Richmond.

  24. willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 2:28 pm

Couple articles on Gausman and his split problems in second half, including great one from Eno Sarris in Athletic. Spin rate apparently not the issue, more like release point and where he lands (drive) when he throws it. Giants coaches trying to get it fixed, so we’ll see.

  25. willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 2:55 pm

AAA Sac game in Reno was cancelled yesterday due to poor air quality. Obviously, major issue going forward. What about in Sac itself? HS football starting back up here this weekend–hope this can play out.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2021 at 4:15 pm

Slater’s been trying. He’s up there swinging like Dave Kingman on every pitch.

Radio announcer on KNBR is Joe Ritzo, the San Jose annnouncer, along with Randy Wynn. Marginally better than Greenwald. Miller is “on assignment” this weekend . So, are the main announcers now basically blowing off something like every other or every third series? They’re not traveling on the road, just in studio now in SF, so I don’t know why they are “on assignment” so much…

  36. alleykat69 said, on August 27, 2021 at 5:11 pm

When it’s a special assignment even Mr.Phelps gets 10 seconds to decide before the tape self destructs,so he must of decided to abort after realizing who the announcer crew was going to be that this would be an “Impossible Mission”

They can do no wrong, even with 2 feeble attempts to bunt,Gausman gets the 3rd one down and the catcher throws it away at 3rd as Yaz scores..

  40. Macdog said, on August 27, 2021 at 5:37 pm

Has Flemm said anything about why Bryant was taken out? No word why so far from the beat guys.

    • willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 5:49 pm

He just said they haven’t heard yet.

  41. willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 5:43 pm

I can see benefit of bunt with Gausman up but look at what happened to Slater. He hit ball on the ground, couldn’t beat throw and it’s an inning ending GIDP.
The Giants lead league in bombs and have high slugging pct. It’s their approach and what they do. Playing for singles with who they have is dumb.

    • zumiee said, on August 27, 2021 at 6:03 pm

Some players are caught in the crossfire now, though, and it messes up their careers. Guys like Slater, Duggar, and Dubon swinging for the fences all the time like they do; it doesn’t bode well for them being long-term major leaguers. But, I’m sure they’re being encouraged to keep swinging for the fences, because the analytics say that will help the team in the long-term, but not necessarily all the players.

      • zumiee said, on August 27, 2021 at 6:04 pm

By “swinging for the fences,” I mean also trying to pull everything.

      • James said, on August 27, 2021 at 6:12 pm

Slater does not try to pull everything, he goes to the opposite field more than any other Giant. Dubon’s problem is that he’s a stupid hacker who doesn’t lay off pitches out of the zone. Duggar’s OPS is still 783.

  42. djloo27 said, on August 27, 2021 at 6:18 pm

    Slater sucks.
    For those who didn’t know…

  48. willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 7:12 pm

Slater and Duggar are strictly platoon part time players. Slater vs. LHP is .800 OPS guy, but hasn’t homered as Loo said in long time. Duggar got stuck on 7 HRs. both are prone to slumps.
Duggar hit .219 in July then went 1-17 in August=1 HR in 5 weeks. He doesn’t hit well enough to dislodge Dickerson Wade Jr. or Yaz, all of whom have more power.
Next year, especially if Bryant is still here, OF will look much different imo.

  49. willedav said, on August 27, 2021 at 7:15 pm

wow thanks Loo. Bonds HRs live were great, such a presence at plate. Pete Happy, Benito, Felix, J T (much better hitter and fielder than announcer), Cavin Murray (yet another OF that never made it), Nen. Alfonzo and Shinjo as Mets.

10 years to day before that, 1991, Pearl Jam released “Ten” with Jeremy, Alive yada yada.

yeah pen game didn’t work so well. Graterol gave up 2 in first, 2 others gave up HRs too. Dogs lineup to start game had only 1 hitter (Pujols) with OPS below .839 of Chris Taylor, and that was without Muncy (.927) who hit for viejo (old man). Bellinger did come in and play CF for Taylor later. Dogs Wil Smith hit 21st bomb.
      In a losing effort, ha.

Barely could get updates for the game from my phone out in the high desert. Last I heard was 4-2 Giants, 7th inning. Amazingly I picked up the dodger Rockies game and found out through that game that the Dogs had a chance to gain on the Giants. I was like wtf? Damn. Just got to my room to find the Rockies won. Their index of quality air is off the charts horrible because of both the Dixie&Caldor fires converging together.
