A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Thud!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 2, 2021

Can’t hit. Can’t pitch. The eyepopping comebacks from weeks past are no longer. And we are now in second place. It’s a terrible start to a Thursday gents, but at least we have a 13 game lead in the wild card. Now THAT is an eyepopping number!

Was another game that was tough to watch. Wade Jr. just missed one then guys following him couldn’t bring him in, and Brewers got to pen. Kap does seem to still get same handed matchups, that often don’t work out, even with all the platooning. Belt made foolish decision there, and that extra base cost them decisive run.
Brebbia, yuck. Gaus was good enough to keep team in game.

Giants led division for 100 days (!) and it’s taken epic stretch by LA to get past them–21-9 last month and another comeback W last night after both pens blew leads. Braves roughed up 2 guys with HRs after Scherzer left but couldn’t hold lead.

As Pops Stargell used to say, don’t get too down (or up) after each game. Another month of ball still to go.

I can’t remember if it was 2010, but the Giants were 42-42 and Sabean and Bochy had a sit-down with the SPs and basically told them they were better than that. Assuming I didn’t imagine it (possible at 72 these things happen), I would bet a closed door session of a like discussion might have or will occur.
There are good and bad reasons for this mini breakdown but they probably need to be reminded that they are still a competitive team, better than the performance of late and that just being in first for 120 consecutive days was not a fluke.

These games have been tough and the Brewers are playing some pretty good ball. I doubt we can keep up with the stinking Dodgers but it sure would be nice to take that last series. This team still doesn’t give up but our situational hitting has slowed down a bit. I like that Stargell quote that Williedav wrote. Now is not the time to panic.

If you are a glass half full then you would assume we win the division.

  8. willedav said, on September 2, 2021 at 8:03 am

It’s taken LA playing .800 ball, 20-5, to get to this point as Giants have had their worst stretch in 3 months losing 4 in a row. Good outing from Webb and a getaway day W over Brewers ties things up again. Cleaner D would help too. Dodgers end season with Brewers, and face Reds and Cards, both battling it out for WC, this month too. And until Opie or Carrot Top return they are down to 3 man staff plus Price, whom SF faces tomorrow.

Dennis Z I was thinking same thing, wasn’t sure what year it was but remember SPs were in bit of a funk but eventually turned everything around. Though it took Johnny Sanchez to clinch WC spot. Rest was hist.

This is very reminiscent of 1993 and the Crime dog fiasco. We will get in this time though.

Gotta say, the Brewers scare me, a split would be ok but getting 3 off of them would be huge.

Edited version – Gotta say, the Brewers scare me, winning one would be awesome.

  10. unca_chuck said, on September 2, 2021 at 8:38 am

It would be nuts to open the series with the Dogs tied with 28 games left. Ndthe even-keel shit is fine, but SOME emotion? Criminy, these guys looked like zombies as they stumbled and fumbled the game away.

Longo’s absence, 2 weeks now and counting, is killing the team. If he can come back and play, I think we should be OK. But his finger is still hurting apparently. He may be ready tomorrow.

    Torture anyone?

  11. alleykat69 said, on September 2, 2021 at 9:24 am

Giants still had a record of 19-9 in August, any big league team would take that.Bums only picked up 2 games on their torrid streak so theirs that aleast. You come back on a long freaking road trip and have to face Burnes&Woodruff out of the gate that’s a tall order. That last road trip was obvious it gassed this team with wicked weather in the east, hot and humid, now a stretch of 16 straight games without a dayoff brutal and mlb allows 2 freaking callups? This has to change! Trade dead line they got right finally and I applaud them for that most of the action ALL in one day, fast and furious, but now they need to expand rosters around 2 weeks later Aug 15 (32 minimum)are só to account for the DOGDAYS OF SUMMER, so your whole normal roster of 26 doesn’t have to run on fumes and u have some fresh bodies filling in..

    • unca_chuck said, on September 2, 2021 at 9:49 am

And the fucking Braves had 2 days off in a row before our series. That’s majorly fucked up.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 2, 2021 at 9:56 am

      We were 18-5 though.

  12. chipower9 said, on September 2, 2021 at 10:32 am

Yeah, things have gone to hell in a handbasket, but the positive is if we win today, we go into the bum series tied for first.

  13. alleykat69 said, on September 2, 2021 at 10:59 am

Yeah I wanted the Giants to hold back Webb to start against the Bums, but now screw that they have to stop the bleeding and get allitle momentum before facing them.Webb can do that, and don’t pull him early stretch him out he’s their best pitcher right now let him go 8 if possible then bring in a very fresh Cousin McGee to close it out..

  14. chipower9 said, on September 2, 2021 at 10:59 am

Wow – Dubon back in the mix.

    1. Austin Slater (R) RF
    2. Kris Bryant (R) 3B
    3. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    4. Darin Ruf (R) LF
    5. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B

  17. alleykat69 said, on September 2, 2021 at 11:39 am

Wilmer on the IL for a combination of left hamstring pull and sphincter syndrome after that massive shit ripped him a new butt hole.Kapler was extremely upset with the communication breakdown ( Cue Led Zeppelin) on what was going on with Flores before he hastily had to make a move to replace him. There short on infield depth with Longo and now who knows with LaStella again?
Doesn’t bode well forever seeing a GD sighting again, he’s clearly off their radar..

  18. willedav said, on September 2, 2021 at 12:08 pm

well things sometimes happen in platoony ball–Slater vs. RHP, Yaz vs. LHP–that just don’t work out well. Missing a LaStella hurts, but also a steadier fielder like Longoria makes a difference too. Kapler only has so much to work with; Dubon hit well at Sac and maybe he provides some good energy going forward.
I like thairo but again seems like platoon guy only.
It’s tough to hang with so many platoon guys vs. talent gap of LA everyday players…unless pitching holds them off.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 2, 2021 at 12:14 pm

It’s the only way we survive. Solano, Stella, Wilmet, Longo, Wood, Cueto, and assorted relievers are all dinged up.

Pitching match ups for weekend series per Giants website:

    Price vs. TBD
    Urias vs. TBD
    Buehler vs. TBD

    I’m not kidding…

    • snarkk said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:18 pm

According to Kruk, TBD has a fastball at 93-95 that he can command on both corners, a great change-up that’s his out pitch, a decent cutter he throws inside that’s tough on lefties and a show-me “slahder”…

      • djloo27 said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:29 pm

Longest consecutive streak in SF history allowing 2 runs are less is now owned by Logan Webb at 14 straight and hopefully counting. The Giants are 13-1 in his starts.Clearly the #1 pitcher on the staff.

    • snarkk said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:22 pm

I love how all his pitches are low in the zone unless the catcher calls for a high pitch to change the batter’s eye level. If this kid can pitch like
this for 7-8 years, he’s going to make a lot of money. Hopefully he’s off the PEDS …

    • snarkk said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:50 pm

I like that article’s POV on what’s good for baseball. Is it possible or even assured that if SF won the West and LA then took the play in game, that SF would play them in the NLDS, not NLCS? Or vice versa? It would be epic if NLCS…

    • chipower9 said, on September 2, 2021 at 10:03 pm

Nice read. Thanks, Loo. Snarkk – yes. NL club with best record will play WC winner in the NLDS. Other NLDS will be NL 2 seed vs 3 seed.

  72. djloo27 said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:37 pm

Toni Braxton is working on a song about Webb called “Un-Squish My Face”…

  73. willedav said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:40 pm

I think Estes first words top 9 were “McGee in for the save, #30″…and then caught himself when he realized it was no such thing with a 4 run lead. But good for him to shake off some rust and get an inning in.
    which btw, went fine.
Adames ball was well hit, but clearly foul. It’s the right pitch–outside to hardest part of yard for HR by RH. Then he was retired on ground out.
The catch made by Dubon would have “saved” a double at most and more likely only a single. He was playing very deep and had to come way in and to his left to catch the ball–it wasn’t hit hard enough to be a gapper or into triples alley. What you have OFs for.
So bottom line a clean inning/game over 5-1 and using closer in non save situation was not a problem.

    • djloo27 said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:43 pm

      ^Very Twin-like…

    • snarkk said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:55 pm

I don’t trust McGoo, and I know his record. A closer with one pitch IMO is no bueno in the postseason, unless his name is Mariano Rivera …

      • snarkk said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:56 pm

        Or Trevor Hofmann…

      • djloo27 said, on September 2, 2021 at 5:07 pm

        I think there’s others who’ve succeeded.
Sometimes that’s why they become closers.
        Sparky Lyle was all sliders.
        Gossage was all heat.
Even though CF only has the one pitch, he doesn’t seem to be to sure where it’s going,
which might work in his favor…

      • willedav said, on September 2, 2021 at 8:57 pm

It’s worked all season, including today. One harmless single, fly out K and groundout after the single. He’s as successful as anyone has been for a SF in long time.

      • chipower9 said, on September 2, 2021 at 10:06 pm

Results don’t lie. I am not saying it isn’t tortuous at times, but he is our best closing option, IMO.

  74. unca_chuck said, on September 2, 2021 at 4:48 pm
