A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bound to Happen

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 16, 2021

When you’re only working with 3 starters for going on 3 weeks you’re bound to lose games now and again. Well, we lost one last night. It’s really incredibly they were able to rip off 9 wins with all this opener nonsense which I will never support. It only takes ONE of those dudes to be off to torpedo the game. More than one and you’re sunk.

Good time for Gasman to rekindle the magic he had earlier in the season. Being up 2 games sure sounds a lot better than being up only one.

Yes, combine bad pitching and Padres being long overdue for some luck. Q was one I really couldn’t understand–walking light hitting Kim, with curve on 3-2, Then with another light hitter up in Profar he nibbles again and then has to come in with Tatis Jr on deck, throws a meatball and Profar crushes it, for his 4th HR all year. 2 runs that never should have happened.

  2. willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 6:54 am

Krukow was funny talking about Pads reliever Pagan–“ball 6” etc. His fastball was 95 and up. Why are so many pitchers today with that kind of heat unable to throw strikes?

    • Flavor said, on September 16, 2021 at 7:29 am

cause they’re obsessed with the gun. If they threw in a couple MPHs slower they’d throw more strikes

    • Lurker John said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:00 am

They’re overthrowing in the name of velocity. How many hard throwers over the years have finally harnessed their control once they took a little off the fastball. It takes some guys a long time to realize that spotting their pitches is more important than throwing everything as hard as they can. Some dudes never get it.

Koufax would be the most famous example of what you’re describing.
He credits one of the Sherry brothers for suggesting it…

      • djloo27 said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:18 am

It was Norm Sherry, one of the Dodger catchers…

      • Lurker John said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:35 am

Sandy might be the most dramatic example of them all. Holy smokes.

  3. willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 6:57 am

Dearth of SPs (baseball wide issue too) definitely warning sign. Giants Hjelle had decent outing the other night for Sac, giving up 3 runs over 6 innings, but ERA is still in range of 6.00. Other than Kazmir, not much else down there either. imo makes it imperative to hang onto whom they do have, in terms of Gausman and Desclafani.

  4. chipower9 said, on September 16, 2021 at 7:37 am

As I said last night, it is difficult to win games when you give up 9 run (7 earned). The bats did their part (would have been nice to have a runner or two on for some of those solo shots.

To the comments about pitch speed above, I was just reading a good article by Baggs from The Athletic that speaks specifically to pitch speed and throwing strikes. The Giants bullpen excels at it.

One of the key points was that every Giants reliever, sans one, who has thrown at least 20 innings is issuing fewer walks than average. Giants relievers rank first with a 2.75 BB/9.

Their philosophy is “Pound the Zone.” And it works (most of the time). 😉

    • willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 7:47 am

yeah just read that one, really well done and informative. And hey sometimes the plan just doesn’t work and guys like Leone and others just don’t have it and can’t make enough good pitches. Guys they’re facing are trying to hit too.

      • chipower9 said, on September 16, 2021 at 7:58 am

Agree. Yeah, last night things just got away. The error did not help either, but they still gave-up 7 earned. But you cannot argue with the results. Overall, the Giants bullpen has kicked-ass.

  5. Lurker John said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:02 am

I’ve had my fill of these damn “bullpen games.” And yes, I know they’ve done them well lately, but last night is an example what can happen when they don’t work.

    • chipower9 said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:14 am

They have worked more often than not, and unfortunately, they probably are not going away any time soon. When Wood comes back, that will help.

Kap said the other day that given their situation, the BP games are planned, they can sustain it for as long as they need.

      • djloo27 said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:36 am

Baggs says Wood might pitch Saturday vs. Atlanta…

  6. unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:31 am

Kasmir is the only option at this point. And that still leaves one BP spot in the rotation.

    • djloo27 said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:40 am

Have we given up on Sammy Long?

      • Flavor said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:49 am

        i haven’t

      • alleykat69 said, on September 16, 2021 at 9:01 am

Long’s back in Sac on the yo yo train apparently the Giants don’t have much faith in him, are u think he would of got a Spaghetti Leone start, which the Giants went to the well way to often with.

  7. alleykat69 said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:50 am

Kazmir not much of an option either but their out of options like Willied mentioned at this point it’s imperative they resign T-Bone and Gausman the pitching in the farms are along way out.Could Z work his magic wand again and sign some dumpster pitchers again and strike gold? not putting it past him for obvious reasons with a staff around him that really knows how to evaluate talent, but these are 2 quality bull dog pitchers with Voglesong attitude any organization could use, just hope it continues to be the Giants…

    • willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:53 am

funny Kat, every time I see Disco on mound he reminds me of Vogs with that total game face. Man, Mrs. Vogs was something to remember fondly too.

      • alleykat69 said, on September 16, 2021 at 9:08 am

Yeah I would gladly supply the margaritas to have a one on one enchilada sit down with her💃🏻🕺💃🏻🕺🍹🍹

      • chipower9 said, on September 16, 2021 at 9:30 am

Vog’s wife was the bomb, and those chicken enchiladas must have been amazing. I too see the similarities between Vogs and Disco.

      • alleykat69 said, on September 16, 2021 at 10:05 am

With guys like Vogs and Disco it’s not like they have/had overpowering stuff but nobody out competes them with their mental toughness and game faces which makes them winners!!

  8. willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:51 am

Norm Sherry’s name came up the other day, when Romine brothers pitched to each other in Cubs game. It was first time in MLB game since Larry and Norm Sherry, 60 years ago. First WS I ever remember watching was 1959, when Dogs beat Go Go ChiSox of Aparicio and Nellie Fox

No Yaz. No Posey. Great. Ruf and tumble in LF.

    • chipower9 said, on September 16, 2021 at 11:06 am

Well, Kap and crew do a really good job of getting the players their rest and mixing-and-matching the line-up. I really don’t care who the fuck plays as long as we win the damned game. Let’s get this series win.

    • snarkk said, on September 16, 2021 at 11:06 am

Right now, I’ll take Ruf hitting over Yaz…

  15. unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 12:54 pm

Gasman got through the 1st, so that’s a good thing.

  16. unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 12:56 pm

This guy was a Giant? No recollection of him.

  17. unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 1:09 pm

Wow. 49ers lost 3 starters now in that game 1. Greenlaw out 6-8 weeks with a groin injury that needs surgery.

They need to boycott artificial turf games.

    • alleykat69 said, on September 16, 2021 at 1:53 pm

Really unbelievable the amount of injuries the 49ers have endured.Greenlaw is the worst of them all after his dominant game and a pick 6!Curse of Candlestick has risen again, they led all of football with the most players on IR are season ender last year I believe? WTF is going on with this team?
And no greedy owners and NFL won’t Ban artificial turf sadly imo

    • snarkk said, on September 16, 2021 at 2:18 pm

Are other teams as injury stricken, year after year?
Maybe something is wrong in the training room or at practice…

      • unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 2:35 pm

Well, there’s nothing mystical about training. All of these injuries were non-contact near as I can tell. I think between curtailing the 2-a-day practices, less hitting in general, less practice time in general, and you throw in the additional COVID restrictions and you have an increase in injuries across the board.

      • unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 2:46 pm

        And of course, artificial turf.

  18. Macdog said, on September 16, 2021 at 1:41 pm

Whatever became of the Red Rhino?

  24. snarkk said, on September 16, 2021 at 2:51 pm

Current Giants starting pitching vs. current LA starters is no contest.
That’s looking as a critical difference down the stretch…

Wade with the RBI made possible by the wild pitch; thanks Pads.
What should we call Wade — Clutch, Clutchy, Mr. Smooth, or ?…

I vaguely remember Jack Clark doing that at Candlestick, but, being Jack Clark, he got gunned down at 2B by the CF who cleanly fielded the friendly kick back off the wall. Or fence. Been a while.

  51. willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 4:21 pm

Jones is in there, TD Giants. Nice first drive, hope Mac’s NYGs can keep that up.

  57. willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 5:41 pm

WFT first possession they have 3rd and 3, which in today’s NFL is a passing down. Except QB is sacked for 12 yard loss.

  58. alleykat69 said, on September 16, 2021 at 5:48 pm

I have Washington’s Defense apparently they have forgotten how to do that with they’re 4 first round DL draft picks! Doesn’t help with a BS call on Young with his hit on Jones, it’s freaking football refs not touch football..

  59. willedav said, on September 16, 2021 at 7:30 pm

TD Giants. Beautiful throw by Jones, over shoulder grab and both feet in by Slayton.

  60. unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2021 at 8:09 pm

Giants busily shooting themselves in the feet. A false start coming out of a time out, and 2 false starts in a row.

And of course the wide open TD drop.

I’d sure ask him if after the Tetons they took a trip to the western part of Yellowstone. There seems to be a loophole in the 6th Amendment that if he killed her in the small portion of Yellowstone that is part of Idaho and not Wyoming, he could walk. They call that area, The Zone of Death, because a jury from that State and District wouldn’t be possible, so in theory, you could commit any felony crime there.
