Enormous Win
Name a more exciting sacrifice fly in SF Giants history. I’ll wait. The pitcher? In that situation? And how did the lumbering Crawford get home on such an intermediate fly ball? As both my main men in Portland (BD Inc) and Reno (Pasalon) texted at the same time, “even better that it was on Pederson!!!”….
How great is this picture?

Or this one. Two SF Bore-arriors. Uh, sorry I mean WARRIORS. None of this is happening without the Core.

Giants gonna have to make do without McGee for however long he is out. Like him or not he’s been very efficient at what he has had to do. No one else has been prepared to do that.
Leone when he opened game the other day left without getting anyone out iirc.
Watson gave up 4 runs in his last outing in Gausman start vs. Padres.
Anyone else, like Garcia or Doval, hasn’t done it at this level either.
Unfair to dump on Kapler or Z/H for this imo==what they have done to acquire and develop arms this season has worked quite well up to now.
the break is a blessing in disquise. He’s already appeared in 62 games, the most he’s played in since he was a youngster. It couldn’t come at a better time, IMO. Now we just gotta hope the strain doesn’t linger
McGee has been great, especially lately. Pitcher of the month I believe for August, career-high 31 saves so far. Certainly be suited for closing than Rogers, who’s also been very good. Just too much contact for the role, IMO. Very bad timing for McGee’s injury. Hopefully he comes back quickly. It sounded to me like the Giants don’t think it’s any especially severe strain. They’ve been good at exercising caution and it’s kept guys from being out for extended periods of time.
I really like Gausman’s personality. He’s never negative, always talks up others on pitching staff, his catchers and coaches and has sense of humor too. And now he’ll probably claim silver slugger award among pitchers and want to DH next year.
It seems like the whole team is like that, from Zaidi down to the bat boys.
“Well, that’s the first time I’ve pulled a ball in the big leagues.” Gausman after GWRBI.
Gonna look up Doval, but iirc after initial good outing or two when he first came up he got rocked for HRs. Distinctly recall watching a Sac game when he was brought in to close, and he walked the bases loaded, throwing a lot of sliders that missed. Nobody hit him, but they didn’t have to.
Hopefully they can keep coaching him up and really get him to harness his talent.
Losing McGee is a blow, but they look like they can overcome anything.
I guess Kotter will go by committee till someone steps up.
Even Littell could be the guy.
Been real solid since early August…
Littell is another of their intriguing pitchers. It’ll be interesting to see how he responds to the challenges ahead.
Agree, Loo, and Littell definitely has more prototypical closer’s stuff than Rogers. Good command too.
Maybe I’m crazy but I don’t think losing McGee is a big deal. It’s rarely comfortable watching him pitch the ninth. There were a few games where he was throwing 97 on several pitches and was more unhittable, but usually he’s mostly 95 and more hittable.
The Dodgers used him as a 7th inning guy last year, and that seems about right.
well they weren’t going to dump on Jansen. And I’d take McGee over Jansen without question, without even factoring in Dodgers pay Jansen like $20 mil. They also had Treinen, a guy I really like (and wished SF had gotten him when he was available) but whom Giants have knocked around before too.
Agreed
More hittable than 82 mph right out over the plate? Don’t think so. It may not be comfortable watching him at times, but he’s been very good this year.
Last night was first runs Rogers has given up in September. He had 8 scoreless innings, and twice had K’d the side for all 3 outs–vs. Brewers on Sept 2 and vs. Cubs Sept 12. So he is fully capable of striking guys out.
Month of August he was scored on only twice in 14 outings, and as Loo mentioned gave up 1 HR. Hittable? OK, and I get the optics of a Gossage or Aroldis Chapman are more fun to watch, but object of late inning guys is get people out, as in 3 of them in one inning .
And he made Muncy look ridiculous. He’s had some amazing outings.
But last night rattles the nerves. And the Will Smith HR. In the broadcast last night they mentioned the high batting average righties have against him.
Dodgers’ Will Smith, I meant, of course.
Crazy game, crazy finish. This team long ago defied explanation. Whatever it is that makes one team a winner and another team not (je ne sais quoi?), the Giants have it. They desperately needed that win last night and it looked like they were toast after Rogers’ horrible meltdown. But a guy who was on the IL for a couple of weeks, comes back in his first game and hits a game-tying pinch homer with 2 outs in the 9th. And a pitcher wins it with a sac fly in the 11th. Unbelievable.
This one will go down in Giants history, especially if they end up doing what we’re all hoping for. Even if they don’t, it’s been a helluva ride. This season has been something I personally really needed, something positive and fun during a very difficult time. Thank you G-Men.
GO GIANTS!
Awesome post.
Absolutely.
Hang in there J-Bat…
Losing cousin Flav definitely a blow. No matter who closes, someone not as good as him will be in the late inning mix.
Love that team keeps finding ways to win!!!
Damn blown save cost my fantasy team a critical win in my playoffs, as I have Webb. My opponent (its a weekly league similar to FFB) has Scherzer today. Go REDS!!
That game had it all, from Webb pitching another gem,to terrible base running,,great defense ( I still how in the world did Crawford make that play on a ball hit 110 mph?) to Mr.Rodgers getting hammered and blowing the save and probable game and then to watch Donny Barrels just back from his covid death bed with 2 outs and 2 strikes hit a HR to tie it up was just incredible, that type a HR besides a walkoff is te moment a player lives for rounding the bases to as the crowd is going bonkers!
Then u get a pitcher cause their out of hitters, and Kevin Gausman battles pitches all the way to 3-2 and gets something he can put wood on and pulls one just deep enough to get Crawford home( hey u have to go screw it) for a GWRBI from the pitcher who ruled the clubhouse party with Barrels&Craw last night!!
McGee’s ERA is good, but he’s given up 7 HRs which seems like a lot.
Only 2 since the All-Star break. McGee’s been excellent.
Wetteland would do that a lot in ’96 Yankee championship season.
Mariano was his set-up guy before taking over as closer in ’97…
So looking ahead to the PS, barring injury, the following Giants will probably always be in the starting line up against genuine LH starters (not openers):
Belt – Crawford – Posey – Longoria – Bryant – Ruf
So Kotter will have to choose between Wilmet & Barrels at 2B as well as Yaz or Wade in RF.
Does that make sense?
Does McGee in the 9th make me nervous? Yes. Rogers? Absolutely. But so did Wilson (especially Wilson), Romo, Casilla, and anyone else the Giants turned to for a big save. If or when they can find the next Mariano Rivera, or the next MadBum who can go the whole 9 innings, this is what it’s going to be like. Actually, all goddamn relievers make me nervous, no matter what inning.
LOL well said.
McGee won’t be on the staff next year. Book it…
Gotta Disagree Snarkk he signed a 2 year 5 million guaranteed contract good thru 2022 so he’s back..
OMG. I thought none of the pitchers were contracted/controlled coming back except Webb.
Get another closer next year. Put McGoo in for 6-7th inning duty, like LA did. Closers are nothing special until you find one that is…
I agree with all of that, Mac, you said it well; the only difference is that Wilson, Romo, and Casilla could strike-out their way out of trouble. Rogers and McGee not as much.
But I agree with you and Willie, overall they’ve gotten the job done so far.
I think I’m just getting greedy now. Now that the Giants are going to the playoffs, I’m wanting a deep run in the playoffs. Even though just getting to the playoffs this season has been an amazing surprise.
Yeah, the contact guys are a bit more nerve-wracking. I’m with Wille though, just get the 3 outs no matter how it’s done.
I have lost count on how many classic games the Giants have played this year but last night was right up there with the best. I love it that it was against the Braves.
Wood wouldn’t tell Pavlovic whether he had been vaccinated or not, which basically answers the question.
Good thing the broadcasters don’t travel with the team these days.
Slusser asked him straight up. Refused to say.
He’s a Giant so I’m rooting for him, i.e., his laundry, until the season is done. After that, adios …
Agreed
Slusser reported that Wood’s wife also went down with covid at the same time. Wonder how they feel about the Vax UP! sign painted on the grass in front of the visitors’ dugout.
LA beats Reds 5-1 …
No help from the Reds today. Scherzer again.
Pedal to the metal, baby!! No sleep till Brooklyn
Wonder how rhebPads would be doing with Mad Max. Woulda made this pennant run even more nuts
Mad Max is still a bigtime game pitcher, but I doubt Z wanted to give up the farm literally to get him.
Bryant he stole from the Cubs , Canario& Killaeh (sp) could easily be bust!
One thing Z has been great at is these 1-2 year contracts(exception LaStella at 3) but that will have to change on Bryant 4 year’s minimum plus an option likely..
IDK, Kat.
Pretty sure someone (Mets?) is gonna give him at least 7-8 years in excess of $30 million/year.
It’s the going rate now, ain’t it?
Language peeve: Grandparents nowadays who want their grandchildren to call them by nicknames. Mimi and Papa, or whatever. If it happens naturally, fine, but coaching kids into using a nickname is bogus and annoying, in my opinion. I had a Grandma Campbell and a Grandma Johnson. Regarding the Johnsons, we called her Grandma John and him Grandpa John, but that seems more of a natural one to me.
Does Bryant like the Golden Gate Bridge over the Brooklyn Bridge,West Coast over East Coast?
And will it come down to Mrs.Bryant saying I’m not relocating again with the young in’s?
He is a west coast dude growing up and still has a home in Vegas I believe? Oh shit LA is neighbors with Vegas, and with Bellinger eating horse turds daily and Carrot Face Turner getting up there and with Bums seemingly endless money 💰 now I’m getting worried 😟 on that 6-7 year deals.Z won’t do that part, but the money will get insane..
31 of the states now have 50% or more of their people fully vaccinated for Covid-19.
Calif. is now at 58%.
Not that impressed with those numbers, Zum.
Are you?
No.
That all people, including kids.
18+, the CA fully vaccinated rate is 69% overall, per WashPost.
For the 9 Bay Area counties, the 18+ rates are all above 75%, with several at 80% and above.
Solano county is in the 60%s,
that’s barely a Bay Area county.
SoCal and the far north/northeast counties in Drumpfistan are where the refuseniks are, bringing down the state rate…
At a grocery store today I saw a woman wearing a Belt jersey. It makes me want to predict a Belt HR tonight!
Giants released catcher Chadwick Tromp to make room on the 40-man for vaxx-anonymous Wood…
my county of 2.2 million people is well over 80%. I’m guessing this is the highest vaxed county for it’s size in Ca
https://covid19.sccgov.org/dashboards
1. Tommy La Stella (L) 2B
2. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
3. Kris Bryant (R) 3B
4. LaMonte Wade Jr. (L) LF
5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
6. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
7. Curt Casali (R) C
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Alex Wood (R) P
9 outs for Wood.
Not good enough I guess as a quick hook..
I don’t have the giddy anticipation I used to have for Bryant’s ABs.
I’d say he’s been a disappointment…
No big impact.
No great memorable moment.
He’s just been okay…
GD saves the HR – too bad he couldn’t hang on…
Got him.
Casali comes through!
Nice AB Casali.
Think Krukow should be the new tv spokeman for Captain Obvious..
lol
meanwhile, when hardass Alex Wood started an argument in the dugout with Kapler over whether he should sit, Kapler led him down the stairs toward the clubhouse and out of range of the cameras to tell him who makes the decisions.
Kotter’s biceps make the decisions…
I’m sure Mr.Kotter said like “if you were vaxxed like everyone else, vyou wouldn’t have missed 4 turns and i’m taking your stupid ass out now so shut the fuck up and sit down.”
Nice, Chuck !!!!
yeah, that sounds just like Kapler.
Feels like we should be up by a lot more than 2-0.
Morton was pretty lousy…
Wow, Crawford with the leather.
and the arm, again with the arm. great play, again!
Yep, hell of a throw.
Let’s get at least one more run, two would be good.
Craw with another really good play.
I haven’t seen the other SSs in the league much, but I have to think he’s on the short list for another Gold Glove. He’s been awesome with the leather and throws this season…
Shit, he could be MVP. 25 HRs,90 RBIs?
He deserves it every bit as much as Kirk Gibson in ’88…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1988.shtml#NL_MVP_voting
Yep. That was the year Will the thrill shoulda won it.
Oh boy. Here comes Mr Rogers.
At some point Belt deserves a GG.
I’m going to be bummed when he signs with Houston next year.
Padres are so done they can’t sugar coat it anymore, Tingler has loss the club with.8 losses in the last 11 games ? a W/C participant can’t do and your 2 Superstars are bitching? Love the one fans line:Ya all on the same team? Obviously not..
Tingler will be fired the day after the Padres’ season ends. Bochy will likely be offered the job, and I think he’ll take it.
No walks, Sergio
Ut oh it’s spaghettio’s for the save..
Blanko Los Bravos!
Ballgame.
Ballgame!!! A Fistfull of Saves.
Nice briskly-paced game.
Game-ending d’ouble play!
Only 42 minutes for me to figure that out…
Nice DP started by Bryant, whose ops is up around 835. The “Bore Core” is pretty good, too.
Littell gets the win.
SF Giants have the number 1 ranked bullpen in baseball ⚾️ not much to complain about when you lead in that stat..
All the bullpen guys had good stuff tonight. Jackson’s stuff was really moving. Littell struck out somebody on 97 high heat.
The most puzzling City Connect uniform is the Red Sox one with the hideous yellow jerseys.
Mr. Rogers thrives on work…
Top notch pitching and defense tonight, and no HRs, for a 2-0 shutout.
Nice game…
Reporter maybe Shea? Asked Wood how you feeling after this time off with covid and are you vaccinated?
Wood:Yes I’m feeling much better the 6-7 days was dealing with fevers and headaches then things started to plateau and feeling better.Never said a word if he was vaccinated to Shea..hmmm
Maybe he was vaccinated and got sick anyway (like Solano?)
And if he came out and said that, it might discourage people from getting the shot.
Especially those on the fence about it, who might think it’s not worth whatever risk they imagine.
Or the many who have no confidence in anything we do here anymore.
That’s being charitable and kind to him, and I respect that; but he’s not vaccinated.
He said in one of the interviews, regarding being sick with the virus: “I thought this was going to smoke me.”
He has that “I’m shocked at how serious this virus really is” attitude that all the anti-vaxxers have when they catch the virus and get really sick.
Leone took care of biz in the closer role.
Keep running him out there in that role, and see what happens…
watching a few innings of the Sacramento River Cats tonight, I’m amazed by the roster. Baragar, Brebbia, Gott, Hjelle, Kazmir, Menez, Moronta, Bart, Dubon, Thairo, Vosler, Jaylin, Dickerson, Heliot, Sockman.
Menez has the ZZ beard going, but his stats suggest that it’s not time to get the band together again.
What’s their record?
