A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Closing This Out

One up with 12 to go. When you have to win nearly every goddamn game it actually feels like 12 down with one to go. Some way we gotta find a way to hold off LA. San Diego, Colorado, Arizona and then San Diego. Those are all winable games.

I’m going to be in Reno on October 2 with BirdDog and Pasalon and some of my other main men from college. It would be quite sweet if we took down the division on that day….

I was thinking that starting the year on the road looked like a good idea when your last six are at home, then I saw that LA started at home and also has their last six at home. MLB, you bastards!

I’ll be in New Orleans during the playoffs, which will be weird because my whole schedule won’t be based on the games.

    • Bozo said, on September 20, 2021 at 6:41 am

Oops, my bad, the Dodgers also started the season on the road. Still, I’m blaming MLB, you bastards!

Ali’s worth the watch. Soundtrack is pretty good. I had to smile early on when Coltrane’s Giant Steps played for a while.

    • Lurker John said, on September 20, 2021 at 7:25 am

That’s that new series on what, HBO? I saw it in the listings last night. And Coltrane is bad ass.

    • willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:03 am

      definitely a highlight!

    • Bozo said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:45 am

      Yep, I agree.

  3. Lurker John said, on September 20, 2021 at 7:27 am

This shit is gut wrenching. I know they’re already in the playoffs but I really want them to win the division, less because of the one game playoff, and more because they rarely do. Can’t say I have a ton of confidence about that at this point.

    • Flavor said, on September 20, 2021 at 7:32 am

feel like just to much in front of them. 12 games to hold a 1 game lead? VS LA? I’ll remain hopeful because hope is a good thing, but my head tells me we’re done.

  4. alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2021 at 7:37 am

All I can say is Fuck LA!!!!

  5. willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:19 am

Gausman will start Tuesday and with day off today Webb might be moved up too. Pads just got swept in STL amidst dugout dustup. Giants can put nail in their coffin next 3. Pads managed a split up here, winning the Leone Garcia opener and beating Gausman and Watson, but any momentum got crushed immediately.

Giants 13-5 this month after 19-9 August. That’s almost .700 ball they’ve been playing.

Following series is 3 at Coors, where Giants hitters went on rampage.
Meanwhile Buehler did lose again on road to Reds

    • Flavor said, on September 20, 2021 at 9:33 am

Playing .700 ball and giving up ground. You don’t see a problem here?

      • willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 10:01 am

Not with competition in games left, no. Especially getting Wood back and one less pen game .

  6. Macdog said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:25 am

It seems like a good time for a much-needed day off, especially since the bats were quiet the last two games, only runs came on Casali bloop single. They’ve somehow held off the Bums all summer, so yeah, these last two weeks are going to be stressful.

  7. willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:32 am

Watching Ali fights last night as he first won title, no one that big ever moved around the ring or threw punches like that, as a heavyweight. Look forward to seeing the fights btw dispatching Liston (tragic character) and before the Frazier bouts where he just dominated everyone else with speed footwork and elusiveness.

    • Bozo said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:52 am

Liston looked like he brought his face to a knife fight.
I had completely forgotten about that stuff on Liston’s glove that blinded Ali in the 5th round.

      • willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 10:12 am

I remember from listening to fight on radio that it happened, but i thought it was earlier. to actually see it for first time where Liston rubbed his glove in Ali’s face was trip, plus all the blinking and water they splashed on him in the corner.
Hadn’t every seen what Ali did to his face either.

  8. chipower9 said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:48 am

Like the rest of us, I am hopeful. Man, this season has been full of intrigue, suspense, unthought of comeback wins, and torture.

One day and one game at a time. We even share the two off days with the bums rest of the way. They are off today and also next Monday.

I suspect we’ll experience more torture as we wind down these final two weeks. GO GIANTS!

  9. Flavor said, on September 20, 2021 at 9:34 am

As willieD said “playing .700 ball.” ….but losing ground. An ominous sign to be sure

    • willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 10:07 am

Magic # is 12 and it gets less with every W. Throw in a loss by LA as they did vs. Reds, gets even lower.
Giants have better road record than LA too by 4 full games.

  10. djloo27 said, on September 20, 2021 at 10:03 am

I like that Buehler’s been very beatable lately…

  11. unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2021 at 10:11 am

Scherzer is the real fuckarow. He’s been lights out. To force the Dodgers to use him in a play-in game is by far the best scenario. Just keep grinding.

People were getting pissed that the Giants celebrated with the WC playoff clinching, but my thought is that baseball is such a long-ass grind of a season that any opportunity to blow off steam and relax for just a night is crucial to keeping this shit going.

Between this, the excruciating 49er games, and the usual grind that is my life, I’m amazed I haven’t turned to heroin!

  12. snarkk said, on September 20, 2021 at 11:49 am

If Giants get kicked down to the play in game, any chance the Dbacks can loan Bum on a short term basis? He’s pretty good at those…

  13. Flavor said, on September 20, 2021 at 12:04 pm

I’m no math wiz but if you play .700 ball and lose ground, dats bad

  14. Flavor said, on September 20, 2021 at 12:07 pm

good news is, small sample size. And with 12 games anything could happen

  15. chipower9 said, on September 20, 2021 at 12:21 pm

Bums, like us, have six on the road (Colorado and Zona) and then finish at home (SD and Milwaukee). We also share the same days off (today and a week from today).

Going to a crazy run to the finish line. Giants just need to do what they have done for the first 150 games. One game, one day at a time.

    • snarkk said, on September 20, 2021 at 12:28 pm

Brewers will have nothing to play for vs LA.
It will be surprise if the BrewCrew takes even one of three…

      • chipower9 said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:44 pm

        Agree.

  16. alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2021 at 12:22 pm

I watched that Ali/Liston fight everyone had Ali 8/1 underdog and yet as badass prison thug Liston resorting to put lineament on his gloves by his mafia connected corner, shows how badly he was outclassed and definitely outboxed by “The Greatest” from the beginning to resort to nearly having to stop the fight cause Clay could barely see, and was blinking uncontrollably.Loved it when Clay showed up in weigh in with a Bear Hunting jacket on to mock the champs unbearable looks…

    • willedav said, on September 20, 2021 at 1:21 pm

He was just so outrageous and funny. Blew all the sportswriters away. Holding up the fingers for what round he’s gonna take guys out…I remember a Garagiola line after he’d become Ali, “the only way you’re gonna beat him is when he’s facing East.”

  17. Bozo said, on September 20, 2021 at 1:27 pm

While LA added Scherzer the Giants added Bryant, Wood, Belt and Longo. I like our chances finishing this thing out.

    • snarkk said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:10 pm

Don’t forget that LA added Trea Turner.
      Huge add.
LA normally has a better starter at every position over the Giants, except catcher…

      • Bozo said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:29 pm

True, true but I still think we’re looking really good for the stretch.

  18. unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:17 pm

And Betts was hurt most of the first half as well.

    • Bozo said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:31 pm

Mother fuck Betts and John Wayne, we got this.

      • chipower9 said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:46 pm

        LMAO…

      • alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2021 at 3:10 pm

Lol 😂 ..Yeah and I prefer Dicky Betts over Mookie Betts anyday!

      • chipower9 said, on September 20, 2021 at 6:10 pm

Kat – definitely! Dickie Betts over Mookie Fucking Betts.

Here’s Dickie laying down some beautiful acoustic slide…

  19. unca_chuck said, on September 20, 2021 at 2:37 pm

Heh heh!! All about the pitching. If the pitching holds up I like our chances.

  20. alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2021 at 3:06 pm

For Bozo… Looking good Billy Ray, Felling good Lewis!
Lewis…What should we have for lunch? Cracked Crab are Lobster?
    Billy Ray…Why not both?

Jamie Lee tits, the movie gets two stars to start with right there.

Crossword clue this a.m. over coffee: He beat The Greatest in 1971. Well, that’s easy. But nine letters? Ah! SmokinJoe. Worthy adversary, but I think he caught a break taking on The Greatest after he’d had so much down time.

It’s impossible to explain to someone who wasn’t there just what a hero Ali was for everyone who strongly opposed the Viet Nam war (and the draft). A bunch of us students, as many women as men, listened to that fight on the radio. We were bummed at the end. How much did the government take from him? Yet, soon thereafter . . . .

    • djloo27 said, on September 20, 2021 at 4:27 pm

Oscar Bonavena gave them both fits.
      Especially Frazier…

    • snarkk said, on September 20, 2021 at 4:36 pm

Ali treated Frazier like a dog outside the various 3 fights they had, the personal insults were horrendous, and Joe didn’t deserve them. Was it all PR, just a show? From what I’ve read, Joe was not amused at all and never let go of that. They had some sort of semi-rapprochement later in life, I think, but I don’t know the extent or the details. Frazier deserved respect as the champ, regardless of the circumstances he became the champ, with Ali’s absence due to the persecution by the gov’t, that wasn’t Frazier’s doing…

I think Frazier died borderline broke and demented.
I don’t see the point of theses things that come out 50 years after the fact.
There’s no new footage and everyone’s dead.
There’s something out now about the 1986 Mets.
        Just rehashed shit.
The most interesting thing to me is Keith Hernandez opening up about his relationship with his father.
        That is great stuff…

i am too young to remember this shit but what is this bullshit? Was this just for a weekend or something?

  23. djloo27 said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:49 pm

It’s the old Yankee Stadium before the 1973 renovation.
The monuments were in CF like 450 feet from the plate.
A lot of people thought that Ruth and Gehrig were actually buried there…

    • djloo27 said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:51 pm

      They should’ve been…

      • djloo27 said, on September 20, 2021 at 8:57 pm

I think the third one is for manager Joe McCarthy.
        He ain’t buried there either…

Hope you guys are all resting up for your 8 hours of mouse pushing while I drink myself into oblivion on a Monday night with the finest collection of psychotic drunks Brooklyn still has to offer…

Cards opening up lead on last WC spot. Them and LA have some recent playoff history.
