Give Me LA’s Head On A Platter
While there is a part of me that LOVES the post season format giving us essentially a Game 7 tonight I accept how lame this is. This has to change and it sounds like it will in the next CBA: more teams with all first round series’ being three games. If that happens it will limit the bonus of winning one’s division. But whatever, something has to be done about a team winning 106 games and having to burn their best pitcher just to get in–or, what I think is going to happen, they aren’t even going to get in as St. Louis looks tough on Wednesday.
Still, if LA manages to win I will be excited. As Vicki said in Let it Ride, “nothing ventured….nothing ventured.” And while that didn’t make any sense, her sentiment is mine. The risk of getting knocked out by LA pales in comparison, to me, to the glorious excitement of being the team to knock their sorry asses out.
Honestly that would be almost as good as winning a World Series. Think about it. Something SF has never done to them. The closest we came to that was the Joe Morgan bomb in 1982. We still talk about that and that was just one at bat and it wasn’t even the post season.
Knock them out of the playoffs? Oh yes please, I want me some of that….
I still say MLB should go back to the 1 Wild Card winner. The team with the best record that didn’t win a Division faces the team with the best record.
The original intent of the Wild Card was so they didn’t repeat 1993 when the Giants didn’t make the playoffs with 103 wins, and since MLB changed the fix, here we are again.
I know it’s all about the money, but at some point you’d think MLB would try and just fix what’s really broken and not continue to break what is working.
Completely agree, Bozo.
And I doubt it’s all that much of a difference in money.
The Peter Principle proven again…
As long as Dogs are out don’t care how it happens. Used to think same with Yanks or Boston–once they were gone playoffs watchable. Kinda funny one of them exits tonight. But I’m a Cards fan for 1 game tomorrow.
I want a piece of Flodgers Arse on our walls!!!
Again, the fucking Cards are too fucking hot right now and Goldie/Arenado lurk just waiting to launch additional home runs. No idea how good a manager Mike Schildt is, but bring me the head of Dave Rogers!!
Rogers is a known stiff, so I’m going with that.
And it IS cool that one of the Yanks or Red Sox won’t advance. I guarantee, next year the WC play-in game will be 3 games. They have no problem adding games to the playoffs.
Completely on board with that. Bring on the bums. But if its the Cards, then bring their sorry asses on, too.
How do you all think they will shape the roster for this first round? 12 pitchers? 13? Who goes? We must get down to 26 from 28.
Let’s Roll!
As long as Doval and Wade and Craw are on it, I’m good with the rest, whoever they are…
Giants have dispatched Doghairs before in playoffs.
Admittedly, a long time ago, but 1951 and 1962, one of which I was alive for, but oblivious.
So, Joe Morgan ’82 was cool, but not the same.
BTW 107 wins being all time Ws for Giants franchise. Put in perspective, the 1951 Shot Heard Round the World, which seems eons ago, was in the 69th Giants season, even then pretty far along in their history. So, 107 is truly an achievement for the ages. It feels good to have been a Giants fan this long, suffering for most of those 55+ years with a few rays of light here and there, then the glorious 3 in 5 dropped in our laps — and now this epic season. Whatever happens from now on out for October, this season’s been a most memorable ride…
Littell and (hate to say it) Duggar? Cueto showed enough the other day to keep him on the roster. I’d like to keep Duggar as speed in the later innings would be nice. Castro has been balls out so I want him in there. If they go with 12 I’d lose Alvarez and use Garcia as the lefty.
What’s the word on Watson? Is he close at all?
I would drop Dick before I dropped Duggar. Also, who backs-up Craw? Do they roll the dice and basically have Solano as the back-up? Not sure they will add Estrada.
I know I’ve said this 30 times, but I consider the Morgan HR the most overrated moment in Giant history.
Mostly because I wasn’t over us blowing the division in the 2 previous games.
When Ron Pruitt won that game for us earlier in the week, it just seemed like destiny.
It wasn’t. The Morgan homer was a cool moment, but did little to ameliorate my disappointment….
Back then, 20 years removed from the last WS appearance and tired of getting Giants asses kicked by them, taking the Doghairs along with us down the no-playoffs toidy was about as good as it got for Giants fans. I agree, it was a nice moment, but overrated in my orbit of Giants history. Also, I may be speaking a bit of heresy, but I never really got into Joe Morgan much as being a Giant. He made his bones being with the Reds. Bay Area guy, OK, but he was with SF two seasons on his downside; I never think of him when it comes to favorite Giants. Not even close. Plus, his attitude about pulling the ladder up when he got into the HOF really rubbed me the wrong way…
It probably won’t happen, but I’d rather have Estrada on the playoff over Dick, who, as someone pointed out a couple days ago, has done nothing but strikeout of late.
Agree. Dick would definitely be one I dropped.
We currently have 14 pitchers on the current 28 player roster. No way they go 14. 12 or 13…and who goes? Garcia? Littel? I would probably lean Garcia if I had to drop one.
Feels like they’re all only as good as their last outing…
Would the opponent factor into the roster decisions?
Probably, right?
Just noticed that Castro debuted on 9/7.
Doesn’t that make him ineligible for the PS?
he’ll be eligible if he was on the 40-man roster in Aug. I think he was.
Looks like Castro made his debut on 9/7, so per current rules (must be on 40 man roster or 60 day DL at 11:59 on August 31st), it appears he will not be eligible. That sucks, as I really like the kid.
the question is whether he was on the 40-man, not whether he was on the 26-man, I think. All commentary assumes that Castro’s available for the PS. e.g., https://www.mlb.com/news/giants-2021-playoffs-faq
Doval and Castro got added to the 40-man last winter, to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Castro’s eligible for the PS.
I assume that Belt will be off the roster for this round. I’d want Estrada to back up Craw if needed and I agree with Chi, I’d keep Duggar over Dick.
I would rather the Giants face St. Louis. The Giants have had lots of success against them in the playoffs, including Wainwright, in the last 20 years. I know that just about all of the players are different, but I get a better feeling about facing the Cards in the playoffs than the Dodgers.
I still think LA has most talent going in of any team in entire playoffs. Getting them out of the way is a boon to Giants hopes of winning WS.
I just think we match up better with LA than StL.
Great to see Flap guys headed to yard for playoff games, very cool. Place should be rockin, and hopefully even if LA is there not near as many of their fans as were here earlier.
Trying to park in the City was problem 20 years ago, and goes back long ways in some areas . Not surprised anywhere near the O is gonna cost you especially given Giants development plans in the area
When I went down and met Mac, Flav, and Sarge, I parked my car at the Marriott (spent the night there). Fucking $72 to park my truck in their valet lot.
wow that sucks.
Great article in Athletic about Giants pen, how good it has been, and how it has been put together by FO and coaches. They even identified guys who potentially would be impacted by spider tack ban as to who they added. 6 different guys threw more than 50 innings and had ERAs of less than 3.00. Rogers btw had 2nd lowest.
And yet they had 4th fewest Ks, but best K/BB rate because they walked so many fewer.
Ahhh, didn’t see Dick. Yes, no Dick please.
That’s what she said…
To you
LOL…
βChicks might dig the long ball, but they donβt prefer a Limp Dick!β
Right now there carrying 14 pitchers, way to many imo
Jackson will be one dropped, and I donβt see a need for Shimmy atleast in the 1st rd.
But then I donβt see a need for Dickerson, and would rather have a true backup SS in Estrada added.
So I would drop Jackson,Dickerson, and Shimmy(Woodβs a no brainer over Johnny) and keep Estrada for your 26 man roster and better bench strength and more versatility. GD and Slater make it for their speed in the Outfield they will need late in gamesβ¦
Littell is a home run magnet. He and Dick go.
See Littell Dick go . . .
It’s a shame, cause when he’s on, he looks unhittable…
Littell is one of the 6 with ERA under 3.00 who pitched over 50 innings. 63 IP ERA 2.92. Did give up 7 bombs and walked lot of guys, 3.3. WHIP was 1.135 K’d 9.2 a game.
Had a bad stretch where he got sent down iirc, to rejoin band mate—Menez, was it? Now that guy sucked.
Cueto would be the pen guy, not a starter. I can guarantee you he will be on the roster. I’d have Woody, Spiderman, Gasman, and DeScaffolding as the starters. Pen would be Shimmy, Castro Street, Garcia, Leone, (gulp) Mr. Rogers, Doval, Magoo, and Alvarez. I would like to see Estrada up as well. When do they have to set the lineup?
Mr. Ed has played 162 games at SS.
Never as a Giant!
I had to wrack what’s left of my brain to remember that Dubon was Craw’s back-up pre-Thyroid…
Reminds me of a story we had to read in junior high, as it was called: βBring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.β No idea who the author was. All good points, Magnus, though Iβd HATE to lose to the Doggerels. Speaking of doggerel, hereβs my latest at Bardball.com: http://bardball.com/2021/10/04/ever-and-anon/
Somehow pawliekokonuts is being overtaken by spindox, but it’s Pawlie.
Ah. I feel better with my nom de plume d’Internet restored, enhanced by proper initial caps and a space between first and last names.
If ever there was a crying need for a book, I think you are the man to write about this season, Pawlie!!!
Heh, thanks, Chuck. I’m not sure I have it in me. Pretty sure I do not. Then again, I said the same to my friend Denis in 2011 when he suggested a book, and the result was BASEBALL’S STARRY NIGHT.
Funny, I’ve been moving a bunch of stuff around and I found that book. Rereading it at this appropriate time
lol thanks for confirming who this Spindox character really is.
indeed.
Amen
I think deadline for SF roster is 12 noon Friday.
thx
Another bomb off Cole. Sox hold on, he’ll be home before his brother in law will.
Rizzo says not quite yet with a bomb and now a Judge infield hit chases Edovaldi who was lights out..
Wow Stanton misses a HR by a foot then Judge is nailed at the plate, canβt believe they sent him huge mistake..
Bogaerts nailed him at plate with great throw. Plus he’s got 2 run bomb. Helluva player.
Nevin had a Wotus moment and screwed up bigtime!
Craazy Sox Yanks game. Stanton hits one off the Monster and Judge gets nailed at home trying to score from 1st.
Stanton singled off the monster earlier, a shot that looked like homer off the bat.
Fuck. We have Angel (seeing eye) Hernandez as part of the NLDS umpiring crew.
If you think LA has the most talent (as i do) of the teams we could play, then playing them in a shorter series is best. If we beat Buehler Or Scherzer once we can and will win the series. To do it again in a 7 game series is harder. Hope it’s the Cards, but if LA then lets kick there ass early!
I agree with sending judge. Aggressive baseball is always best. Took a perfect play form Hernandez to scoop and fire, and a perfect relay. How many times have we been mad that we had 2nd & 3rd with one out and the 9th guy up???
Angel will be behind the plate in Game 2. Fuck.
Interesting stat. $ amount, in millions, paid per victory for the playoff teams.
1) LAD- 2.52
2) NYY- 2.21
3) HOU- 2.04
4) BOS- 2.0
5) STL- 1.82
6) TOR- 1.65
7) ATL- 1.65
8) CHW- 1.52
9) SFG- 1.37
10) MIL- 1.02
11) TBR- 0.71(!)
No use fretting over who we get as it is out of our control. Either one will be tough. But beating the Dodgers would be fucking excellent. StL. scares me more than LA as they are on fire. The Dogs starters are getting beat up lately.
So, yes, I’m fretting.
Took me this long to realize Arroyo is on the Red Sox?
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/dodgers-will-clayton-kershaw-max-muncy-play-this-postseason/ar-AAPb7eP?ocid=msedgntp
Not looking good for Giants-Yanks WS.
Yeah, guess I’ll have to go somewhere else to get beaten to death…
lol!!!
Giants Boston would be cool. The Rays are fucking insane.
Since I feel Farhan built the Giants using Tampa Bay’s philosophy on building a solid organization top to bottom that would be great to see that Giants/Rays go at it. Yeah the Rays are a damm solid team pitching/ hitters but the Giants have the wow factor going too, that would be a great matchup..
And a TV ratings nightmare…
Yeah you kiss off the Yanks there toast!
As might be Boone..
Can someone tell A-Rod that Gallo’s first name is Joey, not Joy?
Stanton hammers another one but it ain’t gonna be enough. He got 500 ABs this year, good for him.
Cole gonna get crucified here…
He came up “ant small” as Flavor would say…
Boone gone Loo? Take Nevin with him !
And yes Cole (324 million bust in the clutch)will be taken out on a ordered hit in NY..
Nevin was heavily rumored to replace Bochy, I believe…
Another guy who really needs to go…
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/john-sterling-completely-botched-his-giancarlo-stanton-call/ar-AAPaT6D?ocid=msedgntp
Now THAT was horribly embarrassing….
And he was at the game, so no excuse other than he’s over 80 and doesn’t see the ball well anymore.
Step aside and give someone else a chance…
Also embarrassing that Stanton got only a single on that. Hot dog …..
OMG that was embarrassing!
What did I do wrong? Uhh heβs on first base lol π
Why do I feel this could happen to Kuiper soon?
He hit high he hits in far he hits it outta here for a long single..
I think Kuip is pretty slow and careful with those.
A lot of times it seems like he’s the last one to know…
Yeah John and Loo, a Yanks-Giants WS would’ve been great. Woulda loved to see a photo of current Giants standing next to the plaque where the Polo Grounds once stood, checking out their “roots”. Guess there’s not much to see there now, but still…
Yanks getting eliminated, though, is always a fun watch.
Agree. π And my old Boston days come into play, despite NY being my early childhood team.
