A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Watching Teams Step Up While Ours Lay Down

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 19, 2021

Well, the Giants are eliminated and there are Boston fans out there celebrating their part time #9 hitter (Arroyo) as a legend. Seriously, is there a dumber home run celebration in history than the laundry cart through the dugout thing? That got played out after one time. And those dopes do it every single time. That’s enough to have me rooting firmly against the Red Sox.

Still, to their credit they should be noticed for their prodigious power this post season. This time of year you need the sticks on fire and they’ve certainly done that. Their TEAM OPS is .941. Ours was .513.

Our season wasn’t determined by some blind wayward ump. We choked at the plate. There’s no other way to say it.

Arroyo as legend, lol. He’s played 142 games in his 5 year ML career, and the 57 for Sox in 2021 is career high. Arroyo played 15 games total last year. 6 bombs in 164 ABs.
Fenway has always been premier hitters park. Sox scored 829 runs as team, good for 4th in A.
Surprised to see Arroyo is only 26. Looking at Sox roster, other than 2 Cs and Martinez, rest of regulars all under 30.

“We choked at plate” is fair take to describe what happened in last 4 games. In first one SF hit 2 bombs off Buehler and another off Dogs pen guy for 4-0 W.
What happened over last 4 games is not gonna change or override what hitters did over 162 previous games and 6 months of dang good baseball for me.

it is the reason they are out of the post season. You put too much emphasis on 162. The money games are made in the playoffs. Those count more, right?

      • willedav said, on October 19, 2021 at 7:59 am

Not arguing with that first sentence but I put way less emphasis on small sample size to judge accomplishments of team this year. And look at talent level of who they were facing for a sec pls. At some point every one of the teams good enough to be in playoffs are gonna lose except WS winner. Doesn’t signify they suck or are bunch of heimlichs.

  3. willedav said, on October 19, 2021 at 7:52 am

wow Hal signed Boone to 3 more years plus option for 4th. Gotta light up sports talk airwaves in Apple.
October 18 in 1977 was day Reggie hit 3 bombs in 3 swings 6th game of WS.

I will say one thing about the Sox home run celebration…it shows how tight their team has become and I am a believer as stated before that I believe such teams as our Hunter Pence demonstrated with his vocal leadership that teams that are tightly knit and playing with emotion are dangerous in playoff series. Let’s continue to hope Flodgers continue their falling apart.

My only issue with the Red Sox is that Cora should have been banned from MLB for at least 10 years for the Astros cheating fraud, of which by all reports he was the ringleader. And his ’18 Red Sox also engaged in some kind of electronic cheating, but we don’t know the full range because there hasn’t been a whistleblower in that situation like there was regarding the ’17 Astros. Without the Astros whistleblower, we may have never known about the ’17 Astros fraud and the ’18 Red Sox fraud.
Cora’s entire penalty for all of that was to have to sit out the ’20 mini-season. That was all. Ridiculous. The Commissioner is so pleased with himself that he made the scandals “all go away.”
Given all the crimes corporations and political leaders get away with in the U.S., I guess it was to be expected.

“We had a great year and we had a lot to be proud of.” Zaidi quoted by Baggs.
Great column in Athletic–Baggs says they will try to bring back Posey and Belt and hopefully some of the SPs, and finding more SPs high priority. Seems sure Bryant not how they spend remaining $$..

  7. chipower9 said, on October 19, 2021 at 10:30 am

I read the same article that WillieD alludes to. They will either accept Posey’s option or renegotiate a multi-year deal.

Belt is a priority and Zaidi says the are evaluating whether or not to make him a qualifying offer, or not, but either way they go, signing Belt is a priority.

They cannot make a qualifying offer to Gausman. But will work to bring him, Disco and Wood back. Sounds like they will do the 5m buyout on Cueto.

As WillieD said, SP will be the priority.

Bryant is not a priority. They will have conversations with him, but again, he is not a top priority.

Zaidi, in another article spoke to there is always 29 teams that come up short. Does not mean our team sucked. They had a great year and will try to bring back as much of the roster as possible.

He also mentioned that the bums and our team were very even, but the bums just did a few more of the little things that make a big difference.

Going to be an interesting off-season and I cannot wait for 2022. The future looks bright…gonna need my shades.

Only 121 days until pitchers and catchers report.

    Go Braves…

  8. chipower9 said, on October 19, 2021 at 10:33 am

A bit more on the status of our club. Giants owe guaranteed contract to only four players: Longo, LaStella, McGee and Craw. Those total 41.4 mil.

Fully expect to pick-up Wilmer and Alvarez options at 3.5 and 1.5 mil, respectively.

With that said, if they bring back Posey, Belt and Gausman they still have a big chunk of change with which to work.

  9. snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 10:44 am

Superior LA pitching did the choking for the Giants.
It’s not the same as ripping shots off of retread and newbie Dbacks and Rocks hurlers. The inability to make contact at all, let alone in RISP situations, was a problem all year, if you can call it a problem on a team with 107 wins.
But, that lack of contact and reliance on HRs to score can bite you in the ass in the post season, which it did…

    • unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 11:32 am

That being said, the approach they took to getting deep into counts was very effective. It just didn’t work in this playoff series. For whatever reason. But Baggarly posted something yesterday about how the Giants as a team were worried about the umps assigned to this playoff series (nee: Hernandez, Angel; Eddings, Doug). They are not very good at balls and strikes, and that they’d have to adjust to the inconsistencies.

Bryant’s AB in game 5 was the most troublesome as he took balls 4 and 5 before striking out on a low pitch. 2 on, and 0 out is a big difference compared to one on one out.

  10. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 10:46 am

The team needs more speed in a big way. Need a true CF/lead off guy. Looks like one more year of waiting for Zaidi’s guys to make their way through the ranks, so we’ll prolly get another year like this one of 1/2 year guys.

Why not Starling Marte in CF? Sure he’s 33 but he’s fast, Leads off, and plays a mean CF. I’d take him over Bryant at this point as Bryant will break the bank. Keep Wood and DeScaffolding. Buy-out for Johnny B Questionable. Gasman is a mirage. Find another couple guys to give a one year deal to. We have enough pen guys to put together a solid group.

Bring up Estrada, Dubon, and Jaylin Davis. Yaz can hit the bench, keep Wilmet, Donnie can walk, Dick can shrivel up and blow, Ruf is a solid bat off the bench. Would love to see Shorto jettisoned but we’ll see what happens there. He was doing pretty good before the latest injury.

Belt and Posey get their 2 year deals.

This team needs to be younger and faster

    • snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 12:18 pm

Agree with pretty much all of that, except Wood can shove off.
      Well done !…

      • chipower9 said, on October 19, 2021 at 12:51 pm

And why exactly should Wood shove off? He had better numbers than Disco:

        2021 postseason: 4.2 IP, 4 Ks, 0.86 WHIP.

2021: 26 games, 10-4, 3.83 ERA, 138 IP, 152 Ks, 1.18 WHIP. Looking at those numbers I have no clue why you say he should ship off. I would bring him back in a heartbeat.

      • snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:22 pm

I’ve banished him for being a nonteam player, not getting vaxxed and stressing the staff for two weeks while he was out…

  11. sandog said, on October 19, 2021 at 11:35 am

That ump didn’t lose us the series, but he absolutely ruined the end of that game.  I have not watched a second of the playoffs or any highlights since, and don’t see that changing anytime soon.
It’s gonna take me a while to let this go.

  12. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 12:24 pm

Bryant was pretty pissed about the walk he wasn’t issued, and Posey was pretty much furious the whole series as the calls were all over the place and he was front and center. Urias was getting a LOT of calls off the plate. I certainly get that they get completely out of sorts because there is no way to judge balls and strikes as a hitter when it is basically random.

My bone of contention is why the fuck Eddings and Angel are even GIVEN playoff assignments. Again, it smacks of the 2002 NBA western conference game 6 fiasco. Put umps in place to tilt the outcome. Sure, we could have hit the ball better, but you give the other team better opportunities and there you go.

    • snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 12:27 pm

Where pitching is strong and runs are at a premium, as in most post-season games, the vagaries of the home plate ump are particularly impactful on the outcomes. Those strike-called calls on Bryant were huge blockers to the Giants developing a threat. And in the 9th, Scherzer got a couple of called strikes on Wade that looked way high and outside, including the called strike 3…

I am never comfortable with pinning a loss on poor officiating. Not in any sport. That coulda woulda shoulda wears me out. So, yes, I agree. Doing so merely masks the reality of deficits, weaknesses, missed chances. Somebody had to lose that game. And it was going to hurt. It does, and will — for how long I don’t know. But I’m a big boy. I’ve heard that broken record before, the heartbreak song in a dive bar. Debating the lyrics or chords or notes of that song couldn’t be more tiresome to me. No more replays, not for me. Besides, the sweetest balm for all that has a simple name: “3in5.”

My final take is right here: http://bardball.com/2021/10/19/post-scriptum-october-version/

    Period full stop.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:29 pm

I keep bringing up the 2002 western conference finals because that game was proven to be a fix by the refs.

Having 2 of the worst balls-and-strikes umps in this scenario smacks of the doing the same kind of thing. Wanting to affect the outcome. Sure, the bats were quiet, but given a different strike zone that the opponent tilts the outcome, however slight.

  14. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:12 pm

0.68 is a pretty big discrepancy.

    Game 5

    • Macdog said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:20 pm

It should be noted that Worst Missed Call #3, Craw ended up striking out anyway, so no harm to the Dodgers. Yeah, that Bryant AB still pisses me off, too.

  15. snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:24 pm

Farhan sounded yesterday like Bryant’s not necessarily coming back…

    • unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:27 pm

He ain’t worth whatever he gets.

    • snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:30 pm

I really expected more than he provided.
      Expectations too high, I suppose…

      • unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 4:50 pm

The errors were problematic. Way too many

  16. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:26 pm

Game 2 was supposedly pretty even, evenly bad by Angel, but a missed strike 3 call from Leone to Taylor started the 4 run avalanche.

  17. willedav said, on October 19, 2021 at 1:38 pm

OK let’s say Bryant goes elsewhere for whatever someone agrees to pay him.
tell me who the best hitter left is in entire OF.

  18. zumiee said, on October 19, 2021 at 2:58 pm

And fortunately only one more season of Longoria. He had a few moments for the Giants this season, and he had a big HR in the playoffs; but he also went 2-17 in the playoffs, and he has many games nowadays where he looks overmatched against pitchers.

  19. zumiee said, on October 19, 2021 at 3:00 pm

Morton has walked 4 Dodgers in the first 2 innings. Yeah, that’s going to work.

  20. snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 4:19 pm

    Braves hitting.
    Up 5-2 in the 5th…

  21. djloo27 said, on October 19, 2021 at 4:21 pm

Show some balls and dump fuckin Longoria.
    And fuck Bryant, too.
I don’t care if he can play goalie and QB.
And absolutely get some fuckin athletes on this team.
The sun will burn out before they win 107 games again.
    Yes, it was a fluke…

    • Winder said, on October 19, 2021 at 4:56 pm

yeah, the only reason we won 107 games was because AZ, Col, and SD played some crap baseball this year. It was pretty amazing sweeping the Rockies at their house though.

  22. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 4:46 pm

Yep. And yep. I’d love Marte. CF, leadoff, decent power, speed.

    • willedav said, on October 19, 2021 at 6:58 pm

Streaky player for a few years who suddenly goes off in contract year. And he is 33 right now so SF wouldn’t be getting younger either.

  23. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 4:47 pm

Buehler crushed in 3.2. We woulda been hard-pressed to beat these guys.

    But you never know. Having Webmeister in 1, 4, and 7 . . .

  24. Giant Head said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:08 pm

I literally got home and the first play as I turn the tv was Liz dropping the ball and now fuckhead Flodgers are complaining about umpires calls on the strike zone, that is rich!!!

  25. snarkk said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:23 pm

Looks like the Giants took a lot out of LA in that series…

    • willedav said, on October 19, 2021 at 7:00 pm

Not quite enough. Buehler looking vulnerable though.

  26. Giant Head said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:31 pm

I was very surprised by Farhan’s comments on KB. Could be a negotiating tactic. I like Marte to bring in a CF and lead off but I can also see Semien. Seager May have lost some luster.

  27. alleykat69 said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:49 pm

Well in less Seager agrees to play 2B theirs really no need with Crawford set for 2 more years at SS.You still have LaStella ,Flores,Estrada to man it since I think Barrels will be gone.Doubt Seager has the arm strength to play 3rd as well..

Lol typical Dogpile fans bailing out early to the freeway as they’re done after this loss and I love it!!

  28. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:55 pm

    Fucking dogs .. . .

  29. alleykat69 said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:56 pm

Guess those loser fans that left early are pissed now.Bellinger just tied it up 5-5 on a 3 run bomb..

    • unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 6:47 pm

When they tell the story, they didn’t leave.

  30. unca_chuck said, on October 19, 2021 at 5:57 pm

The fucking Turner/Scherzer trade is very reminiscent of the Crime dog trade. Both killed us.

  31. Macdog said, on October 19, 2021 at 6:51 pm

    Arroyo triple. The legend grows.

  32. Buck Hopper said, on October 20, 2021 at 10:09 pm

Dump Dickerson, He must have struck out the last 20 times he was at bat. Too much lefty against lefty. Give Slater a real chance instead of using him as a pinch hitter every 4 or 5 games.
