LA Is Getting Destroyed LOL
After we struggled so mightily to score against LA (5 runs in 5 games) it’s really astounding and almost refreshing to watch a team pummel them like this. I think it’s clear now that our 107 wins, while legit, were a little over inflated due to inferior competition, specifically in the NL West. Winder noted that in yesterday’s thread and he was right. That isn’t devaluing what the Giants did this year, it was incredible and I’ll never forget this season. But watching the Braves mash the ball all over the yard you have to just sit back and appreciate it, almost with a touch of envy…..
And these Braves bats probably would have taken advantage of our pitching as well. And doing all this without Acuna especially but also Ozuna not being n the lineup has caught be by surprise. Thought the Brewers pitching was going to shut them down. Glad I did not bet on them or Giants making the WS. Was thinking about taking both with the Astros. Go DUSTY!!!
disagree on season win total being devalued. AZ was weak team yes, but Giants played LA dead even all year, 12-12 including playoffs. Braves were in weak division themselves, with Nats Marlins Mets and Phils.
What has happened to LA is their pitching has finally wore out and ATL does have lot of power, especially on IF.
Again, the small sample size of few playoff games does not diminish what happened over entire season–completely invalid argument you would never use if a hitter got hot or cold for a week to define his value.
When Jimmy G overthrew a wide open E-Sanders in the SB I declared him to never be *the guy* we need to win it all. In fact I called for him to be replaced that day or very soon after over at Chuck’s blog. I caught a lot of shit for that comment and oops look what happened I was right. Same thing with these Giants hitters. Small sample size, fine. But when the lights shine the brightest you HAVE to step up. Nobody cares that you can beat up on shitty teams if you can’t do it when it matters the most.
Look you have your own take, I disagree that what happened in playoffs matters the most of anything in terms of hitting and pitching and overrides everything else. Giants beat good teams and bad ones all through season. SB (one game) take is irrelevant to baseball playoffs that require more depth over longer term.
You could also apply your argument to Dodgers–guys like Trea Turner and few others were awful vs. Giants. Does that mean they suck? pls. Urias Buehler Scherzer are burnt out. Does not mean they suck either and this is true of many very fine ballplayers over history, as Loo pointed out few threads ago.
Reverse is true too–Pablo shone in playoffs, but he’s not going into HOF, Posey is.
Urias does suck it!!!
Giants record vs. teams over .500 during the season was 35-28.
Dodgers 35-27.
Braves 31-37.
Brewers 32-36.
Winning wasn’t a fluke.
never said it was a fluke. Read. Said their win total was overinflated. A team that wins 107 games should score more than 5 runs in 5 games when it counts. Agreed?
NO I just don’t buy your “when it counts” premise is all that matters. Good pitching stops good hitting, and always has for 100 years of baseball. Why it matters even more in playoffs and that’s what did SF in.
Dodgers had good pitching all year. Each playoff has its own dynamic and Roberts lack of trust in his staff has caused him to overuse guys that are only now, after 6 months of baseball, getting beat.
so you put zero blame on our hitters. Got it. Weird take but I got it.
HLBD, Juan! Saw him pitch at Wrigley as a kid in ’68 and a few times at the Stick. Great game. 26-9 2.43 era in ’68 and didn’t get any CY Young votes that year.
The team needs to get younger. I mean the bore core will stay, minus Belt, but Donnie, Shorto, Yaz, Cueto, and Dick need to go. Still pissed they put Dick on the roster as opposed to Estrada.
agreed.
btw if the Dodgers pitching is so spectacular, so good they can basically shut down a 107 win team, then how do you explain why ATl is pummeling their pitching staff right now?
I think their chasing us all season long has something to do with their failing now. They pitched Sherzer and Buehler on short rest. Urias? Don’t know, but we were hitting a lot of hard outs in his games.
Charlie – Agree on the Estrada/Dick comment. I don’t think Yaz is going anywhere, though. Cueto will be bought-out on his 5 mil option.
And Zaidi as recently as a few days ago said Belt is a priority to resign. So I will be very surprised if he is not on the team next year (if he is not, it will be because HE chose to go elsewhere).
Team does need to get younger, but as mentioned over the past several days, Zaidi has said they will try to bring a big chunk of this year’s squad back, so the youth resurgence is at least a year away.
SP will be the priority.
I don’t believe our win total was over-inflated (we all have our opinions…and that is mine). I think what the team did over that 107 wins was totally legit.
Hitters and pitchers can be streaky…especially hitters. In a short 5 game series, if you have a couple of key guys go cold, then it is tough. Sure, we went cold at the wrong time, but that is a part of the game.
We battled the bums toe-to-toe right down to the final inning of game 5. I am proud of what this team accomplished, even though they came-up short, and am I am as excited as hell for next year. The future is truly bright.
Only 120 days until pitchers and catchers report.
If they come to a collective bargaining agreement. Not sold yet that they will be early Dec.
Still say they need to work out a deal with Bryant.Last I looked he was leading the team in hitting against the Dodgers at .471 so nobody can say he wasn’t ready to hit against them. And yes they need to get younger, funny that Bryant is the youngster at 29 in the starting LU (excluding Wade PT) and most here want him to walk? I still don’t get that.. Maybe another team comes at him with a blank check maybe not,Farhan can play a poker face with the best of them and maybe Bryant does too when he says :I have the final word not my agent:
Just saying 30HR 100RBI’s guys that play multiple positions don’t grow on trees. And stop whining about the money, this organization is loaded, it’s the years Z/H would like to keep at 3-4 year range..
I speculated late in season that it will likely take 6 years $150 million to land KB and who votes for that? Mets will be in that range. I still say yes at those numbers but could go higher than I am out.
I’d take him at that price, but I think he’s gonna do way better than that…
The players that have bought into the program will be offered contracts the players that didn’t, won’t be. So contract offers to Belt, Posey and even Cueto will depend on that and not the $s (years may be a problem). Even with a QO, I think Belt tests the FA market. Posey could retire if he doesn’t like the “Player Coach” angle they’ll probably ask of him, hard to say if Cueto bought into the program. Don’t know how hot they’ll be on Bryant, he may just want to go back to Chicago anyway. They will probably offer a lot of minor league contracts for bench guys, Yaz is arb eligible I think, so that’ll be interesting. Bart gets his shot unless they trade him. They spent a lot of dough for Wilson so I figure he’ll be fast tracked.
Do top level pitchers still want to come to SF, or will it be just more reclamation projects?
The Giants outdid all predictions in the regular season and gave us some pretty entertaining ball games, but are the players happy to just be going home with a Division Champ tee shirt? I doubt it.
I made the argument most of the year that this Giants team was not even among the Top 10 best Giants teams since the late 70s. So how the hell did they win 107 games??? Same as Flodgers winning 106. Not out of greatness but overall mediocrity in baseball IMO. We had great Giants teams in the last 40 years and they often would likely go .500 on the road we were 53-28 this year. That is ridiculous being 15 games over and not because we were the ‘27 Yanks or even the 2002 Giants. We could have won Game 5 but realistic to think we would hold off the Braves or I hope the Astros being the AL Champ.
Not 15 games over 25!
Not realistic to think we would beat the Braves. Sorry for that typo
If Webb stayed hot, he’d have games 1, 4, and 7.
No one is bloody signing Brandon Belt as a free agent. He has likely been available to be traded last 2-3 years and no one and I mean no one came knocking. He will be lucky to get the one year offer from us.
If you read The Athletic, and quotes from Farhan (direct quotes), he said Belt is a priority. They are debating going with a qualifying offer or contract. Not blowing smoke up anyone’s ass, just passing along quotes from the man calling the shots.
“likely available”. If he was truly available, I doubt it was this year and you have no clue what the Giants would have been asking for him in the past (plus he’s had a limited trade contract).
I’m 100% sure Posey is back. This year was a revelation to him and one more solid year cements his status as a hall of famer. He ain’t gonna turn his back on $22 mill.
Belt? Why not? 2 year deal. Maybe he’s got one more clean year left. He and Crawfish can sail off into the sunset together after 2023.
I was not trying to overinflate our 107 wins. I just think if we played in any other division I doubt we would have reached 107. I think GH is right about the mediocrity of the overall league. Maybe has something to do with the pandemic. This year I had more fun than I can remember.
I am truly mad at the 49er FO. I know the variables in the game make it hard to pinpoint exact areas of concern but I think we are in this position because of Shanny and his game plan and lack of adjustments. I have been blaming Jimmy for a lot of this but when it comes right down to it he’s not calling the plays. And, it really pissed me off that he ran Lance up the middle so much in his first start. The 4th down misses didn’t help either.
Yeah, I’m with you on that. I’ve been railing about the play calling for a while now. The pisser is everyone knows how to stop what we are doing. Stop the run and force Jimmy to pass. Sometimes we do alright, sometimes it’s a shit show, but inevitably our QBs get pounded.
So what does Kyle do? Run his brand new quarterback into the line a bunch of times and puts him in harm’s way. The NFL is dangerous enough without subjecting your #1 pick to a ton of hits. Stupid shit.
Shanahan has to come up with some new stuff. His genius label is getting stale.
Funny back in ST we couldn’t wait for a shit season to end
and dump every Bore Core player for 2022.Now after a incredible season which “NOBODY “ saw
coming and 107 wins and the division championship, it looks like the rocking chair guys will all
be back minus Cueto there is no way they pick up his 24 mil option..
All be back.
All a year older…
I guess baseball is one sport where getting “younger and more athletic” isn’t as important.
It can still help, though…
Whether LA can come back being down 3 games to 1 or not, I agree with Flappers who said that the Dodgers having to spend all season long chasing the Giants for the division title, and then having to grind through a Wild Card game and the 5 playoff games with the Giants, has taken a toll on the Dodgers.
And because of the division chase going down to the last game, LA had to start Muncy that last day and he got injured. Justin Turner looks totally worn out, and is now badly injured. Their starting pitching is showing tiredness.
But let’s see if Atlanta can seal the deal. Atlanta blew the 3-1 game lead last year.
Agree with all of this.
Braves hitters have been pounding LA pitching. IDK if Braves hitters are just hot, LA pitching has been overworked and/or mismanaged or a combo of both. Braves were 4th highest OPS in NL for the regular season, and 2nd in HRs just behind the Giants, so it’s definitely not extraordinary that they’re crushing the ball. I think both LA and SF were somewhat spent after a really intense season, especially the last 6 weeks when they were just neck and neck and essentially playing every game almost like a playoff…
Another guy to lock up is the presumptive MOTY, heading into “lame duck” contract year, right?
FBI confirms Laundrie’s death…
Too soon?
this is pretty impressive
I think an Atlanta/Houston World Series would be the lowest rated in baseball history. The league is flying Angel Hernandez and Doug Eddings to LA as fast as they possibly can.
Bring it on!
I guess it’s the new way and new wave in baseball, how the Giants built this year’s team, and you can’t argue with the success, no matter what the reason(s) might be for winning 107 games. But honestly, all year when they were winning all those games, I had the nagging thought that most of the players (other than the bore core) just didn’t *seem* like “starters”. A bunch of misfits, not really, but a bunch of platoon players, sort of. I can still name the regular starting lineups for the ’63 Yankees, the ’68 Tigers, and of course more recently the ’00 and ’02 and ’10 Giants, etc. etc. I probably won’t be able to name the *starting lineup* for this Giants team come December. Because there really wasn’t one. I don’t know why that bothers me, but it does. Watching these 4 teams who are still playing, they look like a bunch of good starting lineups. It sounds like Z isn’t going shopping for solid starting players… but I hope he does.
excellent post, i think we all felt this way but haven’t put it out there like this
I can see Cueto pitching forever like Bartolo Colon.
Why not after getting TJ so recently?
I think he loves to pitch and can still help some team on a reasonable deal…
Turner getting hurt opened a slot for Taylor. LA not dead yet
As for whether it matters more what a team does in the post-season: of course it does. Obviously a team must perform well all season in order to make the post-season, but if they’re not going to be able to get it done in the post-season, then what’s the point? As for this season being amazing and entertaining and surprising, sure it was. But in the end, it doesn’t matter, other than just “feeling good”. Remember Seattle winning, what, 114 games that one year? It didn’t matter in the end. Many here mocked the Dodgers for winning all those divisions but only winning it all in last year’s short asterisk year. Same with Braves, winning division after division but only one champsionship. All those division wins didn’t matter. And Pablo shining in the post-season did matter more than what he did all year: Giants won it all because of “the shining”. Mad Bum’s regular seasons were fine but not stellar; but he sure was in the post-season, and he has 3 rings to prove it. Oakland is often cited for having good seasons but never able to get it done in the post-season. It’s all that matters. Z-Harris have a little work to do to get this team back to that level of success.
Outstanding stuff!
How many of us are buying 2021 NL West Champions t-shirts?
Not me, but I would buy one that shows Pablo hitting his 3 homers with Jack Nicholson’s head on his body and the caption “The Shining”… Hell, I’d buy one that shows the “Masterpiece” model that you made…
That’s all well and good but look at Kershaw and Bummie. Opie gets in to the HoF based on his reg season record. Will Bummie get in on his playoff record?
