A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 29, 2021

Weather in Atlanta tonight looks shaky. Definitely favors pitching if they even get the game in. Cold. Rainy. It’s beautiful in the Bay tonight, too bad the game isn’t getting played here. 🙂

Question for Niner fans: I knew Jimmy wasn’t the guy as soon as he overthrew Sanders in the SB. Now that it’s clear everyone knows this what would you like to see happen if you could only make 1 move:

It is a deluge up here. Like a Nor Cal rain day so if these rain bands spin back toward GA prob no game.

I have not been enamored with Shanny’s play calling of late, but of the three…definitely Jimmy G (if one had to go).

Not here to rehash bygone Super Bowls (failed or otherwise) or talk about NBA, but…
I do remember the late Bob Ferry as one of typical of the day high post Centers as a player, and a fine GM who built solid team and brought title to Wash Wizards, only one in their history going back to Balt Bullets days.
His son Danny had pretty good run as college and NBA player, and GM too.

shea has interesting column in Chron re Melvin as maybe just first domino to fall with A’s. They have some talented players that could soon be available and who could really help Giants at positions of need–love for Giants and Z to take dead aim at them.

I don’t know whether I just saw it or read it “the fish stinks from the head on down” I think Shanny is to stuborn or incapable of changing his ways. He definitely has trouble adjusting to the situation.

Good article on The Athletic today re: the eight players the Giants have who are arbitration eligible. They used arbitration projections from MLB Trade Rumors. Here’s a high-level breakdown, with projected arbitration numbers in parens, and an opinion on whether or not they are offered arbitration:

Brebbia (1 mil) – no offer
    Casali (2 mil) – yes
    Dickerson (3 mil) – no
    Garcia (1.8 mil) – yes
    Leone (1.5 mil) – yes
    Ruf (2.6 mil) – yes
    Slater (2 mil) – yes
    Yaz (3.1 mil) – yes

    • willedav said, on October 29, 2021 at 8:53 am

Interesting that Brisbee suggested in that article Giants might offer Yaz an extension instead and buy out arb years. think he thought along line of 3 yrs/$15 mil.
Wonder what consensus here would be about that?

      • Winder said, on October 29, 2021 at 8:57 am

I would go for it. He’s a streaky hitter but a capable OF and he’s already bought into the system.

      • djloo27 said, on October 29, 2021 at 9:04 am

        I’d shop Yaz…

      • chipower9 said, on October 29, 2021 at 9:42 am

Yeah, not sure which way I would go. Not sure I would go three. Maybe two with an option. And if he is going to get around 3 in arbitration, why the hell make it 5 mil in a multi-year deal? Two at 8-9 mil with an option.

Outside of last year, his numbers have been good (he actually had quite a few more RBIs this year compared to the others – and more HRs – 25).

In three years at the ML level:

        .255, .336, .500, .836 OPS+ 122 with 56 HR and 161 RBI

    • djloo27 said, on October 29, 2021 at 10:47 am

I wouldn’t mind a whole new outfield instead of our cobbled conglomeration of middling honkies…

  7. djloo27 said, on October 29, 2021 at 9:04 am

Jimmy G is the new Matt Cassel…

  8. alleykat69 said, on October 29, 2021 at 9:41 am

Jimmy G is now getting down to Gio Carmazzi and Jim Drunkenmiller levels with a dash of Cody Pickett!
He plays like former teammate in New England LB Marcellus Bennett said after Brady got hurt to start the 2016 season and was out the first 4 weeks of the season, Jimmy had his run and and after the 3rd game he came up with a fake injury and couldn’t play last second against the Bills which they lost with backup QB Brissett who had a real injury but played thru it.Jimmy is a “BITCH” for letting the team down, I have no respect for him..

    • unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2021 at 10:39 am

Yep. Read that the other day. Jimmy and his agent didn’t want him getting hurt so he hid on the bench.]

  9. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2021 at 10:37 am

I’d lose Kyle before the rest. I think a lot of Jimmy’s problems stem from how Kyle runs the offense. Kyle is an abject idiot. He’s fucking hardheaded and ignorant to what is in front of him.

Stops me if you’ve heard this before, but we NEVER throw deep. The 2 times we threw even medium deep last week was to fucking Hasty. The RB!!! Who’s 5′ 8″!!! Or we throw to the FB Juice! It blows my mind that NO ONE EVER asks Shanahan, why are you scared to throw deep?

It is FUCKING LUDICROUS that Shanny (and Singletary, and Sir Fartsalot, and Harbaugh, and Nolan before him) simply refuse to throw deep. Teams throw deep more in half a season than we have in the last 16!

And our biggest impediment to offensive success is Shanahan himself. Last week he engineered that nice drive to open the game. Roll outs for Jimmy and some nice easy crossing routes to guys. It was so successful that Shanahan of course stopped doing that for 2.5 quarters.

When he did that again late in the 3rd, 3 plays and a TD on rollouts.

Again, KYLE STOPPED DOING IT!!!!! Indy didn’t radically change their defense, WE STOPPED OURSELVES!!!! FUCKING SHOOT ME!!!!!!!

I’m no offensive genius, but Jesus fucking Christ! If you find a weakness, exploit it until THEY figure out how to stop it. don’t stop it on your own. Harbaugh used to do the same shit. Fucking infuriating.

Like his fucking father and Harbaugh, they all think they are the smartest guys in the room, and no one can tell them otherwise.

    • chipower9 said, on October 29, 2021 at 11:06 am

Before giving Shanahan the boot (because even tho he has sucked in calling the games), he is great at schemes, etc. I would hope he would let McDaniel call the plays for a while.

Bottom line we are all dealing in fantasies. Kyle is going nowhere, and neither is Jimmy G, at least until the end of the season.

Flav – any way to get the poll to show the current results? Not seeing it. Saw it was 2-0 for Jimmy G when I made my choice.

Jimmy has zero pocket awareness. If he has time he’s not terrible. But you can say that about almost any QB. And he makes way too much fucking money to be like this

  11. snarkk said, on October 29, 2021 at 11:50 am

Melvin leaving the A’s signals fire sale by that sad sack organization of some good guys scheduled for arb.
Farhan should be ready to do some business with Beane…

    • alleykat69 said, on October 29, 2021 at 1:19 pm

Yeah I agree Snarkk I’d be all over burning up the phone lines to acquire 1B Matt Olsen and his chump change 5 million contract and he’s only 27-28? Hell right out of the gate u save 13 mill plus over Belts contract along with the age and injuries guaranteed over Olson, and he’s a GG player as well 2 going for 3? Last I looked even though we all think Belt’s a great defender he’s never won a GG?

    • Winder said, on October 29, 2021 at 1:30 pm

IIRC the A’s rarely do business with the Giants. I think it mostly has to do with those territorial rights. I could very well be wrong also.

  12. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2021 at 12:44 pm

Wonder when Beanie Bill hits the road.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 29, 2021 at 1:45 pm

Beane is not going anywhere, he just turned down the Mets, like he did with Boston a few years back. He’s very content staying on the West Coast then moving to the east coast and relocating his family. He’s been with the A’s forever just don’t see it ever happening..

    • Bozo said, on October 29, 2021 at 3:25 pm

He’s also a part owner, so I’d say he’s also part of the problem for Oakland.

Fox mentioned sport book odds the other night, so I’m guessing a team in Vegas isn’t to far behind.
I can’t imagine baseball for entertainment in Vegas, that would be like a carnival setting up next to Circus Circus.

  13. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2021 at 12:45 pm

I can see Slater or Yaz, but not Slater AND yaz. They need to get a bona fide outfielder. No more of this platoonie shit.

    • snarkk said, on October 29, 2021 at 1:49 pm

I could do without them both, if Farhan gets some all around athletes in here. Upgrade the outfield…

    • unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2021 at 4:00 pm

Slater can be a defensive replacement/pinch runner.

Chuck it’s 14-8-0 for Jimmy, Kyle and Lynch respectively.

  16. willedav said, on October 29, 2021 at 5:28 pm

take a look at who is out there as FA for OF, either corners or CF. They are all either past 30 or mostly washed/DH guys from AL, coming off dismal seasons, or expensive like Bryant who is almost universally panned here. Unless you want high priced SS, bad time to be looking for FA help.
Have a feeling that outside of Belt and Posey, Z spends whatev $$ on pitching, and brings back most of the same OF except Dickerson.
The combo/platoon OF helped team score a lot of runs and hit HRs for a team that won 107. It ain’t getting blown up overnight.

I didn’t know it gets cold in Atlanta.
    Is it a fluke?

    Nice game by Aqualung tonight.

  19. alleykat69 said, on October 29, 2021 at 8:27 pm

One thing to just let your manager go like the A’s did with Bob Melvin after they gave him permission to talk with the Padres, but to still not ask for compensation is mind boggling. They really are as cheap an frugal and whatever fan base they have less should tell them to stick it and stop showing up.Not that there not use to playing in front of 4000-5000 fans anyway.Good for Melvin to actually go to an organization that wants to win.

    • snarkk said, on October 29, 2021 at 8:36 pm

Yeah, I thought about that, too.
Melvin was under A’s contract for 2022.
Head scratcher that the A’s didn’t at least get a draft pick or two back, which I think is OK under the CBA, or at least some minor league pitching prospect. To just let him go is weird, but that’s the A’s…

These ‘21 Dodgers are free agents. I’m not into the Giants signing ex-Dodgers but it wouldn’t shock me if Z/Harris went after one of them. One of our closers this season was technically an ex-Dodger.
    Clayton Kershaw
    Corey Seager
    Kenley Jansen
    Chris Taylor
    Jimmy Nelson
    Corey Knebel
    Albert Pujols
    Max Scherzer

Sac Kings defeated the Suns in Phoenix.
The Kings are becoming a bit tougher and more physical, which they had to do to compete better on a nightly basis.
Bagley is getting very little playing time. Not sure what’s up with that. Maybe Walton has given up on him.

    • djloo27 said, on October 30, 2021 at 4:01 am

Zumiee, your boy McCartney seems to be putting out something every other day…

Dumb thing to do even if it was true – which it ain’t.
Plenty of dopes like me stayed loyal for the half century between titles.
      Twitter ain’t the real world.
These guys should know better than to get sucked in to that stuff…

Nice relatively recent song from McCartney:

    • zumiee said, on October 30, 2021 at 7:34 am

Nice cover version of the song from this woman. Just her voice and piano. One of the interesting things about this song is that the chorus of the song goes into lower notes instead of higher notes. Most songs tend to want the chorus to burst out with higher notes.
McCartney did the opposite thing with the chorus in this song.

  28. willedav said, on October 30, 2021 at 8:08 am

On Zum list of LA FAs, Chris Taylor would be interesting, lower cost version of versatile player than Bryant. Seems much less annoying than others in that uniform. Did have late season slump before playoffs too.
Would be great blow to them if they lost both Taylor and Seager. Dogs have similar targets as Giants, for pitching and OF bat.

  29. Winder said, on October 30, 2021 at 8:39 am

Once again pitching win Championships. Go Braves.

    • djloo27 said, on October 30, 2021 at 8:49 am

You would think so, yet it only won one for Maddux – Smoltz – Glavine and that was back when SPs were expected to go at least 7 innings, right?

  30. alleykat69 said, on October 30, 2021 at 9:20 am

Yeah that was some run by the Braves back in the day. What did they have like 12? Straight division titles? But only 1 W/S ring, crazy .They had a pitcher I thought was going to add to the big 3,Maddux,Smoltz&Glavine in hard throwing LHP Steve Avery, man he had good stuff,(couple of 18 win seasons) but I think the Braves overused him at his young age and he had arm problems that curtailed a promising career..

I got the Moderna booster about 2 hours ago.
Started feeling really crappy last hour.
No energy at all. Can hardly move.
Got it as a walk in – under 65.
    I think I’ll go out and get a McRib…
