A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Remembering Another Game 6

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 2, 2021

I’m surprised to hear about so many of you guys not watching this World Series. It’s actually been quite entertaining. It kinda feels like Atlanta has to do this tonight, right? In 2002 the Giants had a chance to take down the Angels in Game 6. I’ll never forget that night. I was watching the game alone in my condo at Redwood Shores. Too nervous to watch it with anyone. 7th inning stretch came and I was a raging rocket ship ball of energy. For some reason I decided to take a quick shower, no idea why I did that. Halfway through my 2 minute shower (that’s 1 minute in for you math geeks) I started weeping. I couldn’t believe this was about to finally happen. I got out, toweled off and settled back in for what would turn into one of my greatest real life nightmares. Game 7, we never had a chance. Those rally monkey fucks won it all in Game 6.

I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to the Braves tonight…..

Yeah, it’s hard to win Game 7 after losing Game 6. The ‘75 Reds did do it after the Fisk HR in Game 6. That was pretty amazing.
The ‘14 Giants won Game 7 after losing 10-0 in Game 6. That’s another amazing accomplishment.
It’s very difficult mentally and emotionally, I’m sure.

      A few more: Pirates ’71, A’s ’72, *Astros ’17.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 2, 2021 at 12:59 pm

That team, which was a lot like this year’s team, really bounced back from crippling losses.

In the 6th game, it’s probably more how you win or lose. Losing a game 6 in a blowout, maybe not so damaging, but losing a game 6 you should have won…. fuhgettaboutit, that was your chance, it’s over. Craig, I feel your pain. I think I’ve mentioned here, I got to go thru it twice, after Boston ’86. Eerily similar circumstances and results. I was shell shocked in ’02, couldn’t believe it was happening again.

    • Giant Head said, on November 2, 2021 at 10:59 am

Yeah isn’t that what happened last year after the Rays manager blew Game 6???

  3. zumiee said, on November 2, 2021 at 7:03 am

For Sac Kings fans, it was the tough loss to the Lakers in Game 6, in what many consider the worst reffed game in NBA history. Then the Kings lost Game 7 in overtime. It was the best chance the Kings had to win a championship for Sacramento. The Lakers went on, ho-hum, to win another championship.

    • zumiee said, on November 2, 2021 at 7:08 am

A different NBA ref later claimed the refs had thrown the Game 6 to the Lakers.

      • zumiee said, on November 2, 2021 at 7:18 am

I think it more likely that after Phil Jackson complained to the media about the reffing in Game 5, the refs over-compensated for the Lakers in Game 6. The refs may have even gotten some kind of message from the NBA office about their reffing before Game 6. Jackson carried a lot of weight with the NBA because of his coaching legacy.

      • Giant Head said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:01 am

Fuck Phil Jackson I said then and continue

    • Macdog said, on November 2, 2021 at 7:55 am

The Horry shot to win Game 4 was also a killer.

    • Giant Head said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:00 am

That was worst officiating in history and then none of the Kings had balls to take shots Game 7

flav, owe you a bravo for opting out of attending Giants games while owned by Mr. Johnson.
When story of who he donated to first came out some time ago, there were backtracks, apologies and excuses. One was the $$ he gave went to an election committee who then decided where and to whom it went, so he didn’t personally send it to fill in lunatic blank. The son deflected some of this too in an interview I read, maybe in Chron, that seemed slimy.

Now you got more of it 2020, so it wasn’t just a one off anomaly, it’s how his money bankrolls those on his side.
    Disgusting.

    • Winder said, on November 2, 2021 at 7:59 am

It’s definitely a huge stain on the Giants org. However, it seems more like a fan situation than say a Stoneham situation where he traded away the future of the team.

    • Giant Head said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:02 am

      Charles Johnson greatest man alive!!:)

      • chipower9 said, on November 2, 2021 at 12:33 pm

Pfffttt…Fuck Charles Johnson and the horse he rode in on (no offense to the horse…just the horse’s ass…ie Charles Johnson).

How does a nightmare begin, rally monkeys,Dusty firing up the Angels with the game ball to Ortiz a huge boner move and a bum named Scott Spezio I still shake my head in disbelief..

    • unca_chuck said, on November 2, 2021 at 1:01 pm

No one on the Angels were aware of the ball given to Oritz at the time. But it’s a great story.

      Bullshit, but great.

  6. chipower9 said, on November 2, 2021 at 8:23 am

That was a fucking nightmare for me, too. Same story…watching the game alone, and as Kat alludes, when Dusty came out to lift Russ Ortiz, and handed him the game ball (like it would be a lifetime keepsake), I knew we were doomed. That was just bad juju all the way.

There were the rally monkeys and also thundersticks, if my memory serves me correctly.

  7. Flavor said, on November 2, 2021 at 8:50 am

I can still be a fan of the team and not give that lunatic loving psycho any more money. Fuck him. And there’s at least a chance he’ll sell the team especially if there’s a swell of support against him. Which it looks like there will be this time. Again, this isn’t a red vs blue thing. Johnson willingly donates insane amounts of $$$ to absolute lunatics and aplogizes for it and keeps doing it. FUCK him sideways I’m sick of his shit.

    • Giant Head said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:05 am

His kid is running the team you think he is going to sell his portion???? Don’t think so. Do we even know he has a 50% stake? I don’t think he does.

    • Giant Head said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:10 am

You actually would be surprised that people like Charles Johnson don’t actually pay much attention to who or what they are donating to. They have so much money and some friend and contact of his says he this is a good cause and he just writes a check. I bet he pays very little attention, why I tried trying to give to one of my causes a few years ago.

      • Flavor said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:27 am

Bullshit. These are high profile lunatics. Don’t fucking talk down to me with your bullshit today GH, not in the mood

      • snarkk said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:52 am

There is no way Johnson doesn’t know about the protests of his contributions to fascist lunatics and Stop the Steal liars. Unless he’s senile or doesn’t give a crap, anyway. If it’s the former then he shouldn’t be the lead owner of the Giants, if it’s the latter, same thing. Whether he owns 50% or more is irrelevant, he’s the guy that’s has the biggest partnership interest, and calls the management shots. Stoneham was a drunk, Lurie was generally a good dude and stopped the Giants from going to Toronto, McGowan was a baseball lover and built the ballpark — all better than this Johnson a-hole who is bringing disrepute onto this franchise…

Game 6, 2002 I was at the Dolores street bar and starting to do shots of tequila. The bartenders were starting to put cheap champagne on ice. I don’t buy the reason the Angels got fired up was because of the game ball, it’s a win or go home game, I gotta believe those fuckers were pretty fired up already. Maybe not leaving Ortis in longer can be hung on Dusty, but the pen blew the game. Nen’s arm was toast, Flex Rod and Worrell had to close the door and they didn’t. I watched the 7th game home alone, like y’all I was pretty sure they’d lose it.

I came to really like Sabean during that series. At the start of the 4th game I was walking by his box and I thanked him for the great year and he leaned out and shook my hand, before the 5th game I did the same thing and he just nodded at me. I said yesterday you shook my hand and we won, his hand shoots out the window. The dude believed in jinxes like everyone else, had to like that.

  9. willedav said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:04 am

Column in Chron today from John Shea on Ortiz. He later played with few of Angels, who told him they didn’t even notice Baker giving him the ball and said that wasn’t what had them fired up to unload on giants pen.
Ortiz still loves Baker and said it was honor to have the ball from pitching in WS game.

Developing story ..Raiders WR Henry Ruggs is charged with DUI resulting in death of another person following traffic collision in Las Vegas..

  11. willedav said, on November 2, 2021 at 11:38 am

Pads make it official and sign Melvin to 3 yr deal. They have some health issues with pitching and some bloated contracts for couple underperforming players, but Melvin is really good get.

Meanwhile, MLBTR had story 2 months ago about how many arb eligible players A’s have and list is significant, and could be costly: Olson Chapman Montas Manaea Bassitt and Laureano and Pinder. Guesstimates run these guys alone could be $45-50 mil range. Diekman has $4 mil club option.

Could signal return to another rebuild era over there. Z knows system well–love for SF to be able to poach some of that talent, even if costs prospect or 2.

Lot of talk in Athletic lately on Giants QO candidates.
Would offering one to Belt be a good (short term) move? Would he take it or turn it down to get more years?

  13. snarkk said, on November 2, 2021 at 12:25 pm

This Bishop kid is in the AFL.
He looks promising, but sheezus, he seemingly can’t keep healthy so far, he’s already 23 and time is a’wastin’. Hopefully, that is behind him and he can get some consistent reps in the minors next year. I wonder if they send these guys like this to Winter Ball? He needs playing time…

This whole “he didn’t know who he’s donating to” even tho he’s apologized now 3 times for it is utter nonsense. Now he’s just doing this to fuck with people. He can do what he likes I guess. But I am not giving this fuck any money.

    • snarkk said, on November 2, 2021 at 12:48 pm

It’s a major embarrassment, at minimum.
He’s the main ownership of a storied franchise in US sports, my favorite team of a lifetime, and he’s fully supporting insurrectionists…

    • unca_chuck said, on November 2, 2021 at 1:08 pm

Utter bullshit. Charlie knows good and goddamn well who he donates to. Every fucking dime. Like I said, you talk to him about baseball, the stock market, or whatever, and he’s a nice guy.

Back when we were all young, no one really talked politics like this, and made everything about it. Now it determines everything. Fuck that shit. Im not happy with Johnson’s decisions, but does this mean I need to find out how Peter Magown votes before I go to Safeway? Sorry, I don’t have time to vet every place I shop.

As far as not going to games? Fuck that. I’ll go. Isn’t railing against other people’s stances part of the problem, not the solution?

  15. chipower9 said, on November 2, 2021 at 12:44 pm

Yeah, last I read in The Athletic was the brass is weighing whether to extend a QO to Belt, or make him a multi-year deal. Z said he is a priority. If they offer the QO and Belt says no and walks, Giants get draft compensation.

  16. chipower9 said, on November 2, 2021 at 12:45 pm

Reports this morning are that the Niners are trading a late-round draft pick for DE Charles Omenihu of the Texans.

    • Flavor said, on November 2, 2021 at 1:09 pm

They should trade all their draft picks for known talent. They don’t know what the Fuck they’re doing with the draft.

  17. unca_chuck said, on November 2, 2021 at 1:30 pm

Right, Chuck. The guys is a steal. He’s a stud. 4 sacks and 16 pressures last year in 7 starts. Really like the guy.

The first Vegas casualty. Henry Ruggs III, all of 22, killed another driver in a DUI Crash at 3:30 am this morning.

In Nevada, that’s a $50.00 fine and a night in jail.

No idea really. But Donte Stallworth got 30 days in jail and a year suspension for DUI vehicular manslaughter in Fla.

I won’t link to them, but there are online reports on this with photos of the crash — horrific.
The idiot must have been driving at very high speed and fell asleep or something and just slammed into the car in front of him…

Ruggs girlfriend Kiara Washington was a passenger in his corvette and suffered major injuries.
The unidentified woman in the Toyota RAV4 was trapped in her suv and unable to get out before it engulfed in flames after the rear end collision it’s been reported..Just horrible And avoidable if he called a freaking Uber! Hell I might be wrong but I thought maybe the NFL even supplies a courtesy car for players?Shit he could of even had his corvette towed wtf?

Much like the shot heard ’round the world, it didn’t work out that way.

Watched game 6 at a bar with my Giants buddy Greg. Mostly Angels fans. We did a shot called an Angel slammer. Spezio hit it out about 1 min later. I hate that guy. He fouled off some unhittable pitches before squaring it up. I believe still Sanders should have caught that ball. Miss timed his jump and hit the wall on the way up.
maybe Dusty thought so too, and that’s why sanders got pinch hit for by some guy named goodwin, even after sanders got the only rbi. Grr lame move by Dusty. Go Braves!
