Vacation Thread
Still at the beach but wanted to give you guys a new thread. My only quibble with this trip is the weather. I’ve been to San Diego a dozen times+ and it’s always been gorgeous. It is cold and foggy. I didn’t pack for this. San Dawg I’d like to speak with the manager.
Breeders Cup Saturday! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Ha. Is supposed to be 5 degrees warmer there today but still partly cloudy. Saw Brit Eurton at start of show in her white outfit and big hat, then later in day she had long sleeve wrap over it doing interviews.

Paul and Loo, this had been the Giants policy on retiring numbers per their site, looks like Clark will be the 2nd exception.
“The Giants officially retire a player’s number when he reaches the Hall of Fame. They’ve made one exception, placing left fielder Barry Bonds’ No. 25 off-limits in 2018. Of course, Bonds possesses enough credentials to warrant such an honor, having ended his career after the 2007 season as baseball’s all-time home run leader.”
Enjoy the races! Sorry about the weather!
Some teams destined to always suck. Reds waiving a pitcher with a 2.9 war?
Big Flavor is by far the best handicapper/bettor I have ever seen in my 50+ years at the track.
I don’t know why he bothers to go to work.
That is all for now…
thanks. I had a good day.
You made me realize at least 2 major things I’ve been doing fundamentally wrong all these years.
Too late to change without a brain transplant, unfortunately…
I wouldn’t mind Avisail Garcia in our outfield…
It was Round Table BBQ chicken pizza for dinner tonight. It was good.

Without LeBron in the lineup, the Lakers are just nothing. And, of course, he ain’t getting any younger.
Intriguing starting pitcher free agents:

With Posey now off the books with an additional 22 million in savings, they should go all in getting Bryant back and adding Castellanos for 2/3 of the outfield with Yaz/Wade.Hell even Taylor with Bryant adds awesome flexibility for both infield and outfield..
Last day for teams to issue QOs. Those that already have them: Conforto Thor Semien Story Seager Ray and Castellanos. Above plus any that get them today have 10 days to accept or decline.
Long article in MLBTR on Giants offseason with ton of comments. Lot of options for Z.
SF declined large Cueto option for which he gets $5 mil buyout. Still no word on whether they picked up options for Flores and Alvarez, $3mil and $1.5 I think, good reasonable deals.
If they don’t bring back Mr.Ed, I’m not sure I want to go on living…
Cue up “I’ve got a mind to give up living/and go shopping instead” great track from Paul Butterfield Band and others.
Loo..They can’t be horsing around with Mr.Ed,he’s a must sign especially since sadly Barrels won’t be back imo, with his vet presence and just a clutch bat even if he gets screwed on check swings!!
Z/H already panning for gold have signed 2 pitchers Harvey&Palumbao? and an outfielder Austin Dean ..
The firm of Harvey&Dean have major league small sample size experience.Hell atleast with Harvey we get SanDawg’s Harvey Mobile up and running stocked with Harvey Bars!!
Waiver claims, Kat. I think Zaidi plays waiver roulette just to relax. I don’t think any have ever stuck have they?
I guess I follow the NBA these days mainly because it carries through to the next baseball season. An NBA team doesn’t play as many times a week as a baseball team, but between the Kings and the Warriors, a lot of the week is covered for me. And I’ll watch the occasional game of other teams, even though, as I’ve said many times, I don’t like the style of play in the NBA as much these days. But, obviously, the talent and athleticism of today’s players is off the charts.
Wow good day to be Giants fan.
My tribute to Buster Posey: http://bardball.com/2021/11/07/the-center/
Pawlie,
That’s a masterpiece of words and such a beautiful right on tribute to Gerald Dempsey “Buster” Posey! The greatest catcher in SF history that all of us were privileged to watch in a stellar career!
Thanks for putting your legendary and always creative writing ✍️ to work for “The Flap” and all others your work certainly inspires..
That was really nice.
Excellent, Pawlie!
That was awesome, Pawlie. Thanks for sharing.
One of your best!
You moved me, man…
Shea said Giants did offer QO to Belt. Picked up options of Flores and Alvarez while declining the one on Cueto.
Oops, didn’t see your post. You had it covered.
not really, missed Jackson and you have full article with more info.
btw I’m also watching more NBA these days. One of my fav players is Cavs big man Jarrett Allen, paired with Evan Mobley of USC..
Good luck to Kings nice to see them smoke Charlotte Hornets and LaMelo…spelled without any D.
Jimmy Butler of the Heat has become one of my favorite NBA players. He seems old-school to me. Plays with a lot of fire. Really wants his team to win.
“The San Francisco Giants have made their first attempt at bringing back Brandon Belt for next season.
The Giants extended the first baseman a one-year qualifying offer on Sunday, worth $18.4 million. The offer is an obvious indication that San Francisco wants to move forward with Belt, but it is now up to him to decide if one-year is enough security after a career-year by the Bay.
Belt has until Nov. 17 to decide if he wants to accept the deal or become a free agent.
The Giants also exercised club options for LHP Jose Alvarez, IF Wilmer Flores and RHP Jay Jackson and declined a club option on RHP Johnny Cueto worth $26 million for next season.
Lastly, San Francisco added RHP Yunior Marte to the active roster. Marte, 26, appeared in 43 games for Triple-A Sacramento last season posting a 3.49 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
The Giants now have 38 players on their 40-man roster.”
Chris Taylor got one too, as did Freddie Freeman and J Verlander. Total of 14 overall per MLBTR.
Think Freeman’s insulted?
Belt?
I am not sure about Freeman, but I think Belt understands this is a part of the process. Z has made it absolutely clear that Belt is a priority for the team.
MLBTR had story quoting Braves GM saying they would spend $$. Who is bigger priority and icon than Freeman?
Does set up another round of Belt Wars.
Patrick Mahomes is completely unrecognizable.
It’s shocking how bad he looks…
It is shocking. How did that happen, so quickly?
Lyin’ Rodgers screwed his team over.
The Packers are in such a terrible division, though. They have a cake-walk to the division title.
Pawlie, beautiful.
Bozo, thanks for digging up SF’s “policy” for retiring player numbers. This somewhat surprised me: “The Giants officially retire a player’s number when he reaches the Hall of Fame.” That makes no sense to me. Fine, automatically retire the number of any player who makes the Hall, but for that to be the main criteria? Seems to me it should be more like the hell with the HOF, this player, this San Francisco Giants player, HOF or no, was special and made great contributions to the team’s success over the years and deserves our own recognition. Retiring a HOFer seems redundant in a way; and not retiring other players perhaps deserving of the HOF but “never gonna get it” is just stoopid. IMO.
Paul, apparently the SF brass heard and agreed with your argument and that’s why they retired #25 and will be retiring #22. Or they came up with a new criteria, where only #s worn by two people with the same last name will get retired. 🙂
Cool. I mean, there really aren’t all that many players deserving of it, but certainly a few come to mind, including The Thrill and Bonds. And probably IMO Posey and MadBum.
And of course Kent, whose #21 they hand out to any slob who makes the team…
Yeah, maybe Kent too. I even sentimentally lean towards Pablo.
Pawlie
Thank you! So good!
Thanks, Flap Nation, for the Flapperacious kudos.
Glad to see Crawford win the Gold Glove. What a great year he had.
Article on MLB *predicts* 17 free agent signings. Seems at times to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but maybe the guy is serious. Of the Giants, he *predicts” signing both Scherzer and Verlander: “Starting pitching will be Farhan Zaidi’s top priority. And given the organizational preference for shorter-term deals (as well as the organizational embrace of old dudes), either Scherzer or Verlander would be a great fit. The Giants have the rotation space and the resources to outbid the field for both…. How cool would it be to see these two future Hall of Famers in the same rotation and wearing uniforms that feature the color orange? I mean, it’s hard to even imagine something like that…” Yes, it is.
New York Post FA predictions for Giants:
Disco: 1/$18.4
Gausman: 5/$110
Taylor: 5/$100
Belt: 3/$70
