A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

It’s Not Even Winter Yet And Sports Are Dead

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 8, 2021

Post Breeders Cup doldrums hitting me hard this morning, gents. Couple that with no more baseball, the Niners are impossible to watch….what else in the wide world of sports is going on? The Warriors? Eh, I can really only tolerate pieces of NBA games these days. Thank God for fantasy sports, there will always be that.

Buster Posey! I’ve heard many people honoring his retirement speech to the media. Pasalon even disclosed that he shed at least one tear. Buster retiring spawned a serious debate between my friends Bird Dog and The Mudman. BD declared confidently that Buster is a first ballot HOFer. Mudman screamed “Nay!” And a bet was born. I don’t think Buster’s got a snow ball’s chance in hell of getting in first ballot but I could see him making it after that. Thoughts? Although BD did secure 20-1 odds on his bet, it feels like The Mudman has Bird Dog over a barrel on this one, aye?

Time for Shanahan to go??? Pathetic effort yday especially coming out of the half. I’m done with Jimmy G-od Awful. Trey Lance era.

But what I am enjoying out with the Dubs is Mr. Gary Payton Jr!!!

  3. willedav said, on November 8, 2021 at 6:19 am

Fans of Bill Freehan and Thurman Munson would say definite no to Posey going in on first ballot. Still, Molina has supposedly been a lock, and Posey has been much better hitter.

  4. Bozo said, on November 8, 2021 at 6:46 am

Posey assisted the Giants in so many ways for their three crowns, he was outstanding in 2012 and received the MVP for it. He was one of the best catchers during his playing years, the best? Hmm, maybe.
Personally I think the HOF is a sham and I really don’t give a rats ass about it, or the writers that vote. Whatever.
So is he a 1st ballot HOFer in my opinion? Sorry, I don’t think so. Is he a HOFer? If he wasn’t a Giant I’m not even sure I’d think he was. But again, my disdain for the Hall and it’s voters probably taints my opinion anything HOF related

    • Winder said, on November 8, 2021 at 9:13 am

I have thought the same thing about HOF voters for years. Complete arrogance IMO.

      • Winder said, on November 8, 2021 at 9:15 am

I think Posey should make it in by year 6.

  5. willedav said, on November 8, 2021 at 7:58 am

time off due to serious injuries shouldn’t be held against him, along with worrying about concussions incurred behind the plate.
I do wonder in 5 years how those voting will value Posey’s career .300 batting average. These days BA isn’t of much importance to analytic crowd compared to other stats. As a young fan, I looked forward every Sunday to seeing Chron list every full time hitter in order of BA, with HRs and rbis next to it, maybe runs scored too.

idk this is great time to watch sports imo. College football ( lot of exciting last weekend games) is coming down to wire for conference races and rivalry games, college b-ball will start very soon. I’ve watched far more NBA (with much local excitement) than in past seasons already and there is plenty to follow talking about Giants and how they approach off season.
Niners, yikes. Tis interesting though that lot of supposed good NFL teams fell apart and have been upset lately

    • willedav said, on November 8, 2021 at 8:09 am

Stanford women’s team is defending b-ball champs, and hella fun to watch.

    • Macdog said, on November 8, 2021 at 8:17 am

I saw your comment yesterday about Jarrett Allen, good to see him doing well with Cavs, it was tough having to give him up along with LeVert, but such is the price for getting another star player.

  7. unca_chuck said, on November 8, 2021 at 9:32 am

This football season is crazy. Niners abject suckage notwithstanding, and what a waste of a beautiful day yesterday, but there’s a lot of great football being played by the likes of Buffalo (who lost to Jax!!), the Raiders (who lost to the Giants), the Rams (who lost to Tenn), Green Bay (who lost to the Chiefs) and Dallas (who lost to Denver).

The Warriors are a very fun team to watch. Poole is really shaping up to be Curry lite, Porter is playing great as are D Lee and Bejica, Dray is his solid defensive self, and they will be getting Klay back.

With Buster, the perception of him will likely get him in1st ballot. He did everything right. He’s the Wonderboy of baseball.

    • Winder said, on November 8, 2021 at 10:35 am

The sportsbooks probably made a killing yesterday. I watched the cbs pregame, the nfl pregame and some espn pregame and they pretty much said the same thing. Bet the ranch on Buffalo, Dallas, the Raiders, and the Rams. Most of em did pick AZ to take though so they weren’t totally wrong.

  8. alleykat69 said, on November 8, 2021 at 10:13 am

I didn’t think the Giants had a snow ball chance in hell to sniff .500 and yet they win the damm division.
So things change in mysterious ways, and maybe these moron sports writers will change as well.Posey is what the true tradition of the game should represent ( yes that’s been screwed up now along time) and should be elected in his 1st year and of course they’re will always be the asshole voters sadly so it will be 88% that gets him in.Still steamed Jeff Kent is not in of course all different values then Posey playing, but the HOF is loaded with those players so BFD?his numbers by a second baseman are unmatched with his HR’s and driving in clutch runs! And his epic quote come ARB’S time said it all : “The money lies with the RBI’s “ Still puts a grin 😁 on my face..

    • Winder said, on November 8, 2021 at 10:37 am

Jeff Kent was so good that it took most of the sting off of losing Williams.

  9. alleykat69 said, on November 8, 2021 at 10:43 am

Oh btw even fantasy football sucks when your players/team decide to take the week off! How in hell the best team in the AFC imo the Buffalo Bills lose to the worst in Jacksonville 9-6??? Trap game ? Whatever? That’s a bullshit phrase too!! What’s that suppose to mean?Princess Lelia yelling to Luke it’s a trap 🪤??
I have both QB Josh Allen and WR Stephon Diggs who laid a steaming shit with their asses and butt slid it from one endzone to the other!

Lots of weird games yesterday,Cowboys and Rams both rolling both lose at home big?
Packers losing no surprise with Love at QB in his first start even if it’s the lowly Chiefs( sorry Loo, but it won’t matter your Chiefs will still get in) who climb back over .500 (5-4) but Arrowhead is not the best place to make your debut!

  10. Bozo said, on November 8, 2021 at 11:11 am

I think the only first ballot HOF catchers are Johnny Bench and Pudge.

    • Flavor said, on November 8, 2021 at 11:40 am

      • Bozo said, on November 8, 2021 at 12:02 pm

Berra and Fisk got in on their 2nd ballots, Piazza his 4th ballot, Gary Carter the 6th.

  11. snarkk said, on November 8, 2021 at 12:02 pm

If Buster cared much about the HOF, he’d have re-upped for another year. He didn’t, so I’m not going to sweat his HOF chances if he’s not. Besides, the HOF has lost much of its luster the last decade, it’s got very little credibility left. He’s a top 10 Giant player since the move West, that’s pretty darn good. Unlike baseball, does the NFL HOF even care if a guy got caught using ‘roids? If he’s been a top player over time, I don’t think that kind of a speed bump even matters, and it’s rare anyone gets caught anyway. Any league that rampantly uses Tordol to keep injured players on the field can’t with a straight face say it’s into PEDs prevention, can it?…

    • Bozo said, on November 8, 2021 at 12:11 pm

and 5 of those top 10 are in the Hall, plus Bonds and Kent who should be. So yeah that top 10 does get you into some pretty rarefied air.

  12. Bozo said, on November 8, 2021 at 12:31 pm

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Buster was the Rays selection in the 08 draft until draft day when they decided to go with Tim Beckham. Oops on Andrew Friedman’s part, probably haunted him even more after Friedman took over the Dodgers.

First, I am with Bozo in that I think the HOF is bullshit. RE: Buster making it first ballot, I don’t think it will happen. Not saying definitively it will not, but I think the odds are against him.

Only 99 days until pitchers and catchers report.

  14. willedav said, on November 8, 2021 at 2:54 pm

wow Twins hired Jayce Tingler as bench coach. Yanks supposed to make Luis Rojas (one of Felipe’s sons) to be 3rd base coach.

  15. alleykat69 said, on November 8, 2021 at 2:57 pm

2 of most annoying words in postgame interviews for baseball/Football/ hell coaches too! for sure
    “Umm and You Know”

These guys all have education unless they skipped classes in college ( which of course happens)
Disco is the king of Umm when they talk with him.
You know?Football players are the worst.. Like WTF am I suppose to know and agree with you for?

    Posey 1BHOF

    • djloo27 said, on November 8, 2021 at 6:03 pm

Does it affect his first ballot chances if no doubters like Pujols, Kershaw, etc, pack it in as well?

  17. Flavor said, on November 8, 2021 at 6:57 pm

Buster’s shot at first ballot was near nil anyway, if any certain HOFers retire this year he’s fucked on first ballot

    • birddogpdx said, on November 8, 2021 at 7:10 pm

20-1 odds. Would you like a piece of the bet?

      • Flavor said, on November 8, 2021 at 7:29 pm

you could get 1000-1 you’re still gonna be weeping and dutifully paying the mudman off when all is said and done

So Flavor should we make it 1000-1 for $10?

Raiders 2020 draft has now turned into the worst of alltime. Not only with Ruggs stupidity of drunk driving resulting in a woman and her dog dying in a horrific fireball crash, they have also just released their other #1 pick CB Damon Arnette for wielding a gun in someone’s face caught on video to go along with both 3rd rounds picks being cut..

I think Vegas has a little to much action for some people.

  20. zumiee said, on November 9, 2021 at 1:26 am

Bagley has played a total of 10 minutes for the Kings this season. Not 10 minutes per game. 10 minutes TOTAL for the season so far.
I have no idea what’s going on with that. Apparently he’s not injured. He’s just way down the bench.

    • Flavor said, on November 9, 2021 at 5:33 am

they’re obviously going to trade him I’m just surprised it’s taking so long

      • zumiee said, on November 9, 2021 at 6:40 am

Yeah, they likely are afraid of him getting injured before they can trade him.

  21. willedav said, on November 9, 2021 at 7:21 am

OK I’ll restart Belt wars. What do Giants do if Belt says I don’t want your $18 mil and turns down QO? Let him ride off into sunset? Work out 2 yr deal, for x amount of $$? If you let Belt go, how do Giants handle 1b–in house or FA/trade?

    • djloo27 said, on November 9, 2021 at 7:53 am

I think he gets roughly the same deal as his buddy Crawford.
And they’ll ride off into the sunset together.
Surprised me that it wasn’t done during the season like Crawford’s was…

      • willedav said, on November 9, 2021 at 8:33 am

Hope you’re right. They don’t have to cover Posey $$ at all and it wouldn’t hurt to have more offense and D in lineup. As you said though, wonder what obstacle was to them not already getting this done–Belt or FO?

      • chipower9 said, on November 9, 2021 at 9:09 am

He will get signed either way, IMO. Z has said multiple times that Belt is a priority.

  22. alleykat69 said, on November 9, 2021 at 8:38 am

Maybe he couldn’t sign a new deal with his broken thumb?
To me I’m speed dialing the A’s about what it might take to get a deal done for Matt Olson and end your 1B issues with a perennial injured player in Belt.Olson’s contract is dirt cheap 5mil seriously? Yeah it won’t happen trading with the A’s even with Farhan’s connection with them but I can dream.Captain Stubbie will take the deal 2/32 mil deal and be thrilled before his next injury..

    • chipower9 said, on November 9, 2021 at 9:12 am

Isn’t happening. Zaidi has said Belt is a priority. Even with the missed games, Belt had the team’s highest OPS.

He will be back next year, and maybe (probably) for two. Book it.

  23. willedav said, on November 9, 2021 at 8:58 am

even missing 60 games Belt still led team in HRs and this was coming off fine 2020 short season as well.
Olson would be great but I doubt A’s would deal with Giants and hand guy of this quality across Bay to them.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 9, 2021 at 9:56 am

That’s more of an indictment of our hot and cold running offense. We haven’t had a 30 HR guy in how long?

How many other teams didn’t? But, yeah I see them keeping Belt. Esp with Buster retiring. These guys love their past and will give Belt 2 more years. Unless somewhere deep in Belt’s heart he wants to play in Houston.

      • willedav said, on November 9, 2021 at 12:03 pm

“hot and cold running offense” scored 2nd most runs per game in the NL, and led league in HRs. Having lost one good hitter in Posey for Bart, keeping an in house big bat seems like hella good idea to me. I’d still add one to OF too.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 9, 2021 at 1:09 pm

I did say I’m for keeping Belt . . . i’m just done with the platoon OF. I see no way they repeat their feat.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 9, 2021 at 9:00 pm

How’d that offense work out in the playoffs?

  24. alleykat69 said, on November 9, 2021 at 11:19 am

Speaking of Houston the Astros add to they’re reputation of being fools to only give Dusty a 1 year extension after he gets them into the W/S just ridiculous showing him “No Respect “

  25. chipower9 said, on November 9, 2021 at 12:03 pm

Only 98 days until pitchers and catchers report…

    Back to the window….

  26. djloo27 said, on November 9, 2021 at 3:55 pm

Well, we pretty much know what we have with Yaz, Slater and the Grave Duggar.
Wonder what they think they have with Wade.
This year he was a powerful platoon guy with a knack for late inning heroics.
    What’s the plan for him?

  27. Bozo said, on November 9, 2021 at 6:28 pm

Whatever the plan and whoever they get for the OF, please, please don’t let it be Joc Pederson.

  28. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 9, 2021 at 7:16 pm

With priority being given to pitching (2 new starters?), they might well just be looking at one new OFer, and that might be all they need. I’d love to see them get a new CFer who will be THE starter, no platooning, and a good lead-off hitter to boot. Doesn’t have to be a Willie Mays, doesn’t even have to be a Willie Wilson. A young Kenny Lofton type. Name Yaz as the starting RFer to go with the new starting CFer and put Wade as the main guy in LF. Keep Ruf for his bat plus fine with Duggar and Slater as extras. Not a drastic overhaul, just a set position player OF. But need that new CFer. There’s no one on the team who should be starting in CF. Infield, you’re looking at Belt starting at 1st, probably LaStella at 2nd (due to 2 more years on his contract) to be challenged by Thairo, Craw obviously starting at SS, and I guess Longo starting at 3rd until he’s not. (Personally, would love to see a new starting 3rd bagger as well but that will probably have to wait until Longo is long-gone the following year.) Bart starts at C, and there’s your *starting* position player lineup. Pitching… that’s another story altogether.

  29. willedav said, on November 9, 2021 at 8:14 pm

Like it or not, platooney ball worked last season. The Giants scored ton of runs (second most per game in league) and hit a lot of HRs Wade sucked vs. LHP so he was in/out of lineup to start but often brought in later once SP was lifted, to PH and take over. that’s how Kap rolls making use of his bench.
Minus Dickerson the OF of Yaz Ruf Slater and GD was above league average and with some help from coaching staff with year of background info I don’t see a good reason for them to fall apart. I thought Kap did great job with all the moving parts He rotated guys in to cover 1b when Belt was out and team didn’t miss a beat and did same thing with 2b. Giants won 107 games–why blow this up? Some of y’all awful hard to please.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 9, 2021 at 9:17 pm

Hard to please? Whatevs. Like the Dodgers have shown all the last 7 non-COVID seasons, and we just did, the regular season and winning the west doesn’t win you any trophies. We beat shitty teams to get there, but got out-pitched in the playoffs.

If you think all those guys do the same as last year, that ain’t realistic. Kap did great with a fair to poor lineup. One that no one thought would do anything, but they did. Till they couldn’t hit in the playoffs. They need at least one more everyday OFer if not two. I’d take Marte in a second as he’s at least an everyday player that can lead off. 2 OFers. Not blowing anything up.

  30. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 9, 2021 at 8:29 pm

Obviously they’re not going to “blow this up”, based on the regular season results. That’s why I said above “not a drastic overhaul, just a set position player OF.” My belief is that platoon ball is not sustainable throughout the post-season and I think there should be more regular starting position players, of course with flexibility with substitutions, pinch-hitting, spot starts, etc. There is just no way they repeat those win-loss numbers with the same platoon approach next year and it just doesn’t work in the post-season. Yes, no need to blow it up, but I do think there’s a need to stabilize a more regular starting lineup. That means cutting one OFer (Dick) and adding one new player, a starting CFer (and signing Belt, as another season of Wilmer and Wade and Ruf manning 1st base isn’t going to cut it). These are not huge changes in personnel, just a slightly different approach away from platoon ball.
