A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Niner Last Stand?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 15, 2021

Rams are only 3.5 favorites? If I wore a younger man’s clothes I would hammer that. But I’ve learned over the years that usually nothing is as it seems when it comes to betting on NFL. Especially when the public is hitting it hard. So i will just sit back and watch this one and hope that the Niners can somehow get off life support. It’s hard to root for SF though especially when I am so disappointed in them—from the top to the bottom.

NFL so hard to bet I’m the regular season with pretty damn close to parity in the league. Heard on Bill Simmons that going into this weekend something like the previous two weekends that the road teams had a winning record. That is insane!! The dogs have been consistent betting winners this years.

Agree…not a lot to like about the Niners now. They just suck in about every aspect of the game (if not every aspect).

I run a football league with some friends. We pick all the NFL games against the spread. I was in first place until this weekend (I had five going into tonight). While I am doing pretty good against the spread (89 – 60), not way I would touch tonight’s game, but I have the lambs as my pick (just zero confidence in the Niners).

On the baseball side of things, I saw an article discussing why Disco did not get a QO. Z says because he felt the guy should explore (and get) a multi year deal. Other teams interested per this article are the Tigers. Z said they would bring him back, and they continue discussions with his agent, but it all comes down to finances.

Only 94 days until pitchers and catchers report.

There was one QB yesterday who led his team on 4 drives of 90 yds for scores and had 3 of his own with 0 ints.
That’s right, the universally panned guy passed up til halfway in first round of draft, Mac Jones.
And some team did expose Colt McCoy for chump he is, unlike last week.

Not a lot of New England fans here, but the Pats have slowly and quietly started to gel. Belichick seems to be trusting Jones more and he’s been looking ok. Looked like Bills would run away with that division, andthey still might, but it’s looking more competitive now.

      • willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 8:00 am

Despite Jones perceived flaws, Belichek making him and team into a winner. Unlike, uh, others.

At this point with the 9ers, I just hope they don’t embarrass themselves on MNF.

Just saw an interview on the MLB channel with the Giants pitching coach, Andrew Bailey. They went over the way SF used the pen, Disco and how Buster retiring would affect the pitching staff. Not really related to the interview but after he said something about Buster buying into the new ways of pitching, I started wondering why starters can’t go three times through a lineup much anymore. Is it because the info the hitters have now, pitching fatigue, maybe the lack of a starters arsenal, or is it just a numbers game anymore? Going forward, I was wondering if we will see many guys who go deep in a game on a regular basis?

    • Winder said, on November 15, 2021 at 9:19 am

Bozo- I have thought about that myself. It seems like everyone throws hard nowadays but many just have one or two pitches that they can control. The hitters must know that. Rarely do you see a pitcher anymore with a full arsenal of pitches. Pitchers seems to specialize with one pitch for the most part and that means the bullpen is far more important so probably they will be used more and more as the league progresses. IMO

      • Bozo said, on November 15, 2021 at 10:49 am

Good points. Also, with teams going to the bullpen games more and more, I wonder if they will push starters in the minors to think and pitch more like long guys? It seems like teams will need to carry more pitchers if the trend continues, no wonder so many teams are looking for more multi-position players

  5. willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 8:58 am

Deadline for Belt to decide if he’s in or out on QO is Wed 17th.

The Niner situation is so depressing that it’s just sad, I’m not even mad anymore. Time for another change

  7. unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 10:59 am

I ain’t sad yet. I think with a new regime this team can be great next year. I just hoe they don’t lollygag and not make the switch off of Shanahan/Ryans.

Neither side of the ball is playing well. But they would only be starting over with the coaching staff. Not so much the players. Like when Harbaugh took over a talented but poorly coached team from Aluminum Mike and got them winning in a hurry.

      Got replacements in mind?
BTW, Chuck, The Hand only sold weed…

      • Winder said, on November 15, 2021 at 11:49 am

‘Got any replacements in mind’ That is a good question. At the moment it’s hard to tell who might be available and to which direction they want the offense and defense to take. Since we have a new mobile QB I would like to see more emphasis on the passing game and the defense go back to a standard 3/ 4. I don’t believe any defenses strictly stay standard they always seem to throw wrinkles with DE’s and OLB’s. We need to find coaches/players who are able to make adjustments on the fly.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm

Ahhh. Wasn’t sure. Yeah, 70s weed was crap until California sensimilla popped up around in 1977. Know a guy who started growing down in Big Sur in 1977 and is still going strong up north. i stopped smoking it in the mid 80s.

  8. alleykat69 said, on November 15, 2021 at 11:04 am

Yeah Winder it’s very frustrating and Shanahan has lost the locker room imo. I’m hoping for Lance to get in there maybe tonight? and don’t look back, it’s time to move on and play the draft picks!
One in particular is my FF player Elijah Mitchell who’s establishing himself as a top back in this league over time if they don’t fuck with him also!the only real draft pick that gets it with heart and desire and extremely tough to tackle, players on other teams have said as much how explosive and slippery with his speed he is to bring down..
Shout out to Chase Young from the WFT who suffered a season ending torn ACL injury yesterday in there upset win over the Buccaneers,a true talent in the league ( even if this year has been terrible for there defense with all that 1st rd DL talent that never meshed together) and Young was out signing autographs to every military person prior to the game till he needed a new sharpie.Did it also in a previous game, that was pouring rain, and he was out there when he could of stayed in the tunnel!! Class act for a 22 year old, hoping for a speedy recovery Chase!!

    • Winder said, on November 15, 2021 at 11:59 am

Kat OSU sure puts out some good DE’s recently. I hope it’s not a bad tear for Chase’s sake.

  9. unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 11:13 am

The players at least are showing a front of being in step with the coaches as of now. There is no infighting apparent to us outsiders, anyway. But I think if this is a blowout, there will be a reckoning. This poor play can’t last through the season without some kind of fallout.

    • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 12:47 pm

In the NFL, your team has no shot if your QB is just average; if he sucks, you are doomed to dogmeat. That’s one reason I don’t pay much attention to NFL anymore, along with the penalties and reviews making it unwatchable. Brady’s quality dragged New England for years into the playoffs — with mostly no-name receivers, plus an always good to very good O line, and fair to good, but rarely dominating D.
Niners haven’t had a decent QB since Garcia. A throwing QB. That’s 25 years. Kapernick was an anomaly until the defensive coordinators figured him out. Alex Smith was never a really good QB, he suffered from a succession of bad coaches with SF, multiple OCs, crap receivers, plus he flat never was really above average. Jimmy G is just the next in line of poor to fair Niner QBs. Why SF continues to trot him out there is beyond me. When Jimmy G got hurt again earlier this season, that kid Lance came in and apparently threw balls in one half nobody’d every seen Jimmy G throw. Now that their Defense sucks, the Niner offensive problem is magnified.
At least baseball is not so massively dependent on one player, one position for your team’s good/bad fortune…

      • chipower9 said, on November 15, 2021 at 12:56 pm

Jimmy G took them to the super bowl, and was one overthrow away from the Niners winning that super bowl. I do not think you need a franchise QB to win it all in the NFL, especially if you have a great run game and D.

And I am not a big JG fan, but I do think he is better than “poor” or “fair.”

      • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 2:19 pm

Chi, I’ll defer to Unca on his view of Jimmy G.
I don’t pay close attention any more to the Niners, or see their games, I just read and hear sports talk.
That said, I do know that Jimmy G didn’t throw much at all in the 2019 playoff games before the SB, Shanahan let the running game win those games. Consensus seems to be Jimmy has regressed since then, plus he’s hurt a lot…

      • willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 2:52 pm

Niners D has been issue for quite some time, even during SB run and imo that’s who cost them the SB, not JG. They were fine for 3 quarters and then got torched, reminding me of what happened to Saleh’s D vs. Russell Wilson. They’d be OK for maybe a half and then he destroyed them. They were fortunate enough to stop him by inches in Seattle end of season game, which led them to playoff success and Wilson bombing out on road.
And btw Saleh’s Jets have given up 175 points in last 4 losses.

there are plenty of SB winning QBs that were decidedly average but still own the ring. It can be done and Tampa D last season was tremendous.

  10. willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 12:15 pm

Winder, I was watching San Diego St.-Nevada game late Saturday, and Aztecs for some time have played 3-3-5 (per Rocky Long their former coach). their D won game vs good QB Carson Strong, defending 3 straight passes when Pack only needed 2 yds for first down, 25 yrds away from FG that would have won them the game and division lead.

Lot of college teams have a hybrid defensive athlete that is a LB/Safety. Big enough to be a tackler on jet sweeps or running plays but fast enough to cover running backs or TEs on passing plays in spread offenses. Also potential blitzer that can get to QB quickly.

    • Winder said, on November 15, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Yes, the game has changed and it’s hard to find the Bowman’s and Willis’s. I like the idea of having 5 db’s when you can move a Safety up to cover the tight ends and the mid level throws. Speed is important but if they can’t tackle then it’s a problem. I don’t believe there is a perfect defensive solution to cover every team but speed and tackling can make up for a lot. We haven’t drafted very well in the Safety/ DB areas.

Look, Shanny isn’t going ANYWHERE. York is the biggest pussy on the planet. There is no WAY he’s hitting the re-set button again. He’s going to justify it by saying Lance is waiting in the wings. Save this post. 100% chance BOTH Shanny and Lynch are back next year. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT

    • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 12:58 pm

Weren’t the Niners paying Shanahan, and the prior two fired dipstick HCs all as the same time for a couple of years? The Yorks aren’t going to do that again for a while. The Dubs were crap franchise for two decades plus because of a bad owner. Lacob comes in and boom — champs within what, 4 years? And a 5 year run to the finals, with 3 trophies. Except for the Harbaugh blip, and this 2019 one off, the Niners have been pretty much garbage since Eddie D got caught playing fuzzy money games in Looziana. It’s all about ownership in the pro leagues…

    • Winder said, on November 15, 2021 at 1:22 pm

I think you are right also. I don’t think a mid-season change would be helpful at all. But we definitely have to explore the coaching market in the off-season. A lot of it probably depends on who is whispering in Jed’s ear. Maybe we just take for granted we will whiff another draft next year.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 2:20 pm

The uproar around a failed season this year will bring about a coaching change. This was supposed to be a a Super Bowl contender that has completely shit the bed. If they go 5-12, bye bye Shanny.

  12. chipower9 said, on November 15, 2021 at 12:54 pm

I agree with Flav re: Shanny and Lynch. No way in hell either are canned this year. And I am not a fan of changing the head coach or GM mid-season. I think you will see some changes in some of the coordinators, though.

    • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 1:11 pm

Isn’t Fangio on the hot seat in Denver? They could bring him back to the Niners as DC next season. The current guy may not be up to the job…

      • Winder said, on November 15, 2021 at 1:23 pm

Not really sure he would want to work for Jed again but if he did that would be a start.

    • Flavor said, on November 15, 2021 at 1:38 pm

Everyone has to remember the hot seat Jed was on after multiple failed head coaches. Shanny took them to the damn SB. No fucking way Jed bails on him now, he can’t handle the heat of looking for a new guy and/or hiring a new guy. Especially with Lance in the wings. Jed’s just going to wait. Book it.

      • Flavor said, on November 15, 2021 at 1:39 pm

Jed can’t handle the pressure of hiring a new guy. That’s the bottom line. He also love Shanny and he owes him a shit ton of money still. Shanny stays.

  13. unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 2:07 pm

Harbaugh was gone 2 years after HE reached the Super Bowl. Shanahan has had 5 years and we are back where we started. Flailing in the dark with no direction.

If this team ends up 7-10, 6-11, or 5-12, Shanny is gone. Deservedly so. Guaran-goddamn-teed. And Lynch won’t go anywhere.

  14. snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 2:30 pm

So, I think Wednesday is the deadline for Belt to accept the Giants QO.
If he rejects, he’s a FA.
That does not mean, from what I’ve read, that SF couldn’t thereafter still sign him as a FA to a multi-year deal.
But, if they did, after another team gave him an offer as a FA, the Giants would lose their second-highest Draft pick in 2022, plus $500,000 in international signing pool space. So, if Belt rejects the Giants tomorrow, he must have something in the bag on a multi-year offer from another team(s), and he’s likely as good as gone. From all that, seems to me the Giants QO means they won’t be crestfallen if he leaves for another team, he’s more replaceable and more injury prone than Crawford…

    • chipower9 said, on November 15, 2021 at 3:17 pm

Not true. If Belt declines the QO and signs elsewhere, the Giants get a compensatory pick. But they can also sign him as a FA. Z has said they have had multiple (and recent) conversations with his agent.

      • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 4:09 pm

I get the compensatory pick, Chi.
But, I think I read where if he rejects the QO, but ultimately then signs with Giants, they get dinged, as I said.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 3:17 pm

Their mess is bigger than a one-year fix. Ours isn’t. Fuck. I’d be all for Shanny getting canned and hiring Saleh as head coach. As long as he hands the offense to someone who can utilize Trey Lance.

    • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 4:36 pm

Jets fans must be even more delusional than A’s fans.
Sometime I hear these national sportstalk shows and the talking heads start discussing the Jets. I’m thinking then that does any listener in the rest of the US outside of the NY metro who is not a native NYer give a crap about the Jets? Their claim to fame happened when Namath was wearing pantyhose. Are the Jets not the worst franchise in the NFL over the longest time? Cleveland maybe is in the running…

  16. willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 3:01 pm

I’m sure you’re right, Belt would be easiest to replace. Wade Ruf Flores did great job last year and Giants hardly missed a beat without him, at least during regular season.
But, if Wade is 1b, then they need more OFs.
I guess this is Belt’s doing, and either he wants to move on (despite being self proclaimed Captain) or it’s a disagreement over length, with Belt wanting security of 3 or more. Z has said from multiple sources signing Belt is a priority…maybe not so much for Belt himself and as you say he might have fallback or two lined up

    • unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 3:21 pm

lf Belt wants to play hardball, let him walk. I’d think he’d want to stick around on a deal like Craw’s as he’s made a ton of money here and can’t feeel like he’s been slighted, but who knows? He could pull a Bummie and get closer to home, or to what he wants.

      • snarkk said, on November 15, 2021 at 4:11 pm

I don’t know if Astros or Rangers could use him, probably Rangers more. He can take a deal from them at 13% less money than the Giants can offer over same period due to CA state tax, and still be just as well off…

  18. willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 4:03 pm

Shout out to Lions running back Jermar Jefferson, who had 28 yd run for TD but hurt his ankle and might be out. He played for Oregon St., and I saw him as a true freshman run for 250 vs. Arizona St. That year he had 1380 yds and 12 TDs. Left after junior (2020) 6 game Covid season with over 800 yrds and 6 TDs.

Senior year he played HS ball for Narbonne of Harbor City, south LA. Narbonne’s girls b-ball won State Title or 2 and were big rivals of local powerhouse Archbishop Mitty. Team I coached played a tournament there on a weekend in Fall once, and locals advised it wasn’t cool area to hang around in afterwards, so we drove back to hotel for post game festivities at nearby Hawaiian restaurant.

  19. willedav said, on November 15, 2021 at 4:43 pm

Props to Kendrick Bourne too. Caught 4 passes for 98 and TD from Mac Jones. TD was great leaping grab btw 2 defenders.

  20. Flavor said, on November 15, 2021 at 5:17 pm

Can’t compare Harbs and Shanny. First.of all, Harbs wanted to go. And he hated Jed. After he left Jed looked like a complete fool with Tomsula and then the absurd chip Kelly. He hit on shanny and he loved no longer having the heat on him about his shitty hires. He extended shanny and lynch waaaaaay to long but what’s done is done. And with Lance in the offing there’s no way pussy Jed goes through that again. Like I said, save this post. Shanny stays next year no matter what their record is this year.

With :18 left in the half, that’s a bizarre call. Even if they get a first down, they have no more than two plays left to try for a TD. So that play was either TD or bust. They should’ve taken the FG.

  35. unca_chuck said, on November 15, 2021 at 6:48 pm

They had their timeouts so they had a chance to run 3 plays. Man, I’m just glad to see that 3 and out. THe Rams adjusted their defense by bringing in an extra down lineman to stop the run. We need to adjust by throwing.

Shanny may have saved his season, but this team needs to come out and play like this every week.

Something to build on, that was fun.

This was the first game they played well all the way through. Still need the pass rush to improve. Can’t figure why they trade for a guy 2 weeks ago who hasn’t set foot on the field for us.

Great win and obviously needed in a big way!
Think Shanny might of caught the Rams off guard lining Deebo in the backfield a lot confusing them as he found space to run off of it..
Great play by a questionable coming in in Jimmy Ward.. Loved his comment when asked about Deebo after the game..Oh man 19 reasons to be excited.

That 4th down play may be the play that saves the season for the Niners. They have a chance to get back to .500 next week against the Jags, and that’s where everyone is in the NFC. The Niners are 9th out of the 7 teams that make the playoffs. Tied with the Vikings (who we play) and one game behind the Panthers. Who we play.

If nothing else it’s always great to have the Seahawks looking up from the bottom for a change..
