A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Big Game Day!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 20, 2021

Eh, to be honest this game has felt *bigger* in the past. Stanford regularly treats Cal like the doormat they are having won the last 10 of 11 Big Games. This year might be different because Stanford sucks. Cal is a complete mess dealing with Covid outbreaks. The Cardinal should be getting back Tanner McKee at QB and that’s really their only chance to win this game.

Personally I’m looking more forward to the Niner/Jax game which shows you how much excitement I have for today’s Big Game. I’m going to a tailgate but I’m not going inside the stadium.

    And who can forget….

    • zumiee said, on November 20, 2021 at 7:06 am

A couple of forward laterals and a guy who had his knee down, but still….

      complete and utter bullshit.

  2. Flavor said, on November 20, 2021 at 7:18 am

I think we’ve done this before but how many of us were at the ’82 big game? That’s the day I started hating Cal fans. Classless rubes.

plenty of them on both sides of any rivalry. Used to coach a girl in middle school youth group ball who later helped me there on weekends as an assistant while she played for HS team, great kid. Both her parents met at Cal. She told me once there isn’t anything red in their entire house.

One of the best calls ever by Joe Starkey. ‘THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!!!” My bro in law (who graduated from Cal in ’79) left with my sister 10 seconds before it happened and missed it.

Ouch that’s rough figuring it out in the parking lot that his Bears pulled it out on that BS but pretty cool play anyway! Wonder if that trombone player besides needing a new trombone needed dental work as well after getting trucked in the endzone by Monds??

That’s my favorite rivalry in all of sports. I guess it’s still a big deal but when I was a kid it was a real big deal. They used to have a bonfire during the week before but i am pretty sure that doesn’t happen anymore.

      Better than USC-UCLA?
I got to see some of that one up close.
      Pretty heavy…

      • alleykat69 said, on November 20, 2021 at 8:22 am

Yeah they were pretty good too Loo, but Northern California hated anything Southern California, of course that goes with out saying between Giants/Dodgers rivalry!!

Did like one thing about USC when they would chant out this line going to a commercial break:
“Time out for USC we gotta pants the referee da da da dah”

      • Winder said, on November 20, 2021 at 8:39 am

To me yes but when UCLA USC played it was special also. Plus they always showed that on TV. I also liked the Texas/Oklahoma game. Good stuff. I just grew up a Stanford fan and it’s never left me.

      • alleykat69 said, on November 20, 2021 at 9:03 am

Yeah Winder I could never get enough of watching Texas/Oklahoma games. The greatest imo the Legendary Keith Jackson calling the action( he was born to be a college football announcer)with his southern drawl and Oh Nellie slang, were awesome..
Then he starts out with “We got a barn burner in Oklahoma today with the Sooners and the Longhorns just fires up everyone as they lead into showing Bevo the massive Longhorn as they try and hold him back with 2 guys with ropes, and the Sooner covered wagon circling the field out of control doesn’t get much better!

      • Winder said, on November 20, 2021 at 9:19 am

Kat- also during the 70’s Nebraska was a true powerhouse and when the played Ok/Tex it was a huge game. One they always showed also is the Mich/OSU game that was a fun one to watch also. I forgot who ND’s big rivalry was but i think it was USC.

      • alleykat69 said, on November 20, 2021 at 12:38 pm

Yeah I forgot to mention Nebraska with Johnny Rodgers? who was phenomenal, coach Osborne against Coach Darrel Royal when they ran the wishbone with 3 running backs. These coaches were all legendary!!
The powerhouses were Nebraska/Texas,Michigan& Ohio St ( Woody against Bo) and Penn St (Paterno)were must watch TV back then plus some great football by the Pac 8 back then

Only went to Stanford games, and mostly the raging bonfires 🔥 that we’re awesome 👏
Rather party on this side of the bridge then over in Berserkly!(Though Berkeley had the advantage of the outdoor Greek Amphitheater where I went to many great concerts and the sound in that bowl was amazingly good) Lake Lagunita was a great spot too!
Those rallies with the players and of course the hot cheerleaders 📣 always fired up the huge crowd.
Sure wouldn’t get those days back with covid now, so it’s just remembered in my fading memory bank circuits nowadays…

Greatest play in college football history and a fitting end to the Elway era at Snodfart.

        I never even tried…

  8. mrsprtdude said, on November 20, 2021 at 9:50 am

Amazing ending that would be ruined now with replay (unless you are a Stanford fan:)
It was Elway’s fault. A recap showed he called timeout with the extra time on the clock. Of course no one remembers, but he was watching time tick off. If he waited until 2-3 seconds left vs 8 there would have been no kick off.

Listened to the radio call with my mom our kitchen in WC. Such a great memory!

stanford QB McKee is pretty good but they have had major issues stopping running game. HS buddies of mine were at Utah game and left at halftime when they were down like 38-0. Only guy having worse year than Shaw might be Sarkisian, as his Horns are trailing West Va 28-17 end of 3rd.

  10. unca_chuck said, on November 20, 2021 at 12:16 pm

Iirc it took like 10 minutes for the refs to make the call that the TD stood.

Strong rumor that Wilcox is leaving Cal to Udub. Cal has been hammered by Covid for two seasons, he’s livid with the Berkeley city health department. Cal lost to Arizona because 24 players had to quarantine including QB and half the offensive starters. I predicted 3 years ago he was too good to stay more than 5-6 years. He was an assistant at UW before…

    • willedav said, on November 20, 2021 at 3:25 pm

Hope not. Berkeley is tough place to coach football–hasn’t been much success there since Tedford. Shaw had won 9 Axe games in a row before losing in 2019, then won it back last season. Also bad time to be looking with many more traditional football schools (like USC among others) also looking, like Huskies.

  12. willedav said, on November 20, 2021 at 4:34 pm

    comedy of errors so far.
Stanford first pass is picked off.
Next play Cal running back fumbles deep in own territory.
Stanford moves ball to 2, and on 4th down QB goes nowhere.
Cal drives all the way to Stanford 3 yd line, but after personal foul moves ball back, throws int in end zone.
3 turnovers in less than 10 minutes of football.

    • Flavor said, on November 20, 2021 at 4:49 pm

both these teams are terrible. Praying Shaw gets fired but know it’s unlikely to happen. He doesn’t know how to recruit anymore.

      • Winder said, on November 20, 2021 at 6:10 pm

That is sad since both schools have a rich history. But they both have stunk it up before. Usually they change coaches if it gets to bad.

      • willedav said, on November 20, 2021 at 6:12 pm

Surprised both his lines are so bad. Cal does have vet senior QB, who is good runner as well as passer. Cards guy is only a soph and forces ball. Doesn’t run very well either. There is talent there but play calling very suspect in red zone. Turned down 2 chip shot FGs and then ran dumb plays inside 5 that didn’t work.
Agree, Shaw will leave when he wants to.

  13. willedav said, on November 20, 2021 at 6:22 pm

Rushing yds 198-18 mid 3rd Q. Cal has over 400 yds of offense, Cards less than 200.
Meanwhile Utes blowing out Oregon 28-0, so that ends any top ranking for Ducks.

  14. Flavor said, on November 20, 2021 at 6:47 pm

    this is outrageous.

  15. zumiee said, on November 20, 2021 at 7:43 pm

One of the crazy things about that ‘82 play is that, because of a personnel screw-up, Cal only had 9 players on the field to return that kick-off. Ironically, it helped Cal with spacing or whatever.

  16. snarkk said, on November 20, 2021 at 8:17 pm

Cal blows up Stanfoo, big time.
    Axe back to Berkeley.
Great showing for Cal fans and “rubes”, took over half the stadium.
Snooty Stanfoo fans, if you can call them that, rarely show up in numbers at home for their own team, even when it’s good — and this one stinks.
    Go Bears !!!!

  17. djloo27 said, on November 20, 2021 at 8:54 pm

How the hell is this possible?
I think this is going to be the next Gabby Petitto type case in terms of media attention and public obsession.
    An accident???

Loo I remember the USC stall games vs. Alcindor. Mack Calvin was good little guy too, mostly in ABA. SC had some good players, just nothing like UCLA. One from 70s that later played briefly for Warriors and then helped Sonics get a title was Gus Williams. Man he was cool player, just smooth 1 on 1 moves and great shooter. Came to GS year after they won it then they let him leave. NY guy too from Mt. Vernon.

    • willedav said, on November 21, 2021 at 8:29 am

Repercussions of stall ball still exist today. Men’s game at college and HS level (at least locally in Calif) have longer shot clock for men than women (35 vs. 30), due to coaches resistance at admin level. I think both still have 10 second rule for getting ball across half court. Dunno why men couldn’t go to 30 second shot clock either.

Women’s college game (like pros) has a rule I wish men would adopt. Instead of 20 minute halves they go 10 minute quarters, with foul counts (5 for bonus) restarting every quarter. Breaks game up a bit and action always heats up at end of each.

someone i’ve read lot about and come to respect, Red Auerbach, helped initiate 24 second clock in NBA.

      • Macdog said, on November 21, 2021 at 9:30 am

High school hoops in Jersey still doesn’t have a shot clock, it’s ridiculous.

      • Winder said, on November 21, 2021 at 9:57 am

I guess the most physically fit team usually wins.
