Be Thankful
Fun week coming up after a couple of days of work–family, friends, food, football, folf and feers. Er, uh, golf and beers. Either way, can’t wait. People like to crap on the T-giving games but you fire up 20 teams at draftkings and those are 3 goddamn super bowls right there.
Also, an under the radar move: I’m staying home this week.
Always loved the recipe shares that Twinfan and Stix inspired over the holidays. Sadly there might be a greater chance that Twin shares his this Thursday. Stix is truly flummoxed by the login process here at Casa de Flapa. Whatever. I hope he writes me the longest of emails, I will share it if he does….
and just like that, I check my inbox and it’s a thanksgiving day miracle! I don’t understand a goddamn thing he’s talking about here but it’s fun to read his words

Flav: Ran into a medical situation back in July. Hospitalized six days and the recovery took a while. Realized then that it would not be possible to finish demolishing the old kitchen and build a new one before the weather went south. After a couple of false starts and some jiggling around, I found this apartment opening in my original hometown, just six miles from the place. Thus, its convenience and comfort through the cold months and sufficient indoor time to catch up on a lot of delayed projects.
Still carving in that Wizard Willow and soon to publish “The Cosmographic States of America” in this symbol-based alphabet I’ve been concocting over the past 45 years. Graphics look satisfactory and the entirety of the original art has been scanned with print-outs and a press-ready computerized capture. Notion now is a 500 copy limited edition featuring all 50 states with letters cast into transmutational graphic presentation. Highly pictographic, so some of the states (California included in that set) are not horizontal in their flow, but flow along vertically or at an angle. Hard to describe in a few words, but will soon look for a camera and a printer to hook up to the iMac, so I can share a few images here and there.
Also needing to access various art, graphics and literary sites as well as merchandising platforms such as Etsy and possibly Facebook and Amazon. With it being a limited edition, there may be a need to be very strategic in distribution as should it take off like some early viewers expect, a standard publishing house may be in order. If everything falls into place, the graphic concepts could go international. Reasoning behind that is a future development which strikes me as probable over time, as the Latin and ultimately Phoenician-based alphabet we use everyday here in the U.S. is both purely abstract and is culturally limited to the Western world. Ultimately, I feel there will develop a worldwide, symbol-based,system, yet, being also based on a transliteration of our current alphabet, will be limited (initially at least) to the 26 letters which we currently use,
Confused? Our world is in transition and changes now occur at exponential rates. Many people are tuning in to the transitions. So if nothing else comes from this ambitious venture its quite possible that commercial applications will find their ways into fields like tee-shirts, caps, stickers and other graphic adventures. Texans, Arizonans, Montanans and Michiganders might well dig how their states look in Cosmografix. Rhode Island and Hawaii do not strike me as knockouts. But you can’t win em all. Washington, Cali, Wisconsin and Vermont look pretty exciting and so does my home state of Minnesota. Its all in the interplay of those symbols and which letters get particularly stressed.
Looks like I’m hitting you with more than you requested, so when those copyrighted images are available I’ll plan on sending you a sample or two.
-stix
Classic Stix right there. In a number of the letters he sent me while he was locked-up, he mentioned the picto-alphabet. If he gets the damned thing published, I will be one of the first in line to buy a copy.
Ironically Stix is proposing a “one-world alphabet” when he’s warned against “one-world government” in the past.
Has Stix ever sent details of his problems logging in? I don’t recall what changed that he was able to be on here for awhile and now he can’t get in. I guess screen prints or text photos are out of the question, but I was wondering if he ever sent any details of his steps out to anyone?
XOOT probably knows the most about it, he talks to him on the phone
Most of us have had issues with WP and changed screen names to get back in. Has he tried doing that, and just going back on with different name altogether?
Friend of mine is quite a whiz in kitchen and will be hosting I think small family gathering. She has nice veg garden and some fruit trees and is planning some home made gnocchi and other things for T Day, to be paired with different wines I guess.
Lions have played better recently, and Cowboys got held in check by KC defense. Football should be fun and there is usually b-ball on as well.
Where I’ve gone in past is Godfather all day. Often various people who came for dinner went out to movie later.
Flav, did you ever watch the original?
here’s a question for Paul (in Asia): Why is everyone still in lockdown? What percentage of the pop is vaxxed? And what has happened to that economy for a country that’s been on lockdown for 2+ years?
Craig, at this time, here in Ho Chi Minh City, lockdown finished last month, so we can go out again, but there’s not much to do, as most things are still closed. Coffee shops, some restaurants are open, no alcohol sales. Everything else (bars, spas, schools, cinemas, etc.) is still closed. This country was very late getting vaccines and is still scrambling and relying on donations, and this city got clobbered, so they focused all vaxxing in the 2 big cities, here in Saigon, and up north in Hanoi. I don’t know the latest stats, but in Saigon, the vax rate is very high, so we’ve been allowed to shift from zero Covid to “live with the virus”. But in other places around the country, the vax rate is very low, and there are still lockdowns happening elsewhere. So, not much point in going anywhere. But at least the barricades are down and I can get food deliveries. Everyone is just hoping lockdowns don’t return if cases continue to increase again.
You asked about the economy. Yeah, it’s been pretty brutal for many people, with no work and no money. They’re starting one of those tourism programs jetting in people from selected countries who are fully vaxxed, that whole “sandbox” approach thing. A couple hundred S. Koreans just arrived somewhere, Danang, I think, and groups of Russians coming in soon too. Just something to get the economy going again with int’l arrivals. But that might not work; visitors can only stay at one of a few 5 star hotels, can’t leave the premises, must stay with the booked group, etc. And only people working in those few places will benefit from the arrivals. Not counting gov’t officials, of course,
I think Stix has a Mac so it should make it a little easier to get on. It would be a kick to try a zoom call w/him. It shouldn’t be that hard to get on. My only problem is getting on w/my phone.
Paul– thanks for detailed update. Your FB post with the empty balcony was powerful
That was a very cool post. I hope Paul crosses paths with the neighbor in the future.
One thing I am very thankful for is a new joy and excitement with the Warriors. After getting KD and cruising to a couple easy titles and then injuries and loss to the Raptors and then two mediocre injury filled years, my joy in the Warriors had fallen away. I am completely jacked for this year and this team and seeing the Pooles and GP Jr emerge. Then the joy of being able to see Klay come back will be quite emotional. Iggy looks completely reborn and Dray has a new found love for the game. It has all made me completely enthused for this season.
I was about to ask the Bay Area Flap if there any good Giants rumors waiting and then saw this moments ago:
Giants In Discussions With Alex Cobb
November 22nd, 2021 at 12:07pm CST • By Steve Adams
The Giants are in talks with free-agent righty Alex Cobb and appear to be making a “strong push” to sign the veteran righty, tweets Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link). Cobb is represented by the Beverly Hills Sports Council.
If a deal is indeed finalized, Cobb would fill one of four rotation vacancies for a San Francisco club that saw each of Kevin Gausman, Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani and Johnny Cueto reach free agency at season’s end.
Cobb would be a total Farhan type of target. I could see a Webb-DeSclafani-Wood-Cobb and grabbing some other available lefty rotation and letting Gausman sign a big deal elsewhere.
Um, something that may be of interest to select few here:
MCC site column Nov 20 by one Steven Kennedy titled—Steven Duggar is my kind of guy.
subtitled “Came up clutch in some big moments for the Giants in 2021. I’m a fan. I hope he sticks around.”
complete with twitter highlights, fwiw
underwhelming….
Yeah, but the nickname possibilities are promising…
Stolen from Twitter: We’d have a Cobb-Webb tandem.
I don’t even know WhoTF this guy Cobb is.
But if ZMan signs him, I’m in…
Maybe I can make some money somehow getting a twitter account and just send out some crap regularly on which team(s) are talking with which FAs. Seems like anything goes, and who cares if these guys are right or wrong on these “news” items, that are probably fed by agents…
probably?
This was also on MLBTR that seems to be pretty legit…
Ready to see some real action soon…before the CBA expires…
Per MLBTRs: “The Giants have traded right-handed reliever Jay Jackson to the Braves in exchange for cash or a player to be named later, per a pair of team announcements. San Francisco designated Jackson for assignment on Friday while setting their 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 protection deadline. Fellow right-hander Yoan Lopez was designated for assignment in a corresponding move, per the Braves.”
.
I’d prefer Tex Cobb. He can be our backup captain when Belt goes down. Who can forget his role in Police Academy 5? or 4 or 3.
Tex: “I love acting. It’s easy for me. All you do is look in the camera, smile, and lie with charm. I learned how to do that watching Don King promote fights.”
Hah!
Duggar is strictly bench/d-replacement material. I wonder if any of this lock-out / holdout shit is gonna deal with expanding rosters a couple players.
The way pitching is heading (14-15 pitchers on staff), there will be no more room for position players on the bench.
I’m up for expanding rosters to 28 or even 30. They can argue about service time starting, and all that crap. But, you have to designate 26 or 27 per each game as active. Kind of like football. The 3 batter minimum per pitcher will keep the pitching musical chairs to a minimum, and allow for more position players. Or, by rule have Max 13 or 14 pitchers on any one game’s “active” roster. One thing I really hate is when a player is injured and they keep the guy active, but he can’t play for a few games, so the team is one man down vs. the other team for a couple of games. That’s ridiculous. That IL 10 day rule should be made more flexible or just get rid of the time limiation, which would work hand in hand with an expanded daily “available” roster …
teams are allowed a taxi squad (I think it was 3 players) to carry with them on road games. Giants had this for playoff series vs. LA too. In case player got hurt they wouldn’t have to pull someone from Sac.
I’d read there might be a restriction on how many pitchers you can carry, but I think that would just mean more trips to IL. Doubt owners expand rosters and have to pay more ML salaries, even minimum. Their first proposal would have capped $$ for lux tax at $180 mil per team, way less than it currently is.
Yeah, I think just expanding a couple more to 27 would even be good. 14 pitchers and 13 position guys gives a team some flexibility. 13 – 12 just isn’t enough given the state of pitching what with openers and 5 inning starts.
Raftery doing Seton Hall vs. Ohio St. game in florida tourney. Maui (from Vegas) on today too. Oregon plays tonight, wonder if Walton will be there.
Pav tweets: The Giants signed Anthony DeSclafani to a three year deal.
Anthony DeSclafani gets three years and $36 million, he will make $12 million each in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
The Giants DFA’d Alex Dickerson to clear a roster spot for DeSclafani.
Excellent news!
And maybe Wood too, I think I just heard…
Saw that too.
Said this a month ago that this was the way they’d go. They don’t want to take a flier on Gasman but they’d get DeScaffolding and Morning Wood. I’m cool with these moves.
Clint Frazier anyone? The Cranks just DFAed him. Our next Sockman? heh heh. Kidding.
Morning Wood. 2 years/$10 mill.
RIP Dusty
Morning,Noon, are Night, Wood is always a good thing!
Good to have 2 starters back for now locked in for 2years Wood,3 years T-Bone for continuity with Webb!
Still like Gausman back as well, his stats still prove he’s a solid pitcher, he’s been loyal, took the one year deal last year, likes pitching here so let’s bring the band back, they did it with the B/C except for Posey’s retirement..
Ooops:

How does everyone in the arena miss a free throw?
The Dick had season-long hitting ED and had to be let go — no surprise there…
Yes, no one likes a limp Dick.
Hall Ohio State game was really good. Hall came from 12 down second half to tie it up in last seconds, off steal and layup. Last play was 3 with 2 seconds left for W, 79-76. SH guards really tough, Aiken and Rhoden (29 points).
Yes good news on pitching for SF and Dickerson bound to be odd man out in OF. Sounds more and more like they are bringing back most of who they had 2021.
Just want one OF. We are kicking the tires on Marte.
Want to get younger in the OF Chuck,Marte is 33
Bryant and Castellanos are 29 with a hell of a lot more power. No teams give a shit about SB’s anymore sadly it’s a lost art..Yeah his speed is nice in the outfield, but it won’t be used much stealing bases, it’s just not what they do..
Doesn’t matter. He gets a 2 year deal and we kick him if the Bishop Bros make headway. Or Ramos.
SF Gate is the only place I can find that says the Wood deal is officially done…
Passan:
It doesn’t appear the Wood deal is finalized. Speaking to reporters about the DeSclafani agreement, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi declined to comment on pitchers connected to San Francisco in “rumors” — that included Wood.
“I won’t comment on anyone specifically,” Zaidi said. “But I will say — we’ve talked about this a lot over the last few years — we’re not shopping for a five-man rotation. We’re shopping for 162 games started. That can take on different forms. But I imagine that even after this (DeSclafani) signing, we’ll continue to be active in that space.”
maybe not such good night to be Giants fan.
Condy Rice is killin it with the Mannings.
Knows her stuff!
Is that the espn2 thing? Don’t have espn any more
Yes it is, Unca Chuck…
Is it any good?
I had that idea years ago to announce games with a buddy of mine kinda in the Howard Stern method of swearing, nonsequitors and just general inanity. He’s from Jersey. Woulda been great…
Z said “We’re not shopping for a five-man rotation. We’re shopping for 162 games started.” Hope they’re also considering another potential 19 or 20 post-season games started…
You do have to get through 162 just to get there. Playoffs don’t need more than 3 SPs. Isn’t that all Braves had?
Yes, of course. But the ‘rotation’ also needs 3, maybe 4, starters who perform well in post-season. It’s not always the same. I’d rather have 3 solid post-season starters than 5 or 6 guys who go 2 or 3 innings. That’s just me. I hate platoony ball and also hate the trend of starting with relievers (I don’t even remember what they call it, there’s a name for it). I guess I’m more old-school than I thought.
Openers?
Yes, thank you, “openers”, it just popped into my head. Sheesh. What a drag it is getting old. Anyway, “opener” and “starter” sound the same. But they’re not, at all.
Alyssa Nakken and Rob Abel got married few days ago. Pic featuring some co workers on SF Giants Twitter.
Most sports allow players to exit and re-enter a game, of course. Baseball doesn’t. It could be argued that using your entire roster effectively in baseball is the more strategically interesting challenge. The fact that the substitutions are largely based on left/right match ups seems incidental to appreciating the stratagems.
It definitely is a more strategically interesting challenge. One year in Little League about 100 years ago, I was the team’s best starting pitcher. There was a playoff game, I started… but I was recovering from a bad case of tonsilitis and got tired round about the 3rd inning. Coach Jiggs took me out with a lead. Subsequent pitchers blew the lead, so Jiggs tried to bring me back in. Other coach said no, you can’t do that, Jiggs said “watch me”. Other coach said “I will play this game under protest”. Jiggs relented. Didn’t matter anyway, we ended up losing the game. I remember being interested to see how that would’ve played out…
Maybe Jiggs should’ve moved you to RF instead of taking you out for good.
Yeah, that might’ve been the correct strategy at the time. I think he thought I was cooked. I was spitting up blood. But I was still throwing heat!
Funny thing about Jiggs… that was his nickname ’cause he never met a whisky jigger he could turn down. We all knew there were some games he was a little out there, but we weren’t sure why. But he knew and loved baseball, I learned so much playing for him. Many years later, as a long-hair senior in high school, I was at a local bar with a buddy of mine and there was Jiggs sitting at the bar by himself. My buddy knew Jiggs too because they were neighbors. We both went up to talk to him, and his immediate reaction was who the fuck are these long-hairs coming up to me. But he remembered me. We did a few shots together. He said we should start a new baseball league. He died a few years later….
Another Boston blood and heat guy is getting ready to be disappointed again.
They call me Mr.Jiggs!
The legendary SOB
Will now be forever ingrained in Flap history..
