Someone is going to give Gasman a 5 year deal? LOL. I would barely want him back on a 1 year deal. First half last season: 1.73 ERA. Second half (after teams began laying off his slider): 4.76. And there was no evidence he was adjusting to this.
He was a nice find but guys like that often flameout (see: The Dick).
Let someone else make the mistake of signing him.
Our company mgrs./admin got comped to a Blue Man show in Vegas, and they picked one of the younger guys to participate in the show. He told us afterward he had to sign liability waivers before they’d let him onstage. He was very fit but got tossed around something fierce and was still less than recovered as we walked back to hotel.
I’m sure it’s the length of contract that has been sticking point with Gausman, and Z is balking at 5 years. So be it, but still leaves a hole to be filled and that first half went long way towards Giants success.
Bottom line, Giants are going to need more at top of rotation than Webb and DeSclafani (major issues vs. LA regular season and playoffs not good sign) to win Division again, and acquiring that kind of talent is not gonna be cheap. Maybe they can pry one of A’s SPs loose for prospect capital.
supposedly they are in on Scherzer. lol that doesn’t sound right and it also sounds like a big mistake
short term, which does sound more like Z move, no? He was very good last season til Roberts burnt him out. Bridge to when guys at lower level can contribute.
Agree it’s the length of the contract on Gausman that Z won’t go for.But Gausman is still better then Disco and he did have to go thru a rough patch mentality with his wife’s difficult birth that had to have an impact.Hell he was an Allstar pitching selection wasn’t he? Had to skip that as well.Anyway he’s been pretty solid with 2 lethal pitches that were rated top ten among all pitchers in baseball, when his mechanics are are on so is he.But the years with Z who doesn’t like deals over 3 years will be the sticking point.Sure if a team goes 5 years at 110mil forget it, if he’s say like he has the last 2 years that he loves playing here, maybe he settles on 3/70mil and that works. We will know soon he’s eager to get a deal done now like many players with the uncertainty of the CBA lockout which looks like it will happen..
I wouldn’t sign any SP for a 5 year deal unless it was his first deal to take him out of arb years or his first real contract. For older arms, that’s too much dough for too much risk…
Scherzer might not want to come to the Giants after the 12 WS who knows but if he does a 1 or 2 yr deal just might put us over the top. Gasman had a great yr for us but I am not sold on a 2 pitch guy unless it’s in the BP. I still think top priority is a vet catcher who can be somewhat similar to Posey. I also still think we bring up a bunch or AA/AAA pitchers and see what might stick.
There’s always a good reason not to sign nearly every free agent. Gausman had the same stuff in 2020, one of the best splitters in the league (presumably developed late in his career) and a mid-90s fastball. He doesn’t walk many. It’s the Lincecum formula, which only started to be less effective once he lost velocity. Gausman pitched ok in 2020, then was really good and lucky for several starts in 21 and then went through a bad stretch. As long as he’s got enough fastball to keep the hitters honest, he should be an asset over the ups and downs of 200 innings. Five years does seem like at least one too many, though.
this doesn’t include hitters laying off his splitter and him not adjusting to that. If they aren’t swinging at it anymore it doesn’t matter how good it is
More of the 95+ fastball is the adjustment. Hitters making a collective decision to lay off anything that looks like a below the belt strike shouldn’t be a sustainable strategy against some one who throws as hard as Gausman. There isn’t anything less deceptive about his great splitter than someone else’s. Then again, there is the case of Smarge, who logically should have been much better than he was.
Carson Wentz (!) outdueling Brady at half, with 197 yds and 3 TDs. wow
Fournette outdoes them both.
Tennessee Coach Mike Vabrel has more career TD catches 6
then all his starting receivers today lol 😂
Back to this shit. Jimmy picked
Shanahan in Jimmy’s face and I like it such a terrible throw!
Which now turns into a TD pass to Thielen god dammit it!!
The Kings will attempt to win three in a row, today vs. the Grizzlies.
Could be a pretty good match-up.
Big contract.
“Bob Nightengale
@BNightengale
Marcus Semien’s 7-year, $175 million deal with #Rangers doesn’t include a no-trade or opt-out clause but no real need with that kind of guarantee at the age of 31.”
Well that should give us a rough idea of what KB will get.
Somewhat comparable players.
I think KB will get a little more than that in AAV…
I hadn’t heard that Jerry Johnson passed away recently.
Main man in the pen for the ’71 West champs…
Oh man that’s a bummer Jerry Johnson was really good carrying the Giants BP in 1971 with 18 saves helping them win the division along with stellar play from a rookie SS named Chris Speier. That team was fun to watch!RIP JerryJohnson..
they can have him.
Yep. DIdn’t see this before my below post…
No no no to Gasman.Even at 2 years, I’d be leery.. 1/2 a good season in 9 years off .500 is no bueno. Carlos Rondon? 4/$80? They are gonna have to spend on someone.
Mark my words:
Bum will be a Giant again…
I’m with you on that.
Your words are marked!
Kings ran into a Memphis buzz-saw. And so it goes.
Last week, some good Flapper mentioned the receiver Bourne for NE, forget exactly what about: local Bay Area guy, maybe? Made some good catch and run plays last week and again today.
Yeah P/A I was bummed on why the 49ers basically let Bourne Identity walk.He put up respectable numbers that easily put him as 3 rd receiving option. Now he has turned into a top receiver that the The took Mac Jones trust and now I’m considering picking him up in FF and dropping a well known name in WR Courtland Sutton who is struggling getting points compared to Bourne.. I’m happy for Bourne getting his big chance and making the most of it..
Bourne Again in New England
He made a very nice tiptoe down the sideline TD catch/run today.
Whoops posted yday’s thread:
We were all over the five year $100 mill price tag level for him and that is at least what he is getting. It is good for us and great for him!!!
Re Gausman of course. Can’t see the Scherzer rumor with us being anywhere close to reality. Not a Farhan move.
Both AFC and NFC showing some good races to the end. Ya’ll and your Niners, they’re suddenly in the 2nd wildcard slot.
