A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Team

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 29, 2021

I honestly can’t recall a single team winning the WS and us going “yep, they won it when they signed so and so back in November.”

Therefore……

Reports are that Castellanos is seeking a 7 year deal. Uh, Farhan would never do that. Nor should he.

Didn’t work for SD when they made their moves for pitching last year…

  2. Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 5:42 am

I made mention after Buster decided to retire that maybe Farhan uses this as an assessment year and figure out if Bart and Heliot and others and even Hjelle at some points this year are big leaguers or not and avoid any big multi-year deal for a free agent. I could see Suzuki being the exception and he will be part of building a long-term team.

  3. chipower9 said, on November 29, 2021 at 6:32 am

Gausman – five years at 110…no thanks. Thanks for playing…see ya.

Also, probably old news…Scherzer has supposedly narrowed it down to us, the bums, Angels and Mets. I saw 3 years 120. FORTY FUCKING MIL A YEAR…

Supposedly the Giants and Wood have been close for a week now. Must be some really fine print in that contract.

Only 78 days until pitchers and catchers report.

    • Winder said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:31 am

Yeah, 40 mil a year the Mets must really want him. I would like to see him take it and get out of our division. I don’t have a clue as to what Z has up his sleeve but I doubt it includes any long term deals. That should mean Bryant is off the table. Sill, I am looking forward to seeing what Z is gonna do.

  4. James said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:02 am

Zaidi has about 15 wins to play with. Signing Wood gets them to a roster that in theory would be good for 90 wins.

    • Bozo said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:37 am

I wonder if getting the Wood signing completed is vax related?

      • James said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:49 am

That’s not a bad guess. Maybe 3 years instead of two, given the Disco deal?

  5. willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:04 am

Only “moves” so far are reupping Belt and DeSclafani, fine enough.
Losses include Posey and Gausman, both significant players in 2021.
Problem with browsing Brebbia aisle is sometimes all you wind up with is…Brebbia.

  6. James said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:23 am

Zaidi has to anticipate some level of drop off from the holdovers. I suspect a significant reversal is even one of the not unlikely scenarios he’s playing with. Adding two expensive FAs and winding up 83-79 is going to make you look dumber than standing pat and coming up short. I’m not saying he won’t ultimately add some glitz, but I can see him preferring to take the heat for not doing so.

  7. Bozo said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:41 am

What do y’all think about Chris Taylor? He can play CF and the infield.

    • James said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:45 am

I’d be happy with that signing. I’d be happier if he had better career splits against lefties.

    • willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:52 am

Capable defender though not elite anywhere, including SS and adds RH .800 OPS bat with some power to lineup. Length of contract and how sustainable his decent play will age always an issue
Also imo one of least annoying Dodgers. Did end regular season in big slump, though did OK in playoffs.

    • Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:07 am

yes to a signing like this

    • Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:42 am

Does not put ball in play enough not a long term option so I like Suzuki better.

  8. Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:06 am

3 years 130 mil for Max. LOL

  9. djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:07 am

    Scherzer to Mets: 3/$130M
The world has gone fuckin crazy…

    • snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:17 am

      That’s amusing.
With these recent signings and mega $ deals, I guess the Mets are done with Madoff malaise. When they crater, they can’t blame it on not spending…

  10. unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:15 am

$43 mill/year? Wow. Mets are Mets-ing hard this offseason.

  11. Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:23 am

Wouldn’t Mets payroll be in the $270 mill range. Fairly ridiculous and I am betting they go nowhere next year!!!

  12. Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:24 am

So glad Farhan does not shit the bed on the Scherzer and Gausman type of deals. Now seeing Castellanos wants 7-8 year deal after Semien got that. Fuck him. Let the Rangers spend all their money as well or the Padres.

    • djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:33 am

I imagine you can lump KB in that 7-8 year deal bunch…

      • Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:44 am

Yep. Mariners have the cash. Why he would want to play there is the question. Maybe also a Rangers target instead of Castellanos and if Seager lands with Yanks instead.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:04 am

Yep. 7/$200? I had 6/200 a little while ago, and it sure looks like these guys want to burn money like sailors on leave.

  13. Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:35 am

this spending spree by the Mets is going to be having us laughing our asses off at them by like Aug 1

    • djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:39 am

Baez could be next, and their bullpen needs fixin…

    • Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:43 am

      Totally agree

  14. Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:44 am

Also love that Scherzer goes to a Nats rival…

  15. Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:45 am

this approach blew up in San Diego’s face last year. And they have a fanbase that couldn’t give a shit. Wait till New Yorkers get a chance to react to a similar situation

  16. Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:47 am

Do Yankmes sign Stroman to zing the Mets???

  17. djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:51 am

His heirs ain’t into that stuff.
Thet would do it strictly for business/baseball reasons…

    • Macdog said, on November 29, 2021 at 10:28 am

I’m getting myself in a Puig-like frenzy over the idea of bringing back MadBum…

    • unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:02 am

Love that. Esp how Puig waits for the ump to get in front of him before he moves toward Bummie.

    • Winder said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:05 am

      I really hope we do.

  19. Winder said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:10 am

The Scherzer move makes me happy. He’s probably more comfortable in the East div, anyway plus he’s got more money than he can spend. The Dodgers are gonna have to pull a couple of rabbits out of their hats. But, they usually have some pitchers in AAA that have true potential. This was a good move for the Giants org.

  20. willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:30 am

I really hope Giants leave Bum alone. He’ll always get well deserved warm welcome in SF, though once DH is permanent and he doesn’t get to hit anymore, lot of appeal lost . What I saw on mound in late season return to SF was not very encouraging.

    • Winder said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:52 am

Yeah, he has definitely lost some stuff. But in our system all you gotta work is 5/6 innings and I think he could have a couple of years doing that. AZ would probably have to eat some of his salary. Maybe I just got a soft spot for him but I think he might like the idea also.

      • willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 11:55 am

I still like him a lot, just doesn’t seem like career heading anywhere but downward. Last days of hometown heroes Lincecum and Cain didn’t go well either and it was sad to watch them get lit up and be ineffective.

      • Winder said, on November 29, 2021 at 12:34 pm

        Tru dat, it wasn’t pretty.

      • unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 1:29 pm

Cain was a little more worrying at the time because he’s built like a horse and you’d think he would be able to keep it up for a while longer than he did. Timmy was such an anomaly given his size that his fall off the table wasn’t so startling.

As they say, what a long strange trip it has been. This era is right when I really started digging these guys. I wasn’t too fond of Donna Godchaux and her Yoko-esque screeching in the 70s. Brent Mydland was much more solid and a far better singer/contributor. And Jerry REALLY dug playing off of him.

      • djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:23 pm

Cain (like Jason Schmidt) actually slimmed down noticeably in his later years.
Bum is still truly a horse – probably a good 30 pounds heavier than his rookie year.
With his perfect mechanics and light inning load the past few years, he could still be a very solid 3 by today’s standards. I think a Longoria type deal with AZ absorbing some $ is feasible.
        Would be awesome!

  21. alleykat69 said, on November 29, 2021 at 12:58 pm

Listen Bitches says Farhan too the Flap. I’m doing all I can right now to have your heads scratching huh?Who,Wtf?
I just signed Relief Pitcher Pete Tago a former number 1 pick by the Rockies in 2010 and has never made it past AAA!! As Twin would use to say:All teams need camp fillers and depth..

  22. willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 1:58 pm

Seager to Rangers. Now that helps lessen talent gap with LA, just like as Winder said Dodgers losing out on Scherzer sweepstakes.

    • snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 2:31 pm

Dodgers have to know something about Scherzer.
They’re probably laughing at the Mets…

      • unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 2:42 pm

They know he’s 37 . . . Is he Nolan Ryan, or Kevin Brown? I guess we’ll find out. $43 mill is stupid money tho. As we all know, winning the preseason gets you a shit-ton of bills to pay down the road.

      • Bozo said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:13 pm

What LA doesn’t know about Trevor Bauer’s status may have added to the equation. Bauer was on administrative leave last year so LA had to pay his salary. They are off the hook if he gets suspended, for however long that is, but I don’t think MLB has made that call yet.

    • snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 2:46 pm

Buster Olney says the entire payroll of the Orioles in 2022 will be less than Scherzer’s salary.
MLB is in danger of becoming a competitive joke, it’s getting there already.
How can you be a paying Orioles fan when you see that comparison?…

  23. willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 2:47 pm

    Ray to M’s too.
Scherzer dominated down the stretch–LA won every single game he started, all 11 of them.
ERA was 1.98, he K’d 11 guys a game and BB’d 1. WHIP was under 1.00. Maybe they didn’t want to pay him that kind for $$ for x amount of years but he had one hella season, Doesn’t seem like he’s done, yet.

    • snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:17 pm

At his age, his talent/arm could go at any time. He was having self described “dead arm” late last season, and even in the Giants playoff. If the Mets want to gamble with that kind of bread, good on ’em. A Tommy John injury in the middle of next season would basically render that contract a disaster…

      • willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:25 pm

HS kids get TJS these days, as do countless younger ML pitchers including Beede in 2020 and he’s 10 years younger; injuries can happen to anyone at any time and they are unpredictable, as Mets well know given what happened with deGrom. Let’s hope Giants SPs don’t suffer any, regardless of age or wear and tear.

      • snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:49 pm

Willie, are you saying the Mets signing of Scherzer is a good deal for them, or that the Giants should have signed him? If not, what’s your point?

      • willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 5:04 pm

I’m saying he’s a quality SP, finished regular season well and proven gamer, and I don’t have any more injury concerns about him than anyone else. Players always follow the $$, right? If that’s what it took for Mets to get him given the market and competing offers no one here knows about, I applaud them for trying to improve their team. impossible to tell at this point if it was good deal or if it will blow up on Cohen; I’d have loved to see him anchor Giants rotation…at least for 2022.

  24. willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:18 pm

Scherzer in Game 3 allowed 1 run on Longoria HR in 7 innings, 3 hits 1 BB 10 Ks. And took the L as Wood and Co. shut Dogs out for 1-0 W.
Then administered end to Giants season by retiring side in order bottom 9 in his lone inning of work after Dogs scored NLDS clincher off Doval.

  25. djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:31 pm

    Will Clark or Jeff Kent?

  26. willedav said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:39 pm

UW football to hire Fresno St. coach DeBoer. Maybe Wilcox can stick around Cal and savor the Axe for awhile.

  27. alleykat69 said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:50 pm

    Kent?

  28. Winder said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:51 pm

    Clark.

  29. snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 3:57 pm

There’s plenty of HC jobs open out there right now, Wilcox is probably on somebody else’s list. He was rumored to be in the running for UW, so that’s probably not the only one. He’s signed through ’23, but I doubt he’ll finish it out, he’s young and too good to hang around Cal for full 6 years. This Covid mess the last couple of weeks of the season reportedly pissed him off totally with the Cal administration and the City. His buyouts due to Cal decline year by year, if he leaves now until beginning of ’22 season it is only $1.75 million and $1.5 million before the ’23 season — that’s nothing but a cost of doing business to a bigger program if they want him. He’s pulling down about $3.5 million the next two years. Fresno State might consider him, but they tend to like offensive, not defensive HCs, plus they likely can’t go up to his current salary level. Shaw at Stanfoo is reportedly getting almost $9 million, which is horrendous overpayment, that’s Saban territory. Cal has trouble attracting a good QB, and that’s a problem. For the last 18 years its been Rodgers, Goff and the rest a bunch of journeymen…

  30. unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:00 pm

Clark Kent. Hah! I’d say Clark since he was here longer.

Wow. Just checked, DJ. Not giving it away, but that is nutty!!

  31. alleykat69 said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:20 pm

Wow so the Mets and Rangers have just thrown out a half billion overall full time contracts?

Crazy shit when I thought this CBA would be lower contracts overall, that doesn’t seem to be what’s happening with these insane new deals as owners are panicking to get the players they want in place before Dec.1 lockout..

I’m fine where Z/H stands on this, if a great player would settle on a 3 year deal at 90-100 cap, be in on it, otherwise forget it! Still I hope they get involved with Suzuki Motorcycle 🏍 a nice young piece to build a team around in the future, he’s a 5 year guy Z might be persuaded to sign for..

And btw , the Mets are going to regret signing Scherzer&Marte due to their ages 37&33 they will break down. But had it to Cohen he’s not afraid to blow dough to satisfy his fans, Just doesn’t use it on the right players imo..

    • unca_chuck said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:37 pm

The fans will be satisfied until the season starts and they go nowhere.

  32. snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:33 pm

    Yeah, Seager to Texas.
    10 years, $325 million.
There must be an oil field under the Texas parking lot…

  33. Giant Head said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:37 pm

I am looking at the Scherzer and Seager decisions as glass half full that both of them decided the Flodgers better days have passed them by and they are moving on to better opportunities. Let’s have finished, Jansen not the same closer. Lots more money having to go out to Bellinger, Bauer albatross sitting on their shoulders and maybe both realize Dave Roberts over rated as a manager.

  34. Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:56 pm

this is too much for this guy if he does what he’s done most of his career. But who knows, maybe he gets a bounce like the other guys last year did

  35. Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 4:58 pm

i’m assuming Kent had way more. Will only had like one big HR year, not looking as this per the request, but I think he had 35 one year with us and nothing close after that.

  36. Bozo said, on November 29, 2021 at 5:02 pm

  37. Flavor said, on November 29, 2021 at 5:46 pm

325 mil for Seager. LOL, this is why Texas is never going to win anything. Didn’t they learn their lesson with the absurd A-Rod deal? This one is worse, Seager is no A-Rod

  38. djloo27 said, on November 29, 2021 at 6:17 pm

Saw a blogger comment somewhere recently he doesn’t pass the ball to Quickley, but I haven’t seen Knicks game in weeks so not aware of what’s up over there.

      Thanks! 🙂
Paul strumming his bass like a regular guitar as he’s coming up with the song is real cool.

    • snarkk said, on November 29, 2021 at 9:02 pm

The Disney+ special was FULL of stuff like this.

It took Paul a while to come up with “Tucson, Arizona” as the place JoJo left, but he did.

Somebody usually had a kernel of a song, often Paul, then he/they’d play it out over and over, adding, subtracting, changing words, dropping chords in/out, working on melody, bridges, etc. By day’s end they had most of what we now recognize as the framework or even most of an iconic song. George came in one morning with a song he said he’d written the night before at home. It was “Something”, and he actually had a lot of it framed out, with a lot of lyrics. But, he as much said he needed some help with some places he was blocked. By day’s end, they all had worked on it, and it was essentially done, music and lyrics, improved, with some minor changes to make later for recording.

One thing I got out of this documentary is that regardless that these guys were already rich and more famous than just about anybody in the Western world at that time, and they were about to end their relationship, they really were into the music. They were great musicians — they had heads full of an incredible amount of other music that they repeatedly would just pull up and immediately play, from the ’40s to the late ’60s — like from a Spotify hard drive in their brains. I think that helped them greatly in writing their stuff when they were temporarily blocked in writing more of a song. And, in the midst of all their BS, they really really did love making the music. That was very obvious.

BTW, George died 20 years ago, today ….

  43. zumiee said, on November 29, 2021 at 7:44 pm

Speaking of the Beatles, George Harrison passed away 20 years ago today, at age 58, from cancer. Possibly caused by all of his years as a heavy smoker. George himself said that before he passed away.

There’s video of CSN performing Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, back around 2012 (they already were starting to look pretty old at that point). At one point, Stills go off to the side and plays some quiet solo riffs (unless I’m mistaken) from “Within You Without You”, and Nash says something nearly inaudible about George. I had thought maybe they were performing that song right about when George died, but the video tag says 2012, so… not sure why Stills did that at that time, but I thought it was pretty cool.

    • zumiee said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:17 pm

      Very cool.
Definitely it’s “Within You Without You.”
It sounds to me like Nash says “God bless George.”

Unfortunately there’s a big rift now between Crosby and Nash, and Crosby and Young.
Crosby admits he often speaks without a filter, and it’s been something that has hurt many of his friendships over the years.
There’s a lot to like about Crosby. His twitter account is one of the few celebrity twitter accounts I check out on a regular basis. He interacts with fans, answers a lot of their questions, and has a lot of interesting opinions on music, culture, and politics.
But sometimes he’ll post something that just makes me cringe. Yikes, there’s something to be said for having a filter at times..

  48. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 29, 2021 at 8:52 pm

The Crosby-Young rift isn’t that surprising; even way back when, David didn’t have great things to say about Young and his role in making Deja Vu (Young was Stills’ friend and came into the band at his urging ’cause he wanted someone to jam with). I think Crosby said something *not nice* about Young’s girlfriend or something like that. But the Crosby-Nash rift surprises me, not sure how that happened. Stills is friends with all of them, still…. I’ve always been a Stills fan, he’s near genius. But man, there’s still something about Crosby’s voice; even at 80, crystal clear.

My theory (I have no proof) about why Crosby said negative things about Daryl Hannah, Neil’s then girlfriend, and now wife, is because Hannah harmed Jackson Browne’s reputation by claiming Browne physically abused her while they were a couple. Browne has totally denied that there was any abuse.

Yeah, it’s amazing how great Crosby’s voice still is. This is a recording from this year. It’s amazing how clear his voice is.
(This song was written with Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, and the song has a strong Steely Dan feel to it.)

Wow, sounds like it could’ve come right off of Gaucho….

About to start the Beatles doc. Don’t have Disney+ so I’m watching it through a neighbor’s window and playing the songs I think they’re working on in my earbuds.”

Loo, I recently read that Rita Moreno, at age 90, is going to be in Spielberg’s remake of Westside Story. Obviously not as the same character, and she won’t be able to replicate that hotness she displayed the first time around, but I thought that was pretty cool.

There’s a recent Rhino Records podcast on Crosby’s “If Only I Could Remember My Name…”, apparently making the case that it’s a great lost and misunderstood classic. I gave it a listen, after a friend hyped it. Going back to give older artists you long ago dismissed a chance is a way of staying adventurous as your interest in the endless stream of new stuff keeps fading. My review: Stoned hippies singing dorky lyrics should sound like this: https://youtu.be/poj0o9hSsqI
