A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Tick, Tick, Tick…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 1, 2021

Lockout looming. Midnight tonight. Tons of free agents still on the board and the Giants payroll commitment currently around 100 million which is nothing for them. They won 107 games last year so you wouldn’t think there would be too many holes to fill but with Buster and Gasman leaving, coupled with the fact that 107 was a complete outlier, it is conceivable that Z will be quite active once the labor agreement comes together—whenever that will be.

Still, advantage us when it does re-start. I trust Z to finish off the roster with literally his picks of the remaining litter….

Keeping the band together part deux. Contracts for Jarlin Garcia, Slater, Yaz, Ruf, Casali and Dominic Leone are done. If they get Wood completed today, they will go into the lockdown with one more spot to fill on the roster.

With money coming out of every pocket, I just for once like to see a big name splash player head are way then bringing the old band back shopping both the thrift store& canned food store aisles.I know it’s : “In Z we trust” but seriously Alex Corn on the Cobb? That’s the best we can do?

  3. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2021 at 8:28 am

They aren’t gonna sign any big FA until the farm guys come up. In 2 years this team will be completely different. When they feel they need one piece, they will go after it. Spending just to spend isn’t advisable.

Posey is big loss to me. Only 3 other Giants hitters had better slugging pct. than his .499, Ruf Belt and Crawford, and no one had higher OB than he did at .390. That’s a big RH bat missing in the middle of order for 400 ABs.
Given some regression expected from those still on roster, unless you somehow replace that, it means fewer runs scored/HRs hit and that is large part of how Giants won so many games 2021.

  5. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:09 am

More than anything we are dependent on Belt’s health. Bart will provide some hitting, and Posey’s numbers were solid, but something like 15/70 shouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Bart. mainly because Posey’s every 4th day backup was pretty much a black hole and Posey was 18/56.

Not ginormous numbers. What they WILL miss is his defense and pitcher whispering

    • Winder said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:15 am

I think we have to go get another vet catcher not so much because of the hitting but more so of stabilizing the pitching staff. Casali did a pretty good job of that in his games last year but I’m not so sure about Bart just yet. It is just an important piece that should be dealt with.

      • chipower9 said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:21 am

        Agree.

    • alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:20 am

I’d start with Bart’s 1st career HR first before predicting 15/70 out of him..

      • willedav said, on December 1, 2021 at 10:37 am

lulz. Especially considering he hit 10 in 250 ABs at Sac in Coast League.

  6. Flavor said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:14 am

Agree with WD, losing Posey needs to get addressed and not with dumbass Bart or Casilla. That’s one of the reasons I wanted them to sign Yan Gomes–for the power and the connection to Atlee’s daughter.

    • unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:17 am

If Bart can’t cover Posey’s 2/3 of a season numbers, then he’s a bust. Mainly because he doesn’t seem like he has a clue defensively. I’m sure we will get more hitting, but it’ll be OF guys, not a catcher.

One bat, one arm, one current roster member be gone.

If only Correa played second, he’s the right age and projects to add the value to justify a crazy contract. Farhan did go after Harper . . . .

    • Bozo said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:52 am

“One bat, one arm, one current roster member be gone.” – Agreed. Finding a way to fit Correa in would be great, but I have a feeling he will be headed to LA.

  8. James said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:25 am

At the plate, Bart just needs to keep the OPS gap between him and Posey’s numbers last year at around 100. When a good player leaves, there’s always the tendency to think a lesser replacement brings nothing.

    • Flavor said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:51 am

keeping the gap “around 100” is just an arbitrary number, right? Posey brought so much more than his OPS. We need a decent catching platoon, a new OF and another SP

      • James said, on December 1, 2021 at 10:15 am

And I probably overestimated what Bart is capable of. Whatever else Posey brought, the gap in runs scored is the concern others raised. If Bart surprises, and posts an OPS in the high 700s, that gap may not be as big as everyone imagines.

  9. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:29 am

So how much longer do they wait on Ramos Fizz to take over LF? Dudes got over 1,600 AB’s in the minors?
They need a RH bat with pop, why not him, why not now? There’s been a lot of big league players called up with less AB’s then that that are producing right now..

    • chipower9 said, on December 1, 2021 at 9:59 am

I am sure he will get his shot in ST…whenever that happens.

  10. willedav said, on December 1, 2021 at 10:09 am

I can see adding more hitting in the OF as Unc said. what I can’t see is finding bargain guy that will hit near as well as Posey did, and Z doesn’t seem interested in paying for established hitters that want $$/years.
    but, let me ask this:
    would Giants take Duvall back?

  11. chipower9 said, on December 1, 2021 at 11:22 am

Giants have inked Wood. 2/25 (12.5 per) with incentives that could add another 2.5 mil.

4/5 of the starter spots are set. I suspect they fill the other internally.

    Time to go get Suzuki….

  12. unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2021 at 11:45 am

Would he cost us a pick? Not sure.

This is crazy. Never seen this. There’s a bunch of Giants in here. Craig Lefferts, Tim Flannery, Norm Sherry, Boch, Champ Summers, Dave Dravecky. . .

    • willedav said, on December 1, 2021 at 4:49 pm

Pascual Perez, yeah this was classic beanball war.

      • unca_chuck said, on December 1, 2021 at 8:23 pm

Yeah, Perez was a major league tool.

Here is an excerpt from a recent article on Suzuki, regarding the fee to sign him:

“Since Suzuki is 27, his contract is not subject to international bonus pool money restrictions. He is free to negotiate the best deal he can, with the Carp receiving a release fee from the signing team based on the total value of Suzuki’s contract, a sliding scale that begins with 20 percent of the first $25 million guaranteed and increases thereafter.”

      Good read. Thanks.

Sounds like the players see tonight’s deadline as not being a “hard” deadline, so I am not holding my breath for any breakthroughs, today.

      • Winder said, on December 1, 2021 at 1:50 pm

Yeah, the way is sounds is they will probably be at it for a couple of months and then figure it out. I doubt any actual work stoppage will happen though.

I want to see one of the farm system OFers break through at ST and make this team for 2022. Ramos IMO is in the S or get off the pot position. This guy has been hyped by the organization for a long time, he’s had time to develop. Yes, 2020 was a lost year in many respects, but not totally. I’m with Kat’s POV, this guy has had plenty of ABs — over 1600 in the minors over 4 seasons, with 450 of them split AA / AAA last year. He’ll be 23 in September. He’s got a glove that looks MLB ready. Lots of teams have studs playing full time or a lot when they’re younger than this guy. He has pop, and that’s what today’s offense is all about, Ks be damned. Let’s see if this kid is the real deal or just another hype by the Giants that goes Pfffffft when faced with major league reality…

    • Winder said, on December 1, 2021 at 1:51 pm

I think that is Z’s plan.

    • chipower9 said, on December 1, 2021 at 2:18 pm

I assume that he will get a really good look in ST. And I trust our coaches to make the determination whether or not be belongs on the big league roster.

    • James said, on December 1, 2021 at 3:24 pm

I just looked at Ramo’s minor league stats for the first time. Wow, he’s not been particularly good. The common wisdom is that very few players overcome minor league mediocrity in the majors.

      • djloo27 said, on December 1, 2021 at 4:14 pm

        Maybe he’s bored?

    • snarkk said, on December 1, 2021 at 2:54 pm

I look forward to the Giants putting some beat downs on him…

  17. alleykat69 said, on December 1, 2021 at 4:10 pm

Jeez why can’t Melonface just get out of the NL western division to the Junior Circuit instead?
18 more times a year looking at that ugly mug is repulsive 🤮

    • James said, on December 1, 2021 at 6:49 pm

He’s probably going to lead the league in saves the next 3 years.

  18. willedav said, on December 1, 2021 at 4:48 pm

idk Z might feel Bart and Ramos need couple more months of AAA ball.
Ramos at Sac: 229 ABs 4 HRs .400 slugging .722 OPS. In such pronounced hitters league, meh.
By contrast, Dubon and Vosler both had .900 OPS at Sac in about same # of ABs, with .500 slugging. Vosler put up similar numbers 2019 for El Paso with Padres AAA.

    • willedav said, on December 1, 2021 at 4:54 pm

see James 3:24. AA ball at Richmond is a pitchers league, AAA at Sac is opposite. Besides Sac there are warm weather yards in Vegas and El Paso, plus elevation yards (ala Coors) at Reno and Salt Lake. And he hit 4 HRs, after hitting 10 for Richmond. total of 14 in 449 ABs last year.
Guys like Dubon Vosler (neither of whom could hit ML pitching) spent most of year in Sac but put up way better numbers than Ramos did, with more power.

My least favorite TV commercial right now is the one with the boring couple with the husband who tripped over a basketball and is having a tele-conference with his doctor.
It has all the elements of a lousy commercial, with unlikable characters that are supposed to be funny but aren’t.
