A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Quiet on the lockout front. Almost too quiet. Manfred did take some time out of doing nothing to have Ken Rosenthal fired for saying mean things about him. Big Flavor’s currently line on whether they start the season on time? I’ll say +150. Odds they start on time, -150. Thoughts?

You know until seeing that picture I never realized the location of Seals Stadium. Back of my mind I am a always thinking of Kezar.

I would say 10-1 odds starting the season on time. We found this interesting about Bonds deserved hall of fame status based on his first 13 years playing pre-steroid allegations. The data is overwhelming and highlights the hypocrisy of the baseball writers:

Looks like Aussies holding up Djokovic visa and won’t allow him to enter country after all, after massive backlash where lockdowns and travel restrictions have been very severe.

Epic Sunday coming up for locals–Niners regardless of who is QB, have to beat Rams on road to make playoffs and all signs pointing to Klay Thompson rejoining Golden State that day in 5:30 game hosting Pistons.

Fox will probably show the Saints. Dirty Birds game here, not a bad game to watch but I’d rather see the 9ers.

I don’t know about the odds but I think the season will start on time. It’s all about the money.

One of my daughter’s previous boyfriends is the VP of Player Development for the Brewers. We talked over the holidays, and while he did not provide a lot of info on why he thinks so, he said he is fairly confident that this is resolved before the season starts (no impact on the season). I hope like hell he is right.

    Meanwhile…back to the window…

43 days until pitchers and catchers report…hopefully…

I predict a shortened Spring Training, but an on-time or max two week late season start. Too much money at risk for longer delay. Unless Omicron is still raging by then and in-person crowds are limited in major markets — then it may take longer. Either way, expect higher injury counts this season after it gets started, due to F’d up Spring Training…

  9. willedav said, on January 5, 2022 at 10:41 am

Hope season can start on time and negotiations can get sorted out. As for injuries, I would think if ST is normal there would be hope for fewer of them, given players and teams have season worth of history behind them. Most guys work out year round now anyway and stay in relative baseball shape and I’d assume pitchers are doing same on their own.

Son of friend of mine lives in Seattle and works for Microsoft. Weather there today is rain and snow flurries, with temps mid to high 30s.
He’s currently staying with his Mom for couple more days in South Bay, where it’s sunny and will be low-mid 60s. Winter in Bay Area.

Back in the old days in the 1980s, when the Niners had their summer camps at Rocklin at a junior college, fans could get really close to the player workouts, behind a chainlink fence. I remember Lott’s intensity in those workouts in the 100 (!) degree heat. He clearly was one of the leaders of the team, not vocally so much, just sheer intensity. A larger than life presence on the field. Joe DiMaggio was that way with the Yankees. Not very vocal, but he would give a withering look to anybody who wasn’t getting the job done. Nobody wanted to get that look from DiMaggio.

  19. willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 6:54 am

Snarkk may have a point in 6:25. Biggest issue for Niners this Sunday might be who is available to play corner (or safety) instead of QB.

    • Flavor said, on January 6, 2022 at 7:46 am

i mean that’s fairly obvious, their entire starting coverage unit, as of right now, is out

      • willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 8:21 am

there is a chance some of them can clear protocol before game time. G did throw yesterday and Eric Branch said “with what appeared to be his typical velocity” but nothing longer than 15 yards and “slightly shortened delivery.” Norman being only corner available for practice yesterday sucks.

  20. willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 8:57 am

Let’s not forget Shanahan orchestrated 31-10 thrash of Rams last time out, with G having fine game (140 passer rating) and SF owning almost 40 minutes of possession time. 44 runs for 150+, 2 TD passes from G, pick 6 by Ward off Stafford yada yada. Got ahead early and Rams only scored once til very end of game and were toast.

Shanahan imo is fully capable of outcoaching them (he beat them with Mullens at QB) and if Lance starts I’m sure he will have a solid game plan going in. Whether D holds up, pass rush and stopping run is more issue.

Niners were 3-5 when this game happened on Monday night, coming off awful Colt McCoy L to Cards..

Hey Wille, any idea why San Francisco is playing Loyola Chicago early afternoon today in Salt Lake City?

      • willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 9:47 am

Nah man. They haven’t played in awhile iirc and might want to just get a game in before league starts. I think St. Mary’s hasn’t played either. Not televised locally either so I got nothing.

      • willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 10:01 am

Chron said yesterday all 7 WCC mens conference games got postponed last weekend and St. Mary’s-Santa Clara game scheduled for tonight postponed as well due to problems with SMC.

      • Macdog said, on January 6, 2022 at 10:11 am

It really is crazy. Dons off to a good start at 13-1, including a win over Arizona St., though Loyola’s a slight favorite today.

  22. willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 10:10 am

Ah here we go: Tuesday in Chron is story that USF at Zags game scheduled for Thursday in Spokane postponed due to Zags problems with Covid.
“To make up for it, reported cbs sports, the Dons (13-1) and Loyola-Chicago (9-2) scheduled a game at Salt Lake Community College in SLC Thursday.”
“Loyola lost its MVC opener set for Thursday vs. Illinois St. due to Redbirds being on Covid pause… Ramblers haven’t played since Dec.10.”

    • Macdog said, on January 6, 2022 at 10:12 am

I guess they decided on SLC as a neutral site, haha.

      • willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 1:35 pm

Mac, Arizona St. is terrible. Cal blew them out over weekend at Haas. Their guards can’t shoot. Hurley brought in bunch of new guys as transfers to replace 3 leading scorers. Remy Martin left for Kansas, Alonzo Verge to Nebraska, and Josh Christopher got drafted by Rockets.

      • willedav said, on January 6, 2022 at 1:38 pm

        Just saw final–Ramblers won 79-74.

  23. unca_chuck said, on January 6, 2022 at 10:14 am

The Niners are very good at neutralizing Aaron Donald. It’s all about the run game. Control the line and play action works. Not really sure what Von Miller is doing since he’s been with the Rams, but I haven’t heard a lot of excitement around his impact.

The first game, Kittle absolutely destroyed Miller on a run to the left side.

I’m all for Lance being in there. Jimmy may be able to throw short shit, but I’d rather have our WRs running mid-range to deep routes to get the running lanes opened up.

    • chipower9 said, on January 6, 2022 at 11:23 am

I saw some talk on Miller in an Athletic or NBC Sports piece, and while he had a slow start with the Lambs, he has been his usual havoc-wreaking self last couple of games.

        Welcome to the NFL Trey.

  24. alleykat69 said, on January 6, 2022 at 12:27 pm

49ers OL power run to the left side is by far the best in the NFL
when you can run behind LT Williams ( the best at his position by far) TE Kittle next to him, FB Juice also leading the way as they handoff to RB Mitchell, all savage blockers with a hard nosed RB not easy to bring down! It’s awesome the size holes they can open up against the defense..imo

    • unca_chuck said, on January 6, 2022 at 12:51 pm

The beauty of that is Donald usually lines up on the other side. Having Mitchell back is huge.

David Cone joining ESPN Sunday night baseball broadcast team. And then there’s this:

For eight games on ESPN2, Alex Rodriguez will join veteran commentator Michael Kay for Sunday Night Baseball with Kay-Rod — a broadcast similar to the ManningCasts that featured former quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning during Monday Night Football this season. The show will feature special guests as well as fantasy baseball and predictive elements.

Rodriguez and Kay will also serve as the primary broadcast team for two games during the 2022 season.

    • willedav said, on January 7, 2022 at 9:50 am

Hey Mac, saw that 3 different games in MAAC all postponed today, including Monmouth. Is this because of bad weather and snow in Jersey/NYC, or Covid related?

Kay-Rod, yuck. Only watched little of Manning fests and one I did had very little to do with actual game going on, which seemed to be afterthought.

  30. Macdog said, on January 7, 2022 at 10:07 am

Not sure about the other games, but COVID is definitely the reason for Monmouth’s postponement. They haven’t played since Dec, 22, they’re scheduled to return next Friday at St. Peter’s for first of four games in seven days, including big home game vs. Iona Pitinos.

I agree about the Manningcast, tried watching the other night but yeah, when they have a guest on they’re not paying any attention to the game. Plus I don’t like the reduced screen.

  31. unca_chuck said, on January 7, 2022 at 11:12 am

Years ago, when Howard Stern was rising through the ranks I had the idea of broadcasting Niner games with me and my friend as an R-rated (well maybe X rated with all the fucks) play by play from the average fan point of view. Still think it could work on Sirius or some shit. Haven’t seen/listened to the Manning deal, but I can’t imagine that being very good.

  32. djloo27 said, on January 7, 2022 at 11:46 am

      Gotta look this one up.

      • willedav said, on January 7, 2022 at 12:23 pm

It was in Hank Greenwalk bio, I think when Warriors were playing St. Louis Hawks in playoffs and King screamed at a ref who had burned them with bad call “You M…” and it inadvertently got out over the airwaves.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 7, 2022 at 12:19 pm

King is still the only announcer to get T-ed up in a b-ball game. I think it was for that very call. Called the ref a matriphile.

I’ve often thought that a periodic Flap podcast about the Giants would be cool…

    • willedav said, on January 7, 2022 at 3:24 pm

that would be great. Couple guys in charge, maybe one from each coast, and taking questions from everyone else. Wish there was more baseball to talk about.

    • snarkk said, on January 7, 2022 at 3:30 pm

I think it would be fun. No holds barred on the language, everybody drops in their two cents, with some good natured arguments and agreements thrown in. Maybe once every two weeks. Will Clark is a partner/owner of some sort of a website that sets up and hosts podcasts for interested members. I think it’s pretty cheap to become a “member”, might be one way of doing it. How fun would it be to have a Flapodcast, and have Will the Thrill be a guest for one podcast. The fact we’re all older fans and could shoot the S with him on his days as a player would be a blast…
