A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

NFL Time Baby

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 14, 2022

There is a LOT of football going on this weekend. These are my picks that I will weave through different 3 game parlays….

Niners money line. They can win this game on the OL and the DL. Dallas has stars but this is not a team that scares me at all.

Cinn -5.5. Bengals are a little like the Cowboys. They have lots of stars especially offensively. But they get to play a Raider team that just isn’t very good, in my opinion. Blowout looming.

Buffalo money line. If Belly can shut down Allen more power to him. I also don’t see a rookie QB, as decent as Jones has been, rolling through a road playoff game. Still, a game like this often ends on a FG. I wouldn’t give the points here I’d just take the Bills on the ML.

Philly +8.5. I don’t like Philly that much I just really don’t think it’s TB’s year and that’s a lot of points to give. Being on the road in Tampa isn’t that much of a detriment either. Philly will have to find someone to make plays, though. Maybe Bucs struggle a bit and Philly manages to cover.

KC -11.5. Lot of points but Big Ben is washed. I think KC rolls here and this is a place where home field advantage is huge.

AZ money line. I still can’t believe the Rams folded so badly last week. That reason alone is good enough to take AZ on the ML and we know for a FACT that there is no noticeable home field advantage for LA here. Soft fans, soft team. AZ running game + the electric Murray should be enough.

Those are my leans, who you guys like?

I am with you on Bills essentially ML and Cincy. I teased it down to the +1 for Bills and -1 for Cincy. Hit the first bet and have some money to play with for Sunday. But Eagles (and I watched a lot of their last game against the Team Formerly Known as the Redskins because of a side bet with a Wash fan) and the Eagles are flat out awful. So my hunch is tease the Bucs down to -2.5 and pair them with the Niners at +10 and maybe a second bet teasing the two with the Chiefs down to -6.5. Rams Cards game I think can go either way.

    • Flavor said, on January 14, 2022 at 6:50 am

i’ve never teased a game in my life. FUcks the odds up too much. Why not just have strong takes based on the pt spreads offered?

  2. Giant Head said, on January 14, 2022 at 6:54 am

Not so concerned with the Dubs without Dray being out last four games but they have not looked at all without Dray. Curry and Poole has been way off. I think they need to seriously consider getting a big man like Sabonis or Myles Turner and Ibaka is the the cheaper alternative. Would take Wiggins and maybe Looney to make the money work (I could see the Pacers nod-nod wink-wink releasing Looney after a trade and then we can pick him back up) to get either Sabinia or Turner. Ibaka for a couple 2nd rounders is a slam dunk.

    • Giant Head said, on January 14, 2022 at 6:56 am

Playoffs will be way more physical and Ayton and the Suns and Lakers and Nuggets could all out muscle us and that is not even thinking about potential Finals against a Giannis Bucks or an Embiid Sixers.

  3. birddogpdx said, on January 14, 2022 at 7:41 am

Flavor those picks are cute but belong on the DQB. Good Luck!

  4. unca_chuck said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:23 am

AZ has lost 9 of the last 10 to LA, and is 1-5 under Kliff Klavin. Like Shanny vs Carroll, or Shanny vs McVay, there’s something going on there more than simply records. I think the Rams bounce back.

AZ comes in losing 4 of their last 5 as well. They are a mess. Murray is not hitting guys like earlier.

    • Winder said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:57 am

Just like last year AZ starts really strong and then falls flat at the end. I think defenses have figured out Murray or else he’s just tired/hurt. I would take the Rams also. Seems like every team in the playoffs have had some great games and some total shit games. I think I would play the weather when possible. But I am a terrible gambler.

      • Winder said, on January 14, 2022 at 9:11 am

I think it might be a little risky to lay bets to early. The virus is moving fast just about everywhere.

    • Flavor said, on January 14, 2022 at 9:10 am

well, they did just beat Dallas. If they can get the running game going I bet they win.

      • Winder said, on January 14, 2022 at 9:44 am

Yeah, it’s a tough one to call. AZ’s running backs have been hurt for weeks but they still keep coming back and they are missing Hopkins. I think Murray is the key get to him and they are done.

  5. willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:32 am

Can’t stand em but Raiders have sure made things interesting, under replacement coach and all the distractions. Lot of rumors surrounding next coach, assuming Davis Jr. hires someone new.

    • djloo27 said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:57 am

This guy’s done an amazing job.
Would be Raider-stupid to let him go…

  6. willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:45 am

Stanford men won again, at Wazzu, in a game where Cougs didn’t score a hoop for like 14 minutes (21-0 run by Stanford who had trailed by 11), at home. Sometimes teams get credit for tough defensive effort; these guys just couldn’t shoot at all and Cards had couple guys get hot.
On other end of spectrum, Zags score 61 last night…in first half at home vs. BYU team projected to make Tourney. Final 110-84.
Stanford women (#2 in country) return to place where they lost last year, in Boulder vs. Colorado tonight. Fun team to watch (run great high post ball movement half court offense), maybe not quite as good as last year’s champs.

  7. unca_chuck said, on January 14, 2022 at 9:01 am

Not sure why the Raiders wouldn’t give Biasacci a shot. He’s done a fantastic job given the situation.

But Prince Valiant needs to act like Jerry Jerk-Off Junior and made a stupid decision like going after Snappy Khaki Harbaugh.

    • Winder said, on January 14, 2022 at 9:07 am

I think the Raiders would be foolish to not give the new guy a shot. He’s a proven winner so far and they can probably get him cheap. But, i would love to see Harbaugh go to LV I think it’s the perfect team for him and has a much better climate than Michigan or Chicago.

  8. willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 10:10 am

Great pic in Chron of #25 Eric Davis pick 6 vs. Aikman and ‘boys 1995 NFC Championship, where Niners won 38-28.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:18 pm

One of my favorite games I saw live. 3 minutes in and we were up 21-0.

Brought a bota bag full of vodka in and got pretty hammered. Bought like 12 OJs that day.

  9. alleykat69 said, on January 14, 2022 at 11:18 am

Such a great matchup getting the 49ers and Cowboys again!
The 2 teams along with Patriots and Steelers are the only teams with 5+ SB wins.
Trivia…Last 4 winners of the 49ers/Cowboys playoff games went on to win the Super Bowl…

    • Macdog said, on January 14, 2022 at 11:39 am

Playing the last 4 times in the NFC Championship Game certainly helped.

    • Winder said, on January 14, 2022 at 12:05 pm

Those games were pretty much the SB. Not to be arrogant but usually we were considered the best two teams during those years.

  10. djloo27 said, on January 14, 2022 at 12:21 pm

Don’t take it as a put down, but the 49ers never faced any real beasts in their SB wins.
Not their fault, just the way it went.
    Go ahead, curse me out…

    • James said, on January 14, 2022 at 1:10 pm

They did have to overcome Super Duper.

    • Flavor said, on January 14, 2022 at 2:25 pm

not gonna curse you out. They played who they played. If Denver wasn’t a beast and they beat them 55-10 what would they have done to a beast? Marino was a beast. I’ll give you the two Cincy wins, nothing special there. And they absolutely destroyed an overmatched Chargers team. Again, what would they have done against a beast that year? Probably still won

      • Winder said, on January 14, 2022 at 4:30 pm

Those two Cincy teams were a lot better than the Cincy team of today. Back then they played a hard-nosed game of football. We were kind of lucky that both of those games ran out of time when they did.

I thought we were toast when we lost him.
Gregor was truly a good Giant and unsung hero.

Miss it in some crazy way?

      • unca_chuck said, on January 15, 2022 at 8:01 am

No. Saw Jim Lash’s career end shattering both his elbows diving for a pass. I was kind of excited we got him from the Vikings. It was worse than the Vet.

  13. willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 5:03 pm

wow Bulls Coby White (North Carolina alum) cut his hair.

  14. willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 5:28 pm

Zach LaVine left knee injury and will not return according to Bulls twitter guys. Dang that’s too bad helluva player, out of UCLA.

    • willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 5:28 pm

Only played 3 minutes and went right to locker room.

  15. willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 5:43 pm

Didn’t see that coming, 78 point half and 30 point lead.

    • Macdog said, on January 14, 2022 at 5:51 pm

Ha, Bulls gave up 76 in 2nd half vs. Nets on Wed. That’s 154 points allowed in their last 4 quarters.

    • willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 5:57 pm

11 steals/2 turnovers. 55 points for 5 starters, 23 off bench. Curry has 11, 3 guys have more including Kuminga off bench.
2 Bulls that each played 17 minutes, Dosunmu and T Brown Jr. (who started), combined for 0 points yikes
Fans let them have it as they left floor, twitter too.

    • willedav said, on January 14, 2022 at 6:01 pm

10 boards for Looney in 15 minutes.

  16. unca_chuck said, on January 14, 2022 at 8:25 pm

Kuminga had a nice game. Wonder why they didn’t use him vs Memphis.

Warriors up 78-47 at the half today = 31 point lead
Warriors down yesterday 77-38 = 39 point deficit

That has to be some kind of record.

Is no one else curious about a Pawlie/Zumiee collaboration?

    • unca_chuck said, on January 14, 2022 at 9:48 pm

Are they writing a book together? That would be cool.

      • djloo27 said, on January 14, 2022 at 10:02 pm

        Not sure, Chuck.
Pawlie mentioned it at the end of yesterday’s thread, I think.
That’s big stuff in these parts…

    • willedav said, on January 15, 2022 at 7:06 am

there are some from here that have reviewed his books in past, more so the great baseball ones than the others.

  19. willedav said, on January 15, 2022 at 9:11 am

Pawlie is prolific writer, with bunch of published works available on Amazon and still going strong, nothing short of amazing. Reviewers almost always enjoy reading what he’s written 4-5 stars worth. quite an accomplishment, whether it’s for his baseball stuff or otherwise (music, travel et al).

I read a lot but I’m fortunate enough to have libraries nearby that are really good, so I don’t have to buy them. Even more popular stuff, like Amor Towles “Lincoln Highway” or Colson Whitehead “Harlem Shuffle”, both very good usually available if you go on wait list for little while. Easy to spend $$ on Amazon.

    • xoot said, on January 15, 2022 at 1:21 pm

Whitehead is great. I didn’t dig The Underground Railroad as much as everyone else in the universe, but Nickel Boys and Harlem Shuffle are terrific. Towles? Not in my ambit. The Committed, Viet Thanh Nguyen, is good. Book stores, especially used book stores, are shrines.

  20. willedav said, on January 15, 2022 at 9:18 am

Did enjoy John Feinstein’s “Raise a Fist Take a Knee”, very timely considering what’s happened lately to black head coaches in NFL. Hope few of them can get other gigs, and that COs like Bienemy or Leftwich get a chance to see what they can do. i mean, guys like Judge and Meyer were such total fails and there are what 6-7 openings already, gotta wonder what some of the owners/GMs were thinking.

  21. alleykat69 said, on January 15, 2022 at 10:08 am

I still can’t get over Brian Flores firing in Miami?
Damm go coach that surely will get a new HC job, yeah they stunk early what 0-7 start but turn it around and win 8 out there last 9 that doesn’t get u fired normally.
Miami is just a clueless organization with a terrible GM,this stupid move will only set them back farther going forward…

    • Winder said, on January 15, 2022 at 10:59 am

There have been some mlb superstars from Panama, and there have been many good players and coaches, but I’ve always wondered why the numbers aren’t even higher. When I bummed my way down the Caribe coast in the 70s, I was surprised as I crossed the border to see barefoot kids carrying soccer balls turn into barefoot kids carrying baseball gloves. The Panamanian army celebrated the fourth of July, too.

  23. Macdog said, on January 15, 2022 at 5:00 pm

strange but at least Bengals finally did something right at end.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 15, 2022 at 5:58 pm

Not sure what the hell Carr is thinking there. No chance on 4th down there.

  24. alleykat69 said, on January 15, 2022 at 5:08 pm

That was the worst officiating I’ve ever seen in the Raiders/Bengals game!
That crew should never be allowed in any NFL stadium ever again!
The play with Burrow who was clearly in on the sidelines and the Ref blows his whistle thinking he stepped OB as Burrow throws a TD pass should of been ruled a dead play instead they allow the TD? Yeah NFL said a statement will follow after game on how they fucked that call up!

    • unca_chuck said, on January 15, 2022 at 5:46 pm

That’s the same fucking crew the Niners had last week. We are lucky we didn’t get fuckered over sideways by that guy. He’s notorious for innumerable holding calls.

  25. xoot said, on January 15, 2022 at 5:27 pm

Josh Allen is just bitch slapping the Patriots all night!
As expected Mac Jones is not ready for prime time playoff football.
Bills killing it on offense and Defense as Belicheat continues to mumble in disgust under his hoodie..

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on January 15, 2022 at 7:32 pm

Josh Allen is a stud. Jones will be fine, NE’s future looks bright, but yeah, not yet. Belichick will have some work to do in the off-season. Pats’ D had good numbers all year but I never trusted they were all that great. IMO, Bills are best team in AFC, Chiefs right behind them.

  27. unca_chuck said, on January 15, 2022 at 7:45 pm

What would be funny is if the 49ers meet the Bills in the Super Bowl scenario predicted by Chris Berman for about 10 years straight back in the 80s.

    • Giant Head said, on January 16, 2022 at 2:11 pm

And as you know Chuck I have a $100 riding on that matchup!!!

  28. willedav said, on January 16, 2022 at 8:18 am

Chron said of Int’l day signings, “Giants obtained one of the most highly regarded players available, 17 yr old switch-hitting SS Ryan Reckley.” Bonus was $2.2 mil, “…largest the Giants have paid to an int’l FA under FZ.”
Couple noted MLB Panamanians would be Mariano Rivera and my hero from 1979 Pirates CF Omar Moreno.

    • willedav said, on January 16, 2022 at 10:28 am

Also got couple other Cs and SS. In Chron column the OF is the pic is last guy mentioned, after 3 guys signed from DR, an OF and 2 pitchers. The Reckley kid is “ranked 9th overall int’l prospect.”

  29. mrsprtdude said, on January 16, 2022 at 11:57 am

Over under in Jimmy g picks has to be 1.5. I’ll take 1 for the win!
Lets GO! Need a big game from Mitchell!

  30. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 12:46 pm

Would love to see Niners win v Cowboys.
Cowboys play in a crap division, so their record is probably inflated and they’re not as good as record would show. That said, their offense is good in the pass department, so the Niner pass rush needs to be on point to hide their D secondary. Niner’s can’t lose the turnover battle, and Dallas leads the NFL in turnover ratio. If Jimmy G and bumb thumb gets picked twice or more and Niners don’t get their own turnover or two, the jig is probably up. BTW, if Lance turns out even close to Josh Allen quality, the Niners are in good shape the next 10 years…

    • Winder said, on January 16, 2022 at 1:15 pm

Yep, and it took Allen a couple of years to get. A lot of sports people thought he was a bust his first year.

If we lose this game it will be because of mistakes. Just don’t let it be behind incompetent refs.

  31. Giant Head said, on January 16, 2022 at 1:47 pm

    Fucking awesome opening drive

  32. Bozo said, on January 16, 2022 at 1:48 pm

Way to open this game up. 7 plays 75 yds, TD.

  33. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 2:29 pm

Why can’t the Niner kickers put the ball into or through the end zone on kickoffs?
Teams get to start near the 30 or more every friggin’ time.
I think it was a mistake to not go for it there on 4th and short by Niners deep in Cowboy territory.
You have the ball a long time and settle for 3 against this team — not so sure about that…

  34. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 2:34 pm

There you go, quick drive and Dallas gets 7 back. Niners dominated so far and now up only 6.
When Niners get Lance in there next year, hopefully once mid season and beyond, Shanahan won’t be scared to have the QB actually throw balls into the endzone from 20 to 30 yards out …

    • Winder said, on January 16, 2022 at 2:43 pm

Shanny’s gonna have to figure something out. Dallas has gotten pretty tough against the run.

  35. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 2:44 pm

Finally, kick long enough for a touchback.
Why does Shanahan almost follow a substantial pass gain like the one to Aiyuk with a run? If the run gets stuffed, then momentum stops.
Go for a dang kill shot try. Bill Walsh would always go for the throat, particularly in playoff games…

  36. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 3:20 pm

Special teams massive F up again. No way you bash the kicker when a fair catch has your team in really good field position. Just idiotic. The special teams coach just has to be canned the day after the season is done. Bosa out for the game with head injury is huge loss…

  37. pawliekokonuts said, on January 16, 2022 at 3:25 pm

  40. xoot said, on January 16, 2022 at 4:10 pm

Seems like every team they play has a better QB. But the rest of the team is terrific. Deebo? Absolutely. But many others, too. I bet Bosa will be back next week, muscle head fully recovered, ready to roar. Not that I bet all that much.

  41. xoot said, on January 16, 2022 at 4:13 pm

holy sheet. Jimmy G is just so fucking erratic. I’d still like to beat murica’s team, though.

  42. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 4:14 pm

Yet another special teams screw up, costs 3.
Then, the apparently unavoidable JimmyG idiotic, horrendous pick at the worst possible time in your own side of the field when you can take time off the clock if you just don’t give it up. Not to mention JG overthrew Aiyuk when wide open, before. Will Shanahan even trust JG to throw much anymore, or go turtle w/runs and hope ?…

  43. Winder said, on January 16, 2022 at 4:15 pm

Now Warner is out. That was the big mistake we couldn’t afford to make.

WTF is JG doing? Is he trying to throw INTs? Just give the ball to Deebo…

  46. snarkk said, on January 16, 2022 at 4:30 pm

Hopefully Bosa and Warner are able to play vs. Packers.
Is there any way at this late date to fix this Special Teams? Seems like they are asleep at the switch regularly…

That ending of the game, though the call looks right, was like the football equivalent of the bogus Flores check swing ending the SF / LA post season series. Just kind of Pfffffftttttt….

TheNiners had that game won 9 ways from Sunday and Jimmy G tried like hell to give it back. Special teams and Kyle did their share as well, but what a fucking disaster of a 4th quarter. Kyle is lucky to still be playing. McCarthy sure did his part as well. They were killed by penalties. Derp.

The special teams coach should have been fired 2 months ago. Burned 3 times On fake punts.

Running with 14 seconds left? Thanks coach!

Lame play call for sure but also on Dak for not giving the ball to the ref.

We could have lost because of a stupid call by Shanahan to have O-line shift right before the snap. Everyone knew it was a sneak. Why are we shifting there??

    • unca_chuck said, on January 16, 2022 at 7:29 pm

Why were we passing late on the play that Kittle fumbled on? If Jimmy doesn’t throw it so bad it woulda been another turnover. Shamahan was playing like he was behind by 6 not up by 6. His play calling sometimes absolutely baffles me.

As does Jimmy’s fucking awful throws. When he missed Aiyuk I thought uh oh.

It’s like Jimmy G feels he must miss an wide open receiver at a critical moment AND throw one awful pick each game. A win is a win, but lets hope he takes a game off from that strategy next week!

    Brad Johnson for the Bucs?

That last minute QB sneak by JimmyG. I just do not understand it.
The entire stadium knows that’s the play; but that’s OK. Nothing can stop JimmyG from getting the one inch needed to get the first down, and win the game.
But, Shanahan has to have Trent make the shift from LT to end of the line on the right side. Why? His position is meaningless since JimmyG is going on one side or the other of Mack’s ass. And Jimmy takes the snap and gets plenty of yardage for the winner of the game. Except, No. Trent hadn’t set yet at the snap from his stoopid, unecessary shift.
WTF? Can Shanahan ever just do something as simple as take a QB sneak and win the damn playoff game with no drama? Apparently NO…

    GB only 5 point favorite.
    Woulda thought 7-8…

Maybe because Rodgers is 0-3 vs. Niners in playoffs, though McCarthy was the Pack coach of two of those.

Thought couple times they were done for, but no. smiley face goes here/Dallas goes home to watch rest of playoffs.
