What Did We Just Witness?
The weekend began with the #1 seed getting upset with a last second field goal by a rookie kicker who was carried off the field on the shoulders of his elated teammates….who could ever have imagined at the time that that game would turn out to be the boring one.
I’m sure there’s some recency bias in play here but I’m guessing we can all agree that was the most exciting weekend of football we’ve ever collectively watched. And how bout if you’re a Bills fan. Dear God. All that franchise does is lose Super Bowls and suck for years and then they get a performance for the ages by a quarterback who might not even be in the same species as Jimmy Garappolo and all they need to do is burn 13 seconds to reach peak nirvana as a fan base….and they can’t get it done.
Unreal. Stunning. We’ll never see another 4 games like that, ever.
What a weekend. Thought the Bills had it!!! Them losing takes a big bite out of my joy and losing out on the chance to cash in that 50-1 Niners Bills Super Bowl bet. I should have added a Chiefs Niners bet as well. Beating a team in the nfl three times is going to be so very tough. Not going near that bet and cashed out after running the tease table at 9-0 last two weeks. Chief Niners rematch has a nice ring to it but I fear the Rams next week. I wanted Brady and the Bucs….
Squibb that kick and KC burns 5 seconds. All the Rams proved is they don’t know how to play with a lead.
Fuck the Rams. This is the best case scenario for the Niners.
cbs site column headline “This was wildest divisional round ever.” As Flav nailed it.
Funny, at top of screen it lists all 8 teams and scores.
so QBs: Rodgers G Burrows Tannehill Mahomes Allen Stafford Brady.
Where would you rank G in that group? And yet, he could be in SB ahead of all others except for 1.
Every game was exciting and close. Crazy. Can’t believe Buffalo played so soft. Ryans learned his lesson from the GB game in week 3. And so did Shanny.
The Rams are fairly soft and gutless as shown this last game. We need to come out fast hit hit them hard. They will fold.
1. Mahomes
2. Brady
3. Allen
4. Rodgers
5. Burrow
6. Jimmy
7. Stafford
8. Tannehill
Only reason I have Jimmy over Stafford is the 2 wins. And, soon, 3.
Also, this: Rams new policy on tickets: “…public sales for the NFC Championship game will be restricted to residents of the Greater LA region” per story in Merc. “Residency will be based on credit card billing address at checkout.”
Is that legal?
Apparently Titans did it but Bengals fans still got in.
It isn’t gonna matter. Whoever buys them will turn around and sell them to Niner fans. What a stupid policy.
Are they gonna check IDs at the gate? “Waitaminute! San Lorenzo?? Get the fuck out of here!”
I wonder if Stubhub will have tickets. Bet they don’t give a shit who buys tickets as long as their money is good.
Of course they will. That;s why this policy is nothing but lip service.
Doubt it’s legal Loo, It’s a crock of shit if u ask me.They don’t have a loyal fan base once they pulled up stakes over 20+ years to move to StLouis it’s a joke now for both the Rams and Chargers sharing that stadium being alienated by their fan bases.
Yeah doesn’t get much more exciting on Defibrillator weekend on the recliner to watch 4 Freaking playoff games end on Walkoffs!”
Just OWN The Rams one more time and the 49ers punch their Ticket back to the same stadium for a SB that was totally unrealistic after a 3-6? start even to make the playoffs.Either way they could get a rematch with teams they’ve faced before again Cincinnati are KC pretty cool scenario..
um, with all the talk about rematch, didn’t consider the unthinkable–Niners Bengals, as in SB XVI Jan 24 1982.
cbs site picks both to win this coming weekend.
That 1st 49ers/Bengals SB still is rated #1 on CBS with 49.5 million viewers overall nation wide close to 88 million viewers.
Unc, those QB rankings very fair, but considering how G looked vs. Titans when they lost that one and he got excoriated for shoddy play and missed opportunities, he could still be 7-8.
No way he’s worse than Tannehill. I’m no Jimmy lover, but he isn’t that bad.
Any win now for the Niners is just gravy.
They were dead in the water at 3-5, and everybody clamoring to swap Lance in for JimmyG. To end up in the NFC title game is a staggeringly good recovery.
Shanahan stayed his course, and it worked out, so he should get some credit, along with Lynch. A major thing that happened is that they finally got a lot of players healthy at the same time.
Niners have the Rams number. But, even so, it’s going to be hard to win a 7th straight game against them. Tempting fate. Still, it’s better to take a one hour flight and play in the same time zone to play against a team with debatable smarts and heart, than fly across country to face Brady in a title game. Brady almost pulled it out yesterday. I’d give Niners a better chance v. Rams than the Bucs, the Bucs are better against the run. And crunch time, it’s obviously Brady over Stafford…
I think we are gonna cruise. All about the fast start. The Rams are gonna sell out on the run early so we need to counter with misdirection sweeps and drag routes with Kittle. I thought we should have done that against the Packers, but maybe too risky in the cold? I don’t know, but we did wear the Pack down and got the run game gong. Last week’s issues will be gone.
Get pressure on Stafford and it is game over. Ryans has surprised me with his blitzing, and it was really effective 3 weeks ago.
Rams pass rush got it going yesterday against the Bucs. Could have been because the Rams got up so much early on, knew Brady was going to be pass happy, so didn’t respect the run…
The Bucs run game is pretty lame.
Great week of football. Incredible. And I know this will piss off Loo to no end (sorry Loo, nothing personal my friend), but I so hoped the Chiefs lost. I fucking cannot stand them.
I fucking cannot stand Reid or Mahomes. There is a part of me that wants to see the Bengals beat the Chiefs, but there is also a part that wants to Chiefs in the SB with a Niner rematch.
Whatever. Bring on the lambs and whoever else is standing. Go Niners.
Only 21 days until pitchers and catchers report…..
I don’t see Cincy beating Mahomes and the Chiefs. Then again, KC’s defense is a shit-show.
Anything can happen. And probably will.
After we beat the Rams to get into the playoffs i said it would be a trip to beat Dallas, Green Bay, and the Rams to face Cincy in the Super Bowl. Just might happen.
If they weren’t Chiefs, I’d hate em too, Chi…
I get it Loo. And again, nothing personal. I think I have mentioned that in growing-up in Oklahoma, my entire family, except my dad, were all cowgirl fans. My dad was a Chief fan, so I followed them as a kid, too.
Rams have pulled their restriction on tickets selling to non-LA zip codes. Ticketmaster just reported this, apparently. I suspect Rams lawyers took a look and considered possibility Rams were violating one or more CA unfair/illegal business practice statutes, anti-competition laws, maybe other laws, too. CA B&P code 17200 comes to mind, it’s kind of an omnibus “bad business practice” statute. I’m sure an artful lawyer can come up with a legal theory or two that is violated by the Rams nonsense…
Not gonna stop from LA fans from selling to Niner fans. This was only for the limited tickets for sale by the team.
This one got me…
In LA it goes Lakers, Dodgers and then Rams.
I lived a while during the early ’80s in LA.
Rams were there. From what I saw, I’d put USC ahead of the Rams in terms of a fan following. I’d still go with that, now…
I think they are behind the Kings now. And UCLA.
There are to many things going on down there on a continual basis. Not only sports but if you have the money there is no end of things to do. It’s Monday night and I bet there are 20-30 top notch bands playing tonight somewhere in the LA area.
Yeah I forgot about USC, maybe even UCLA is ahead of the Rams
I don’t know if the rams’ ticket restriction harmed any fans. As Uc said, there wasn’t much for sale, and the rams took down the restriction notice when that stack sold out (or so they say). There’s something odd about using credit card info (zip codes) to impose the bans, though. Maybe VISA, AmEx or the CA AG would have an interest in that move. But section 17200 got neutered years ago (prop 64, iirc), so the average fan has no standing to use it. And what good’s an injunction now, anyway? No damages or atty fees available. iirc.
Speaking of which, Mac Williamson’s case, after an astonishingly long and expensive bunch of federal and state court battles, got sent to arbitration earlier this month — mlb arbitration. In the end, his artful lawyers’ share will amount to wages of between zero and five bucks an hour. But I bet you those lawyers will add Mac’s case to the list of high-profile matters they proudly tout on their website.
Old people dying isn’t unusual, but these days it seems like there’s another every day. Don Wilson from the Ventures, 88. I was too young to know the Ventures well, but definitely remember some of those guitar songs….
Saw ‘em at the great American music hall in 81 (?). Very fun show. The Hellecasters opened for them..
I guess they’re still performing, that’s pretty amazing…
weren’t there couple different versions per year–like walk don’t run 65, etc.?
Yeah, I think they did new versions a few times. I’d forgotten that the great Steve Howe covered Walk Don’t Run in ’98…
And of course….
This is the new version, but I’ll go back to the old one with Jack Lord:
Book ’em, Danno ! …
Never missed that show as a kid. Must admit, I liked the reboot as well. I remember talking to some students here about the show, they watched the new one but didn’t know about the Jack Lord days. Showed an old episode in class one day and some students found it unbelieveable when Dan-o or Steve had to find a payphone to call each other. “Why don’t they just use their mobile phones??” ……. ah, kids today.
Occasionally I still hear someone on TV say “don’t touch that dial”
I think Nantz said it yesterday.
That could baffle someone under 40…
Whenever I hear it said now, I can only think of “I’m the Slime” by Zappa on Overnite Sensation: “That’s right folks, don’t touch that dial……. I am the slime from your video…”
Yep! I was halfway to posting Zappa on SNL when he played that song.
“Walk Don’t Run” was one of the few tunes penned by ace jazz guitarist Johnny Smith. I came upon his version from the mid 50s about twenty years ago and have favored it since. Apparently, The Ventures adapted a Chet Atkins cover of Smith’s original.
wow thanks James that was great.
Paul “I’m the Slime” is great Zappa tune and I thought same thing about “Don’t touch that dial.”
Yep thanks, never heard that before.
‘Kam Fong as Chin Ho’ used to make me laugh as a kid. Loved this show.
Jack Lord had equity in the show as exec producer through the majority of the back part of its run.
He finally nailed his nemesis Wo Fat at or near the end of the series…
Sounds familiar
Love the sign.
Liquor in the front, Poker in the rear.
With the incomparable Terry Bozzio on drums and Patrick O’Hearn on bass.
Ha thanks man. Zappa’s drummers were fantastic.
Pure genius.
Dare I post Punky’s Whips here? Maybe just this one. One of the comments is ‘Terry always plays the drums like his life depends on it.’ Love it.
9 Head Coaching positions now available as Saints Sean Payton stepping away from head coaching position..
Maybe he can hire Gregg (the 2nd G is for genius) Williams to fill his spot. He of the bountygate scandal and the zero blitz coverage on the last play of the Raider game that Carr hit Ruggs to beat the Jets.
I think we are gonna lose DeMeco, and probably Peters. I have been one of those who have complained about our drafting but after seeing how our players have come together it’s hard to be too critical of anything. The last few weeks have been a great ride, hope it continues.
I think DeMeco sticks around one more year.
I hope so.
In the late 1950s, rock and roll took a big hit. Elvis was drafted in the military, Buddy Holly died, Jerry Lee Lewis had several self-inflicted problems. So what was good in rock music between the late ’50s and the Beatles’ arrival? There were some great black performers, and there were the instrumental guitar bands. Those guitar bands really kept guitar music going. When the Beatles tried out for Decca Records and were rejected, the reason given by the record company was that “guitar bands are on their way out.” Bad forecasting by Decca Records.
Just imagine all the great stuff they wouldn’t put on the air that we never got to hear. In the name of morals. They wanted the world to be like Mayberry. At least Ozzie and Harriet had a musical son.
Wow. Big Papi gets in to the HoF and Barry doesn’t. How’s that for an extra slap in the face? Ortiz of course was one of the 100 names from the list that included Bonds, ManRam, and A-Roid among a bunch of others.
Ridiculous.
Pathetic.
Well, with these other committees you still get more chances.
Next one in December is what I think I heard.
That list of 100 never fully came out, did it?
Wonder how they managed to bury it…
Prolly 10-15 of them are enshrined.
Totally expected.
Not a surprise in the least. The writers vote is a total, absolute joke.
Big Papi was/is a baseball media darling, so what’s a reported PEDs positive test that was supposed to be MLB confidential, to stop his HOF entry? Nothing, apparently.
Bonds will have to come in via veterans committee.
The “young” (1988- onward players) committee meets this December. Maybe he’ll have traction there, probably not.
12 of 16 members needed for election…
I know Rose will get in like Ron Santo did. Not sure about Bonds.
Fuck the HOF, fuck the voters and fuck MLB.
Damn. Breaking out the heavy shit, Loo!!
I agree, fuck the voters and MLB. It’s all about the dollars and personal bullshit. I wish the HOF voters were vetted and have their history’s made public.
No shit. These lilly white holier-than-thou motherfuckers doing the voting should just get the fuck out of the way.
One of the most devastating scenes in a movie, ever.
Deerhunter won the best movie oscar, deservedly, but seemingly isn’t much discussed, though in the top 100 AFI list for all time best movies…
Possibly most depressing movie I’ve ever seen.
Followed by Ordinary People, West Side Story and Blazing Saddles…
Blazing Saddles? That and Young Frankenstein are a couple of my favorite comedies. Throw in The 12 Chairs and the Producers. Zero Mostel is amazing.
With ya on Ordinary People. Throw Deliverance in that mix. Great movie, outstanding acting, but like The Deer Hunter, the dark cloud you drag around for 3-4 days after watching it is real.
Meanwhile in other HOF news:
Kent: 33% of votes (1 year left). All time HR leader of 2nd baseman, more RBIs than MANY HOFers…
Scott Rolen: 63% of votes. Seriously? (5 years left)
Bonds: 66% (done)
Harold Baines (already in)
Total nonsense…
It’s worse than a popularity contest. It’s a fucking beauty contest.
This train of thought will lead Buster straight into the hall, though. So there’s that. Possibly even Bummie, based on his postseason record.
Jim Kaat? 3 good years out of 25? No Cy Youngs? Fuck that.
OJ is still in the football HOF.
What is old man Goldman waiting for?
He must be 80 something years old.
Kill the motherfucker on the golf course and die happy!
San Francisco’s own. Galileo HS, CCSF before USC.
Yeah, I’d be going all Ellie Nesler on his ass.
I once severely sprained my ankle playing volleyball in the gym at Galileo HS.
(Sometimes I feel like my life has become just an endless series of pointless non-sequitors…..)
Hah!! No shit. Everything anyone said to my mom reminded her of a song that she would immediately start singing.
I find myself doing that now. Kinda like Don’t touch that dial!!! Fuck. Now I’m going in circles.
I do that too. “There’s a song for everything, and everything has a song”…..
