A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

It’s Happening Again……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 28, 2022

I believe this is the 17th NFC championship game for San Francisco. Either that or this will be #18. Either way, to me, this isn’t about this one game. It’s the anticipation that we get all week. It’s the memories of the last 3 weeks AND what could happen if they win on Sunday. And if they do, after that, it’s another two weeks of hopeful dreams of destiny. That’s what is great about all this. Sure, it’s just one game on Sunday. But the excitement it fuels before and after it can last for weeks (and beyond).

I don’t have a great feel for what’s going to happen in this game. I think I’ve talked myself into them winning it. Either way, I will happily lock myself up in my house and settle in for another afternoon of excitement, stress, Jimmy induced misery and, hopefully by the last click on the clock, utter ecstacy…….

Can’t wait.

Yep, this will be the 49ers’ 17th NFC title game. They’re 7-9 overall, 2-4 on the road and 1-0 vs the Rams.

17th, tied with Steelers for Conference title games.
5 NFC title games since 2011.
Giants had 3 NLCS since 2010, generating 3 WS trophies.
Dubs with 5 title series since 2015, 3 trophies.
Not a bad decade or so for Bay Area pro sports…

    • Macdog said, on January 28, 2022 at 8:54 am

Steelers at 16 overall (8-8), so this will break the tie for most.

      • snarkk said, on January 28, 2022 at 9:00 am

That’s what I get for believing sports talk radio…

    • willedav said, on January 28, 2022 at 8:56 am

Past season too. Giants took Division away from Dodgers and won 107 games.
Warriors poised to be one of top seeds in West conference with legit shot at winning it all.
As I’m typing this, sun is already out and should be mid to upper 60s.

I don’t feel comfortable about this weeks game either. Stafford has never been this close to a trophy before and he is a lot more accurate than Jimmy. You can bet his best effort will be on display Sunday. This game will be won in the trenches. I hope Trent can play at his level. This should really be a good game.

    • willedav said, on January 28, 2022 at 9:55 am

Agree about trench battle. Niners as Chuck has said have done OK vs. Donald and Miller and run successfully against Rams, while Bosa and Co. have been able to pressure Stafford and slow down running game. Stafford is in uncharted waters and imo has never been standout QB; hopefully special teams aren’t giving things away.
Cautious optimism G can successfully drive ball down field to score enough points for W.

Coolest play I saw last weekend was TD pass to Tyreek. The DB is trailing him on slant, he turns corner as he nears sideline and runs by everyone. All I could think of Keith Olberman in his caricature voice saying “They’re not gonna get him”, and no one did.

Despite not having Bob Hayes type speed, they used to say same thing about Jerry Rice. Once he had ball and lead on defender, no one was gonna catch him from behind.

It’s easy to be frustrated at Jimmy G with some bonehead throws and every analyst/ sportswriter etc jump on that, but the bottom line he’s made incredible plays are just enough down the stretch to win games. He’s taken down Burrow,Stafford,Prescott,Rodgers all road games in hostile environments (Levi South Rams stadium not so much) yeah the ST was incredible against the Pack, but Jimmy still end the end needed to manage a drive for Gould’s walkoff game winning FG and he did that like he did against the Bengals and Rams( just to get into the playoffs)in OT!
Is he the worst QB left in the playoffs, sure he is, (he’s The Rodney Dangerfield of no respect)but so far nobody’s got the best of him and with the most physical defense left of the 4, and defense wins championships in most cases and Kyle’s dominance over his whipping boy McVay along with a sea of red that’s in the Rams heads, it’s 49ers in a tight one 27-24 to play in the SB!! In what is their home field stadium now..

Anyone who is a Montana fan I recommend the Montana documentary on Peacock. They have gone though 5 episodes and have just one more to be put out next Thursday. It’s probably me but there are so many things I think I remember but I am wrong on a lot of it. My excuse is I used to drink more than I should have.

  7. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2022 at 11:57 am

For whatever reason, I’m feeling good about this one. I think we overpower them on the line and get on top of the Rams. Force Stafford to throw and get after him. He makes mistakes under pressure and we will capitalize.

Again, though it’ll come down to Jimmy and his passing. He has had some great plays but he really makes some awful throws. He had 2 near pick 6s in the GB game as well as the pick and the pass that nearly got Mitchell killed.

    Fuck my ass.

    • willedav said, on January 28, 2022 at 3:06 pm

Chron said Thomas was full participant at practice yesterday, good thing.

  9. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2022 at 2:08 pm

Well, McKivitz wasn’t terrible, but he ain’t Trent Williams. Williams is saving his strength. I hope. Willis came back from the same kind of deal and was able to make the play of the season last weekend.

    • Winder said, on January 28, 2022 at 3:04 pm

Just listened to the Shanny presser a few minutes ago and he refused to even talk about Williams. He wouldn’t take any questions about him. Never seen that before.

      • djloo27 said, on January 28, 2022 at 3:17 pm

Coaches and managers get pressured into disclosing so much stuff these days.
You can’t get shit out of Belichick.
        That’s how it should be…

      • Winder said, on January 28, 2022 at 3:38 pm

I agree. That’s the first time I’ve seen Shanny do it.

  10. unca_chuck said, on January 28, 2022 at 4:45 pm

Shanny’s in bunker mode. Williams is literally dying to play.

  11. alleykat69 said, on January 28, 2022 at 6:04 pm

Its just a chess match with injuries, no coach needs to give out squat till an hour are 2 before a game, just like in FF u need to keep up with till almost game time. Yeah Belichick is the worst giving any info out that’s for sure!
Williams will go I bet too big a game for him not to be laying punishing blocks!
Then after we win this one, he will have 2 weeks to get that ankle feeling much improved along with the rest of the squad, cause all teams are banged up this time of the year!

    • Winder said, on January 28, 2022 at 6:22 pm

I understand all that but usually Shanny says something even if it’s total bullshit. I am just talking about his injury reports.

Lady Sun Devils of ASU in town to play #2 Stanford. Leading scorer for Arizona State is Jade Loville, daughter of former Niners running back Derek. She’s got 6 hoops at halftime for game high 12 points (along with Stanford Haley Jones). Problem is, rest of her entire team has 5 points in 20 minutes, and they are down 19.

Speaking of stats, it still blows my mind that Willie Mays was selected to the All Star team 24 times and started 18 of them.

    • djloo27 said, on January 28, 2022 at 9:56 pm

But you know Paul it’s skewed by the fact that the ASG was so popular they played 2 per year from 1959-1962.
      I hope I didn’t un-blow your mind…

      • willedav said, on January 29, 2022 at 7:35 am

I don’t remember watching those at the time, but did they play one each in NL/ AL parks? what a cool idea, that fans would be treated to game with all the best players in both leagues. Also, would completely not work with today’s game, where no team would allow its pitchers (and others) to do that.

      • Irish Kevin said, on January 29, 2022 at 9:06 am

Well I was 4 years old in 1959, so I don’t remember any of those games. Ha ha

  14. willedav said, on January 29, 2022 at 9:02 am

One of the two AS games played in 1961 was at Stick, July 11. Starting OF for NL was Cepeda Mays and Clemente, latter 2 played entire game, with Bill White at 1b. Frank Robinson and Hank Aaron came off bench. This was famous game Stu Miller was “blown off” mound by wind, which he always said did not happen, and NL won in extras.

    • willedav said, on January 29, 2022 at 10:22 am

I was almost 10 so I do remember watching this one.

  15. Irish Kevin said, on January 29, 2022 at 9:09 am

This will be the most watched game this weekend. It should beat the Cowboy/Niner game, that was the most watched game that weekend. This is going to be exciting. I see myself going crazy, one second I am cheering and the next it will be WTF was that! This Niners team is the 2010 SF Giants. No one picked them to win. I think Niners fans play a huge part in this! Some sports analysts say the Rams are a different team than the one the Niners beat in the regular season, I say BS, all teams had issues during the year, 3 weeks is going to make a team better? I don’t think so, health wise yes. But having the same talent you had 3 weeks ago. Ha! If that what the Rams think…they will be on the couch tipping a beer watching the SB.

    • willedav said, on January 29, 2022 at 10:26 am

I think what Chuck said on his blog is spot on. Credit to Shanahan play calling for figuring out how to be competitive and successful in second half given what he has to work with on offense. Play that won game he wanted to get Gould 5 yards closer, so he has G hand ball off to Samuel and it worked perfectly.

  16. alleykat69 said, on January 29, 2022 at 9:24 am

Leave it to a player over a coach to slip up over an injury.
Jimmy G said Trent Williams has a high ankle sprain..
Definitely worst case scenario, high ankle sprains are the worst
over a low ankle sprain. Still I expect to go,treatments, shoot him up, tape him up
    good.
Yeah he will still eventually limp around out there I can see that, but he’s an ALL PRO LT
that’s still hits like a car at full speed coming straight at you,and they need that against Darnold
and the pass and run game..

    • Winder said, on January 29, 2022 at 11:26 am

Kat- I like your optimism but there is a reason players are out 4-6 weeks for a high ankle sprain. To be honest i would sit him and hope he gets better after the two week bullshit SB stuff. That is of course we win this one.

      • Winder said, on January 29, 2022 at 11:30 am

I wonder if Shanny told Jimmy to spill it like that when in reality it’s a minor sprain. It would be smart to play it like that if he did.

Jan 29 is b-day of legendary bassist James Jamerson of Motown fame. that’s him on the opening notes of “My Girl” and so many others on his Fender Precision, the “Funk Machine” of famous Funk Brothers Detroit backup band on countless hit records.

I hope those guys got the royalties they deserved over their lifetimes.
I highly doubt it – and that would be a shame.
      They did it all…

      Awesome, thanks!
Column I read on Mr. Jamerson said things went south for him once Berry Gordy moved business to LA and abandoned Detroit guys, and music scene never recovered for them. Saw Miracles live at Circle Star in early ’70s, group still intact from the one in photo.
