A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The End

Posted in Uncategorized by twinfan1 on January 31, 2022

Pffffttttt…well, nectarine always tastes sweeter if you’ve known the bitter taste of defeat. And it get no more bitter than Kyle blowing yet another 4th quarter lead in a huge game. The play calling was terrible but sometimes something you want so badly just isn’t meant to be. Tartt dropped that ball and it forebode an unwanted destiny. The ghost of Kyle Williams……

But Niner fans should shed no tears. It wasn’t the end we dreamed of but it was a season we can be thankful for. We won’t have Jimmy to kick around anymore but Kyle will be here and he can take the punishment. There is hope for the future with Trey.

That was a fun season.

I did not have a lot emotionally invested in this game thinking we would lose but my high school kid had more emotion his first bitter defeat. But as a kid he loves the Bengals because of their uniforms so he has something to root for.

The last two drives perfect encapsulation of Garappolo’s tenure. Just like the KC SB he just needed to put together a few first down game over and then misses you he wide open guy for an easy potential game winning td. Loved seeing Debo’s emotion but expect Shanahan will survive one more year but it won’t be to usher in a new Trey Lance era. Can John Lynch work with his old and only nfl team as a player and talk them in a Tom Brady deal. I don’t understand the nfl salary rules but can the Niners pay his $15 mill signing bonus and give him a $10 mill salary and that $25 mill is the amount that will be saved on Garappolo’s 2022 contract after his release.

Brady? WTF are you smoking, dude? That shit will not happen. Shanny will be at the helm next year, and it WILL BE to usher in the Trey Lance era. Book it. You will not see Brady in a Niner uni next year.

We shouldn’t overlook the toughness of Jimmy. I bet that thumb hurt every single second he was on the field since he hurt it. Respect..

    Sarge knows what’s up

Yep. Del gets it. I’ll be rocking my Niners lid today when I go meet the guys for cocktails.

wow great pic. At 3-5 halfway mark of season, getting this far way beyond expectations. I’ve just seen so few comments about line play, especially on D, where I thought SF would own Rams. And flat out didn’t. This was where I thought they were gonna win battle and game, not lose.
As Flav said, “Respect” (with capital R) for G. Time to move on.

  5. unca_chuck said, on January 31, 2022 at 8:38 am

Jimmy did what he could with the plays called for him. This failure is squarely on Shanahan. Seeing us run into the line over and over with no results led to more running up the middle. No misdirection, no jet sweeps. Slants were working so we stopped throwing them.

I don’t think Deebo touched the ball in the 4th quarter. Shanny does not know how to close out a game. That being said, Stafford gave the game to us and we didn’t make the play.

I don’t really want Shanahan coaching Lance next season. If this was Eddie’s team, Shanny would be fired today.

    • willedav said, on January 31, 2022 at 8:58 am

which you know for better or worse is so not happening. Replenish O line and DBs (sorrily outplayed by Rams) and more depth on D line. Shanahan will have strong armed mobile QB to work with, something completely different.

  6. unca_chuck said, on January 31, 2022 at 9:28 am

What bothered me the most was even though Moseley had help over the top with ODB, he played him soft. Same with Kupp..

And we got killed by TE screens all day. Every 3rd down and long was converted. I tell you, I’d rather get burned on one big play rather than give up 12 little ones. And playing soft did just that. Nowadays you can only hit guys at the line, so do it there. am guys at the line, especially ODB, to throw off the timing rather than just sit back to give up 12.

On KNBR this morning they gave out a list of QB ratings in the 4th quarter of something like the last 30 years of NFL playoff games. 69 QBs, 1 being best and 69 being worst. Guess who came in 69th?…

  8. willedav said, on January 31, 2022 at 10:08 am

Despite score at end of first half, Rams ability to control clock (they ran 42 plays vs. 20 for SF) and keep Niners D out there with Akers running ball and successfully converting all those 3rd downs doomed SF. Stafford was lighting them up even against blitz (and his receivers dropping TD passes) and ran for first down, Kupp was dominating, and Niners D eventually wore out in 4th.

  9. snarkk said, on January 31, 2022 at 10:37 am

Shanahan has his faults, but JG was one of them. What elite team has a QB that only throws inside the numbers? That’s because JG can’t throw long outs due to lack of arm strength and inaccuracy. Shanahan had to pare back what certainly could have been a wider passing repertoire while JG was with them due to JG’s limitations. Defenses know that. The Rams finally got smart and stacked the box to force JG to beat them with his arm and thumb. He couldn’t. Shanahan’s play calling and stubborn reliance on the run is/was partly a result of not trusting JG with the keys to a broader pass attack, even when healthy. And Kittle would be catching more than 1 or 2 passes a game instead of being turned into a highly paid, mobile lineman. And Deebo wouldn’t be on the fast track to getting his body turned into mush by being a RB instead of a WR with an occasional run. If the Niners had any of the 3 other QBs in the Final Four they’d win the SBowl…

    • chipower9 said, on January 31, 2022 at 11:56 am

Well, with your final comment it appears you are predominantly putting this loss on Jimmy G. I disagree. I pin most of it on Shanny’s play calling in the 4th. Once again the Niners go into the 4th quarter with a lead and cannot sustain it.

The slants disappeared. Where were the jet sweeps? This team had what it took to win it all this year. They just failed to execute (across the board): JG’s missed passes, the dropped interception, Ward’s personal foul…the list goes on and on. Rams basically won the line of scrimmage most of the day and that is where games are won and lost. But JG was not the main reason the Niners lost, IMO.

Solid lid Del, I think I have the same one laying around!
Yeah terrible play calling for sure, why does every time LT Williams pull on a run to the outside
the back just plows to the gut of the D-L? Same shit happened in the Pack game which was stuffed like this game it’s an easy read to defend when u know it’s the same play every time! Shanahan &Lynch are still not going anywhere so squash the ideas Unca.Didn’t Shanny even get an extension?

Anyway both coaches sucked equally.McVay’s burning TO ‘s on useless challenges and running out of them with 10 minutes left trailing I thought would work out great , but sadly no.

25.5 salary are 1.5 buy out duh your moving on from Jimmy and using that money on contract extension ( oh some guy named Deebo to start) get what u can in a Jimmy trade for picks ( guessing 3rd rd at best?) there still are several teams in football in need of a QB and the draft QB’s look weak this year so maybe the Niners and Jimmy’s overall year give them some leverage. SECONDARY REBUILD IT Top Priority in draft, OL Second!!!
Screw the usual I have to draft a DL every year freaking year first! Still overall to get to the championship series is still impressive after a 3-5 start,Still Proud of the team fighting hard till the bitter in, next year should be exciting again!

    • Giant Head said, on January 31, 2022 at 11:24 am

I don’t think anyone is going to give jack for JG. He will just be released.

      • unca_chuck said, on January 31, 2022 at 12:20 pm

Wrong. There are a bunch of teams desperate for anything resembling an NFL QB. Houston, Denver, New Orleans, Vegas, Tennessee, Baltimore, the Giants, to name a few.

Horse face gave Brock Osweiler $127 million. He’s ripe to be fucked again. I’d be happy with a 3 and a 4 but I could see getting a 2 from Denver.

  11. snarkk said, on January 31, 2022 at 11:02 am

Lance has to have benefited from this season on the bench with two games of simple duty to get his feet wet. Next season, no doubt he’s still going to have growing pains for at least half the season. Hopefully the last half he will have a light go off and Shanahan will be able to open up the playbook and Shanahan keeps designed QB runs to a minimum so he doesn’t get hurt. Niners have a 3rd place in the division schedule next year, so there’s that help. I can see them make another wild card appearance next year, but the season certainly is going to have its ups and downs with a hopefully soon-to-be top QB learning the ropes. Hopefully in 2023 Lance will blossom into something like Burrow or Allen so that this slant-happy conservative passing attack is a thing of the past, and Kittle will start catching passes again, and stop watching the few targets he gets sail over his head. Mahomes level skills would be a dream…

  12. Flavor said, on January 31, 2022 at 11:47 am

the niners will get a 2nd rd pick for Jimmy. Book it.

    • alleykat69 said, on January 31, 2022 at 11:59 am

Yeah I would do cartwheels for that and the Saints will provide it my guess!

      Ahh forgot about the Saints.

      • Winder said, on January 31, 2022 at 1:13 pm

I think the Saints are a clusterfuck, even their HC walked away.

    • snarkk said, on January 31, 2022 at 1:18 pm

I think they get a 2nd in current year and throw in a 3rd or 4th in the next year. Niners have been doing well in value picks down in the draft…

  13. Winder said, on January 31, 2022 at 1:11 pm

I think a lot of things depend on what kind of contract Jimmy wants. There are probably quite a few teams that would rent him for a year or possibly two. My guess is he gets a 4 yr deal with Denver.

  14. willedav said, on January 31, 2022 at 2:20 pm

Shanahan said after Mitchell 9 yd run, he thought Rams “couldn’t stop us.”. So what followed were the 2 runs that didn’t work and after the punt, the ball Tartt (DB hands) dropped. 3 plays that turned everything around. And of course, that 9 yd gain was more than any offensive play in the 7 minutes left in game afterward by SF.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 31, 2022 at 3:46 pm

Wow. One good run after 15 that went for 2 or less.

      Brilliant strategist. He’s forever Shamahan.

    • unca_chuck said, on January 31, 2022 at 3:51 pm

I’ve been hoping (screaming at the walls) for misdirection plays since the playoffs started and we did very little of that in all 3 games. Those plays WORKED all through the season. The slants were working early.

Even that last TD drive was infuriating as EVERY 1st down was a 0 to 1 yard run. Shanny throws away downs like I drink beer. All game long.

Drives me batshit because eventually you get a penalty, a loss of yards, some idiotic play calling, or some other stupid thing that kills a drive.

The thing about Garoppolo is he has one year left on his current deal. We get all but $1.4 mill back from the $27 mill if we trade him.

So he’s no burden to a team looking for a quarterback. The fans may hate him, but front offices see a guy who didn’t raise a stink about his situation and gutted out his season dealing with a ton of shit. Plus, his his likability will go a LONG way in his favor seeing as a team like NO (or Denver, Houston, NYG, Miami, TB, or whoever) will get a guy who garners his teammates respect, showed Trey the ropes, and will likely do the same thing for the team we trade him to. All those teams that are looking for QBs will draft one and try to give them a season on the bricks with good old Jimmy at the helm.

He would be perfect for the next up and coming QB to mentor. He can be the on-field QB whisperer. We should be able to get at least a 3 and 4, if not better. Either that or someone throws a big extension at him, and we get a couple picks.

    • Winder said, on January 31, 2022 at 5:05 pm

i would throw the Jets in on that also. Wilson needs more time otherwise he’s gonna be beat up before he has the chance to be good.

        Mahomes sucks…
