Day 68
As the lockout drags on, I continue to struggle for content. I was texting with a prominent Flap HOFer over the weekend. He wondered if the Flap was dying. Sadly, I told him it probably was. But I think he was surprised to find out that I interact with a dozen or so other Flap HOFers on twitter every day–hall of famers who otherwise don’t post regularly at the Flap anymore. Just something to think about. As we all know, I can’t keep this place running forever…..
Well that’s sad, but I suppose inevitable. I still poke my head in from time to time. But this lockout really has me turned off on baseball. I’m not sure I’ll ever be back with the fervor that I had before. Maybe if they some how miraculously figure it out and manage to start the season on time all will be forgiven. I just don’t see the happening. That’s the heartbreaking thing, after the white knuckle thrill ride that was last season, I was highly looking forward to this season and seeing what kind of magic Farhan would conjure up. Anyway my twitter handle is @sfbayn8tive give me a follow. That’s the place where I’m most active.
Flav, here’s one for Wilco. Neighbor of mine originally from Texas who still has family there tells me Matthew Stafford played HS football at Highland Park, just outside Dallas and well known for elite academic achievement awards.
see, if you were on twitter you could tweet that too him. Wilco, Diggity, Dirt, Blade, Xoot, Kokonuts, Unca Chuck….just to name a few. Those dudes are all over twitter….
Agree with Sarge about it being sad if The Flap is truly dying. Nothing can last forever, and it makes it even more difficult with the shenanigans around the lock-out.
I hope the Flap lives on for a while. I certainly enjoy the interactions with those who still frequent.
Have never done the twitter thing. Just not sure I need another social media account chewing-up my time. Sigh….
Twitter just ain’t for me…
I kind of feel the same, Loo. All the more reason I hope this site lives on for some time.
Article in the Athletic this morning has the Dodgers farm system rated #1, AZ’s #3, and Giants at #9. Not sure if the minors can be active or not but it would be a shame if everyone was still until things get figured out.
Twitter is way random, but Super70sSports is hysterical and the main reason i ever go to twitter.
And yeah i do bump into Flav and Sandawg occasionally. Wouldn’t be the same without this place, and if the season ever gets going Im sure this would pick up.
There’s always the stable mates.
Yeah but what about all those disloyal deserters?
Rack ’em and torture them into participation?
Just another reminder that February is the worst month for sports. Thank god it’s only 28 days.
This owner lockout brings the definition of killing it, full circle.
Klay with 3 and assist for Porter dunk and GS up 14. OKC without Shai Gilgeous Alexander (Kentucky product who played HS ball in Chattanooga) lot less fun to watch.
Knicks here Thursday. Talk on cbs site said they are in on picking up C J McCollum from Blazers, noted Warrior nemesis.
career .396 from 3, .485 from 2, and 82% FT. 7 straight seasons including this one of 20+ a game.
Of course Craig can’t do this forever, but it sure would be sad to see the Flap go. Maybe Charlie’s idea of (Un)stable mates taking it over is a good idea. Sort of a Horn & Hardart automat of a blog.
When do you get to be too old for twitter? I have an account but never use it! i may have to figure it out if the Flap goes away. lets hope it doesn’t!
Twitter is great. No better place to access info immediately u just gotta know who to follow. Funny stuff on there too. Not to mention a dozen+ Flap HOFers to interact with regularly
We did the stable mate thing before. There was a handful of us that agreed to a rotation, and on your day, you would be responsible for creating the thread. I am open to something like this down the road if Craig wants to pass the reins.
Giants beat writers Baggs Slush and Shea have twitter accounts. I’ll often follow along cbs site on laptop during games I’m watching with K and K, and they will post something on sidebar with link to twitter, sometimes with pic of game play. Good reads, though there are often nutjob troll replies mixed in… none of what you get here.
Slush is often taking on wackos who disagree with her takes or columns from other Chron writers she retweets. Like Dubon said about 2021 Giants, there aren’t any (fill in blank) of those type of objectionable people here, just dedicated long time fans, few of whom I’ve had great fortune to have met in person..
when she came out as bi last June (Pride month) the outpouring of sports-fan hatred on twitter was a bit startling. The clamorous response in her favor was pretty impressive, too, however. Like all of the chron writers, she has the others’ backs no matter what (no matter how mediocre they are — shea hey! killion!). If I were struggling to keep a job, maybe I would, as well. But she and Baggarly tweet good stuff during games and during the season, generally. Pavlovic is ok and he seems to get access the other don’t. I agree with Flavor — twitter on the phone is a great way to get instant info.
“stablemates” is a jazz standard composed by sax player Benny Golson in 1955. He recorded it in great 1958 session on Blue Note, “Benny Golson and the Philadelphians” with Lee Morgan Ray Bryant Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones.
Miles Davis recorded it in 1955 for Prestige on “The New Miles Davis Quintet” with Coltrane and rhythm section Red Garland Paul Chambers and Philly Joe.
Rangers made minor league deal with 1b/OF Joe McCarthy. Pretty good season at Sac last year: 275 ABs 15 bombs
slash line .306/.384/.542 for .926 OPS. Bats L throws L. Obviously Giants have bunch of options there.
Brisbee in Athletic mentioned minor league signing of infielder Alex Blandino, RH. Giants don’t seem to have much behind LaStella and Longoria (last year of contract) let alone Crawford, beside Estrada and Dubon. Bridge guys to Luciano Wilson etc. might still be issue.
Dubon #s from 2021:
.655 OPS with Giants, 76 OPS+, little worse than Casali. 9 BBs 41 Ks in 180 PAs.
At Sac, slash line .332/.410/.498 for .908 OPS in 280 PAs. Not much more power but lot more singles and 29 BBs 38 Ks, 3 fewer Ks in 100 more PAs.
AAAA player or can he help ML club?
Well, they got rid of steroid testing so there’s that route.
Maybe I’m a stick in the mud, but I will never twitter nor have a facebook account.
IMO, based on many things I have read, these are perhaps the two most major platforms for purveyors of lies and gross deceptions across the world, particularly in this country, that are fomenting major social and political dislocations. I believe that without them, the current sorry state of political affairs in this country would not be the disaster it is, and may become. As far as being a source of good, there is a part of it for that, but IMO that does not outweigh the horrendous consequences they have brought to our society. Since neither seems to be able or more likely, willing (since it would cost more money to do it) to disable or stop the constant stream of lies and deceit spewed on its platform, I would love to see them gone. This is not a question of restriction of people’s “free speech”, so nobody need waste time going there…
FB and Twitter do allow for spreading misinformation and lies but you’d have to be a complete idiot to fall for the sources spreading that info. It’s not hard to spot and it’s easy to identify sources that are trusted and reliable—I’m speaking mostly about twitter here, I just go to FB to see who my friends from high school look like these days–don’t belong to any weirdo groups there.
Snarkk, Twitter and FB are about 0.1% of the populace at large.
Much more damaging is the Fox News agenda, as well as OANN and Newsmax. Your average backwoods inbred cracker isn’t tweeting shit or fomenting anger on FB.
They are getting their news from inside the Republican Fox-led bubble and from Sinclair-run TV stations that are prevalent in rural areas all over the US.
The truly radical are out there are using those forums, but they are also on the dark web and anonymous sites like 4Chan and BlockChan.
Twitter and especially Facebook are used extensively offshore, particularly in Asia, for political propaganda and misinformation by strongman governments. Lots of articles out there on this…
Sinclair runs around 200 TV stations and peddles right-wing babble in the form of editorials on local news shows.
The circus is getting bigger. They like to throw out the words like democracy, and fiscal responsibility, that mean nothing like they are supposed to mean.
It’s right out of the Himmler playbook of accusing others of what you are doing.
Reaction from Kings fans Zum etc. to them trading Haliburton and Hield for Sabonis? Does make for overload in front court with Barnes Bagley Holmes and Metu, so maybe one of them on way out to contender as well?
Sounds like Bauer is off the hook criminally – at least.
Check Twitter or Fox for further details…
whoa. Manfred can still suspend him. Wonder what blowback would be from Dodgers fan base, either way.
This is kinda funny. Getting tired of staring out the window, and I’m creeping out the neighbors . . .
Having lived in 2 countries with gov’t controlled media (China and Vietnam [Vietnam less controlling than China]), I’d take gov’t control of media over corporate control any day. At least with gov’t control, you know how it is. Corporate control is so insidious because fools don’t understand they’re being played. That clip of Sinclair announcers is flat out chilling….
What’s your take on Shuai Peng, the tennis player?
Who knows. I’d guess that her initial expose’ on Chinese social media about being sexually assaulted by the former high ranking official was true… but that she then realized it was best to play nice with the gov’t or lose everything. Gov’t certainly has gone all out to not discredit her but to bring her back into the fold, so to speak…
lol. I hope the eff bee eye ain’t monitoring sports blogs.
Mind you, I was not at all advocating control of media by either gov’t or the private sector.
Wish Stix would chime in…
I know he ain’t on Twitter.
This song always makes me think of him…
Reflexes got the better of me
And what is to be must be…
give him a call. I think this was the number he used last time he called me: 763-325-7541
Wow thanks for Clapton vid, Loo. Yes beautiful line there, “reflexes.” I still listen to original and other Bob Marley tunes.
It’s amazing how often I have no idea what everyone here is talking about…
Flavor: You have to keep the Flap alive…
I’m with djloo!
At Stanford game hosting Bruins, crowd shot shows guy with Beat LA sign. Well done
On ESPN this afternoon saw Burger King spot promoting 2 for $5 deal, set to music of…2 of Hearts, Stacy Q song from 1986.
