A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Bengals and Info About The Flap

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 9, 2022

With baseball lost at sea we might as well kick around the SB winner. I am taking Cinn but not heavily. I think they Rams are pretty overrated but they do have a dominant DL and Cinn has a weak OL. That could change the entire game in their favor right there. So I guess I don’t have a strong take on the game since I think Cinn is going to win but I think LA could control the game at the LOS. Maybe I just really want The Bengals to win. You?

Regarding the Flap, I’m not doing a stable boys thing. Nothing lasts forever gents, our old asses know that as well as anyone. I could see keeping it going for one more baseball season. After that I’ll keep it preserved somewhere (probably here) for future generations to read (but not comment on) and you guys can all migrate to twitter (where I’ll be) or Chuck’s Niner blog (where I will also be).

So as of right now, prepare yourselves for this being the final season of the Flap. Hopefully baseball let’s us go out with a bang.

I’ve hit a rough patch on Daily Fantasy. Won a little Day Two. So going into Friday I failed the Flav test because I had to go to dinner with the chick and forgot to check the player updates so I realize as we are leaving the restaurant and of course have someone not playing. We get home so I quickly do one entry for the late game with a couple Blazers. Getting late so never look back and both Blazers Covington and Powell don’t play because they both get traded!! Fuck!

Then come Sunday have my lineup set and then take one of my kids to the driving range in the afternoon and fail to check my lineup and I have LeVert in my starting lineup and the Pacers have an afternoon game and he gets frickin traded!!!!

  3. Giant Head said, on February 9, 2022 at 7:49 am

Here is what I keep doing. I do a lineup with some low level players to keep the overall salary down and then I end up with a lineup with money left over so then just my lineup to improve the picks and the guys I remove end up having decent games and my upgrade picks flounder.

the bottom line is that chalk usually smashes in NBA DFS (although Hayward getting hurt took out 54% of the field the other day). You need to find the 2-3 chalk guys every day and it’s not hard to find them, there’s usually enough info coming out after morning shootaround to see who’s going to start for someone who’s *got a migraine* or whatever. Then you just have to hit on your two expensive studs. Simpler to say than to do

GH–if you’re going to play larger tournies you have to build a LU that can realisitically get to 320+. Some days, obviously, the winning score is into the high 300’s but if you’re right with your picks your team will draft up that high. Assign best case scenario points to everyone in your LU and be realistic about it. If you can’t get to 320 you probably need to start over. Again again, I’m talking about DK, 8 players, diff salary structure than FD. Adjust the math to match FD tho and you’ll figure it out (or just bail on FD because that site is lame and start one at DK)

Knicks gave up 83 in first half at Denver last night and lost third in row on road trip. In town to face Warriors tomorrow. Read lot of back/forth in Athletic on Kings Pacers trade. Seems a shame Kings gave up on Haliburton; saw a lot of negativity on Sabonis and his lack of D. Kings might make another deal to offload front court player that might now be redundant or who could bring back someone to help them.
Always little suspicious of players who put up good numbers on losing teams.

Giants obviously have to come down this season from a 107 Win historic 2021.
AZ and Rockies can’t be as bad as last season, and Pads figure to actually play up more to their potential with Melvin pulling the levers. Lots of question marks for the Giants roster, starting pitching being one. I’m thinking 88 wins would be a really good performance, and a wild card finish, to help the Flap go out with a bang. LA wins division again. Just too much talent. That’s assuming there IS a full season. Which seems unlikely now. If not full, just the pro rata result over a distorted season…

  7. willedav said, on February 9, 2022 at 8:55 am

Key for Bengals would be keeping Rams off Burrow and getting something out of running game with Mixon. Be cool if Bengals could get after Stafford and get some turnovers.

  8. snarkk said, on February 9, 2022 at 8:58 am

I could say it is unbelievable that MLB and the players are ready to jack around with another work stoppage eating substantially into a season, risking fan rage and the already tottering popularity of this game, but it is entirely believable. Sorry to say, but from things I’m reading and hearing, I think in another decade, maybe 15 years at best, baseball will be not far from hockey as a very siloed game. Many many young people just don’t give an S about it, it’s not even on their radar. When gray hairs like me are gone, who’s going to care about it? Care and love start at a young age, so if it doesn’t happen then, it won’t happen…

    • djloo27 said, on February 9, 2022 at 9:38 am

You know what could save it?
      LEGALIZED GAMBLING
Look no further than the exchange above between GH & BF.
It’s more or less the only game in town during the summer.
Care and love will be bought and sold minute to minute…

      • Flavor said, on February 9, 2022 at 11:30 am

Absolutely. If I was in charge you’d be able to make in game bets and prop bets inside the park and kiosks everywhere

      • snarkk said, on February 9, 2022 at 2:55 pm

If gamblers are the only people in future who care about baseball, its in trouble.
They aren’t actually going to a lot of games, and bodies in seats in 162 are way more important to baseball than football in 17 or whatever it is now…

      • Flavor said, on February 9, 2022 at 3:58 pm

i don’t think they necessarily need to be “gamblers”. But adding prop bets to something you could do at a game would probably increase attendance–hey it’d be one more reason to go to the game. And these days you need multiple reasons–not enough people are going their with their glove and a scorecard anymore. Those fans are nearly extinct.

  10. willedav said, on February 9, 2022 at 1:14 pm

Hopefully generation behind us older ones sticks with baseball even if it looks quite different from game we grew up with. College ball at Power 5 schools ( full of 4 yr players), travel ball (expensive/exclusive but thriving) and continued influence of baseball mad caribbean players to MLB I think are all good omens.

One thing I do hope gets more attention is preventing injuries to pitchers, young and old. 15 yr olds having TJ surgery is not right, nor are all the myriad injuries that happen at all levels of pro ball, even to established vets.

    • Winder said, on February 9, 2022 at 3:52 pm

Hopefully baseball will thrive once again. With all the electronics and social media kids have avenues that we never did. We didn’t hang around the house so we played baseball, football, and basketball pretty much year round in CA.

  11. chipower9 said, on February 9, 2022 at 1:23 pm

I am going Bengals (taking 4.5 points). I think they can win outright. Fuck, they came back from like 17 down to take the Chiefs. If they can do that, they can take the Lambs. Key is getting Burrows some protection and getting the running game going so the Lambs D line cannot t-off every snap. Turnovers will be key, too. Go Bengals!

I am bummed as fuck on the Flap news, but I get it. It’s a sad day…and don’t see myself doing Twitter, and while there may be a bunch of Flappers out there, it just would be no way anything like the interactions here.

Just keep the Flap right where it is *under new management*. Editors-In-Chief come and go at major newspapers (ha, these days, major newspapers come and mainly go). Maybe you could type up a brief job description, see if anyone bites….

The Beach Boys were still cranking out good shit in 1967, but they went the way of Brian and faded out.

Mainly because they turned down the opportunity to headline the Monterey Pop festival, and they were vilified for that.

Nice W for Kings last night, at home with 3 new guys to go with Fox and Barnes, as they outscore T Wolves and Edwards and Towns. 32 assists on the night. Always liked skill set of Sabonis and Justin Holiday (who won ring with Warriors) one of three brothers in family in NBA. At least they got some value for Bagley, and DiVincenzo might bring much needed help on D.

Hey Loo–reading bio stuff on SABR site about Russ Hodges, there is note that his call in famous 1951 game is playing in Godfather scene where Sonny is murdered. True?

    • willedav said, on February 10, 2022 at 3:58 pm

I guess this is true. there’s a ballgame on radio going on while Sonny is on road up to the tollbooth and you do hear it later as he pulls up and stops.

Yep. I stopped watching the news a few months ago. Not worth it. I used to love to be engaged in politics but now we are just pissing into the void what with there being nothing but extreme viewpoints on both sides.

No middle ground. God forbid I inch too close to someone else’s lane on the freeway. It’s like I murdered his mom.

Some guy nearly hit me as I was merging onto Danville Road. I honked and the guy stopped his car in the middle of traffic, backed up like he was gonna hit my car and started yelling at me “Get out of the car, motherfucker!!!” Took all I could do to not slam my door into his fucking kneecaps and fuck with him. I just backed up, drove around his car and left him standing there with his thumb up his ass. Really wanted to turn around and chase him out of the street.

Now that I’m close to retiring, I am seriously thinking about getting the fuck out of this country. I’m so sick of the bullshit around everything.

Reminds me of George Carlin saying “Just think how stupid the average American is. And then think half the people are dumber than that.”

Mrs. snarkk and I for some time have been researching retirement offshore the US.
This country is seriously messed up. Repetitive lies and absurdities fed to the public are actually believed, or condoned, by a wide minority of people.
What used to be considered crackpot behavior and KKK level white supremacist drivel, now are the currency of many politicians and don’t even generate a shrug with millions. Millions have taken loads of vaccinations in their lifetime, but won’t take the Covid vaxx though it has overwhelming scientific proof that not taking it gives you anywhere from 10X-30X bigger chance, when you are infected, of going to the ICU and dying.
One political party just officially declared that political violence in an attempted coup was and is OK, it’s “legitimate political discourse”.
Where do you go as a nation but downhill after all that?…

Loads of stories/articles you can read about “retiring abroad”, etc. Pros and cons in all cases, of course. Stories include those who have given up US citizenship to live abroad (some countries require that, others don’t, I guess). I don’t think that’s something I would ever do, as long as I can still pull off living “over here” while still being an American citizen. Although who knows, the way things are going…… Strange, I first came over here in ’04, not even thinking of retiring here (or thinking of retiring anywhere, at that point). Stay somewhere long enough, retirement will come to you….

  39. paul sorensen said, on February 11, 2022 at 8:38 pm

Followup to my last post: Steve (Blade) did a lot of research about this a few years ago. He seemed to favor some places in South America (Ecuador, etc.) or Central America (Panama, etc.). He might have some thoughts. I’ve gone Asian, I think there’s no coming back from that. One big problem here for me (which anyone needs to consider when thinking about this): Vietnam has no retirement visa. Some Asian countries do (Thailand, Singapore, etc.) but not here. Meaning, if I want to stay, every couple years I need to cobble together some legal construct that gives me a valid visa to stay. Getting more difficult all the time, actually. So, yeah: check out how to stay legal….

I’m watching the series “Snowpiercer” now, and there were just 2 episodes in season 2 where 2 of the characters killed themselves; one of them pretty much forced to by his leader. Before the episode, a notice came up warning viewers there would be a suicide, going on to give information and hotlines for anyone needing to reach out and talk instead of offing themselves. I don’t think I’d ever seen that before, especially for a show that’s kind of sci-fi…

It looked pretty absurd. Is in any good?

There’s a film (Korean, I think) from 2013. Might want to watch that first (Netflix) before diving in to the series, although the series is a bit different. It’s an interesting concept, what *could* happen if climate change is not intelligently dealt with, and deals largely with the concept of class in society, as the surviving humans are segregated by class on the train as it roars nonstop around the frozen world. Fairly timely issues, actually, about global warming, class, politics… A bit violent in some scenes (revolutions on the train as the “tailies, those in the back of the train, try to get to the front). I’m liking it enough to continue, especially now in season 2 which has picked up the pace a bit. And, I like trains. In fact, I love trains. The train is pretty cool.
