Four Days…..
…till the delay the start of the season. Right now, I don’t really care. Still in the midst of Winter, baseball still feels a long way off to me. Another thing: even though they are holding meetings it doesn’t feel like this is going to get done any time soon.
Part of me hopes this goes on for a long time and all parties involved lose money and look like assholes.
But I know I’m gonna miss the game.
Flav, I’m with ya on the lockout. Since the owners wanted this, I’m hoping the players hold out until they get the financials they want and the rules they want to play under.
For me thou, right now is King Cake season, Friday Gras baby. We have our 4th king cake of the season being delivered today (and dats not counting the Blue Bell king cake ice cream we got into). The parades are rolling in NOLA without us, but we are celebrating just the same.
Just a reminder, the king cake knife stays in the king cake box and watch out for the baby, ya don’t wanna break a tooth.
I don’t really understand a lot of this, but it sounds like a good time is had by all!
Yeah you right, Zum. Huge fun.
Story I saw in NYT this morning said “Godfather” to be re released in theaters today, 50 years after debut. Coppola apparently had new print done.
Coppola was on a pretty good streak in the ’70s.
Co-wrote screenplay for Patton.
Directed Godfather I, II
Directed The Conversation
Directed Apocalypse Now.
His wines are so-so…
i had to google what a King Cake is….why do you eat that again? Why would I accidently take a bit of the king cake knife? LOL
It’s part of the decadence known as Mardi Gras. It’s a tradition that goes way back, probably to Roman times. Anywho, I guess the Christens in Europe decided to continue some of the Roman Pagan traditions, the name of the cake in French and also Spanish translates to the cake of kings. The French and Spaniards brought their traditions with them when they settled into New Orleans. I’m not religious so I don’t really understand the Epiphany and Ash Wednesday stuff, but during the times between Twelfth Night and Fat Tuesday you drink, eat fatty foods and party hardy Marty. They used to bake the cakes with a bean in them and I think it was considered good luck if ya got the bean and you were crowned king or queen for the day. These days they cook the cakes with a plastic baby in them and if you get the baby you have to buy the king cake the next Mardi Gras.
The cake is like a brioche coffee cake ring covered with white icing and purple, green and yellow sugar. They also have them filled with cream cheese, Bavarian cream, fruit creams, but also some wild ones. They are everywhere you go in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, with 100 something different bakeries coming up with their versions.
I think this is all true or pretty close to it anyway. Cheers.
Oh yeah, the cakes come in a box, and we just leave the knife in the box for anyone who wants a slice.
Thanks that was a fun read. Party on, bozo
Sounds like fun. I had to google it too. But I got the recipe.
I won’t keep going on but just wanted to say, Caluda’s strawberry cream cheese king cake wins it for us this year,
I’m rooting as hard for the Ukraine as I ever did for any of my favorite teams…
Yeah I’m with you Loo! The President of Ukraine sure has a set of balls on him, out and about side by side with his citizens stating:We are all here, are soldiers are all here, are citizens are here, we are here to defend are independence! All why being a number 1 target for execution by this madman dictator Putnin…
Somewhat puzzling and disheartening to see certain US politicians and media stars seemingly rooting for the other guy. I don’t know, I’ve never been to Russia or Ukraine. But living over here and traveling a lot, I have met and gotten to know a lot of people from both countries. Not that it matters in the scheme of things, but I’ve liked everyone I’ve ever met from Ukraine and pretty much disliked anyone I’ve met from Russia. Very unscientific sampling, but nonetheless. Fuck Russia, and fuck China for actually blaming the US for this. “Man, why don’t you just shut up…”
i mean, I want Ukraine to *win* too but what are we even doing here. Russia could ruin them at any point, I think we all know how this is going to end up. Puppet regime, and soon.
Yeah, tough to see any path for Ukraine to *win*. *Survive* is about all they can hope for.
The only way Ukraine comes out on top if Zelenskyy plays Putin one on one of a game of Risk..
I don’t think USA journalists pronounce Kyev correctly. It has a two-syllable dipthong. I think it’s KEE-ev. (Da, konyechno, as we used to say in Russian class fifty years ago, although Ukrainian is slightly different.) And none of the mainstream journalists so far are considering the extraordinary Ukrainian debacle that led to trump’s first impeachment — the gutting of the USA diplomatic corps in Ukraine, the connections of trump and Michael Flynn et al in that admin to Russia and to pro-Russia honchos in Ukraine. Also recall trump’s anti-NATO position. This Putin putsch didn’t just rise ab ovo sometime late last year. The imperial and economic battles going on behind the curtains must be staggeringly cold, corrupt, and authoritarian on all sides.
how can you not love this Zelenskyy cat?
he’s the guy who refused to submit to trump’s extortion efforts during that famous phone call
The typos are regrettable, but this is an old fashioned analysis that rings true

I’m with Zelenskyy. No one wants to be at war but.. Ukraine picked the US to be friends with. They chose wrong. That the asshole Putin broadcast for a week or more they were invading, and all the western Euro countries and the good old US of A wagged a finger and said Bad Putin.. So we rescue Kuwait cause we could beat Iraq but let Ukraine go just like that? Fuck that. . If I was Taiwan I’d be very worried. China is coming and the US will do nothing.
Don’t be silly, Sportsdude.
Look what the greatest country in the world is doing!

It’s somewhat of an impossible situation. For years, much of the US population has been crying out for America to stop being the world’s policeman, etc. etc. Obviously the *America First* crowd amplified that. But surely even for them, there must be a line that shouldn’t be crossed. If Ukraine was already part of NATO, this wouldn’t even be happening. And if the US had a treaty with Taiwan as we do with Japan — that the US would come to theirdefense if they’re attacked — China wouldn’t be rattling its swords. But yeah, without membership in NATO, Ukraine is on its own, and without such a treaty with the US, so is Taiwan. THAT would get very nasty if China acted on Taiwan, in so many ways. Personally, I’d be in favor of some black-on-black ops delivering a small suitcase nuke to Putin for a *surgical removal*….
I just watched video of a long, compelling interview with Ukrainian journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk on the news show Democracy Now. Tr. available on the website. Her English is very good. (Her Ukrainian pronunciation of Kyiv clearly enunciated the two-syllable dipthong; it also softened the v toward f.)
“I receive the support from friends, people whom I know, you know, like from even like weird places, like from Mali to Tuvalu. People send support, and I appreciate it. But I think that the trust in the Ukrainian society should be also there — not just support, but the trust that we are really doing something special. And it’s not just for Ukraine. It’s really about the rules of this world.”
Mardi Gras is a strange thing. It’s in that odd category with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny; things that don’t have anything to do with Christianity, but have gotten connected to Christian events in the culture.
Speaking of Santa Claus, I’m glad my parents never tried to get me to believe in that nonsense. There are parents that lie to their kids about Santa, and then at some point have to tell their kids, yeah, we were lying. What’s up with that?! 🙂
I stopped believing in that fat fuck after he stiffed me in ’61.
I was really good that year…
Yeah, Santa sucks. And he somehow lives at the North Pole. On a floating block of ice?
Well that part is at least somewhat plausible to me…
My tradition of watching Seinfeld with my three year old son ruined his belief in santa — episode with Kramer as a mall Santa, I think. Poor kid’s outrage was stunning.
I was far more disappointed when people tried to tell me professional wrestling was fake.
It took 2 hours at a blackjack table with Gorilla Monsoon in 1990 to convince me…
I like how the pro wrestling refs could never see when one of the wrestlers hit the other wrestler with a folding chair. How did the ref always miss that? 🙂
Yeah, luckily I had an older brother to ruin all that shit by age 5.
The hold that Gazprom has over many Euro countries is real. Replacing energy it provides will not be easy nor inexpensive during winter where it’s still snowing in many countries, but imo has to be done, by USA and others, to disrupt major source of income for Putin.
I didn’t realize how much NG and oil Russia supplies to western Europe.
yes. Easier for US and others to help France Italy and Central Europe, much harder and more expensive for Hungary Poland and Eastern Europe. Affects costs to people and businesses too. Good Germany halted that big Russian project.
Zum, I think the Christens may have adapted some of the older pagan events into their holidays/histories. Mardi Gras is probably adapted from the Saturnalia festival and Christmas was probably from the Winter Solstice festival, Yule. Maybe Easter was the Spring Equinox, Ostara. Not sure how all that works.
Nice overlay on Midnight Bourbon in the world’s richest race.
10 minutes to post…
the winner was quite something. Some enormous prices there today.
The Putin’s of this world are delaying any chance of the world progressing. How one man has that much power is beyond me. With communications as they are now it’s hard to push across bullshit messages. There are so many possibilities for good things to happen that it’s just mind boggling how a small percentage of people( those with massive amounts of money) can keep the world going backwards.
Hi Paul,
Appreciate the perspective. Was Kuwait part of NATO? An ally in some formal way? or just a small country invaded by a stronger country run by a power hungry asshole?
imo the US can never stop being the worlds policeman. If we don’t do it who will? Clearly Russia has Belarus and soon Ukraine under control. If they decided to take Moldova and Bulgaria it’s ok, but if the roll through a sliver of Romania on the way then US and NATO jump in? This is potentially pre WW2 Germany all over again.
Sorry for the foray into world stuff. Any predictions on when baseball will start? I say June 1st
One unfortunate thing I’ve noticed in all the college b-ball I watch is how long games often take. Inclusion of all the TV timeouts by big networks, longer intermissions (TV again) and general slow pace if game is close and the team that trail is fouling and both are calling timeouts. Networks often schedule games to be broadcast 2 hours apart, and often isn’t enough time to get first game over and done with.
Add in all the replay delays and adjusting of the clock by 10ths of seconds in the final minute. The last second of Michigan St.-Purdue today must’ve taken 10 minutes, all precipitated by a Sparty player’s asinine inbound pass. Yeah, the endless timeouts and fouls late bug me too. College coaches for whatever reason can never quite concede when a game becomes unwinnable and will foul right to the bitter end.
Loo you will feel my pain here. I tweeted this out before the Rebel. I did back him up good on Pl and Sh but I was out of the p5 which I would have hit in the next leg. 15-1, basically wasted. Ignore all the rest of this tweet below but I did go on record at 15-1 only to lose to a fucking 75-1 shot.
Just watched the replay.
Doesn’t get more brutal.
Didn’t seem possible.
At least you backed it up…
NY sports station runs a half hour show on Saturday mornings where reformed degenerate gamblers tell their stories. This poor guy told of the game that ended it all for him. The over/under was 8.5 with 2 good starting pitchers. He pounded the under…

Gregor Blanco leading off for Braves.
7 run inning, and 2 run bomb in bottom 9th did him in. yeow
2 outs with bases empty bottom 9. ouch
Can you believe it?
1-0 after 8!
yeah Loo unreal.
Ohman.
Meanwhile in SF, Sanchez was getting lit up by the D-Backs. It’s painful looking at the Giants’ lineup.
Stanford at Cal men tonight.
Great game on Hawk Hill as St. Joe’s lost to Bonnies by 2. Hawks had multiple shots to win or tie at end and St. Bona’s D held them off. Guy doing the color on broadcast, former coach who’s name I didn’t catch, was fantastic…sounded like Philly guy, really knowledgeable..
Zags in town at St. Mary’s later. Man they are offensive machine and the skinny freshman Holmgren is for real. He can shoot, put ball on floor rebound and block shots.
Cal, 10th in league and at 4-13, up 21-4 at home on senior night. Stanford (tied for 7th in league) has 1 hoop in 10 and a half minutes. J Kidd in house. Axe is too, lol. Don McLean doing game, really good.
St. Mary’s takes down the Zags, the last of the top 6 teams that all lost today.
Control tempo is their strength get good shots extend possessions. Bennett is really good coach.
It would be interesting to see just how many American 1%ers are helping finance Russia in this travesty of justice. Sorry about the non-sports comment but there is some real serious shit going on right now. Baseball would sure be a nice respite.
Nice job Winder a great smoothing track on a Sunday Morning!
I don’t think 🤔 I’ve heard that version before, rock solid, nice variety of instruments and musicians…
Cal thrashed Stanford 53-39. One guard got hot Jordan Sheppard, and no one from Cards ever did as they shot 23.5% from floor, 4-18 from 3.
At halftime they ran special on John Wooten, whom I googled to get full story, quite interesting man.
Was second black player at Colorado, and played in Orange Bowl vs. Clemson team that said South Carolina laws prohibited them from playing integrated teams. Game went on anyway and Buffs won 27-21. Elected to college HOF.
Later he was guard blocking for Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly on Cleveland, who led league in rushing while he was there blocking and won NFL championship. Later became exec and worked in League office. Wonderful story, great history.
Wooten was also part of the June 4 1967 Cleveland Summit organized by (retired from NFL) Jim Brown to show support for Ali, who refused to enter draft on conscientious objector at that time and had been stripped of his boxing title.
Others in famous pic include Bill Russell Bob Gibson Kareem attorney Carl Stokes and other footballers such as Curtis McClinton of Chiefs, Willie Davis of Pack, couple other Browns and former teammate of Jim Brown Bobby Mitchell of Washington.
Can you imagine how great the backfield would of been in Cleveland with Jim Brown and Ernie Davis if he didn’t tragically die of leukemia before his 1st season!
Another shameful times was Brown not eligible for the Heisman trophy when he played, yet that changed when Davis became the 1st black player to win it.Sure Brown was pissed off, as so much racism was going on for all black athletes and he clearly would of won the award first.
Crazy run of STUD RB’s coming out of Syracuse in the 60’s Brown,Davis,Kelly my lord that’s scary!
Floyd Little…
Damm Loo u are on point again!
Little was at Syracuse right after Davis who I believe mentored him on the importance of being yourself and the expectations of wearing number 44.. Kelly went to Morgan St I think but played for the Browns, while Little played for the Broncos?
Right Kat.
Leroy Kelly was my favorite RB ever…
I thought the portrayal of Jim Brown in One Night in Miami was very good (the script and direction, and the acting by Aldis Hodge). Not as central or as deep as the portrait of Malcolm X, but good. And better than the attempts at Ali and Sam Cooke. Overall, I’d say two thumbs up.
Well, when they cancel April baseball, that cancels their 4 game series at Citifield, their only visit to NY in 2022.
Sorry MacDog…
There’s always Philly.
Lakers losing by 30 at home. Very pleasing to see. Shooting 3-24 on 3-pointers. The modern NBA and its nightly 3-pointer brick-fests.
Lakers getting booed by their fans. It’s a beautiful thing.
