A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

New Rules

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 7, 2022

I only saw this in passing and I don’t have the details but I think I read that the players and owners have agreed to end the shift, implement a pitch clock and make the bases bigger? Did I dream this or is this really happening?

What is odd is that the players have accepted those changes allegedly but balked on robotic umps. Does that make any sense??? As I understand the bonus pool negotiations players started at $120 million and now lowered to $80 – a $40 mill cut – and owners have gone from a whole $10 to just $30. What kind of negotiation is that????

  2. Giant Head said, on March 7, 2022 at 8:06 am

Also owners apparently agreed to what the players want in a universal DH which sucks. My opinion is that players need to lessen demands on the salary cap asking for it to jump as much $260 mill in a couple of years. Owners will never accept that. So give in the middle on bonus pool for $60 mill and players drop the demand for $5 million annual bonus pool increases and owners maybe add a 10% increase in salary cap every every 5 years. So in 10 years they get roughly to that $260 mill level that players want in a couple of years.

Catching up with Stanford suicide sad sad story. Figured the Flap would be in it. I think the school needs to divulge what this investigation was based on. Story Passed on was she was defending a teammate. Was this some type of harassment accusation???

    • Flavor said, on March 7, 2022 at 9:47 am

this “defending a teammate” thing is pretty general and coming from the parents. I’d want a lot more info before I started accusing the school of anything. Again, Stanford wants their athletes to succeed. They aren’t in the business of harrassing them into suicide. That makes no sense whatsoever.

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2022 at 11:01 am

The silence as far as the details is remarkable.
Grim as it is, I don’t believe they have even disclosed the method of suicide.
Does “self-inflicted” automatically mean a gunshot? I don’t think it does, but if a gun was involved doesn’t that require even more investigation?
How much does the public have a right to know?
      IDK…

Players in on DH (inevitably happening for better or worse) in order for some vets to continue to get paid as they age, handsomely in some cases. Always dug “professional” hitters, like Harry Spilman, that could come off bench and PH when needed and give solid AB. Guys like that nowadays can get 3-4 ABs per game instead of in a week. This should also help Kap and his platooney matchup strategy that paid off so well last season.

Props to Kentucky women’s b-ball for winning SEC tournament, toughest league in NCAA, by beating 3 ranked teams in 3 days. They beat LSU and 3 time NCAA champ coach Kim Mulkey in semis and then knocked off #1 in country South Carolina led by revered coach Dawn Staley with 4th quarter run on Sunday. Stanford won weakened Pac 12 (injuries to top contenders Oregon and Zona) easily. Deep team very dangerous if untested much in league.
USF vs. Zags tonight in WCC semis and most Power 5 leagues start their Tourneys in day or two. good stuff.
Upset kings Loyola Chi back in it.

UK men obviously could win SEC Tourney and maybe win it all. Wonder how many times recently a school was won both mens and womens Conference Tourneys in same season.
Stanford women have won Pac 12 Tourney 15 times in 21 years it has been in existence. Men, um not so much.
Coach Haase got UAB into Dance in 2015, but has yet to get there at all since with Cards.

The roboumps would on balance hurt the pitchers, especially those who don’t throw 95+. That’s still a significant number of players. On the flip side, hitters who can’t get around on high fastballs might not care that much about the disappearance of the wide strike zone.

March 6 1923 birth of Wes Montgomery, who died in 1968. Those Riverside LPs were great, and so was his appearance with Cannonball Adderley on “The Poll Winners” from 1960, also on Riverside.

Atlanta WR Calvin Ridley suspended for 1 year for betting on football games.
Betting 1,500 over a 5 day period after he left the Falcons team in late October for his mental health.

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2022 at 4:43 pm

      I’m sure he’s the only one…

      • unca_chuck said, on March 7, 2022 at 5:39 pm

If he left the Falcons, why is that illegal?

    I think we’re in for a depression that’ll make the 30’s look like paradise…

  11. unca_chuck said, on March 7, 2022 at 5:44 pm

4 days and the school has said nothing?

They are stonewalling something. Least that’s how it looks.

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2022 at 6:02 pm

      Completely agree.
See my 11:01 if you have nothing else to do before the next Wordle…

  12. unca_chuck said, on March 7, 2022 at 5:54 pm

And bigger bases? Who is even asking for that?

    • djloo27 said, on March 7, 2022 at 5:59 pm

      The company that manufactures bases?

  13. alleykat69 said, on March 7, 2022 at 6:05 pm

He didn’t leave the Falcons Chuck, he was on administrative leave for his so called health issues. They still have control on his contract for next year as well, though he won’t be playing now, and that 1,500 bets could end up costing him 10 million if the Falcons void it , which I’m sure they will try and do.
His betting started a week are 2 after his last game around Halloween.

Whoa end of Chattanooga vs. Furman game was wild. Mocs win Conference and are in.

Charlie, from previous thread, that was actually Merry Clayton singing on Gimme Shelter, and yeah, amazingly powerful singing on that song. Sandy Denny is one of my all time favorites, from her very early days with Fairport Convention all the way thru her own solo career until she died way too young from a fall at home. Maybe you’re thinking of her singing with Robert Plant on Battle of Evermore, which is also just brilliant vocalizing.

Yep. There were stories about how she recorded that while very pregnant and that the vigor and volume of her singing caused her to miscarry. But helluva vocal! Sandy Denny’s demise still breaks my heart.

RAPE! MURDER! IT’S JUST A SHOT AWAY! IT’S JUST A SHOT AWAY! RAPE! MURDER! YEAH! IT’S JUST A SHOT AWAY, IT’S JUST A SHOT AWAY! RAPE! MURDER! IT’S JUST A SHOT AWAY, IT’S JUST A SHOT AWAY, YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YAY.

helluva pop song for the Viet Nam war era.

I rode a tank, held a general’s rank. When the Blitzkrieg raged and the bodies stank.

        Pretty relevant today…

  16. alleykat69 said, on March 7, 2022 at 6:13 pm

Yeah the bases thing is totally stupid.Supposedly they want to increase the dimensions from 15” to 18”??
The pitch clock I can certainly go for. They want to make it 14 seconds, nobody on base, and 19 seconds if a runner is on base. Its been reported in minor league games to cut 20 minutes off of a game, I’m all for that!

  18. James said, on March 7, 2022 at 7:35 pm

I thought the bigger bases = more stolen bases.

  19. unca_chuck said, on March 8, 2022 at 6:25 am

Does 4.5″ make that big a difference?

    (said every woman out there)

    • James said, on March 8, 2022 at 7:24 am

Seems like runners are often tagged out inches from the bag, but I’m not sure it would impact strategy that much.

    • snarkk said, on March 8, 2022 at 11:16 am

Stealing bases is a dead letter in MLB.
I doubt making bases bigger will change that…

So Ridley (“I don’t have a gambling problem”) bet 3 parlays for $500 each, with his team to win part of the bets, on his phone in Florida where it’s legal to do so. Right? For which he gets 1 yr suspension.
If like in baseball this is posted everywhere for players to see, then he’s got no case. Same as Pete Rose, who despite stellar career (I loved him on 60s Reds), broke the one rule you can’t break.

  21. unca_chuck said, on March 8, 2022 at 10:56 am

Wow. Good news for the 49ers.. Bad news for the Raiders.. Russell Wilson was just traded to the Broncos. I guess jimmy is going to Pittsburgh.

    • snarkk said, on March 8, 2022 at 11:16 am

Now, maybe the Niners can beat Seattle once in a while…

      • Winder said, on March 8, 2022 at 12:11 pm

You got that right. love the move

    • snarkk said, on March 8, 2022 at 12:02 pm

Seattle paper reporting that the Broncos gave up a package that includes two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and one fifth-round pick, plus Broncos players including quarterback Drew Locke, tight end Noah Fant and defensive end Shelby Harris. Seattle gives up a 4th round pick. Looks like Seattle is going to get a lot of bodies to help re-build, so maybe reports of their demise are premature. With Wilson and Rodgers situations now clarified, JimmyG is probably on the move soon…

  22. unca_chuck said, on March 8, 2022 at 10:58 am

A-Rod isn’t going anywhere, so that leaves Jimmy and maybe deSean (pending legal status) as the guys available for Pitts. Or Houston. Or even the Jets if they want to keep Zakk Wylde alive.

    • Winder said, on March 8, 2022 at 12:38 pm

Dont forget someone will probably go for Wentz also. I think Jimmy in Pittsburg would be something to see. They are a run heavy team.

  23. Giant Head said, on March 8, 2022 at 11:51 am

Think the increases in the bag will lessen potential collision at first and probably will get teams thinking about running more especially with eliminating or reducing the shift. Now teams probably won’t run more but I have always wanted the Giants to run more.

    • Winder said, on March 8, 2022 at 12:42 pm

Maybe the extra 3″ will let players leg out a few more base hits.

  24. Macdog said, on March 8, 2022 at 1:17 pm

Another reason I’ve seen for the bigger bases is to prevent the baserunner from over-sliding and getting tagged out by the most miniscule of margins, especially when it goes to replay and further slows down the game. Here’s an excerpt from a NY Post story.

“Wouldn’t it be great if that play ceased to exist? While full eradication might prove too ambitious, a bigger base surely would help.

‘The current base, if you don’t hit the front of it and stop, you’re going through it,’ Chris Marinak, MLB’s chief operations and strategy officer, told The Post… ‘And this base is a little more forgiving in the sense that, if you hit the front of it, hopefully there’s more catch on the base. You can actually stop on the bag without popping off. Certainly that’s one of the ideas behind it.'”

  25. unca_chuck said, on March 8, 2022 at 2:17 pm

Think Jimmy goes to Seattle Now? lol…

  26. willedav said, on March 8, 2022 at 2:32 pm

Mac has to have that right, only reason for larger bases that makes sense.

Pete Rose first season in Cincy was 1963, as rook 2b. Another guy on that team who was also 22 and hit at top of lineup with him was OF Tommy Harper (who made debut a year earlier with Reds April1962), from Encinal HS Alameda. Other 2 starting OFs on that team and for next few years were my heroes, Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson from Oakland.
Tommy Harper is still alive at age 81.
